Dash, I was referring to things like, say, dice rolls.  How do we conduct dice rolls on a play-by-post game?

Also, if we're going to DO something, say I want to jump over a desk or climb a fence or something, do I use the attribute and skill I think works best and then you jump in if you don't agree? Or do we work that out in the OOC thread first (Dash, I'm gonna try to jump over that wall, what kind of test should I roll?) or I dunno...

How far ahead can we get from you is what I'm saying.  I know you're calling the shots and you're running the story but that's not what I'm talking about.

Mainly my question is if we're going to attempt something that requires a test:

A) Do we always wait for you to tell us what the test calls for?

and

B) Do we always wait for you to tell us if the test succeeded?

I was just curious as to how we'll be adapting the game's mechanics into the play by post setting.  Maybe I'm over thinking things...

B) Do we always wait for you to tell us if the test succeeded?

I think you are overthinking, yes.  That said, the answer to both of those should be yes, but that's also what happens at the table (or at least at my table).  You can tell me something like, "I want to jump over that fence and land on the otherside." but until you roll the dice, you can say that you have done so.

Usually, I just put rolls in the IC thread, to be honest.  Makes it much easier to find.  We'll be using [ur=http://invisiblecastlel]Invisible Castle[/url] to do rolls and you can make them like this: Xd6.hits(5) .  Where "X" is the dice pool.  the ".hits(5)" part of the command will tell it to give you the number of hits in addition to the results of the roll.  Invisible Castle even gives you BBCode that you can copy here.  I usually change the font face to courier for rolls so they stand out.  It'll look like this:

10d6.hits(5)=1

We can also use colors to determine the difference between spoken word and matrix messages.

I also have a hacker/face I can use if you need to fill a spot.
I could wile away the hours conversing with the flowers
Consulting with the rain
And my head I'd be scratching while my thoughts were busy hatching
If I only had a brain...

Okay.  Not having heard from thorgild at all, I'm going to tap Scare_Crow and Father_Twilight, the latter of whom has already sent me a character to fill out the table.

That makes the team:

  • Gustovness
  • Raiden - Mage?
  • Scare Crow - Hacker/Face
  • Father Twighlight - Spy (if I read the sheet correctly)

@Raiden -- you'll see that your mage is likely more useful than another hacker type.  Send me that as quickly as you can.

My expectation is that we'll get started with the game no later than Monday.  I'm on vacation in Vermont right now, but I can still read the boards when I'm at my computer.  I'll need a new sheet from Raiden and a sheet from Scare Crow, but I have the information from the others.

PM sent with character.  If you hear from Thorgild, or if for some reason my character does not mesh well with the other characters, please let me know.

Combat is fairly light in my games, to be honest, so it's up to you.  Have you sent me a character yet, Raiden?

Feel free, if you want to, to post the character here.  Then everyone can chime in.  If not, I'll provide the Shadowrun equivalent of the Colored Animal Inn where you all can, in character, meet and greet.  Alternatively, you can decide that you've all known each other before and worked together.

Feel free to handle that conversation here.  We'll keep the OOC thread for the game itself.

Okay.  If you can get the modified sheet to me today, that would be excellent.

... you can decide that you've all known each other before and worked together.

Feel free to handle that conversation here.  We'll keep the OOC thread for the game itself.

Let's take care of this while we wait on the game to start.

Gust works as a bouncer on the weekends at a nightclub (one of the Miami chain clubs).  His background is an ambitious, college educated, electrical engineer who refuses to settle with the measly salary that an entry level wage slave earns.  This will be his first real shadowrun so he hasn't worked with any of you before.  However, considering the setting that he's in and that he's probably more face than muscle, he HAS done the following in his line of work:

  • Run escorts for drunk or threatened patrons from the club to their car or apartment nearby.
  • Intimidated people who are caught with or using drugs in order to extort money
  • Showed preferential treatment to local thugs and gangers who drop constant cash flow at the club
  • Gained real world hand to hand combat experience in bar brawls

So although Gust is about go on his first shadowrun with you guys, he's not a stranger to the streets.  He's actually a friendly guy and might have met you on a night out at his club.  His boss and head of security, Bear, is a black troll.  He's got his hands in more than he would initially let on and will act as the fixer that gets Gust into contact with his first, and your next, Johnson.

