Title: Shadowrun: A Limited Engagement OOC
Post by: jonathanc on <11-24-12/0259:25>
So, let me begin by saying that I don't do play-by-post very well as a GM. It's hard to keep interest up, especially if someone gets sick or has to delay a post for a while. But I ended my tabletop SR game recently and the PBP game that I was a player in died, so I'm interested in keeping my Shadowrun skills sharp.

My solution is to conduct an experiment: I want to find 4-6 players who are willing to commit to a "limited engagement" - We'll be running On The Run, which is a fairly short adventure. If people get bored or don't like the game after that, no harm and no foul. If we find that everyone clicks, we could move on to something else, like Damage Control or Fistful of Credsticks.

I'd like to keep chargen very simple. SR4A only. I own all of the sourcebooks, and by and large none of them are terribly unbalancing, but frankly the NPCs in these adventures were not designed with FFBA armor stacking in mind, and I'd like to give this adventure a shot in the way that it was originally intended. Also, keeping it to the base book makes it easier for people who may be cranking a character out by hand, rather than using Chummer (since you can't run Chummer on a mac or Linux). Which reminds me: please do not send me Chummer files. When the time comes, just post your sheet in some spoiler tags.

For character selection, since I know new games tend to get snapped up pretty quickly, here's how we'll do it: DO NOT SEND A SHEET. At least, not at first. Instead, just reply in this thread with the following info:

Once I've picked the 4-6 members of the team, you can post your sheet. Everyone will start with a Loyalty 1 / Connection 3 contact named "Smiley".
Title: Beginners luck
Post by: irisheathen on <11-24-12/1253:43>
I've never played PBP before and only play SR once so everything's really new for me. I think I have come up with a interesting character concept though.
Street Name: Patches
Physical: 5'8" and human he's fairly bland to look at with the exception of his 3 day stubble and hard grimace. He usually wears a flannel shirt with the sleeves rolled up, older cowboy boots, and jeans. His hair was a solid brown but has started to get whispers of gray hair at the temples and fine wrinkles around his eyes.
Street info: Patches can drive, oh, and he could stitch shut a bullet wound while doing it. He's a rigger fairly new to the area with some small jobs under his belt. Some of the guys he's worked with though says he hesitates when he has to pull the trigger though. Hesitation can get you killed which is why he's having a harder time getting jobs. Rumor is there's a Corp. (haven't decided which one) who's got beef with him for something.
Skill set: medic and rigger

If you need anything else I am trying to build him but I'm still a little slow at this.

Patches sounds pretty interesting. I kind of picture him like Bond from Skyfall (http://cdn02.cdn.justjared.com/wp-content/uploads/headlines/2012/05/daniel-craig-skyfall-offiical-teaser-trailer-watch-now.jpg).

I'd be interested in joining, but the only  character sheet I have built ATM is for a face/smuggler which may have quite an overlap with the previous poster.  I'll put her details down anyway, but would be happy to try something else (street Sam maybe?) if going vehicle heavy would be a problem!

Street Name:  Emily 'Lynx' Harris
Appearance: One of the best ways to not get caught is to be inconspicuous.  Lynx is an unremarkable looking human female, with no visible cyberware.  Shoulder length brown hair and green eyes, with average height and average build.  Her dress depends on the situation.
Street Notes: Lynx much prefers to talk or stealth her shipments past guards but can also speed or shoot her way out if the job goes bad.
Role: Face/wheelman/rigger

Current sheet was built using some stuff from other books do will need some tweaking...

I've got two guys I'd be willing to play:

Street Name: NOS, better known as Junkie
Appearance: He's squat for a human but bulky, Dressed in a Bike racing leathers. He has blue eyes, red hair and an obvious cybereye.
Street Notes: Nos is the child of a prodigious corporate family who's decided to go a different direction, cut off from his parts considerable funds. What Nos craves above all other is adrenaline the thrill he gets on a run.
Role: B&E / Street Sam

Street Name: Tex
Appearance: Ork dressed in a duster, and wide brimmed hat, strapped to his waist are twin six shooters.
Street Note: Tex is an ex Lone Star Beat Cop that was retried after a bad shootout, he works the shadows in to pay the bills.
Role: Demolitions
Title: Re: [Recruitment] Shadowrun: A Limited Engagement
Post by: Novocrane on <11-25-12/1842:26>
Street Name: Tian Lu
Physical Description: A relatively tall chinese orc, with a long single braid, and a slightly sour expression. Extensive cyberware makes up a decent portion of his body,
Street Bio: Tian Lu has a reputation as something of a techno-fetishist, easily living up to the reputation of the creature that his street name comes from - . While his triad past has been the topic of quiet rumour, both he and the Sapphire Crane Society are being tight-lipped on exactly how he transitioned into 'running the shadows.
Skillset/specialties: Depending on optional / house rules in effect (if any) & any starting info, I'd like to either go for heavy fire support or infil / hacking as specialities.

Alright, that's four applications by my count, and all of them seem interesting enough. Let's get the ball rolling.

First, if anyone is new to the rules/needs help cranking up some stats, please let me know and I will do what I can.

user-unknown: Lynx seems fine to me, and I have no problem with the team doubling up on roles if that's what you guys want to do. If you'd prefer to stat Lynx up as a street sam or whatever, that's fine as well.

SeriousOne338: Did you want me to pick which character? They both seem fine to me, though I'm not sure the job described in "On The Run" would appeal to an adrenaline junkie (it's basically a "fetch me this disc" kind of job to start with).

Novocrane: There are no optional rules in effect. As I mentioned in the first post, the only restriction is that our character builds will be core rulebook only, no sourcebooks. I'm doing this because I'll be running you all through On The Run, the first adventure book written for SR4, which came out before the sourcebooks.

Starting Info: Everyone will receive a free contact: A fixer named Smiley. I'll leave it for the players to decide how well you all know each other.

Made her initially using several other books, but I'm fairly sure that all disallowed stuff is now gone :)  I'm still a pretty new player, so if there are any obvious mistakes or anything on there which you don't want/aren't sure about then let me know.  I also still have somewhere in the region of 7000¥ left to spend, but an currently drawing a blank on what to do with it...

My current feeling is that Lynx probably wouldn't know or have worked with any of the other runners personally, but may have heard of them if they've made a reputation for themsleves (good or bad).  Or maybe they bought something from her some time?  Probably wouldn't normally get involved with actually going on runs, but there's been a lack of smuggling work recently so she is diversifying ;)

EDIT: Also, since I came in after Patches, I'll update this once his is done to make sure I am not clashing too much as I don't want to get in the way :)

So I'm still in the midst of putting patches together and I posted what I have of him on the Character creation and critique forum. I'll take all the help I can get.

I hope to have him done by tomorrow.

Hopefully, this game will give me the chance to actually begin a run this time. Heck, I applied for some of the same games as Joathanc here. So here's a character (and yes, he's a bit of a stereotype with obvious movie references, but I thought it'd be fun to portray a character inspired by some legendary movie figures):

Street Name: Harry "Maverick" Westwood

Physical Description: Westwood's weathered face was about as dour as his personality, his eyes flat and mostly unreadable. His wiry frame sheathed in a long coal black duster, he kept his straight brown hair short and wore polarized glasses at all times. When he's expecting trouble, which is to say whenever he's awake, he also usually wears an armor jacket over his crumpled, dirty white shirt.

Street Bio: Maverick has always been somewhat gruff and some would say he has the creativity and humor of a rock, but he never really cared. Even his street name was not particularly inspired, but he simply failed to care. He was not hiring himself out as a nanny or a party animal: he was good at finding stuff (and people) and shooting people (and stuff). Although he couldn't beat a full mage in the voodoo department and wouldn't have bet on his survival chances if he got in a scrap with a heavily cybered street sam, he could walk a fine line between the two. He could shadow a mark, pick off clues on a discarded item, and place a bullet between the eyes of the thugs hired to throw him off.

Skillset / specialties Perception/Assensing and Gunslinging Adept.

We still don't have a hacker or mage.... I understand the lack of a mage but wont we need a hacker?

Hey jonathanc, is there still room for more?

Lacking some magic support, so how about this character:

Street Name: McClane
Physical Description: Average looking human with short dark receding hair, he's your average joe. A thick neck make him look stronger than he really is as he would win no athletic competition.
Street Bio: McClane is seen by a lot as a down his luck mage with a dark penchant for drugs and alcohol. But he's cunning and  willing to take on any job. Some say he's made a pact with the Devil but magic is too valuable of an asset in the street to stop at such little details.
Skillset/specialties: Magical support

First draft character sheet, so opinions are welcome.
I figure that while personal info is hard to come by, the regular contacts know him / know of him. Not that his reputation is exactly sterling; drugs and augmentation addiction tends to top the conversation, even if he is good at what he does.

