Actually, that's another reason I like the Smiting--less work for us moderators. Let's us just sit back in the champagne room, enjoy a glass of bubbly with the dancers while pontificating on the finer aspects of REDACTED and REDACTED.
Sorry, people seem to be ignoring the key question here.

*ahem* and to where are these dancers of which you speak?  ;D ::) 8)

I don't have a problem with the applaud/smite system. Put up a post that people like and you get positive feedback and the reverse is true as well, ying and yang. I would rather see a smite tally rise than have people stocking up on gasoline for responses that foster grudges.
It's not the one with your name on it; it's the one addressed "to whom it may concern" you've got to think about.

Are you suggesting that smites and applauds should somehow show on the relevant post? Like a border glow, or a counter?

Explanation?

I would rather see somebody click the smite button then post a retort that doesn't further the discussion and leads to flame wars.

Sichr, a few smites is pretty much par for the course and I would not suggest that you take it to heart. Moderators, from what I have seen will garner more, Fastjack being far more visible than I is a good example. Fastjack is a good Moderator, puts a lot of work in on the forums and polices with diligence and that means he is going to vex some...'comes with the territory'. (Before anybody asks...yes...I think Fastjack is a better Moderator than myself. I would rate myself at the bottom of the Mod pool here, both in terms of activity and tact.)

When you see the smite tally grow considerably (i.e. from 6 to 70) over a period of a week, then it is probably linked to something that was posted.

Sid, I would actually like to see applauds/smites afixed to specific posts, although I bet it would be a devil to code.

Thought I should report back on this one. After looking into this sort of individual post score keeper the conventional wisdom is that every code modification potentially creates new conflicts within the SMS program. Our desire is to have a stable platform that serves the need of the community.

Paul has requested that any questions or complaints be directed to him. I would hope that any disappointment about this decision is tempered by the exceptional work that Paul has done in clearing out the spam bots. The fact that my email is no longer full of notifications of spam posts has certainly been a welcomed change for me.  :)

All of us.. and my email account is happier for not having to be overloaded by spambot reporting.
