When you recieve 5+ smites a day when you haven't even posted, that gets annoying.

I've seen this complaint a few times, why is it surprising? Do we all assume that everybody who comes here does so every day? Or is it somebody who only comes to the forum on a less regular basis catching up on something, and finding out they don't like what was said?
Power corrupts.
Absolute power is kinda neat.

Ditch it, the only thing it's doing right now is giving trolls another way to 'do their thing'. Don't feed the trolls any further, please.

I don't see how smiting someone is "trolling", but your vote's been registered.

Figured it'd be at least partially misunderstood. A smite here and there wouldn't be, but the "chain smiting" that goes on is IMO.

What i have noticed and it may only be confirmation bias on my part is active newbies not just myself seem to get a lot of smites , almost as if someone finds people having positive scores........ offensive?
An Awful lot of people believe a lot of very strange things indeed for no valid reason I can see. They can`t all be right but it is quite likely they all can be very wrong.

A lot if that is the awkward phase of getting acclimated to any new social environment, Dave. People are always harshest on noobs, especially when they havent yet learned personality quirks or how to detect individual sarcasm/moods.

Since when do trolls follow any form of logic that makes sense to normal posters?

Honestly, I haven't seen any evidence of this 'chain smiting'. The question becomes "How do you know it is all from one person, and not that several people decided to smite you individually?" People assume that, because their smite total went up by 4, someone must have hit them four times, when it could be that four individuals each decided to hit them. Remember that sometimes people who are merely reading the thread, not participating it, may hand out applause and smites for all the same reasons those in the thread might. Now, if someone could provide evidence that someone was multi-smiting someone, that'd be a different story. Sometimes, your actions annoy bystanders, and they smite you for it too.

Then again, I get amused when people with under a hundred smites complain about how much people are smiting them. Forget getting your undies in a twist about it. Take your rep score, both positive and negative, as a sign that you are contributing something to the forum. Anyone can lurk, but putting your neck out there and raising an opinion (and then defending that opinion) is going to get people blasting you when they don't agree. As long as they aren't using Black Hammer, who cares? Make an impact, don't be part of the scenery.

Of course, I'm fairly certain I deserved all the smites I've gotten.

Everyone -knows- JustADude's, FastJack's, and possibly others I cant remember had their rep chain-smitten; there was little question there, and too great a hit too fast for it to be anything else. I've got a sneaking suspicion some others have caught it pretty good. I know for a few hours one day I caught it; my solution to this was to ask suspected perpetrator "what gives?" And it stopped, which still raises the question: just how annoying is it? I dont find it too annoying, but I also know exactly where most of my smites and applauds come from.

I'd be in favor of letting it go. The rep system was (rightfully) intended as theme flavor, but the fact that there is a poll on this very subject suggests that it has been taken out of its original context.

Hmm I thought the undercurrent of smites was not primarily coming from established faces( I`ve been a long time lurker) but a much more.... recent.... event?
I`ve seen various heated threads where people strongly disagree on RAW and RAI and the "combatants" are too invested in the debate and arguing their corner to mash the smite button it seems.Put me down for killing the rep system, an arguement need to stand on its  own merits. Pissing on someones shoes when no one is looking via the rep system is below sad and wretched. :(

It has been going for a while, but it does come in spurts.

As to your second point, I think part of the reason people "button mash" the smite link is to kill the rep of those who disagree with them in an attempt to try and create an air that that person's opinions aren't worth hearing out.

Also, as FastJack and Critias pointed out elsewhere, it gets worse when a lot noobs show up at once and get smite and applaud happy because of the novelty.