Title: Re: [Recruitment] Shadowrun: A Limited Engagement
Post by: Ethan on <11-27-12/1329:37>
Street Name: Hitch
Physical Description: He looks young for his age, human (looking), and has a ghost of a smile always on his face. Grey eyes, dark brown hair, and stands 5' 10" with a light, wiry build. Would be lost in a crowd were it not for his fashionable clothing.
Street Bio: Datathief. Ask anyone who's heard of him and that's the first thing they'll say. He's not the stay-at-home-hacker, he knows how to handle a gun and how not to get noticed. There are rumours he's a Technomancer, he rarely works with a rigger or another matrix specialist to confirm. Most don't think so, he's just good at breaking in and taking stuff.
Skillset: Shotguns, stealth, and stealing.

[spoiler]Name: Ryan Haddix
Alias: Patches

Sex: Male

Lifestyle: Middle (2 months)

Physical Description: 5'8", 140lbs, Caucasian, brown hair tinged with gray, brown eyes, usually found wearing cowboy boots, flannel shirts, jeans, and a large red belt buckle in the shape of a first aid cross.
Personality/background Ex Doc Wagon High Threat Response Team Lead. James saved the life of a young shadow runner while still on a AAA Mega corps lawn (kid was technically HANGING on their side of the fence.) The kid did him a solid though and with the help of his team saved him from the mega corp. and broke James out of the pen only an hour after his arrest. Bad news is James had to watch the entire team die weeks after they saved him. So after he lost his job, wife, and first team in a matter of a month James now attempts to eek out a living in the shadows as a runner. His experiences and training have made him an excellent rigger able to drive or fly just about anything while also patching up his coworkers. They have also scarred him deeply ingraining in him a pacifistic streak and leaving him with a drinking problem.

I do have other stuff that goes with this that I just realized wasn't on here like two fake SINs and a few other tiny things. I still have almost $3000 so any suggestions are welcome.

One thing that pops out; you can't go beyond rating 6 at chargen. (tranq patches)

Also, all your software costs are based on the rating 1-3 prices, not the rating 4-6 prices. (ie; common use software is [rating * 50] for rating 1-3, but [rating * 100] for rating 4-6.

Which gives
Code: [Select]
Command 600¥ Rating 6
Analyze 400¥ Rating 4
Browse 400¥ Rating 4
Edit 400¥ Rating 4
Rating 6 Pilot programs are Av: 18, too. (Av: Rating * 3) Which means you aren't getting it at chargen through core only. You may want to check the rest of your gear availability, too.

On essence and 'ware, I recommend taking some bioware when you're packing serious cyberware, as the totals are calculated seperately & the lower of cyber or bio essence costs is halved.

I'll wait for jonathanc to confirm if I can be in the game before I post my character.
If in, I will gladly do some portraits for the PC.

Irisheathen, your character looks good though just like Novocrane mentioned check the availability of your gear I believe some are higher than the 12 limit per Core book. (check the earbuds for instance).

Quick question for jonathanc:
Are hacked programs allowed at chargen?
Title: Re: [Recruitment] Shadowrun: A Limited Engagement
Post by: DiscoDwarf on <11-28-12/0150:35>
irisheathen, after entering your character into Chummer to make sure I didn't miss anything, here are my comments and suggestions. I'll begin by a break down of the things which are amiss, whether because of the availability or because the price is off.

General gear
First, as it has been mentionned, check your availabilities: your Earbuds and your Tranq. patches are both over 12 (remember that audio and visual enhancers stack the avail. of all their components).
On a side note, you've noted your subvocal mic as "rating 3"; subvocal mic doesn't have a rating, you are confusing it with a transceiver (which does not require a commlink and matrix connection to work).

Matrix gear
Regarding your programs, as Novocrane pointed it out, you didn't take into account the upper-tier price change. Good news though is that you're saving on Encrypt and Scan: you paid the as Hacking program, but they are Common Use. Here's the breakdown:

Command (6)   600¥
Analyze (4)   600*¥
Browse (4)   *¥
Edit (4)           *¥
*I'm presuming you bought the Pro User Suite for 600 and switched the Command program for a better one.

Encrypt (6)  600¥
Spoof (6)       6000¥
Scan (6)       600¥
ECCM (6)    6000¥
Sniffer (6)       6000¥
Track (6)       6000¥

The Pilot has two problems: first, you didn't specify to which vehicle it was tied to; the second, as Novo pointed out, you are capped at a rating of 4 at chargen.

Autosofts and vehicles
In your gear you've noted four autosofts, but didn't mention to which vehicle they were tied. Different vehicles/drones require different versions of the "same" program.
This brings us to the Stormcloud and Fly-Spy. Both have been noted as having received all the autosofts mentioned, but the price don't add up. Also note that the Stormcloud comes with Clearsight (3), so shelling 4000 for that +1 on perception might be a bit pricey.

Cyberware
The Essence and nuyen cost for your eyes (presuming that they are the minimum (2) rating for the mods you want) are both off. Since Image Link and Eye Recording Unit are free and you only pay essence for the the cybereyes system, your eyes with the 4 additional mods (low, thermo, flare and smart) should cost 0.3 Essence and 4500¥, with no capacity left.
Your character now has 0.9 Essence left. Hey, he might actually have human emotions after all!

Weapons and armor
Although you've bought the spare clips and stick-n-shock ammo, you left out the weapons and armor your character is using, as well as the weapon mounted on your van.

Contacts
You also left that part out. At this point, without the guns and armor, you'd have 14 BP and 115¥ left.

Now, onto the  Comments and suggestions
Your character has some solid grounds. He's a paramedic trained to go into dangerous situations and it shows, however, there are a few things amiss:

Overtrained medic
As a paramedic, Patches' job was to administer First Aid and insure the patient survived until he got to the doc. As such, having points in Medicine and Cybertechnology seems a bit off. While some background knowledge might be appropriate, one wonders where he learned to implant 'wares and oversee long-term care.

Missing training
A paramedic should know how to restrain someone if need be; heck, with Doc wagon, you might be required to pick up your patient against his will, without hurting him/her. Having a point or two in Unarmed Combat, with a Subdual specialty, might be very appropriate; consider getting shock gloves too.

Who's shooting?
Since the core SR4A doesn't make distinction between weapon mounts, it can be assumed the one on your van be controlled through the Rigger Adaptation. Which brings the point that you should probably invest in the Gunnery skill, or a good Targeting program.

Dodging traffic jams
Area Knowledge and Navigation can be pretty handy when you need to get around town without having to rely on the GridLink. Of course, decent Pilot, Maneuver and Mapsoft programs can also do the job if you feel like letting the car drive itself.

Tweaking the link
Your commlink is impressive, but it still has only Response (4), limiting your System, and thus all your programs, to 4 as well. Some tweaking might be needed. Also, since you are not a "real" rigger that pretty much lives in his car and controls an army of drone minions, you might consider saving some cred by cutting back a bit on the expensive programs, especially ECCM which is overrated beyond rating 3 (giving you a signal of 8 for jamming purposes... only milspec could jam you!).

ID please
You have a criminal SIN. That's pretty bad. Having a fake SIN to show instead might be a good idea, with the appropriate licenses and all.

More toys
Plastic restraints for troublesome patients (and nosy security guards), Cyberware scanner to help with diagnosis (and knowing what the street sam is packing) and a respirator or gas mask for those quarantined zones might all be considered for your list of gear.

Well, that's it for now. Off to bed now (ugh 5 hours to go before work.... shouldn't have posted this)

Whoa, looks like a lot more interest after I stopped checking yesterday. I think we may have more than six applicants....I'm going to need to review this stuff when I get home. I've got a long day ahead of me though, so final word may not go out until sometime tomorrow. In the meantime, I'm going to shut down recruitment for the time being. As long as you've piped in here though, you've got a good shot at getting in.

The Gunslinger stands 6 foot tall and some change (1.88m), and like some Old West trid coming to life in full color. He's dressed to the nines, from black-green cowboy boots, black slacks, and a hand tooled leather gun belt complete with custom six shooters. His upper body is covered in a silk button up shirt and a Cross striped vest, all underneath a black duster and mantle set up. On his head he wears a simple wide brimmed black cowboy hat, the only thing that breaks the old west look are wrap around black sunglasses.

== Description ==
Receding dark hair. Average looking. He could use some exercise, but the practice of his art keeps him too busy for it. He's not flamboyant, keeping a low profile and casual attires.
He's often caught talking aloud (though he's probably just conversing with one of his summoned elemental).
His social downfall and lack of success in his business had left him bitter and cynical, only reinforcing his bad habits.

