So I'm putting together a Shadowrun game, and received an interesting request from a player about Ruthenium Polymer Coatings that has brought up a couple of questions in my mind:

1)  How would gear attached to you over the armor be affected (for example, wearing a utility belt over your armor)?
2)  Could other things also be coated with a ruthenium polymer, such as backpacks?

Opinions?

Look in Arsenal, in the Weapon mods section. The Chameleon Coating mod allows items larger than a pistol to not interfere with the chameleon suit's function. I'd say a utility belt wouldn't interfere, but a backpack would need a similar modification.

I missed it entirely in the weapon mods section.  Probably because I was looking for ruthenium.  Thanks!

My character ended up with a set of pouches, holsters and a backpack that are ruthenium coated to go with his chameleon suit, but truthfully I think I probably massively underpaid for them (I think it was 500 for the pouches and another 700 for the pack).  New GM, and I didn't argue at the time since I was the one getting this stuff for cheap.

On the other hand, the fact that my character has this stuff has come up maybe twice to date, so it isn't really an issue in our campaign.

I could see it working that way, if the pouches were a "slave" system that could only operate when worn over something with a full Chameleon Coat modification. Most of what you're paying for is the control circuitry, IMO.

From my experience, the easiest route to go with Ruthenium is to just put it on a Poncho that you can wear over you combat loadout and then chameleon any big weapons you have.

I would have to imagine that most of the outfits people put it on (Urb. Explorer, Full-Body Armor, SWAT/Riot, etc.) have a webbing/pouch system built into them to a degree. Even the basic chameleon suit would have to essentially have "pockets".

That said, I would probably let players use the chameleon coating mod for backpacks, rucksacks and the like. Maybe even whole pouch systems.

No reason not to allow them to put it on the pack and pouches, some suits of armor even have them built in.
