In real life my .38 is named Rita. It came with the name......

When I was in the Infantry my M-4/203 her name was Betty.  When I was a SAW gunner it was Buella.  Beulla sang real pretty, one time we were at a range using "Iron Maidens" (steel targets set at an angle so the ricochets didn't injure anybody) Beulla started a fire with the sparks.   It was quite impressive considering it was at Ft. Lewis.  BTW, this is real life not Shadowrun.

"Durandal"

A massive sword, 1.5m of sharpened steel with "Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam" etched along the blade and a leather wrapped hilt that fits the hand almost suspiciously well.

[Claymore with Weapon Focus 2, Personalized Grip. Reach 2, Damage (STR/2+4), AP-1, +3 Attack]

A few spirits and paracritters have been quite surprised that yes, the troll with the sword -can- hurt them. Immunity to Normal Weapons dose nothing.

My rigger Hambone had a distinctive style that required him to name and talk to all his guns. Sadly, they didn't have personality software, but in retrospect, they totally should have.

Quote
'Sanchez' (Survival Knife w/ Custom Look 1 and Personalized Grip)
Damage: (Str/2)+1P | AP: -1

Sanchez has a matte black finish with silver etchings up the blade, designed to look like ivy climbing up its surface. The name 'Sanchez' is engraved on the blade near the hand guard in fanciful script.

'Sebastian' (Franchi SPAS-22 w/ Custom Look 1, Melee Hardening, and Personalized Grip)
Damage: 7P(8P) | AP: -1 | Mode: SA/BF | RC: 1(2) | Ammo: 10(m) loaded with Shock Lock rounds.

Sebastian is a shiny chrome shotgun with black grip, stock and foreend. The barrel is etched out to look like a dragon's mouth, and the name 'Sebastian' is engraved on the receiver in fanciful script below the ejection port.

'Margaret' (Morissey Elan w/ Custom Look 1, Melee Hardening, and Personalized Grip, in a Concealable Holster)
Damage: 4P | AP: - | Mode : SA | RC: 1 | Ammo: 5(c) loaded with Hi-C Plastic rounds w/ 1 spare clip.

Margaret is painted a bright red with black racing stripes flowing from the front of the gun to the back in tapered lines. The name 'Margaret' is written across the entire left side of the barrel in fanciful silver script.

'Alexander' (Armtech MGL-12 w/ Custom Look 1, Melee Hardening, Personalized Grip 1 and external Smartgun)
Damage: Grenade | AP: Grenade | Mode: SA | RC: 1 | Ammo: 12(c) loaded with 12 Incendiary Gecko Grenades.

Alexander is painted jet black, with the name 'Alexander' engraved across the side, above the grip, in white script.

'Alexi' (Armtech MGL-6 w/ Custom Look 1, Melee Hardening, Personalized Grip, Internal Smartgun and Airburst Link, in a Hidden Gun Arm Slide)
Damage: Grenade | AP: Grenade | Mode: SA | RC: 1 | Ammo: 6(c) loaded with 6 High Explosive Grenades.

Alexi is painted in pure white, with the name 'Alexi' engraved across the entire side of the gun in black script.

'Bessie' (Ruger Super Warhawk w/ Custom Look 2, Personalized Grip, Firing Selection Change Large Mod and External Smartgun)
Damage: 6P(7P) | AP: -2(-3) | Mode: SS/FA | RC: 1 | Ammo: 6(cy) loaded with Ex-Explosive rounds, w/ 24 spare Ex-Explosive rounds.

Bessie is a black tinted revolver with a pearl grip. The barrel of the gun has the name 'Bessie' engraved in fanciful gold script, which flows out from the name to cover the majority of the barrel. The pearl grip is etched in gold with the image of a bucking bronco, and each chamber of the cylinder is etched in gold as well, showing 6 separate stages of a bomb exploding. When the weapon is fired on full auto, this essentially plays out as a small flip book.

Maxwell (Ares Redline w/ Custom Look 1 and Melee Hardening)
Damage: 5P | AP: -half | Mode: SA | Ammo: 10(c) loaded with Power Clip.

Maxwell is a black laser pistol with gold detail lines. the name 'Maxwell' is written across the side in fanciful script.

Gustave the Terrible (Ares Thunderstruck Gauss Rifle w/ Custom Look 2, Melee Hardening, Personalized Grip and Powered Break Down)
Damage: 9P | AP: -4 | Mode: SA | RC: 1(2) | Ammo: 10 (c) + Energy loaded with Gauss Rifle Rounds and Power Clip.

Gustave the Terrible is a deep olive green in the body while the barrel is a shiny chrome, deeply etched out to take the shape of a dragon coiling around from end to end, the opening of the barrel becoming the dragon's mouth. The name 'Gustave the Terrible' is written across the body of the gun in gold script on the right side, and 5 skulls adorn the left, signifying the number of kills the weapon has achieved so far.

My combat mage named his blades. His main one is Frozen Wind.

Frozen Wind (Katana) (22100 nuyen) - (STR/2+3)P, Reach 1, -1 AP
**Weapon Focus - Force 2. +2 to tests, deals normal damage on astral plane.
**Custom Look - Level 2. +2 to tests involving reputation or intimidation. 1 Slot
**Personalized Grip - +1 to melee tests. 1 Slot.
Frozen Wind is the name of Mirikon's prized possession, a katana that has been customized to his designs, and has been enchanted as a weapon focus. The blade appears to be carved from unmelting blue ice, and is razor sharp. When viewed through AR, an icy mist seems to fall constantly off the blade whenever it is drawn, and glowing sperethiel runes can be seen, naming the blade. The hilt has been molded to fit his hand perfectly.