== Background ==
Born in 2032, McClane was a forensic expert with a passion for magic theories. In spite of years of magical studies, his talent however never expressed itself before the apparition of Halley's Comet in 2061. With the appearance of SURGE and earth's extreme makeover with the ring of Fire and other tidal storms, he quite freaked out and kept his new found abilities a secret.

It was in the summer '64 that he managed to summon his first spirit, a few weeks before the crash of '64. The crash brought doom and chaos in his life. His wife, a fellow scientist, died trapped in the matrix, his lab burnt to ground, and he lost his SIN. He had nothing left; he drank heavily and flew away.

He traveled for some time, learning what he could about his art - the only thing that was left in him - then settled in Seattle, hoping for some good opportunities and to restart a new life. Life as a SINless is not without ajustment however and McClane had quite a hard time at the beginning. See, he always tried to do good, but things never went his way. Sometimes the harder he was trying the worst happened! He started to see a parallel between power and chaos.

He couldn't get any official license, and people always seemed to distrust him. He became an unlicensed occult investigator, hoping to help people in poorer neighborhood who couldn't get police or government assistance. Business was slow and all the money was reinvested in becoming a better magician.

It wasn't before another life changing even that McClane turned to the shadows. If he always had a knack at summoning elementals, he learnt the hard way that he was pretty bad at Banishing. When a binding attempt on an earth spirit turned bad, he found out too late that had no talent whatsoever at sending the spirit back to its plane. He stood no chance in the fight. He was left dying, broken, but never saw the Light. Darkness came and Death, with a capital D. He surprisingly felt no fear, no sorrow. Death wasn't here to take him, but to guide him in the Realm of Life. He had found his Mentor Spirit, one he had not expected, the Dark King. The encounter had left him weaker but more aware of the world and its balance.

Since that day, he embraced the Shadows. He understood that darkness only relates to evil in people's misconception of things. He was walking a dark path but one made of secrecy and mysteries, not blood and death. He knew he was a good man and the Dark King was but the keeper of secrets. Life wasn't any easier however. Reputation was everything in the streets, his wasn't pretty. Maybe it was because bad things tended to happen around him or maybe few liked to work with someone with a strong penchant for drinks and drugs. Or maybe because other Magicians were not taking him seriously... who knew. None of his last two teams' partners had made it alive to tell a tale.

Now money was running short, and few of his former contacts would consider talking to him.He had to find a run soon, and for once, finish it.

And just like that, I now need to change my character idea to not be redundant with the mage since Iwas essentially the adept version of an occult investigator...

Also, when was it said we should be posting char sheet? I thought we were to wait until we got approved by the GM. Anyhow, I‘ll sort this out later.

DESCRIPTION: 5'8", 140lbs, Caucasian, bed head brown hair tinged with gray, brown eyes, usually found wearing cowboy boots, flannel shirts, jeans, and a large red belt buckle in the shape of a first aid cross.

BACKGROUND:
[spoiler]He grew up in UCAS territory on the tiny peninsula that extends between the CAS, Sioux, and the Pueblo Corporate council. His dad was an official member and recruiter for Humanis Policlub which makes it a wonder that he walked away without any real prejudices. He ended up joining the “Doc Wagon Team” as a way to escape his old life and it seemed to work for a very long while. He married a nice data director that worked with him and he got a promotion that landed him his own team . When it was discovered that Ryan had a pretty sever disease that slowly deteriorates the muscles their marriage hit hard times. Even with the drugs he was always in a bad mood and even though they both worked for DW their bills started to pile up. After many surgeries and fights they separated. After Ryan was fully healed they tried to rekindle the romance but it never seemed right. Then things really went bad for Ryan when he saved the life of a young shadow runner while still on a AAA Mega corps lawn (kid was technically HANGING on their side of the fence.) The kid repaid the favor though and with the help of his team extracted him from the mega corp. prison only hours after his arrest. As they say though out of the frying pan into the fire and Aztechnology struck back hard. Ryan watched the building the entire team was holed up in explode into an inferno of death just a few months after they saved him. So after he lost his job, wife, and first team in a matter of a months Ryan now attempts to eek out a living in the shadows as a runner. His experiences and training have made him an excellent rigger able to drive or fly just about anything while also patching up his coworkers. They have also scarred him deeply ingraining in him a pacifistic streak and leaving him with a drinking problem.
(He has had a life long fear of water.)

@DiscoDwarf  Sorry Dude, never meant screw your idea.  :-[ Didn't see your post while writing mine.

@irisheathen: Do you want you character to look resemble Craig Daniel like jonathanc mentioned or you have a different vision?
Title: Re: Shadowrun: A Limited Engagement
Post by: DiscoDwarf on <11-29-12/0106:32>
@irisheathen everything seems kosher except the implants / essence. You should have 4.5 essence, and from what you've posted, I think I know the error you've made in Chummer: to add the mods to your cybereyes, do not add them as new cyber. Rather, right-click on the Cybereyes Basic System and choose "Add as plugin" from the contextual menu (note: you can do this with a lot of equipment; I use it to add upgrades and matrix programs to commlinks, so I can then just fold the whole thing and tidy up my gear list).
Also, your armor is cumbersome for your character: with a ballistic rating over your Body x2, you are taking a penalty to your Agility. If you think the tradeoff between more protection against less accuracy is fair though, more power to you

@obidancer: it's ok, don't sweat it. Sorry if I came off as a douche, I was quickly answering emails on my phone while waiting for a tabletop game to start and now that I reread it, I did sound like a whiney little bitch. So yeah, no worries, I'll tweak my guy a bit. He is a lot more versatile and more centered on all things Perception and can be a semi-decent infiltrator too. I'll post the character sheet soon.

Ok after a few tweaks he's as good as I can get him. I fixed the Essence problem and replaced my armor with the urban explorer jumpsuit with Biomonitor; Chemical Protection (rating 2); and Nonconductivity (rating 2). I added a Cyberware scanner to the van and picked up a bunch of new Mapsofts: Mapsoft 6 (Seattle Streets); Mapsoft 6 (Seattle Sewers); Mapsoft 6 (Seattle Corp. Extraterritorial Borders); Mapsoft 6 (Seattle Ghoul Inhabited Areas); Mapsoft 6 (Seattle Gang Territory Boundries). I also picked up Metal Restraints; Key Lock (rating 1); Standard RFID Tags; and Stealth Tags. I'm also gonna hunt down a picture when I have time.
I'll post the final draft if I get the thumbs up from Johnathanc.
Thank you all very much for the help and even if I don't get to play with you I learned quite a bit already

Okay, so our roster looks like this:

Patches (medic/rigger) - irisheathen
Emily "Lynx" Harris (face/wheelman/rigger) - user-unknown
Tex (street sam) - SeriousOne338
Tian Lu (fire support/infiltration) - Novocrane
Harry "Maverick" Westwood (gun adept) - DiscoDwarf
McCain (mage) - obidancer
Hitch (datathief) - Ethan

We have 7, which is one over my initial imit of 6, but that's alright. I thought at first that we'd have 8, in which case I'd just split it into two groups of 4.

I wouldn't be too worried about overlapping occult investigators - adept and mage versions of that concept are different enough, and On The Run is primarily a retrieval run with investigation mixed in, so having more than one investigator should prove useful.

I have a character sheet for everyone except Ethan, and I'm sure he can get that turned in over the weekend. As you've all been so patient, I'm going to go ahead and start up a thread for us (http://forums.shadowrun4.com/index.php?topic=9334.0) to get started, so we can all post ourselves in at a leisurely pace over the weekend.

Ok, great :)  Guess I'll keep my sheet pretty much as it is and spend the remaining £ on clothes.

How would you like us to split things between the IC and the OOC thread?  I am assuming we will keep this one for OOC stuff, or is there going to be a new one?

In any case, roll for starting moneys: High lifestyle starting amount (4d6=16) (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3807108/) =[4,4,3,5] = (16)x500  = 8000£.  Nice.

Keeping the OOC stuff here is fine. Feel free to post any in-game rolls in the IC thread, of course.

Ok, have posted!  First time doing this, so hopefully that is the right style of things :)

I'm not that familiar with Shadowrun lore so not sure if Infinity is a 'known' place in the community?  I am assuming it's a nightclub, and that Lynx will at least know this (or at least work it out with a fairly trivial Data Search roll) ;)

In any case, assuming nothing bizarre happens, she will wander over to the bartender and ask for directions to the Johnson party a few minutes before 9.

Dress is normal clothing because I am a muppet and forgot to buy armored clothing  ::)  She will probably also have a Concealed Holster w/Yamaha Pulsar (loaded), depending on whether such a thing would be legal to bring into the club.  (don't want to cause a scene before the first meeting!)