Go ahead and take some liberty as to the story behind how we met at the club so long as I don't kill anyone or do anything TOO illegal.  I'm more than willing to give you a hook up or preferential treatment if you're either a regular or a regular brought you in with you.

Background for Gregory Bellanger, from his point of view:

I never wanted to be this way, you know.  Cybernetic arm, implants, in debt up to my eyeballs.  I just wanted to have a good time, and maybe get my friends to look a little silly.  Just a harmless prank between friends is all it was supposed to be.

We met at a bar one night after work was done, ready to drink and live it up.  My buddies showed up - Eric, Weak, Frammen - and they were all in a good mood.  We sat down and ordered some shots, and we pulled our commlinks out, ready to cause each other some hell in a VR version of some game that right now escapes me.  Being a novice hacker, I decided I was gonna mess with Frammen and make it appear that his real-life account was empty.  I waltzed in through the node and emptied his account into that of some nameless douche at school.  We then proceeded to play and drink and have a good time.

I hacked the wrong account.

A few days later, shortly after waking up, there was a ringing of the doorbell.  I answered it, and the door was shoved inwards, knocking me backwards through the living room and into the glass coffee table.  I thought I was ok, until I saw blood dripping from my left arm.  I looked up, and there were 3 of the largest trolls I've ever seen staring at me.  One of them lifted me up by my left arm, and I realized it had to be broken due to the amount of pain I was now in.  Excruciating.  They dragged me with them out the door, into a car, and downtown to some old building.

Once at the building, I was dragged by my arm up 4 flights of stairs and tossed into a room like I was garbage.  I got to my knees, and ended up being face to face with Anthony "The Nose" Rosano.  Turns out the account I hacked was one he used to pay rent for one of his mistresses, and when she tried to pay rent that morning and found out it was empty, she accused Anthony of shining her on.  This caused him to hire the best hackers to find out who did this, and when they found out who the trolls came looking for me.

"Not bad," he said.  "Some college kid is able to hack into one of my accounts and make off with $10,000.  Tell me kid - what gives?  Who you working for?"

I told him everything I knew - the bar, playing a joke on Frammen, thought I had the right account.

"No shit?  A practical joke?  Well, I ain't fucking laughing.  And the way I see it, you owe me 10 grand now.  Plus interest.  And you are gonna pay."

I almost shit myself.  I'm some shitty-looking college kid with no prospects, and now I'm in deep to the sharks.  What the fuck?

"But I'm gonna make you a deal, kid.  I don't wanna kill you, cuz then I ain't ever gonna get my money back, see?  You're a decent hacker, but you lack....flair.  And style.  And the ability to read the right fucking nodes.  So I'm gonna help you get better.  And then you're gonna pay me back out of the money you make running in the shadows.  And I'm only gonna charge you 5% interest a month.  But first, let's fix that arm..."

What choice did I have?  They took my arm and left me with this.  They cleaned me up, giving me a new look.  And they taught me how to be a real hacker.  That was 7 years ago, and I've been cutting Anthony a piece of every run I've done since.  I only owe him 20 grand now, which is double what I originally took from him.  7 years, and I still owe him double.  Fuck me, I'm never gonna get out from under his thumb...

Whisper's history is all in his bio, nothing really needs to be added there. As for his daily routine, well he tries not to have one. He is an infiltration specialist and knows the dangers of a routine, and of alot of the "fun" places people go. So if he meets someone at a club, he's there on work or was pressured into coming. His entire agenda is just acquiring influence and power enough to one day repay the Mafia for destroying his family, and if he has to work for them to get that power he will do so, the whole time keeping his eyes open for something to use against them.
