I meant that it all fits into 1 Essence; not that it's exactly 1 Essence. Anyway, the goal is Used Tailored Pheromones 3 + Alphaware Datajack + Alphaware Smartlink. That's 0.99 Essence, and is only 75,750 nuyen

Also, Datajacks are just incredibly useful. It provides DNI to everything; which means no trodes/AR Gloves (and AR is really prevalent), no Image Link needed, and makes certain things more useful (such as the Text Message free action). While it's certainly minor, there's not a whole hell of a lot more that you can fit into that extra Essence. Also, I've tried playing the character that doesn't use AR, or doesn't have DNI. It's a pain to deal with. While you can certainly do without, it's so cheap and just about the only thing you can fit in there anyway.

okay consider this considered lol but I just have to say this, does anyone else find the concept of used bioware kinda creepy?  anyway I had been thinking of this character's former military career ending in being too close to an explosion that damaged eyes and ears, and either the military or a generous street doc (lol) gave him cyber replacements for the eyes and ears...

Now I know that if I am getting other augmentations for this character that Tailored Pheromones are a 'might as well' kind of thing the way the backstory is shaping up this character didn't start realizing his face potential untill late in the military and/or just after slipping into the shadows, when he was 'poor' and couldn't afford them.

and as far as the datajack, I am assuming this would mean my comlink is plugged into the datajack for the dni?

You don't need wires to have DNI with a Datajack. It works wirelessly. It's unclear if you can have DNI for multiple devices, but every group I've ever played with allows it.

Used Bioware doesn't seem any creepier to me than Used Cyberware. Hell, some of that Cyberware is so invasive, it practically is your body. Getting Used Wired Reflexes is basically wearing someone else's spine. Ditto with Muscle Replacement, but ... muscles, instead of a spine.

Honestly, if you don't mind losing a few dice; I would go Muscle Toner and some Cybereyes and/or Cyberears. And a datajack. You can fit in Alphaware Muscle Toner 2 + Alphaware Rating 3/2 Cybereyes  + Alphaware Rating 3/2 Cyberears + Alphaware Datajack (only select one set as the 3 and one as the 2). Alternatively, you can skip the Datajack, although it's helpful, and get double Rating 3 Eyes/Ears.

When used wireless, the Datajack gives you +1 noise reduction, as well as connecting you to the Matrix and the device you base your persona on. If you plug it straight in, you use your device's wireless connection to the Matrix, so no +1 noise reduction, not to mention a cable sticking out of your head. So either way, you're connected.

Cybereyes and other 'ware are always nice, but are they worth that extra Power Point? Up to you. For this guy, being able to Initiate at character generation + all that extra Karma = probably. Where are you at on this guy? Attributes and Skills done? I see the base concept is solid, but what about their characteristics and personality? That'll determine a lot of the other thing you'll have to decide on.

If you're an adept, Attribute Boost AGI is a much better option than Muscle Toner. 1 Essence is about the most you want to lose.
Playability > verisimilitude.

I agree. 1 essence Is the most that the majority of adepts should ever consider losing. The exception is Burnout adepts; walking the Burnout Way is only worth it if you burn down all the way to 2 or 1 essence. The middle ground between these two is probably a bad idea under priority and sum to ten systems.

so if I do go with say cyber eyes, cyber ears, and datajack, say it's all alpha, and then during the game some how managed to get access to beta or deltaware, can I upgrade one of those (say the eyes) on it's own or does all of it need to be upgraded at the same time.

how would one modify the cost if I say wanted to buy delta grade eyes with the desired visual enhancements, but not get them implanted yet?  (im assuming the cost of cyberware includes the cyber surgery)

Since my phone alternates between decent text size and too small to read I may have missed this but why not pick up too pretty to hit as your a face.

Also what kind of military were you. Supply, special ops, artillery it affects what skills you'd probably have picked up.with 1200 karma they can probably raise all the skill groups they want and have some left over.

Most GMs that I've played with, and admittedly, not all of them, allow you to just pay the difference in cost between the original 'ware and the "upgraded" version of it. It can be upgraded one at a time (although, if you upgrade the eyes or the ears, you also need to upgrade the enhancements within those eyes and ears at the same time). So, if you wanted to upgrade the Cybereyes to Deltaware, but leave everything else as Alphaware, you can do it.

There will be those GMs that require you to sell off the 'ware and then implant the new stuff; tending to use the Missions guidelines below.

Quote from: Missions FAQ v. 1.3; page 13
Can I upgrade my bioware or cyberware?

Presuming that the item in question has not been damaged, you may sell back installed non-cultured bioware and cyberware for a flat 30 percent of its retail value (book price; taking into account alpha or beta mark-up, if any) when upgrading cyberware. Remember, if you upgrade from 3 points of "normalware" to the equivalent in alpha grade, the alpha only takes 2.4 Essence points off, but you do not get the excess back—you simply have a 0.6 point “hole” that can be filled with something else at no further Essence cost until the “hole” is exceeded.

The cost of 'ware tends to include the surgery as well, or at least, that's how it's handwaved. I've never seen your specific instance come up, but I would probably say it needs to be paid up front and then it can be "held" until a surgery can be scheduled. Your GM might impose some holding costs so that they don't try and reuse the 'ware (although deltaware is only going to be useable for you anyway ...).

If my gm approves the import of biocompatibility into our game, would this character be better of choosing cyber or bio for the qualitiy's discount?

It really depends on whether you plan on having a lot of money. I would personally go Bioware, as making it even more Essence-friendly than it already is would be awesome. There are a couple of small pieces of Cyberware that are always helpful though.

so this character will be primarily covering negotiation, and contributing to Fire Support, and likely because of his contacts and social skills, Investigations.  Aside from tailored pheremones, what bioware would this adept want or need, and what cyberware if any would he want or need?  (I am still strongly considering an incident that damaged his natural eyes and ears which led to him getting cyber replacements for them...)

Magic tbd based on if I choose any augmentations or not.