Currently broadcasting Fake SIN (R4) for 'Juliet Walsh', a Horizon journalist.

Infinity is the sort of "go to" nightclub in Shadowrun, at least during 4th edition. It's technically a chain of nightclubs, with branches in Seattle and other major sprawls. I've got more complete info at home in Seattle 2072, so I can answer any questions you might have about layout and such.

Ok, this came up with a rather bad timing, I'm out of town until Sunday evening, so I might not be able to post my character sheet or do much until then. I have the sheet with me on my phone though, and if that silly computer could finally accept to connect with Bluetooth, I might be able to copy/paste the text version.

Have to go for now, if I can I'll try to sneak in a post by the end of the night.

Are we limiting our gun choices to the core book as well? If so, just a question about the HK 227-X: if I add a Gas Vent 3 for it can I switch between sound suppressor and the gas vent's recoil compensation? Or should I just go with the Smartgun for that?

I just had a fridge logic moment, in realising cyber torsos have a base availability of 12 & can't take customisation at chargen.
... And again when chummer showed me taking out 12k nuyen of customisation made no difference. Any issues with me altering the sheet, now that we've started?

The game I was planing on running fell through, If you were planing to have 2 groups of four It would be great If I could be the 8th

Looking at the characters it looks like 3 combat characters. 2 riggers and a hacker. And a mage. With people splashing in to face infiltration. So what would be ideal is A face/infiltrator mage, but thats pretty much impossible without being a pixie... Oh god. Something a little more reasonable would be an adept infiltrator face.

Well games started but just putting it out there.

Gun choices are also limited to Core. I'm not sure you can add a gas vent and a sound suppressor, since they both go on the barrel.

Sorry it took so long, but I present to y'all Hitch the Face/Hacker wannabe!

[spoiler]
Name: Jude Glenn
Alias: Hitch
Race: Human
Sex: Male
Nationality: UCAS
Lifestyle: Medium
Karma Spent: 0
Physical Description: He looks young for his age, human (looking), and has a ghost of a smile always on his face. Grey eyes, dark brown hair, and stands 5' 10" with a light, wiry build. Would be lost in a crowd were it not for his fashionable clothing.
Personality/background Hitch is confident. Sometimes, it's justified and sometimes it isn't. Born to rare middle-class parents, Jude Glenn managed to graduate from a technical college with hardly any debt. Everything after that has been carefully removed from the Matrix. He enjoys challenges and seems to be enjoying his new career in the shadows. His code is surprisingly light and he spends the majority of his time either testing the software himself or upgrading it. A sheltered life is evident in his compromised health; he is often sick or sniffly or sneezing unless properly medicated.

So, at long last, here is the character sheet for my character. He's mostly good at spotting things and shooting stuff with his pistols, though he isn't going to have many actions per turn so he'll have to make the shots count. His main role in a team would be to spot dangers (mundane and astral) before the team blunders into them, with his combat skills being handy. Using only pistols and shock gloves, and having some decent Stealth skills, he can also be used to get into areas without anyone noticing anything is amiss. Being something of P.I., he can tap communications and knows how to talk the talk to fit in or get some info out of

I'm also attaching a picture I used for reference.
Note: I do not claim any rights or intellectual property over this picture. It is taken from a larger piece titled "Sins of NeonCity", by DeviantArt artist OmeN2501 (http://omen2501.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d1w1agn), whose gallery I strongly encourage everyone to visit.

[spoiler]Name: Henry Westwood
Alias: Maverick
Race: Human
Sex: Male
Nationality: UCAS (Russian heritage)
Lifestyle: Low (2 months)
Karma Spent: 0
Physical Description: Westwood's weathered face was about as dour as his personality, his eyes flat and mostly unreadable. His wiry frame sheathed in a long coal black duster, he kept his straight brown hair short and wore polarized glasses at all times. When he's expecting trouble, which is to say whenever he's awake, he also usually wears an armor jacket over his rumpled, dirty white shirt.
Personality/background Maverick has always been somewhat gruff and some would say he has the creativity and humor of a rock; even his street name was not particularly inspired, but he simply failed to care. He was not hiring himself out as a nanny or a party animal: he was good at finding stuff (and people) and shooting people (and stuff). Although he couldn't beat a full mage in the voodoo department and wouldn't have bet on his survival chances if he got in a scrap with a chromed street sam, he could walk a fine line between the two. He could pick off clues on a discarded item, shadow a mark, and place a bullet between the eyes of the thugs hired to throw him off.

Before you can enter, you are taken through a MAD scanner and wanded as well. Weapons are electronically tagged and held in a secure, individual safe keyed to your SIN (or fake SIN). Weapons are stored unloaded, of course.
Does this include ubiquitous self-defence items like tasers?

Ok so I hate invisible castle but I'm still using it. Since I cant seem to register I wont be able to do some stuff and I don't know how long they will keep the roll info. (I've now tried several different emails, checked spam folders and sent them emails but to no avail.)
Are there any setting options you can fiddle with?

Code: [Select]

I use rolz.org to roll dice.
I've created a room for the Game: go to http://rolz.org/group (http://rolz.org/group) add the name of your character for nickname and "Limited_Engagement" for the room name.

Anyone going to http://rolz.org/myroomlog?r=Limited_Engagement (http://rolz.org/myroomlog?r=Limited_Engagement) can see the log.

Pretty easy, straight forward and no need for registration.

What do you think about it?

Oh nifty.

He's 5' 10", wiry not bulky muscular. Dark brown hair, grey eyes, clean shaven and fashionably longer hair. He dresses well. The only obvious 'ware is a datajack behind his left ear. He's young, early 20s, and carries a machine pistol for self defense and a submachine gun for work.

Also, if you feel like it, he has two drones: a Fly-Spy and a Microskimmer. He uses those to scout around and generally watch his back.

Oh and he's a thief. Datathief, sure. But he's not that picky.
Title: Re: Shadowrun: A Limited Engagement
Post by: irisheathen on <12-07-12/0110:31>
Ok so weird questions. What would I have to roll to try and figure out who of my compatriots is the most charismatic? Also once I figure that out can I just send them a private AR message (like an IM)? Basically Patches knows he's not a face and doesn't wanna step on toes but has questions that might be relevant but also possibly rude to ask.

Examples: Whats the data?(relevance who would they sell it too); Does he/she know what they have?; Can they provide any extra info on why the thief broke in to begin with?; Should we discuss separate fees for "extra copies" that we have to track down?; Whats the expected time frame?; If we do complete the mission within a certain amount of time can we get a bonus?; Who's our employer?; Can we see the scene of the crime?

(Sorry he's got high intelligence so he's super curious.)
Also should we ask questions before trying to negotiate a better rate? Is it rude to ask for a better rate(or bonuses)?

Just so I know for certain we, the runners, have worked together?  ???
Title: Re: Shadowrun: A Limited Engagement
Post by: jonathanc on <12-07-12/1214:12>
I'm leaving it up to you guys whether you know each other. It's possible that you've all worked together before, or that some of you have worked with others. All up to you.

There isn't really a roll you can do to determine who is the most charismatic, but conversation should establish who the best negotiator is. And certainly, if you have questions, it's probably fine to ask them instead of having the negotiator ask.
Title: Re: Shadowrun: A Limited Engagement
Post by: irisheathen on <12-07-12/1408:49>
I'd say that I don't think any of us have worked together but some of us might know of others by reputation or previous interaction (maverick and mclaine).
I also just realized that the Jammer makes the AR message question pointless anyway.

Sorry thought it was a jammer. If anybody wants to have worked with patches lemme know I'm open. I kinda figured he would have done some extraction jobs recently while working with Smiley and had asked to expand his runner options. But he's a pacifist so no wet-works or the like in his past.

In retrospect, playing a Face character in my first PbP game when I'm a terrible RPer anyway was not the best plan :)  We shall see how this goes!

@ jonathanc - I have tried to take into account social modifiers which seemed sensible when doing latest roll. Does that look ok, or would you prefer to do it a different way?  Seemed like none of the others really applied (well, maybe the intoxication one but I don't think either of us have had that much to drink).

Ah, thanks for reminding me! I'd forgotten about your negotiation roll entirely. The Johnson has told you what he can. Feel free to make another negotiation test to angle for more cash; no need for a penalty, roll your full pool (assuming you're the team's elected negotiator, which seems likely).

Title: Re: Shadowrun: A Limited Engagement

Ok, will give it a try.  Hopefully won't mess up the die roll :D

...

negotiation for more money (12d6.hits(5)=2) (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3817809/)

:(

Not really sure if the amount I suggested was suitable for the job anyway, so assuming that fails (which is quite likely) chalk it up to Lynx being new at this sort of work ;)

(Have had some discussion with other players about what I originally had written - have changed slightly  to be less specific about the nature and amount of expenses...)

