This post contains character creation guidelines, rules clarifications, and house rules currently under effect. I will refresh this post if anything changes.

Character creation

The theory behind below guidelines is that your characters are young, talented, but not established people, parts of normal, legal society. They show promise in whatever expertise they pursue and are able to adapt to situation changes quickly.
•   The following books are all available: SR4A, Arsenal, Augmentation, Runner’s Companion, Street Magic, Unwired, Way of the Adept, Way of the Samurai. If you want to use something from another official sourcebook badly, I’m open to reasonable suggestions.
•   Characters can be created with 320 BPs
•   Please try to use baseline metatypes, or ones that don’t stand out too much. I’d appreciate not using SURGE but I won’t limit non-outstanding mutations. Drakes, HMHVV-infected, and non-metahuman sapients are out.
•   You can spend maximum 200 BPs on attributes (without special). I decided to use a higher than half BPs limit to avoid min-maxing as much as possible.
•   You can have a single skill at rating 5. All other skills are limited to rating 4. Groups are limited to rating 3. Knowledge and language skills are limited at rating 5.
•   Your contacts may have maximum connection rating of 4. Loyalty is not limited. Everyone gets CHA*3 free contact points.
•   You may spend maximum 40 BPs on gear. Availability limit is 10, and no F rated. If you feel that something above these is essential to your character, I’m open to suggestions. Size customization can be disregarded at character creation.
•   Everyone starts with the negative quality Sinner (non-criminal), not getting the BP bonus from it, but it doesn’t count against the BP limit of qualities. You may take maximum 25 BPs worth of negative and maximum 35 BPs worth of positive qualities. (I didn’t reduce the positive limit proportionally in order to allow magicians with mentor spirits some further opportunities.) Furthermore, there are some qualities that don’t go well with a legal lifestyle, but I trust you all not to take those.
•   And again, no hackers please.

House rules (H) and clarifications (C)

I’d like to use the following house rules, but they are subject to discussion as I try to keep the fun of us all in mind.

•   Regaining Edge (C) – personal regains and refreshment during a run is GM’s option. Edge always refreshes at the end and at the beginning of each run. (So you will have the use of your full Edge pool in each downtime.)
•   Movement (H) – for somewhat more realistic movement rates, i’d halve them, except for purposes of sprinting. Running gives only +1 die to defense tests, sprinting gives the +3 dice given in the tables. Sprinting also doubles the running penalties (-4 dice). You can charge while sprinting, which nullifies the penalties (but doesn’t give +2 dice as while running).
•   Defending against melee attacks (C) – The three main defense modes are as follows, with full defense options in brackets:
o   Dodge – Reaction + Dodge + (Dodge vagy Gymnastics)
o   Block – Reaction + Unarmed + (Unarmed vagy Dodge vagy Gymnastics)
o   Parry – Reaction + Weapon skill + (Weapon skill vagy Dodge vagy Gymnastics)
•   Full Defense (C) – You only have to determine if you are using full defense against melee or ranged attacks when declaring it. The exact method of defending against melee attacks doesn’t have to be declared.
•   Strength affecting recoil (C) - I intend to use that.
•   Exceeding the condition monitor (H) – Whenever someone receives Stun damage that was originally Stun (not resulting from high armor), and suffers damage overflow, the overflow is reduced by half his or her BOD. (It is very hard to beat a troll into pulp with simply your hands.)
•   Healing (C) – Natural healing is subject to Slower healing rules.
•   Reputation (H) – I don’t use the system presented in the book. Social bonuses and penalties from status and perception will be handled by me.
•   Binding (H) – One of the spirit abilities that didn’t allow initial resistance. To use Binding, the spirit rolls MAG + STR versus the target’s BOD. One net hit is required. Further tests are not modified.
•   Concealment (C) – FAQ clearly states that the ability can be used to hide astral presence. If used that way, the ability is a mana ability.
•   Movement (H) – One of the spirit abilities that didn’t allow initial resistance. We (with my other group) also found the proportions a bit too much. To use the ability, the spirit rolls MAG + STR versus the target’s BOD. Increase in speed is net hits (maximum spirit’s force) * 10% if the target’s BOD isn’t greater than the user’s MAG, half that if it doesn’t exceed MAG*2, and there is no effect if it is greater than MAG*2.
•   Spirit Edge (C) – Edge of spirits is F/2 rounded down.
•   Stick-n-shock ammo (H) – It does not exist in my universe.
•   Advanced Lifestyles (C) – we use it.
•   Metamagic (C) – can be learned for 15 karma apiece (for initiates only) as the Street Magic suggests
•   Tactical Networks (H) – tactical networks provide an initiative bonus, as well as half their ratings for appropriate skills. These bonuses can only be used by characters possessing DNI but sensor channels may be provided by anybody. Exactly how many viewpoints can be taken into account in a situation is subject to GM (if you are in a tight group, TacNet won’t really relate too much additional information).

