...well if you go "old school" make the gun a "throwback", use the aforementioned induction pad, up the sleeve micro FO line, connected to a UDC on the mask that feed to the display, issue solved.  Yeah, you may get strange looks from others, but at least your gun is no longer vulnerable to wireless tampering.

The issues with the laser sight is you also can end up "painting" your own position, it's affected by smoke/fog, and you only get a +1 to accuracy.  With some guns, (especially pistols and shotguns) you need all the bonuses to accuracy you can get.

It is interesting in that in the old rules it was described that all the "brains" (including calibration for local conditions) for the smartlink were in the gun (hence the double weapon cost for modification).

Most Hanguns can be "yanked" to Acc 7 or 8  (personalized Grip f.E.) even without Smart or Laserpointer or Red Dot
so You'll need 20-25 Dice in the Pool to be affected

and if the ACC 8 Gun than has ACC 9 with Laser dot or Acc 10 with Smartgun makes no big Difference anymore (unless your CHar has a Pool of 30 Dice+)

...Hard Targets is not Missions legal yet and won't be until a month after the dead tree version is released.  That is no help for the character I am currently building.

I live in Germany and I don't ....care about "Missions Legal"  ! I care about Shadowrun RAW ;)
(and since this is not a Missions Thread neither should You :)
You'd be only Hamstringing yourself (is that the right word ? )

ahhh I see, You're building a Missions Char, ...
Hmmm, Well than You truly have to check if anything mentioned which is RAW by itself is also Missions legal. I don't know about that since we here in Germany don't play Missions by Missions rules, only by RAW

...unfortunately here in the States we do. I have the full Missions FAQ and Hard Targets is not legal yet.  Crikey, we just got  the ability to use Chrome and Flesh last month (October).

The only downside to the the red dot is making quick drawing harder for your pistol. Plus side, red dot displays ammo for you (know it is not yet missions legal, but it is so much nicer in many ways than the laser sight).

Agreed. This looks like a 'training wheels' edition, that you can use to introduce someone to the setting, and then shift over to something like 5E or 4E. Like how D&D 5E is best used as training wheels for D&D 3.X.

Turned in Toxshaman for ¥1 million/4 once.

Quote from: Core pg 424, Firearms
Firearms come with wireless capability and a digital ammunition counter. Ammunition (p. 433) is sold separately. All firearms have the following wireless bonuses in addition to any wireless bonuses on each model:

Wireless: The weapon displays an ARO that tells you ammo levels and ammo type loaded. If you have a DNI, you get two additional benefits. First, ejecting a clip (for weapons that have them) is a Free Action rather than a Simple Action. Second, changing fire modes (on models that have more than one) is a Free Action rather than a Simple Action.
You don't need a Smartgun installed for ammo count, or ejecting the magazine. The book repeats those things as though it makes Smartguns unique and special. But really all you get from them is Accuracy and bonus dice.

And improved Take Aim (see p. 178)

True, but for those that don't want their guns bricked (hello gun-adepts) having your guns' wireless option off makes it unhackable. But to have the fast eject and ammo counter you really want fast hands (adept power) and red dot/halo sight. Now you have your ammo counter and fast reloading without needing wireless guns. But, like Halinn said the improved aim feature is really nice, especially for longarm (sniper or sport rifles) users and maybe decent for assault rifles.

...so what if you have a Datajack the Smartgun Implant, and are hardwired directly to a "throwback" gun (like in the "old days")?  Would you still not get the basic Smartlink benefits (just no +2 pool bonus)?

Smartgun goes in the gun, smartlink in you, glass, helmet, etc.

If your "throwback" doesn't have wireless connectivity, but it does have the Smartgun mod installed... and you run a cable from the gun to your Datajack... and you have Smartlink eyeware of some kind...

You still get the Accuracy bonus, but you don't get the bonus dice for shooting. The +1 or +2 to attack are listed as Wireless Bonuses.

I don't have Chrome Flesh in front of me at the moment, but if you have the internal router ware installed and you connect to your gun via DNI, could you get the wireless bonus without the wireless being "on", or would that not count as being "part of you"?

Quote from: Chrome Flesh pg 84, Internal Router
This allows the use of some wireless functionality, such as the quick-loading function of a smartgun or the engagement of a smuggling compartment, but not those that require an outside network or similar function, such as skillwire downloads.

Quote from: Core pg 214, The Matrix
Everybody uses the Matrix. Most shadowrunners have multiple pieces of gear that use it, often interacting with the Matrix without them knowing it. Smartlinks use it to look up local conditions and calculate firing solutions...

The +2 Accuracy bonus comes directly from having the Smartgun installed. That's the HUD and range finder and all that stuff. But the Wind penalty adjustment and the bonus dice come from "an outside network" and wouldn't work unless it could connect to the Matrix.