(Have also been reminded of Edge :)  I think that's how it works?  Looking throught the rules again, it looks like my RL group doesn't do it quite right :))
Title: Re: Shadowrun: A Limited Engagement
Post by: DiscoDwarf on <12-09-12/2005:02>
Yes, you can spend Edge to reroll all the dice that didn't come up as hits, so that's a 10 dice reroll. Also, now that you've spent Edge, any die that comes up as a 6 get to be rerolled too, hopefully to get a second hit off the same die.

2 hits out of 12 dice is a sucky roll, you should have twice that on average, and as the face, this is the kind of roll that we usually really want to succeed.
Title: Re: Shadowrun: A Limited Engagement
Post by: Novocrane on <12-09-12/2015:44>
I don't think the rule-of-six applies to rerolling not-hits. At least, it's not referred to & there's no edge dice involved. Full reroll plus edge gets the rule on the edge dice.
Title: Re: Shadowrun: A Limited Engagement
Post by: DiscoDwarf on <12-09-12/2106:27>
You are right, rule of six applies only if you want to add your Edge to the roll (before or after you roll). My bad.
Title: Re: Shadowrun: A Limited Engagement
Post by: user-unknown on <12-10-12/1407:01>
The part about my table group not doing it right related to exactly that issue - we use exploding dice when rerolling failures and all of them explode...  I checked the book when doing this one to see what it said about the ways to use edge and I think the 'no exploding on failure rerolls' interpretation is correct.  Not sure if our table method is due to our slightly more... cinematic style, or if we just didn't read the rules properly :)

Also, I am beginning to regret taking Bad Luck even though it hasn't actually affected me yet  ;)

So would it be worth it to roll Knowledge: Seattle Celebrities? For some reason I decided that Patches would be addicted to reading those stupid magazines about who's dating who, who's on what drug, or who's having a baby in the Celebrity world. If he's important in the music industry (and  by his dress he might be) then he might count as a celebrity.

Fixed the ork - troll thing. Also I'm new and Patches is new so neither of us realized that calling him by name would be a bad thing. Besides he had a really good roll so Patches was star struck.
Title: Re: Shadowrun: A Limited Engagement
Post by: user-unknown on <12-14-12/1320:50>
 :D

If Patches' flattery doesn't work, I'm not entirely sure where to go from here.  The only real negotiation options I can think of for trying to get us more money would probably end the conversation if I roll badly (and judging my luck so far, this is very likely).  While in a RL game with my friends, I would probably risk it anyway, this seems like it would be somewhat rude here and probably screw up the rest of the game  ;) Also, can you even roll twice for the same activity?

Perfect characters are boring.

@user-unknown: sometimes we win sometimes we lose. I'm sure accepting the job and avoiding getting paid less is the best course of action. Maybe we'll be able to bargain for more after if the job is well done.

Title: Re: Shadowrun: A Limited Engagement
Post by: obidancer on <12-22-12/1327:36>
It would be data search + browse program rating

Also it is very unlikely a contact of loyalty 1 could just be called up and asked for a favor. Loyalty 1is a purely business relationship, they don't owe crap and tolerate you only because you bring them good money or information.

Title: Re: Shadowrun: A Limited Engagement
Post by: irisheathen on <12-23-12/0143:00>
If he doesn't respond that's fine. Or if he responds and says he has info that I'll have to pay for that's also fine. Or if he wants for Patches to "owe him one" that's fine too. But I had kinda pictured their relationship as people who drank in the same bar on a regular basis and talked occasionally. Maybe he likes me plenty as Patches but if told who I really was would arrest me, hence loyalty 1. To pidgin hole all loyalty 1 contacts as " a purely business relationship" is kinda killing them as RP fodder. I was just gonna throw it out there and let the GM decide. :D

Street Name: Mr. Smith
Physical Description: He's an elf that's standing at 6'4" with a slim build weighing at 130 lbs. He has bright baby blue cybereyes that look almost exactly like his original eyes, and sleek black hair that he keeps in a typical business cut. He's usually seen where suits, in the latest style if he's got the cash for it.
Street Bio: Mr. Smith is a fresh face to the Shadows, so nothing is really known about him yet. His fixer does assure that he's got a silver tongue, a professional demeanor, and an oddly high amount of loyalty to his clients. There are rumors that Mr. Smith is a disgraced corp man.
Skillset/specialties: Face

Title: Re: Shadowrun: A Limited Engagement [Recruiting again]

That's gonna take me a little bit. I have to remove non-corebook stuff and then convert it all over to the forum char sheet code. When you say SR4A only, is that everything including things like qualities and advance lifestyle, or do you mean just gear?

As for inserting my character, he used to work for Horizon in the music industry, if that helps (or hurts) at all.

Title: Re: Shadowrun: A Limited Engagement [Recruiting again]
Post by: obidancer on <01-25-13/1536:16>
SR4A for everything... no other books... a bit challenging at first but can still come up with good things.
McClane has run the shadows for some time, and has quite a bad reputation about it (Notoriety 3) mostly because he's known to be bad luck, and rumor has it he's made pact with the Devil. (Untrue, but know ones really know, but has Dark King as a mentor spirit and few understand it). So it shouldn't be too hard for McClane and M.Smith to have work together a couple times.

For anyone else looking to join, we're lacking good hacking skills!
Title: Re: Shadowrun: A Limited Engagement [Recruiting again]
Post by: Aryeonos on <01-25-13/1722:27>
Hacking skills!? I'm a hacker! Though allot of my gear is arsenal and a few things from unwired, though either of those rarely come up if it isn't too much of an issue, otherwise I can buy some cheap gear from the CRB. And I'm a changeling... crap I'll have to make a new character, if there is still space?

If the changeling part isn't a problem I can use my original comlink and just put on an urban explorer.

I don't think I'll need or carry most of my gear so long as I've got my 'link and programs. If that works for ya.

What all do you need?  You mentioned hacker, but is there anything else you are looking for?

When do apps have to be completed by?  And shall we post them here or PM them to you?

If you are still interested, I would be willing to try my hand. I would be willing to make a hacker, though I'd need to brush up on the rules.

We got an Occult Investigator (mage) and ParaMedic Rigger still active, maybe Cyborg Heavy weapon specialist, the rest of the team seem to have deserted us.

@Aryenos: Though your character is cool, I think we should all stick to having to make a good character with SR4A only. It makes it easier and fair for everyone, and simplify thing, in a sense. Of course, it is the GM final decision that matter, but I am just stating my opinion.
Title: Re: Shadowrun: A Limited Engagement [Recruiting again]
Post by: Aryeonos on <01-26-13/0254:00>
If I were to just play it as a hacker none of my changeling qualities would come into play, and I'm open to letting the GM just say that I go with my skills and attributes only for dice pools, (+the program rating of course), the metagenetic qualities are mostly there as character concept/flavor, I didn't make it to min/max, and I'm rather fond of this one. But, if you absolutely need an SR4 only character I can make a new one, if just using SR4 only gear and ignoring the SURGE qualities isn't enough.

If you still have a spot open for someone who is rusty (I'll have to brush up on the 4ed rules) PM me.

I generally run a Sammie, but I am flexible. Just PM me and I'll get a character set up (looks like you had a few responses before me, so not sure how many spots you have open)

Well, I generally play hackers, so I can definitely go that route.  But I can also play a sammie if needed.

I'll create a character sometime today and get him up here for your review.

Finished up a technomancer character. Just a couple minor tweaks, but overall done I believe. Just need to copy it over into forum code, then I will PM it to you.

Name - "Glitch"
Description - Standing at 5' 10" and maybe 125lbs, Glitch is not a terribly imposing figure. Dark shaggy hair sits in an unkempt mess on his head, and his face seems to be stuck on "5 o'clock shadow". It's obvious his skills do not include taking a hit, and he knows it. But his skills as a hacker are getting him noticed, and paid.

Bio - Glitch was an average teenager when Crash2.0 fragged his "normal" life. After waking up in a hospital several days later, something felt, off. He could sense something different around him, something almost comforting once he got used to it.
As he began realizing what he could do, he did what any self-respecting teenager would do with new-found power; he abused the crap out of it. After a stint in prison for "malicious hacking" (he never bothered to correct the paperwork on that point), he got better at hiding his trail. He took on some basic hacking jobs for the local gang, helping pay rent and his security bill at the same time. He is more than a little paranoid about being found out as a Technomancer, and learned early on to carry a 'link with him, just in case.

Hello everyone. Glad to see such a strong response.