I have to admit, I never really thought of naming my weapons, however unique they might be.  In my view, naming a sword is the job of its maker, naming a gun ... I dunno.  Street gossip, I guess.  I certainly wouldn't normally use it.

"I parked on the other side of the street, and popped the truck, moving around and moved a few things around, accessing the hidden compartment where Matilda lay.  She was a fat, cast-iron Russian Slitch of the hardest order, a AK-97 with an integrated smartgun link, and a short-barrelled Defiance T-250 attached by a couple of machined pieces and tied into the same smartgun system.  I swapped out the magazine of full metal jacket rounds with a much more sedate gel loadout, and manually emptied the shotgun shells into the trunk of the Jackrabbit a pump at a time, then started to hand load in those rounds." - Debt of Non-Blood, Chapter 5

Customized AK-97 named "Matilda"
Rifle:  Damage: 6P;  AP:  -1; Fire Mode:  SA/BF/FA; Recoil Compensation:  -4; Magazine Capacity:  38 (Box Mag)
Shotgun:  Damage:  7P; AP:  -1; Fire Mode:  SA; Recoil Compensation:  -; Magazine Capacity:  5 (Tubular Mag)
Modifications:  Integrated Smartgun Link, Gas Vent 3, Personalized Grip (Vat-Grown Walnut Furniture), Underbarrel Weapon (Defiance T-250 Shotgun)

In my case, Durandal was name used by the person that gave it to the character with the suggestion that it really was the blade carried by Roland, knight of Charlemagne, after being recovered from a stone in the  Pyrenees.

Here are a few customized weapons from my current character Lucky, an ork professional bodyguard.

"Mr. Grouchy"
A .605 caseless over under rifle that has been cut down to carbine size. A dark cherry stock with silvered fittings give a frame to two barrels engraved with rose vines that been died red and green.Despite the size of the rifle and bullets, the rifle itself is silent in operation.
PJSS Elephant Rifle w/Smartlink, Skinlink and Concealable Holster
[Electric Firing, Barrel Reduction, Custom Look 2, Silencer]
Conceal Rating: +4 (-7 to hear, -9 with Sub-sonic rounds)
DamageAPModeRCAmmoAvailability
9P-1SS12(b)12F
[<snip>

A concealable holster for a double barreled carbine?   :o  Just how many times did you apply Barrel Reduction?

An elephant gun in such a large caliber probably started out at least 40 inches overall, probably closer to 48 inches.  Sure, a custom holster, but concealable? Maybe for a troll and it's on his back not hip/wrist/ankle/waistband.   ;)

Then again, my normal SR GM, several of the other players, and myself are all, firearms enthusiasts (ok, fine, we're gun nuts), and we apply what we feel is common sense based on our experiences with real rifles and carbines.  (And considering SR's firearms rules, we probably shouldn't.)

Otherwise, a very nice flavorful weapon.  Nice to see custom look especially.

Cordially,

Eric

Think of it more as a nice strap in system for the overcoat that keeps the weapon from swinging around. I've actually seen one for an old short barreled shotgun that my great grandfather used to carry and he wasn't that large of a man (right at 6', maybe 200 lbs. tops) so for a big brawny ork I don't really see the issue.

Definitely not a pistol holster, but the book doesn't limit you to only pistol style holsters, and the size of most weapons means that the weapon is still obvious to most trained professionals, but the "attempt" to make it more subtle while still noticeable is what the Bodyguard was going for. The overall weapon is probably around 30 inches (the CZ 550s are about 45 inches long stock to end in most variants, lop off about half the barrel for the barrel reduction and I figure 30 inches would be fair).

Even something like what Max had in the Mad Max trilogy (It's really shown in The Road Warrior, I find) for his Sawed-Off Shotgun would work well.  Of course, that isn't concealed.

See, that's the difference in mental processes.  We read barrel reduction reducing range by 20% and we figured it was about a 20% reduction in length of the barrel itself.  So the CZ 550's have what, 24 inch barrels, with about 1/2 to 2/3 of that sticking out past the stock (roughly 12 to 16")?  By our thinking, a barrel reduction would be about (24*.20=4.8 round to) 5 inches off the barrel and a recrowning. To cut it down to the hand guard would be 3 barrel reductions for the 16-ish inches.  YMMV I suppose.  :)

You can't take the same mod more than once.

Also, if you apply that across the board, turning a Super Warhawk (Assuming a 5-6 inch barrel normally) into a snubnose would leave you with almost the same gun (4-4.8 inch barrel). Most snubnosed revolvers have their barrels reduced to 3 inches or less from what I've seen.

I don't think the 10%/20% extension/reduction rule was meant to apply to the barrel as well so much as just be a quick and easy rule since that is what SR4 strives for.

In real life, cutting down a barrel isn't nearly as simple as far as the effects on range and muzzle velocity as Shadowrun models.

Many rifles have barrels long enough that cutting down their length won't actually have much of an effect until the barrel gets to a certain length. The propellant will burn completely by the time the bullet gets to a certain point in the barrel, after which there isn't much more gas expansion and as such no more acceleration. So if you have a 26 inch barrel, but the powder burns completely by the time the bullet hits the 20 inch mark, cutting the barrel down to 20 inches won't affect the muzzle velocity (and therefore range) a heck of a lot. The critical length varies from weapon to weapon.

Even shortening the barrel past that point is not a strictly linear reduction - cutting 20% past the critical length does not result in a simple 20% range reduction. In fact the range reduction doesn't drop off all THAT much until you start getting to really short lengths.
