i have an idea for a mission, where the runners are hired by an art collector to retrieve certain masterpieces. but as i am unsure of the current art stylings and whether or not art from this century would have survived or not, am looking for input.

what kind of artwork and or art stylings are popular in this century? i mean everyone loves the Ares Predator Pin Up Girl Calendar they have in their garage, but what about REAL artwork. stuff that would be in the louvre or similar high value collections (think AA megacorp wink wink)

Honestly i see no reason why current master pieces wont still be on the table in 60ish years? Even with all the wars and upheaval there still have to be plenty of Monet and Picasso in private collections. Not to mention what they could save/loot from museums before/during the drek hitting the fan.

Or put your own spin on it and they are going to get long lost art some immortal elf painted in the 4th age, preserved by magic of course.

Undoubtedly those pieces will have gone up in value putting them out of range of middle corp management.

Additionally, there might also be new "art forms".

William Gibson the founder of the cyberpunk genre did 2 novel series which touched on alternate/digital art forms.
   - Idoru had a digital pop singer, which SR might call an AI.
   - Spook Country had a minor artist in digital geolocational/historic art, which could be artistic AROs in SR.
   - And Zero History focused on a Fashion Designer that had violent reactions to heavily Branded Product Logos/Mascots guerrilla produced timeless, tagless clothes on pre-WWI refurbished machinery and 'virally (as in viral videos, not viral pathogens)' marketed eschewing typical marketing mechanisms.

As I am a massive fan of Shadowrun immersive play, let’s collab on new Art styles for the 2070’s. Let's start with Matrix art.
  • ARt: Artificial Reality-based Art. Whether it is pieces of decorative art, or full room sculpting, this is the most popular (and accessible) current Art form. Many people now spend almost their entire lives completely immersed in this art style. The young and hip are always on the lookout for hot new ARt, trying to express both their individuality and superiority through it. Most people get cheap pieces through their commlink/grid/housing. But high-end, single-owner pieces exist. The rich and powerful are always eager to flaunt their wealth and to show their “taste” by buying it. The artist Rubilon is highly sought after in North America. His current work is quite expensive, but pieces from his older “MoodVue” period are gaining in price; his Roselake just sold at auction for over 5 million nuyen.
  • Iconology: Similar to ARt, the art of icons is growing. Designers for major corporations create most icons. They are common and ubiquitous. Even Shadowrunners have hundreds of choices on their commlinks. But the hip and the rich area always demanding more. Artists such as KonKrete (with his urban-grit style), Juanita Cortez (her current Pastel Unicorn period is very popular among the children of the rich and famous), James Williams Blake (his work borders on violating Matrix protocols. His current milieu is called “Crunch”, is a mass of roiling geometric earth-tone textures. His earlier period mimicked Jackson Pollock), and the Elven artist MuseFont is the toast of the European states. Her Blue Girl #2 just went to auction for $750,000. The Museum für Digitale Kunst in Frankfurt am Main is currently running a exhibition of Iconology.
  • OvertLey: OvertLey is an AR-style that combines traditional art forms with AR “overlays”. The overlays exist solely in the Matrix. Some are free, most charge a fee, but a select few are for sale. The new owners can keep the OvertLey to themselves, or allow the world to see it, or even charge others for the right to observe it. OvertLey shares many features with ARt. The main difference lies in with the art being tied to a physical object that is displayed to the public. Many practitioners of OvertLey place multiple “views” into their art. As one moves around an OvertLey-ed piece the OvertLey changes. There is a massive debate concerning OvertLey in the Art community. The debate is very close to the issues concerning sampling in the 20th century. Issues of artistic intent, piracy/content theft, royalties/revenues, artistic expression (both of the original artist and the OvertLey-or) are argued intensely across dozens of social sites. Some museums have banned it (which has led to hacker/”tagger” wars in some instances) and others have embraced it. The SAM (Seattle Art Museum) is holding an OvertLey exhibition concentrating on its European collection. Famous/infamous acts in OvertLey include New York’s MET ongoing tagger war, the artist Jazzmine’s “record” of at least 1000 Overt views for the British Museum’s Portland Vase, and a war of violent assault (including drive-by’s) in the Olympic Sculpture Park in Seattle, and Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts annual Halloween OvertLey (especially popular with children). The most famous OvertLey “war” was between painter Jason Hsiang and the OvertLeyor known as Westwind1228. After many tagger wars and social site bile, Hsiang eventually tracked down Westwind1228’s physical location down to Atlanta and “overtleyed” Westwind1228’s studio and home with paint. Westwind1228 later sold both for large amounts of money and retired. Both locations have now been registered with the CAS Heritage Society, and are considered among Hsiang’s greatest works.

but they could have an art museum/zoo. Who says they need to all be bred as savage battle machines? It could just be a giraffe the size of a poodle or some new kind of super intelligent dog like Ein. Plenty of jaded corp execs would throw money at some fancy arm candy to brag about after the next shareholders meeting

Don't forget current trends in Art...