It looks like we've got 4 people interested in applying, and after adding in Necrogigas the game has 3 players. That would put us at 7 when I'd originally wanted a maximum of 6, but I'm willing to bend a little on that, just in case life gets in the way for someone (which is how we ended up in this mess in the first place).

I'm going to remain firm on the "core rulebook only" thing, because I made everyone else adhere to that rule, and because we're playing through On The Run, an adventure that was created specifically for core rulebook characters).

[spoiler=Mr. Smith Character Sheet]

Name: Malcolm Reed
Alias: Mr. Smith
Race: Elf
Sex: Male
Nationality: P.C.C.
Lifestyle: Middle (and Low Safehouse)
Karma Spent: 0

Physical Description: Malcolm Reed stands at a tall 6'4" with a slim build weighing at 130 lbs. He has bright baby blue cybereyes that look almost exactly like his real eyes did, and sleek black hair that he keeps in a typical business cut. He's usually seen dressed in bushiness suits, the latest styles if possible.

Personality: Reed  has an amiable and outgoing personality. Behind this outward persona lies a vain and materialistic man, a product of his upbringing. He is quick to smile and quicker to make friends, but will not hesitate to retaliate against those that break faith with him. In matters of business, Reed is the consummate professional. While a stern negotiator, Reed does have a sense of ethics. He is loath to use strong arm or dirty tactics to gain advantage, preferring to use his skills alone to come out ahead in business dealings. He deals as honestly with all his clients as is prudent and possible, usually deeming the possibility of souring relations and the chances of reprisal not worth the risk.  As a matter of professional pride, he remains faithful to any contract once it has been made, with extremely few exceptions. Despite both his personal vanity and professional detachment, lies a deeply hidden moralistic core. Despite his personal shortcomings, Reed still knows right from wrong, and cannot stand to see innocents come to harm or bystanders suffer for his deeds. Horizon’s corporate line has always been about helping all of metahumantiy, and Reed always bought into the corporate line.

Background Malcolm Reed did not start his life in the shadows.  In fact his life began in the light, and he burned brightly.  Reed was born on August 19th in Los Angeles, the son of musician Leon Reed, and music producer Julia née Weber. Reed grew up privileged, and enjoyed every moment of the highlife. Reed attended UCLA, majoring in Entertainment Law, and minoring in Musical Studies. Reed began working for Horizon following college, and from the start began making a meteoric rise in the megacorp.  Within two year he’d made a reputation for himself, up and down the West Coast, as a peerless contract negotiator and manager for musical talent.  His success made him overconfident and reckless. He received information that a rising singer, one that Horizon was tempting to woo, was in the final processes of signing on with a Saeder-Krupp subsidiary.  If he sent it up the chain, it would be too late, so he decided to act on his own.  He used his discretionary funds to hire a runner team to sabotage the negotiations.  Unfortunately the job went south; the team applied the term sabotage far too liberally and the singer, along with several S-K personnel, ended up dead.  Worse yet Saeder-Krupp was somehow able to trace the team back to Horizon, and retaliated with an extraction of a high grossing Horizon singer.  Horizon’s internal investigation led back to him, and they confiscated all of his monetary assets as restitution for the company’s losses. He was promptly fired and black listed.

Fortunately Reed had a large amount of money stashed away in tax shelters. He used these funds to move to Seattle a few months after being thrown out of the company. Reed lost most of his contacts after being fired by Horizon and those that he didn’t lose all resided in Seattle. This played no small part in his decision to relocate to the Rainy City. When you’re down out, you may have to turn to those still willing to talk to you. The transition to unemployment was rough for Reed. His funds allowed him a modest living arrangement, but all Reed saw was his fall from wealth. Reed didn’t really know what to do about his situation, after what happened at Horizon, no corporation would take such a huge risk as hiring him. He was drowning his woes at The Crossroads (see Club Owner/Fixer) one night when Keyes mentioned to him that there were other ways to utilize his skills, and they don’t ask for a resume or references. The idea of him, a (former) corporate man, becoming a shadowrunner was so ludicrous to Reed it made him laugh. Keyes advised him not to dismiss his suggestion so easily, and to give it some thought. Reed eventually decided to join the Seattle shadows, seeing no real alternatives. He had Keyes supply him with some tools of the trade and put him in contact with a team. He choose the alias Mr. Smith, thinking it was sort of odd that corporate reps used the alias Johnson, the second most common Anglo surname, for anonymity over the most common; Smith.

Contacts
ContactC/L
Novacoke Dealer1/1
Martin “Marty” Donley, Orc Male, 25, is a small time independent coke dealer operating out of The Crossroads (see Club Owner/Fixer). He dips into his supply frequently, hampering his profits and ability to improve his reputation on the drug scene. His product is heavily cut, but it still gets the job done, barely. Reed would prefer higher quality coke, but he never bothered to develop better drug contacts in Seattle before his relocation. Donley is a generally likable guy, if slightly annoying in his earnestness to be so.

Pimp2/1
Dwight “2Fresh” Jones, Human Male, 27, is a pimp operating just inside the Redmond Barrens, far enough in to ward off the authorities, but close enough to the border not to scare off johns from wealthier districts. Reed and 2Fresh’s relationship is strictly businessman to “businessman,” not client to service provider. Reed only ever went to 2Fresh when a client of Reed’s wanted to slum it in the Barrens with street walkers for the thrills. In truth Reed detests 2Fresh, not out of any moral objection to the act of prostitution, but because the “contract” between pimps and prostitutes is grossly imbalanced in pimps’ favor. Reed does admit though that 2Fresh treats his women better than most pimps. Better, of course, being a relative term. 2Fresh is a typical thug, and plays into the stylized media image of pimps.

Bodyguard2/1
Miranda Cruz (Runner Alias: Daisy), Troll Female, 28, is a tough as nails protection specialist, working for the Desert Storm security firm, that takes her job very seriously. Much like Reed himself, Cruz handles her job with the upmost professionalism and unwavering commitment. Cruz moonlights as a shadowrunner from time to time when money’s tight. Her experience in the shadows is a big reason why Reed would hire her for protection details when he and his clients had business in Seattle. Cruz has a stern and ridged personality, and is also succinct with her words.

Drone Rigger2/1
Alfred Michaels (Runner Alias: Techno-babble), Elf Male, 26, is a drone rigger specializing in overwatch security. Michaels is a coworker of Cruz’s.  If Reed felt the need to hire Cruz, he’d usually hire Michaels as well. He has a considerably less professional manner than Cruz, but is good at his job and his understanding of the shadows is a bonus. Unlike Cruz, Michaels takes shadow work for the thrills, not the money. Michaels possess a sarcastic demeanor, and acerbic wit.

Journalist3/1
Dalia Mitchells, Human Female, 24, is a journalist for KSAF. For her, journalism isn’t about exposing shady corporate dealings or uncovering government corruption, it’s about making money and media is big money. Reed would bribe Mitchells with exclusives with his clients in exchange for positive reviews. Though focused on the multimedia scene, Mitchells, through her colleagues, has access to a broad base of contacts and informants. Mitchells has a sly and charming demeanor, always attempting to weasel more and more out of her contacts.

Lawyer3/1
Lewis St. Peter, Dwarf Male, 39, is a high end criminal defense lawyer. In the rare instances that one of his clients got into legal troubles in Seattle, Reed would call on St. Peter to handle things rather than call up Horizon’s legal department to do the same. St. George was paid generously, if the matter was handled quickly and discreetly, and Reed didn’t have to fill out a mountain of paperwork for Legal. St. Peter is the no nonsense type, if he’s talking to you then it’s about business.

Fixer/Club Owner3/2
Norman Keyes, Human Male, 36, is the proprietor, and head barkeep, of The Crossroads, a nightclub on the boarder of Auburn and Puyallup. Reed used to book gigs at The Crossroads for his rocker and hard edge clients. Keyes sees a good amount of legitimate business and a lot the illegitimate kind. Fixers, runners, gangers, drug and arms dealers are all frequent patrons of The Crossroads. If you need something, be it gear or info, Keyes probably knows someone that has it or can get it. Keyes is the one that introduced Reed to the Seattle shadows. Keyes wears an eye patch over the hole that used to be his left eye; he refuses to talk about how he lost it or why he hasn’t replaced it with a cybereye. Keyes is a friendly man, at least friendly for a man that uses his club as a haven for all manner of illegal activities, but has a very dark sense of humor.

Money Launderer4/2
Alexei Kovalevsky, Human Male, 48, is a Vory accountant and money launderer. Reed has long used Kovalevsky, mostly for his distance from L.A., to hide his money in tax shelters, and will be calling upon his services in the future to clean the money made on runs, and provide fake employment records. Kovalevsky is highly astute and does not suffer fools. If crossed by someone, he won’t do them the kindness of killing them. He’ll shred their entire lives apart by ruining them financially.

