This is kind of a punk question cause I am sure it is in the book somewhere...

Can projecting mages heal characters on the physical plane?

No, spells can not pass between the physical and the astral plane. Projecting mages can only heal other astrally active beings. This includes dual-natured beings.

Which is one of the better reasons to take astral perception as an adept: your magician can just drop heals on you from astral space, avoiding a lot of the danger of showing up physically..

No, the mage can cast MANA spells on the astrally perceiving character.

Yeah, actually, you can't cast Heal at all on the astral, not even on another astral form or yourself. Only mana spells can be cast in the first place, and then they have the restriction of astral and dual-natured targets only.

Ummmm...

Heal is a mana spell.  Page 208.   Type: M  Range: T Duration: P   SR4a

Example: adept takes 3 physical damage... you heal his astrally percieving butt  while astral.   Drain (3damage -2)== 1... sustain 2 combat turns til permanence... you roll 5 successes.. you use 3 to heal the damage, and 2 to reduce the sustaining time to 0 til the spell is made permanent.

Does not work well for massively armored trolls... all their damage is stun more often than not!

Derp, so it is. Never mind, that means you can cast it on dual-natured people too.

Not to mention, you could ground it through a focus.
Not that it'd be useful.

SR4 does not allow (or specify a rule for) grounding spells through foci.  It was a popular tactic when I played SR2, though. (Don't know about SR3, since I never played it.)

SR3 dropped that, thankfully.

SR2050 brought grounding back in a way. It also gave an in-game explanation for it not working any more (which I will be promptly dismissing). I fully intend on bringing it back fully the next time I run.

I might need to re-read that, I figured it disappeared in a handwavium.
