A knight errant was basically a knight that did not have a land, so he was "erring" from spot to spot.

An errand boy would be insulting as they would basically be glorified paper boys.

What about Lancers?  A mercenary troop of four horsemen in Italy was known as a lance.  One of the troop would always armored like a knight.  Knight Errant provides security for money just like mercenaries have done forever.