Character advancement

•   As I stated, you can count on a faster advancement scheme.
•   Learning skills entails the rolls described in the rulebook.
•   Exchanging Karma/Nujen (H) – When you receive karma, you may immediately change maximum 20% of it to nujen at a rate of 2500 apiece. When you spend karma, you may immediately purchase maximum 20% of it for 3000 apiece. This is due to realizing that some builds require more karma than nujen and vice versa. In-game justification is that you spend time to work (for gaining nujen) or spend nujen to spend time with advanced instructors (to buy karma).

== Description ==
A greying male of average build and stature. he has a short trimmed beard and tends to look after himself, visiting the gym reasonably often and trying to eat well.
He's partial to a beer, likes playing pool and loves flying his drones and tinkering in the garage till the wee small hours.

== Background ==
Matt grew up in a decent enough area and his parents both worked normal jobs and earned normal money.
He graduated technical college but soon after, fell in with the wrong crowd and got wound up in allsorts of trouble for boosting cars, doing drugs, petty crime and the like.
His dad's health took a turn for the worse and Matt promised his dad he'd sort himself out and live clean, really make a go of life. Luckily, KE referred him onto a youth offenders scheme rather than interring him. The crux of the scheme included sponsorship from major corporations, a "corporate citizenship" program if you will, in reality though, this turned out to be a recruitment drive for cheap labour, and Matt soon found himself working for a civil engineering firm.
He progressed well throughout the lower ranks of the company and applied for an opening as a drone pilot, his first "proper pay " job, and got it. The firm paid for his implants and he has worked the role for several years now, his department specialising in exterior building inspection and preventative maintenance.
They performed well last year, hitting budget and his team received a small bonus. Matt invested this into a small industrial unit which he has outfitted to be a workshop/garage. Matt moonlights here to help pay the bills, repairing cars and drones and this line of work has brought him closer to the shadows, as those who don't want their ride inspected at the local ford dealership tend to come to him first...
He feels he has hit a glass ceiling at the company, and worries that his background prevents him scaling the ladder. Even though he earns a reasonable wage, sometimes even moonlighting as a taxi driver and doing a few jobs at the garage wont meet the shortfall on the rent.

Contacts: scrap metal merchant is an old contact from his "wilder" days that he is only recently back in contact with, since getting his garage up and running.
Danny boy has his fingers in many pies and tends to specialise in illegal salvage operations and trafficking stolen vehicles, and is always a good source for spare parts.

Lorenzo plays pool at the same club as Matt, he knows a few people and always has an inside story on a bent politician or dodgy policeman to share over a beer.
Lorenzo seems to be a nice guy, and speaks with an enthusiastic Italian accent. He is also considerably better at pool than Matt!

The Butcher: An acquiantance Matt came across via tweety. He is a street doc specialized in implant surgery and maintenance, being part cybertechnician.

A young, caucasian male with hair tied back in a ponytail. Facial hair covers his jaw andgrants him a moustache and soul patch. His plain clothes lay limp on a lean body, stengthened somewhat fromthe strain of frequent summoning of spirits to his aid.

== Background ==
Joel was born and initially raised in Cardiff, England. His life was fairly mundane as a child, somewhat caring parents, a lack of dramatic events... Perhaps not the odd fixation with the relatively recent stone circles or the one with wolves. His idea of a holiday was visiting the castle of Caerdrydd, much to the confusion of his parents.
As censorship spread throughout the land, Joel was eventually born just before the revolutions started. The family decided to remain in Cardiff for the moment, not yet having the resources to leave the country and wanting to support their homeland as best they could.
However, after ten years of revolution, tolerance for the revolution ran out and they had saved up enough to move the family away from the conflict. Joel had been spending more and more time in Cardrydd much to the confusion of his parents, and objected most unhappily when he found out he’d soon never be able to see it again. An explanation that his family was scared for themselves and him due to the conflict seemed to oddly calm him down and an explanation that they’d be moving to a location near a more natural area seemed to make him happy, even without those odd stone circles.
The family moved into Lower Queen Hill a little after Joel turned nine. Joel’s newer methods of spending time were to visit Discovery Park in the Magnolia, to read books on the nature of the stone circles back in England, or to read about wolves in general. This odd behaviour was soon explained a little while after the child turned 10. Aztechnology came up to their home and ‘requested’ to test the child for magic. His parents agreed and called the currently-curious child to the living room whereupon he was tested, and they discovered he had a type of magic calling back from his homeland. He already seemed attuned to the Druidic traditions, appropriate for someone so obsessed with Caerdrydd.
His parents wanted to object to practically losing their child to the megacorp, except that said child looked so eager to find learn about being a mage. Reluctantly they let him go, hoping they would end up seeing him again.
Joel himself was happy to finally find an answer to the odd feelings of warmth he got when at the stone circles, to figure out what that odd voice was, advising him on decisions, encouraging him to honour the bonds of family.
Joel took to training happily, especially when he was able to learn that his odd ‘advisor’ had been what was known as a ‘mentor spirit’, one that he showed respect to, even as he demonstrated a willingness to learn how to summon spirits and to engage in combat. He was grouped into the branch’s combat department as everything he did was suitable in a fight. He never displayed his talent openly, finding that as he grew up he preferred a simple leather jacket over flashy clothing.
Upon completion of his training, he was hired as a wage mage, his senses excellent for spotting intruders, both magical and mundane. He saw his family whenever he could, but now had a home in his own right near Capitol Hill. He did his best to make sure his family was supported and safe, Wolf would demand no less.