I was starting to create a character for this, and I realized this is On The Run.  Which I happen to be running IRL.  Doing that has given me inside knowledge of what's going on with the game, and although I try not to meta-game, sometimes it does happen.

For that reason, I am going to not submit a character for this unless the GM does not find enough replacement players.

Hey there! I don't know if you'd want me (I've never played before ever and am unfamiliar with how to do character sheeting on the forum) but I'd enjoy playing if you have any room so that I could start learning for when my group starts at the table top eventually. I think a core only campaign would be perfect for learning the ropes (and I promise I'm an experienced role player, just not SR) if you have open space :)

What's your deadline on new character sheets? I whipped this one up rather quick based off of a concept I've been toying with for a lil' bit. He's a security analyst, a rather sociable one at that. If we start getting into the other books I'll break out my main character, but I'm rather happy with this one, and it's all SR4A.

Eventually Gary worked up enough money doing freelance IT work to put himself through technical college to become a Matrix Security Analyst.

Gary has a shock of wild orange hair, and likes to paint his jutting oryx like horns with neon body paint, in either of his ears he has a myriad of silicon piercing in an array of colours. Wild contacts in a cyan colour, bulky retro wireless headphones ringed with lights and large antenna, and broad shades with a yellow and black checkered pattern across them.

Will this be a continuation of an already open thread, or will there be a new thread started?

I could bring my sammy.... But restricted gear and the cavalier deputies aren't in the SR4A.

If we need a sammy, I can make one real fast, and keep the manipulator on ice for now.

Gary Franglejack wasn't your average troll, he didn't do manual labour, he never "Ran with the gang". Gary loved computers, the Matrix and all the broad reaches of the world it could take him to.

This one looks good to me. I like to think that any Shadowrun scenario (particularly this one) is theoretically do-able by any combination of archetypes, so I don't see any issues with having more than one techie type.

Okay, I can make a more mobile or combat capable hacker if the group needs it either way. Just let me know what to do, this'll be the first time I've played shadowrun through play by post.

Reiper, with our Cyber Ork gone we're pretty weak on the fighting side while your manipulator is very close in skills to my mage. I'd vote for you doing the Sammy if you don't mind any. Understand that if you prefer to play the Shaman, I am fine wit that, it is just a suggestion for the completeness of the team.

If you need to get ahold of me, I'd be in the paper(Matrix listings or whatever) under "Freelance security analyst, I'll break it and tell you how to fix it! No system is too safe until I've had a crack at it, and told you so!"

She joined the Marines right out of school, serving the UCAS with honors. She was dishonorable discharged after 9 years for going in a rage and breaking her platoon sergent's arm in four places when heh almost got her killed by his orders.

After being released, she worked for Knight Errant as a security officer briefly. She turned in her boss for embezzling funds, resulting in him being fired. She was also fired because he also made it look as if she was a part of the embezzlment as well. Her old boss has harassed her ever since.

So who do we have before I get confused:

Reiper - Nemesis - Ork Sammy
Aryeonos - Freakazoid - Troll Adept Hacker
Necrogigas - Mr. Smith - Negociator
Khotanos - Glitch - Technomencer

Am I missing anyone?

That's an affirmative on Nemesis.

Should I be making an IC narrative post of my character at home? Or am I just waiting for the GM to intro me?

Is the game active now or are we waiting for a new thread or continuing on the existing one?

Just wondering.

K, we starting from the beginning or where it got left off by the previous group?

Basically are we all meeting the Johnson at Infinity?
Title: Re: Shadowrun: A Limited Engagement [Recruiting again]
Post by: obidancer on <01-30-13/1231:00>
I believe, just like Mr. Smith, you'll be joining the game as it progresses. The Infinity Event is past already. McClane and Patches, maybe Tian Li (haven't heard from player) are already on the move.
Our GM will have a better answer to that.

At this point I think it is best that the runners know each other, it will make it easier to integrate everyone. Glitch is at the Warehouse already, it is best either Patches or McClane recognize him, and ask for his assistance. They don't have to know he is a Technomancer.

Mr. Smith is already hired and on his way. Freakazoid can be contacted and hired before they find out that Glitch is here. And Nemesis can/should too be an acquaintance, and will be asked to help. Maybe she's part of the security already?

For Nemesis and Freakazoid, what do you both think of starting out as "hired help" to keep the crowds at the Nabo show under control?
Title: Re: Shadowrun: A Limited Engagement [Recruiting again]
Post by: Aryeonos on <01-30-13/1449:15>
Sure, I could be doing any number of IT things there, or matrix overwatch looking for people trying to sneak in with their links on silent. Basically spider work.

That and I can "persuade" the scalpers to take off if security needs it.

Alright, will set up as hired help.

I don't have my information on my laptop at work, so I'll start posting IC tomorrow, will also give me a chance to work with the online dice roller to get the hang of it.

I'm thinking that you were already hired by the venue to keep an eye out (they were running out of gang members), and you'd meet the team that way (perhaps they could bribe you guys to help them, haha)

That would have worked too, but someone already linked me with the invite. Nem needs money so she doesn't care what the job entails right now. (rent is due at the end of the month).

So she's already in the parkinglot, about to see what she can see while she waits.

Title: Re: Shadowrun: A Limited Engagement [Recruiting again]
Post by: Aryeonos on <02-01-13/0029:11>
Okay, I'm trying to think of motive to be there, only thing that's cropping up is spying on the crowd and intercepting potential traffic towards the warehouse node, and keeping an eye out for hidden 'links. I guess I'll just jump into that, if it needs to be retconned I can do that.
Title: Re: Shadowrun: A Limited Engagement [Recruiting again]
Post by: Reiper on <02-01-13/0205:39>
btw if you guys need, and the GM approves (its up to him on if this is allowed) I can RetCon Nem as a bouncer in the back.

She's broke, she needs the cash the club is paying her, but she may be able to help out if bribed.

But since I'd be inserting her into the club itself already, I see that as a tad shady starting off.

Post by: obidancer on <02-01-13/0258:56>
I post the little interaction between McClane and Smiley to move things along a bit to get the new team together. I was counting on Nemesis already working as the security. So upon receiving the message she'd be there already. The job is certainly better paid than the few hours of watching over drunk gang members and crazy groupies.
Mr Smith is in already. Upon recognizing Glitch as a possible hacker, he's willing to give the young man a chance for a run, not knowing it may not be the Technomancer's first job in the shadows.
That leave us with getting Freakazoid. I think a spider would simply have control of some cameras and maybe drones to watch over the crowd, as well as be in contact with all Security members to direct them toward potential trouble.

Glitch will have to prove himself before he gets McClane's trust, so maybe Nemesis knows Freakazoid and his lack of loyalty toward the concert organizers, and offers to use him too for the run. That way the team is done, there will be some acquaintance between team members, and we're ready to move forward and we may get an small advantage to get in anyway with both Nemesis and Freakazoid part of the security team.

So that everyone is on the same page: the plan so far is to get in, and a) find and retrieve email from Nabo's commlink, b) if we can get near Nabo, have him reveal what he knows about the originator and possibly how to get to the Disk. We'll have better chances going in from the backstage entrance, avoiding the main crowd, and having easier access to Nabo and his stuffs.
How we get in is yet to be defined. Groupies seem to be allowed access in but we're limited in attractive female ork, tickets are way too expensive, and muscling our way him might not be wise with all those gangers around. So far, coning our way in seems the first choice of action. Nemesis can convince other security we're ok to be in, or McClane can have anyone looking like a pretty groupie with his Physical Mask spell.

@Reiper: Cool. It's McClane by the way... :)

@Aryeonos: a couple questions regarding your character: How do you get 16 dice in spoofing? how do you get 4 IP in matrix?
Title: Re: Shadowrun: A Limited Engagement [Recruiting again]
Post by: Aryeonos on <02-01-13/0327:13>
I accidently added my attribute rating to my dice pool when I was reading off of chummer, I get 4 IP because I'm hacking in AR and have 4 IP from improved Reflexes 3.
Title: Re: Shadowrun: A Limited Engagement [Recruiting again]
Post by: obidancer on <02-01-13/0331:29>
Improved reflexes is like wired reflexed, it improves your meat IP, not matrix. I believe only a modified 'link will give you an extra IP in matrix, Technomancers not withstanding.

