Not really. It seem to happen every election cycle in the US, somebody dies so close to the election that the ballots cannot be replaced. Probably the most famous case was John Ashcroft loosing in 2000 to the late Mel Carnahan for a Senate seat.

Indeed. And whenever it happens, the person's political career is usually over. There's no way to live down "You lost to a DEAD guy?"
