Greetings my fellow Shadowrun fans!

I'm posting today because I recently posted a joke in another board (see "Post your real life stats!" in Character Creation and Critique) which nobody has told me is in bad taste.  Had someone expressed that they were offended or that they were somehow disgusted with my joke, I would have considered editing or erasing my post.  Instead, one person (I'm certain it's just one person because nobody's even reading this topic anymore and the joke is funnier than it is offensive) has been seeking me out and trolling the smite button at every opportunity.  Over the last week, my smite has doubled from -7 (all of which I'm sure I earned with biting sarcasm or frustration during rules debates) to a whopping -14.  I have said nothing shocking, controversial, or even sarcastic in probably the last 3 weeks except for in this one thread, so my extra -7 couldn't really have come from anywhere else.

Whoever you are, get bent.  You accomplish nothing by sending my peers on this forum the false message that I'm a troll.  I'm not interested in getting into a smite war with you, so I thought that calling you out for the coward you are would be the most appropriate course of action.

Hugs and kisses,

-nojosecool

On a metaforum note, I think the smite feature is being abused as it is right now and would like to ask the moderators if we can limit smiting to one smite per post per user.  Sure, if someone's really determined they can still be a serial smiter, but this does put a hard cap on the smiting to however many posts a person has made.  Plus, it adds a few more steps and makes it less convenient to do so  which ought to discourage it.  Maybe putting up a counter for how many smites/applauses a person has made would be another good feature.  I'm not sure if any of this is possible, but they're features I'd like to see.

Thanks Mods!

I'm just trying to figure out how my score ended up the way it did.

I guess folks get "Applaud" and "Smite" confused fairly often.  :P

Does it really matter what your rep is? It's already limited to once per hour I believe. The only way to really stop smite spam is to get rid of smite and negative rep. Otherwise there will be assholes that try to break the system.

I know what you're talking about though. I feel like if I actually take part in a debate I'm going to come out with three to five smites.

While I agree and empathize with your general sentiment and frustration, here, just remember that being irritated over someone humping your rep score into the ground isn't a free pass to violate the TOS, and outright insult that person.  Doing so makes you likely to hit your rep where it really matters (IE, with the mods, who can shut down your ability to post, kick you out the door, etc, etc).

You might want to edit that last post, this being the case, before one of the real grown-ups comes along and spots it, and especially before whoever's already got a bone to pick with you (as evidenced by them poking your rep time and again) sees that comment and eagerly clicks the report button.

While I can certainly empathize with how you feel, I do have to say that sometimes, no matter what, something you say is going to be disagreeable to person(s) on the forums. right now, the settings are that you have to have at least 10 posts before you can applaud/smite and you have to wait one hour between clicking on either.

The rep system is actually working pretty well, from my point of view. And that's from a guy that's got the most smites on the board (at last count, at least).

Your applauds aren't too bad, either.

Which reminds me, I have to smite you due to having to go "Not that FastJack, the other one" too many times!

Don't put too much stock in your rep scores.  People will smite you because they don't like your side in a debate (even if you stay within bounds of civility.) They will smite you because they don't like your avatar, your sig, whatever.  Most people use the system as intended, I think, but one person with a axe to grind and a hint of ocd can skew the numbers.  Because its anonymous and thus comes with no accountability some people will do nutty things with it.  File it under doesn't matter.
