I'm running an sr4 game set in las Vegas. Theres not a lot of info out there on it, so I've taken a little bit of creative liscense with what the place is like. I don't have a whole book yet, but I do have quite a bit of info on the town.

My question is about casinos, and matrix security.

The slot machines shouldnt be wireless at all, and the only way to access anything in it is through opening it up, with a credstick slot so you can put money in. Would you be able to make a fake credstick that would give you access inside, or would ou have to open it to try and jack in.

Other things like cameras would all be built in to be wired, but all buildings wouldn't be like that would they? Or is it pretty standard to have most security wired so hackers can't get in? If so, is the only way to hack in to physically break in, then find something to jack into and hack in there?

Hope I'm not bugging you guys. Thanks for the help.

I agree that the slots and gambling tables, etc, should not be wireless.  Two reasons: increased risk and it's also more "the point of not gambling online in the first place".

Seems to me that since online gambling is farily common with full VR casinos that any physical casino would play up the nostogia-old world charm angle.

But in addition to that it improves security.  Also, I would not have the slots accept nuyen, nor the tables or any other gambling device.  Bars and restaurants in the casino sure, but not any gambling machine or any dealer.  Instead do like they do now and have chips, special tokens for the slots, etc.  A form of currency that is only good in the casino and needs to be cashed in and out when people come and go.  This adds another layer of security on.  And RFID tag the higher value chips with security RFIDs.

As for the cameras, I usually ask the question "When did they build the place, when did they instal the cameras?"  The casino likely was around before wireless really took off, so it's camera system at the time was almost deff wired.  When the wireless boom came they already had a system in place so unless it needed updating they wouldn't have changed in the first place (though Crash 2.0 is a good encompassing excuse to need to replace things, lots of stuff got messed up).  Anyhow, given that, as well as they likely had very good security consultants, I would figure they'd use wired for most secure systems.

Lots of considerations with a casino.  You'll want cyberscanners on all the doors (disguised to not be intimidating and scare people away, but you gotta know if someone has eyes that can zoom across the floor and see someone's poker hand on the other side of the main floor then use a built in comm to relay the info to another player. Astral overwatch on the floor looking for any spell auras, foci, forms, and to assense people to see if they're winning because they're some sort of logic adept and can count cards.  Gotta eject those kinda people.  Lot to think about.

That all makes sense. The card counting thing would be dealt with by continuos shuffle machines that constantly shuffle 8 decks at a time. But, the seeing cards and such, yes, that could be a problem. Thanks for the ideas. =D

Well, the card counting was just an example.  The casino would generally look at any active magic as potential cheating and be watchful for it.

The Casinos will have high security, if it is one of the big ones it will have state of the art security measures. And that means it depends a little on the time line of your game. If it plays before technomancer and AI come out of the shadows, than it has no security against technomancer, if it is after the dust of the witch-hunt is settled, you can be sure that they will have technomancer in their security teams, to spot others like them or even have some of the e-Dogs on the entrance to sniff frauds out, and keep them out.
