I've just woken up to my daughter freaking out about something in the lounge and honestly I don't blame her. She's grown up in the UK and never seen one of these, I saw a few of them myself as a kid around Toti and used played with them so I know they don't bite or anything but just what is this thing and can they be kept as a pet?

I just quickly put in this spider with scorpion pincers and google images spat this out, couldn't find anything on google itself though.

It's a tailless whip scorpion:

As a side note: a creature of this family has been used by Mad-eye Moody in the Goblet of Fire to demonstrate the unforgivable curses on.
