I'm creating a character that builds/fixes guns and cars, a facility costs 100,000Y, a shop costs 5,000Y, I've looked through Arsenal and there doesn't seem to be much I can do with a facility that I can't do with a shop. What's the deal here?

If a facility costs 20 times as much money what am I getting for this?

Basically you get more room to work, and a Superior Tools bonus on anything that requires a Shop or less.

A Shop is, essentially a single very well-stocked work area, while a Facility is an entire building dedicated to the task. Think Bob's Auto Repair versus the repair facilities at a major car dealership.

A shop might have maybe 2 vehicles parked in it. A facility could have a bunch of mechanics working on multiple projects if necessary.

Many of the nicer mods like turrets and HV firing need a facility.  However depending on the GM, you might be able just take the Inadequate or Unavailable tools (-2 and -4 respectively) modifier to those tests which isn't too bad.  Your GM may also just not let you do the modification as well.  Personally I'll let people do facility work in a shop with a Inadequate tools mod, but that's just me.

This just made me think of a new quality:

Quote
Technical Genius (10 BP per rank, max 3 ranks)
(Aka, MacGuyvering)

When making any Test that requires physical tools, the Character treats their available tools as one level higher than their actual rating for meeting the tool requirement threshold. For each level of Technical Genius above the tool threshold, the player may choose to take either a +2 bonus on each roll, or lower the interval by one step, to a minimum of one Simple Action. This bonus is separate from the Superior Tools bonus provided by having tools that beat the required rating without the use of this quality.

If no tools are available, the Character must make a Perception+Intuition test (threshold based on the character's location) to scavenge the proper materials. If the test is failed, the number of Hits by which the Character misses the threshold is subtracted from his Technical Genius rating for the purpose of the desired task.

Potentially abusable, but I'm pretty sure MacGuyver somehow managed to get 4 ranks in it.

Max it at 3 levels, and make it 10 BP.  That is a very heavy-duty ability.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the Tools cost is only for the price of the Tools. You still have to have somewhere to store/use them. A shop can be stored in a much smaller place (back of a van technically), but a facility will require actual floorspace to be rented for all the machinery.

Ya, you use foil tape on the duct work.  The duct tape goes on the insulation jacket.

That's because it's not DUCT-tape, it's DUCK-tape.

It got its name from the fact that it was originally used to create water-tight seals on things like ammo canisters by taping it over the seam around the lid.