And your programs are limited to commlink response, which is 5 max at character creation (because of availability). Finally, eventhough you can have Improve Skill (hacking) 4, only a bonus of 2 is applied to your skill if you have it at Rating 4 (max mod is 1.5 skill rating, 6 in your case)
Title: Re: Shadowrun: A Limited Engagement [Recruiting again]
Post by: Aryeonos on <02-01-13/0348:21>
I only have improved hacking and data search at 2, there were some goofups in the character sheet I submitted that I didn't even spot till today. And I thought, that initiative passes were the same if you're in AR, I mean, if I put my icon into someone elses node I get that, but all I'm doing is running commands on my link. And as far as I see System and Firewall don't have an availability, until they hit 7 but that's not core rulebook, I can only upgrade +2 from my starting stats, which my starting system is 4, so I put it up to 6, my firewall is 3 which I upgraded to 5.

But if you have page numbers or what have you I'll give it a look to make sure I'm not breaking any rules.

There is also a drone in the back of my van. Not sure how much info you get from the search but its a Renraku Stormcloud. Also I'm assuming you pick up anything running in hidden? I'll be posting later tonight if I get the chance I've been really busy the last day or so. Sorry.

I won't know what most anything is until I make a matrix perception test, but I've already met the threshold for detecting any nodes within my signal range. I can't access anything unless we're in mutual signal range though.

It's up to Jonathan on what's in the area though so I still don't know.
Title: Re: Shadowrun: A Limited Engagement OOC
Post by: jonathanc on <02-06-13/0146:11>
There are literally thousands of nodes in the immediate area. Nearly everyone at the concert has some kind of commlink, and as civilians, few if any are attempting to operate in hidden mode. There's also a lot of advertising in the AR around here, which is unusual for the Barrens. Probably some viral marketing thing aimed at Nabo's primary demographic. Scanning through the ones you can find, you don't see any that pop out as obvious candidates for Nabo's link. Could be he's indoors, and thus out of signal range (wireless blocking paint is cheap, and a common measure to prevent piracy/bootlegging of concert footage), or the commlink is off.

Quick question Jonathan,

When nem is inside, and backstage, if I'm trying to be inconspicuous while looking for something that I'm not supposed to be looking for, or poking around what do you want me to roll? And will I get any bonus for being security +2 or something?

I'm not much help atm, I've avoided the matrix most of my SR gaming life due to how much it would slow down the game back in the day of decking when it was almost entirely two different games being played at once.

Still catching up on the 4th ed rules, the matrix will be my last section to catch up on.

As a drone rigger, what you should be doing is dependent on the types of drones you have. I've always found it effective to have a drone up in the air acting as over-watch, and one loaded with weapons ready to provide fire support.

I couldn't find the original thread here on Jackpoint, but this (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1cjBLxzfGFjQZ1K1-MncVrNoaAjIx_BkrwtQq0LXAJpc/mobilebasic?pli=) is the guide I most often use, the other bit is just looking over the wireless world section of the SR4A, the free simple and complex actions are pretty much your menu to the matrix (Not counting regular common interaction with it.)

I also use this (http://forums.shadowrun4.com/index.php?topic=8388.0) this guide. Though with less frequency.

If you can launch it discreetely and out of sight the thundercloud would be a good high in the sky overwatch, it's a pretty big drone though, and it might receive negative attention so just watch out. Because it's a blimp it'll probably be really quiet though.

Quick question Jonathan,

When nem is inside, and backstage, if I'm trying to be inconspicuous while looking for something that I'm not supposed to be looking for, or poking around what do you want me to roll? And will I get any bonus for being security +2 or something?
Normally trying to "blend into the crowd" is just an application of Infiltration (with an Urban specialization). In this case, it sounds like you'd be more overt, relying on the fact that you're a guard. So that would be more like Etiquette, to sound/act like you belong in the area. Possibly Con to explain any discrepancies. Basically, if you're dressed like security, most people will ignore you. If you're challenged, it'd be by another security person who knows you're not supposed to be back there, and you'd need to fast-talk your way out of it.

Make sense?

To let everyone know I'm rather new to SR and this is my first time playing a matrix based character so I really have no idea what I'm capable of. Any suggestions will be welcome.
There are some good places to go for references (the Unwired sourcebook, the booklet that comes with the Runner's Toolkit that goes through a run roll by roll, etc.) but I'd rather not send you to books you don't own.

The Matrix chapter in the core rulebook does a pretty decent job of explaining things. As a drone rigger, you can do the obvious (tell drones to do stuff, jump into a drone/vehicle and "become" it), but you should also be pretty good at "spoofing" (sending commands to devices that aren't your's), which can achieve some of the things that hacking can, but a bit faster. Imagine a locked car that the owner can unlock with a button on their key dongle. Well, you could either hack into that car's node to open it, or spoof the "open doors" command.

Obviously, this only works if we're talking about a device that accepts commands in that way. You can't retrieve the email data from Nabo's commlink with spoofing. But you could probably steal his car that way.

Makes sense, would I get any positive modifiers for the uniform or just go straight etiquette or con (I'm assuming go with one of those two, whichever is higher and matches how I'm trying to talk my way out of it).

Just saw your matrix perception on the warehouse node. You got 4 hits, so you can ask me 4 questions about the node. The book gives a few examples of things that you can ask, but if you want to know something else, I'm sure we can work something out:

• Access ID of a user or independent agent • Alert status of node
• Edit date of a file
• Function of a control icon
• Hidden access to another node
• Matrix damage taken by icon
• Presence of a data bomb
• Programs run by persona or agent • Rating of one Matrix attribute
• Type (file, user, agent, program type, etc.) • Whether a file or node is encrypted
• Whether a Trace is running

I think I'm only allowed to know external things about the node at this point. not sure
*Encryption status of the node?
*Firewall Rating?
*Is this node I'm targeting the master node? or do I need to get into it to know that.
*Data bomb (doubt it, but it'd be funny if people were being booted/crashing the node constantly.

There is no data bomb here. The node is encrypted, and has a Firewall rating of 4. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "master node". You've got a pretty good idea from working here that this is the node that the staff are using. It has a guest list, and people with valid tickets are checked against the list, and then given RFID bracelets.

Also, to clarify, launching a drone does not require a test.

@Aryeonos: I much more versed in the Magic Rules than Matrix so help me understand or clarify a few things. The action of readying the Exploit program, what is it for? So that you can use it next round? Would it take you an extra action if you didn't activate now?
You activated on your link a R6 Exploit program, I was under the impression that you can't have a program running higher than your 'link Response (You can have programs up to System Rating, R6 in your case, but they can only run at Response Rating, 5 in your case I believe), Am I not correct?

So is a stealth program important if I plan on spoofing something (I understand it is very important if I'm hacking in other capacities)? Cause after some research I realized I should probably have a stealth program which I don't.  >:(  :-[ Also can I find/ buy one on the matrix or possibly somehow in character say that I had one but It was messed up and have an excuse to ask freak for help in getting one without patches showing what a idiot his player is? I'd also be willing to trade one of the programs I bought at character creation (that I haven't used) for a stealth program of equal value. Sorry everybody :-[

I'm fine with any of those options. If you have enough money to buy a decent Stealth program with your starting cash (doubtful) you can do that, or you can trade a program in. I see no reason to punish a player for a simple mistake like this.

You can't run a program higher than your system, which mine is 6, if you run more programs than your system you start getting response degradation, which will hurt you in matrix combat. I readied it in advance because the cryptanalysis takes a whole combat round, so I used my first IPs to ready some things, and unload a few others. (Which it doesn't say anywhere how many actions unloading a program takes.)

if you need a stealth program, you could subscribe to my link and I could load the program onto your link, it isn't really copied it's just running on yours until you reboot. I think it can be worked that way at least...

SRA p222
The System program is limited by the base Response rating of the device it is on: if the base Response rating of the device is lower than the System rating, then the System rating is set to equal the Response rating.

System limits indeed the rating of programs but Response limits how high the system can run therefore also limiting the Rating of the programs running.

So basically, Response is your hardware, and system is your operating system. It doesn't matter if you have a fast OS if your computer is still crap.

Kinda like trying to run Windows 7 on a 486

See that's the language I understand. So I wasted money on a system of 6 if my response is 5. As well as all the programs I have that are rating 6. Because everything is limited to 5 by my response. Its lowered even further depending on how many programs I'm running correct?

Also according to some math (guessing) I've done I'm looking at about 7-10 minutes till the blimp hits a 10-15 story height (about 100-150ft).

btw I'm trying not to use too much real life info here. I do concert photography and interviews a lot for my side job so I have a tendancy to have more of an idea of how things work backstage. The guard in front of the dressing room has not yet left the room. He is trying to contact Jager by commlink. The guard by the exit is indeed inside the building. That door is the only door that is being guarded from the inside, as the front and side entrances (which both lead to the concert floor) are only guarded from the outside.
