I'm guessing that it is illegal due to the underbarrel grenade launcher, as that is the only difference between the 97 and 98 and the 98 is also illegal...

how bad is the Tradeoff of Higher native accuracy (8 vs 5) vs Damage (9 vs 10 or 11) between the kriegfaust (gun haven) and the ak97/98 or the alpha?

It depends. How much dice do you roll? If you're at 20+ it may be worth it. And why not both?

only reason for not both I can think of is expense of buying 2 assault rifles.  right now I have only a base pool of 12 dice for automatics.

so for this character, an assault rifle is basically intended to be for when the drek hits the fan, so modded for recoil comp and not for silence.... so AK or Ares Alpha or something else?

If you're going to use a grenade launcher then Alpha, if not go for FN or AK.