Things like original comic book and animation cells, vintage toys, even memorabilia like Coke machines bring big bucks today. No reason for that to change....

Yes, but the skins of those animals could be very valuable, especially if they've lived their whole lives in pens eating nothing but (whatever) and kept out of the sunlight to ensure only the finest and most healthy sheen.

I would imagine that real canvass and paints would be rather pricey, so there's every reason to believe that for the upper classes large canvasses with layers upon layers of oils would be sought after, as they would betray a wealthy -- and thus successful and sought after -- artist, as well as as a representation of a sizable amount of ¥ in themselves.  Paintings could also have electrochromatic fibers or even simply conductive fibers woven into an individual piece that could alter the mood of the painting, as well as the focus, composition, etc. at the whim of the viewer.

Who said that genecrafted critters were savage battle machines?  That's actually the LAST place you're going to find them.  However, what they are are unique and signed - art just like any other piece, and more often than not they're paid for by the individual who owns them.  I don't recall what book it was in, one of the SOTA books maybe, but they talk about just such 'artwork' - and increasing the number of items is essentially going to lower the value of each one, and thus bragging rights ...

Mr black, i really like the idea of stealing a "sculpted environment" but I'm unsure as to how the runners would be able to recreate it to make it seem like its not stolen, as is the thought behind this mission. Copy the raw data, and then leave, yes, but how are you sure that the one you have is the original, and the one they have is the fake? with paintings you can tell via techniques and even environmental conditions as to when and where the paintings were made. but a sim environment?

gene-crafting is something that would have the same problem, although I"m sure there is such a thing as a "flash clone" in 2072 (chasing the wind anyone?) however, as there are no rules for such thing i would have to make something up that goes "ding" and its done when you push a button. Not likely.

That being said, i was under the assumption (for some reason) that the popular and expensive artwork that is available now, wouldn't be available (or as available) then. good to hear that isn't the case

Raven, an artist's version of a sculpted environment would come with an owner's certificate. The certificate is of course an electronic document, of high complexity (so Firewall 6+). It would be stored on either the owners commlink or on her WAN/Host as a File. The first could be physically stolen. All could be hacked. Of course, if a rich corporate exec has an expensive piece of electronic artwork in their office, it will probably require someone to enter the location due to jamming/wireless negation. The phone could be stealthily returned, with a cheap knockoff environment on it. I recommend Horizon's "My Little Bronie" Gay Furry Porn AR environment line. Or if this run is a form of retaliation/one-upmanship, perhaps a tailored "Ha-ha, I got you jerkwad" (think of what the Joker would leave behind!) environment. This might even be given to the runners by Mr. Johnson ("Place this file in Sleazy McExec's WAN before you leave!"). The same environment could be installed on a Host/Wan. Alternatively, the runners may have to find an artist that could make a replica of the environment, just like a fake painting being left by art thieves. All of this could be made harder by requiring the runners to change the ownership certificate of the artwork to their new patron's name (see page 236, Owners), either in the exec's office or at a secure site (and possibly returned). You could also make this easier by attaching the environment to specific device/artwork (like a plaque or statuette) that the runners could steal/replace if they lack hacking skills. They could sneak in, grab it and have a NPC hacker do the rest offsite, before returning it with the fake environment.

I am still writing up classic art movements and magical art. But this could also be done magically, if the runners are magic-strong but hacking-weak. An artistically-minded mage could create an Illusion and cast it through a Sustaining Focus or an Artifact. Technically, using a Focus violates the rules (it needs to be in the caster's possession). But it could be an Artifact. I personally would call it an Artifact but use the Foci rules, so that it is fragile and a Ward could disrupt it (of course there would be a Ward to get to it and to get away with it!) And a high class Artist-Wizard would be able to make such a device without needing rules, and getting a replacement would be past the runner's capabilities (but not, perhaps, a NPC's). Getting a replacement fake would be harder. One could swap in a look-alike object. Then a mage could create a new illusion and have a bound Spirit sustain it (if the mage was a Trickster Shaman, said illusion might look like Horizon's "My Little Bronie" line...).

do not forget there are astrally active paints now so a mage can physically paint something that looks like one thing to a mundane and a whole other level opening up when viewed astrally.

So you could have a big white panel with a single black dot on it for the mundane to ponder while the real image can only be seen by those with astral perception.

Hmm.. maybe this finally explains those snobs at the local art gallery with their long winded definitions of the art piece that looked like someone threw up on the wall. :P

Do you believe in a greater WIRELESS, an Invisible(WiFi) All Seeing(detecting those connected- at least if within 100'), All Knowing(all online data) Presence that we can draw upon for Wisdom(downloads & updates), Strength (wifi boni) and Comfort (porn) or do you turn your back on it  (Go Offline)?