Leroy is a young dwarf of African American descent. He was accepted into the fire department before finishing college pending his successful graduation. Still new to the profession, he more than makes up for it in his application of book smarts.

Leroy is a loud mouthed braggart fireman who always makes fires out to be larger than they really were. He tries to make himself the center of attention at the pub, embelishing his heroics with false death defying stunts. He has a secret fascination with fire, prefering to start them rather than put them out, and this fascination is only going to grow when he is thrown into the shadows and forced to destroy rather than preserve.

-Diego Nicolo (31 orc male): a mafia lieutenant working for the Finnigan family.  He was in charge of the gambling den she worked in and after it got shut down, he got her a job with a security firm.
-Annie (26 human female): a ex-colleague of Jade in the gambling den.  She wasn’t there when Lonestar came knocking and now works for a massage parlor in a back alley downtown Seattle.  One of the few friends she has in the biz, especially after saving her from a more violent customer.
-Vincent Bogetto (42 human male): a street doc she went to for regular check-ups.  He used to be a surgeon in a big hospital before he was kicked out, but it was that or nothing.  He also installed most of her cyber and now does the maintenance.
-Judy: hacker they worked with on their first run.

Physical Description:
Small for a troll (she wasn't large as human either), Miko is still a large woman.  Some bio-enhancements have made her skin silky smooth.  Her horns are smooth and curved on the side of her head.

Miko was born as Mariko Hamasaki in a Shiawase hospital, as daughter of a R&D researcher and the assistant head of R&D North America.  It was a bit of a scandal in the corporation, as her Japanese father had married a local woman, but as she was a brilliant scientist with two patents to her name, this was overlooked.  The first 14 years of her life were fairly normal for a corp brat: living in corp housing, going to corp schools with other corp brats and more of the same.  The comet and the crash were just things from her youth, with the only problem during the crash was a lack of electricity and some extra bodyguards that followed them around.  For the rest of her youth, what she wanted, she got, including learning archery or karate (both of which were traditions in Japan).

Everything changed when she turned 14 and she turned into a troll, a bit after a holiday in Australia (probably a mana surge there had started the changes).  Her father was in the running for the position of head of R&D and the last thing he could use was the embarrassment of a troll as daughter.  The solution was very simple and he kicked her out of the house.

It wasn’t easy to survive on the streets for a 14-year old who always had everything she wanted.  As troll she matured much quicker than human girls, it didn’t take long for her to get ‘recruited’ into the prostitution, working in a mafia gambling den which also provided extra ‘services’.  She worked mostly for troll men, but also a number of orks and even humans who wanted something special.  Here she was fitted with her first pieces of bioware, a sleep regulator and clean metabolism regulator.

As she was easily the strongest of the girls and due to the karate lessons of her youth, also one of the best trained, she was also the bodyguard of the gambling den/brothel, even going so far as to implant some extra cyber- and bioware for this.  In her free time she even managed to do some more karate and archery, this time with bows she wouldn’t be able to lift when she was little.  She also did some escort work, including guarding the person she was with (although it was understood that the ‘boss’ would sleep with the ‘bodyguard’ afterwards).

This all changed at the end of 2071, during the tempo scare, when Lonestar did an attack on the spot where she worked.  She was to get a criminal SIN, but they cut her a deal, giving her a new normal SIN in exchange for information on a higher up in Knight Errant.  Lonestar was in competition with KE for the Seattle Police contract and letting a simple prostitute back on the street was a small thing if it could get them some scandalous information on people working for their number one competitor.

Back on the street she got a part-time job in a security firm, thanks to the intervention of Diego Nicolo, a lieutenant of the Finnigan family.  As her savings are running out, she would have to look for another job.

OK, i started up IC, and linked it in the first post of this topic. I have some minor finishing touches to make, then i will post again and the game itself will start. In the meantime, i will get some personalized bonuses to hand out to each of you, because i found the characters very good. As stats are handled openly, i hope noone has anything against me not sending the bonuses in individual messages. Also you might note those will be differently proportioned for each character - but later, during the game, i tend to try and even out opportunities to each player, so please bear with me until then.  8)

Posted IC. I'd like to ask each of you to come up with why you are there at The Rider at around 14:00, and where. There are plenty of opportunities, so you can be creative. This is also a possibility for characters to meet but that's not a requirement: simply, if you see someone write something interesting, you can be there to react.
I'd also like to ask you to post two rolls in OOC: a Composure test and a BOD + EDGE (4) test. (The latter is not considered Edge expenditure, so no Rule of Six, unless you also spend Edge, gaining every advantage of it as per a normal test.)
