I made the mistake of totally up just how much money I have spent at Daz 3d and Renderosity...it took my breath away. There are some awesome modelers producing stuff these days. Even the textures are improving dramatically. My biggest complaint has to be that the vast majority of clothing models look like it belongs in a Victoria's Secret catalog. Don't get me wrong, it is some sexy stuff but when I am putting together a fantasy or sci-fi action piece the last thing that I am looking for is a chainmail bikini and stiletto pumps. Hopefully that is going to change, especially now that we have dynamic clothing. To have jeans that are not vacu-formed to Victoria's butt or shirts clinging to every curve is such a welcome change!
Still, little by little 3d art is gaining more acceptance within the gaming community. A couple of years ago, I put up a piece on RPGnow...some supportive comments but one guy who told me that "it isn't art." These days, I am seeing more and more 3d elements layered into cover art (including SR products).
I didn't realize just how big the 3d art community is until I went to Renderosity. I remember last week logging on around 2 am and there were something like 2,000 plus people logged in.
Deviant Art is another place that I go to as well. I didn't realize that they have a location for SR art...will have to check that out! Thanks for the heads up.
