I should start by say "hello" to those who have not 'met' me yet. I should have placed my previous posts in this section, but oh well. They can be found first in the GM Discussion erea and second in the Secret History area to get an idea of where my campaign is going.
I came across some material that is not strictly cannon that called out to the creative part of my Shadowrun id. (ID if it's supposed to be capitalized.) It involves the founder of the Illuminate of the New Dawn, Rozilyn Hernandez. Having been educated in parochial schools I am familiar with the Sylvestrines. I looked up the Black Lodge and from what I understand the Knights Templar, Bavarian Illuminati and the Freemasons are some of it's organisations.
My question has to do with some comments that were allegedly made on Jack Point or another of the ubiquitous semi secret runner sites. They refer to Rozilyn Hernandez:
> There are a half-dozen Sylvestrines, all professors at Georgetown or CUA, who are all in the IOND Inner Circle. There is a theory that she was already in the Black Lodge, but she “came to God” and eventually founded the IOND in response. Another takes that one step further and asserts that she was “deprogrammed” by the Templars. This is the best part. She was the face of the IOND, and recruited other Lodge members, but those Sylvestrines (Templars) control it behind the the scenes.
> Pistons
> New Jesuits agents don’t get to just quit.
> Fianchetto
> Here’s a thought. She’s another one of those politicos nostalgic for the old USA, rules an international order of politically connected mages, and her old running mate is the damn Yankee carpetbagger who weaseled his way into the Manor House. There’s your New Revolution ringleader. I normally don’t mess with politicos, but I could make an exception in this case.
> Kane
> Calm down. Let’s take this offline.
> Riser
Actually I have a couple questions, I did not see a reference to these "New Jesuits" in my research of the Black Lodge, but I do know who and what they are ( Papal clean-up squads if it all gets boiled down, plus or minus) . So what is Fianchetto talking about?
And who is the carpetbagger Kane is talking about with his New Revolution? Colloton?
My story-line involves the characters saving Mrs. Hernandez from certain death thus earning themselves a solid Mrs. Johnson slash mentor. I have three or four groups in mind that might have done the 'hit' on Hernandez. I just want all the info I can get so I make an informed decision on the actual shooter. I am currently researching Pistons, Fianchetto, Kane and Riser to see if I can use them.
-
The carpetbagger Kane refers do is, I believe, the current President of the CAS (forget the name and am away-from-books). IIRC, the current pres is a transplant from the UCAS.
Again, IIRC, the New Jesuits are a group of folks that run around down in Aztlan generally being a pain in the ass for the government, religion, home corporation, etc. They're basically dirty tricks experts for God.
-
There's also the Knights of Saint Nicholas. ;D
-
Valashar is right. The carpetbagger reference is to Ramsay McMulkin, the CAS President. He is originally from the UCAS.
Oh, here are the links to the piece quoted and another.

In case you didn't notice, some of the Seraphim material did end up in Clutch. So it's sort of canon as written there, but consult your LGS for more info.

Hehe , Clutch of Dragons is one of the few books I don't have yet. I will betaking care of that small problem presently. And thanks James for putting those links in there. I'm never sure about putting links in a forum even when they are relevant, just in case there is rules against linking.

Moving this thread to "The Secret History". This forum is specifically for the Shadowrun Missions Living Campaign. :)
-
Hell, I was in the right forum in the first place hehe.
-
Yeah. The forum layout can be a little confusing, especially because i've noticed that people have gotten in the habit of referring to any shadowrun adventure as a "mission", which then gets people mixing them up with Shadowrun Missions, which is our living campaign. :)

So, no love for the Knights of Saint Nicholas? ;D

Are they elves?
-
Yes, along with the Holy Friars of Sinter Klaus. However, neither of them can hold a candle to that other top-secret elven war society, the Mystic House of Keebler.
-
Did I miss something in one of the books? I was always under the impression that Hernandez was one of the badguys that looks like a goodguy along with the INOD.
Was I mistaken in that assumption?
-
There are no good guys in Shadowrun, no heroes, no epics to be written for the selfless...
There's only one side: Your own.
Well, that's how I view it at least. But I'm a heavy cynic.

+1 to you sir.

My players are going to have to learn to cover their own asses, the sooner the better. I am developing the assassination attempt on the side as I ready my introductory "scene" if you will to get them acquainted with the rules. I have not put much thought into what Mrs. Hernandez will want from, or how she will use the players. I'm also developing the people who make the hit, whom I will keep under wraps for the nonce. I need to buy one of those big eraser boards to keep a flow chart on like detectives use lol.

Eventually you learn to do it in your head, or not if you're unfortunate.

That's what I did with AD&D but with learning a whole new game mechanic I find that there is a back up at the intersection of rules & imagination street. This will pass with time. Sooner than later. I find the more NPCs I make the more familiar and comfortable I am with the system. Though I have combat down pretty good, i think I might stumble a bit with AR & VR combat. Or even just playing through Boxter's (Dwarf Technomancer) part in all this. Even though it's a "make believe" computer meta-network I find it complicated. I hope I don't over think it during play. I'm going over those sections again tonight. If anyone out there has any suggestions on how to play the networked AR & VR side of the game feel free to chip in. I want it to flow and be lite and simple.

Way to kneecap my mental dick-waving. :-)

A simple "No" would have sufficed.

ah man James, I laughed so hard I spotted when I saw your post. I did NOT expect that. Plus 1 to you my comic mental dick waving friend. :o

To be entirely honest, I know nothing about the Knights of Saint Nicholas; the joke was a long play on the whole 'elves' and 'Santa' thing, and not meant to be mean, CanRay.
That said - is there a 'Knights of Saint Nicholas' in Shadowrun? If so, tell me - or at least give me a reference!!
-
It's in Safehouses.

It's in Safehouses.
Didn't remember this straight away, but its a pretty cool tidbit...
[spoiler]I wasn’t sure if I wanted to share this or not, but I figured why not.
The Catholic Church has a series of safehouses run in countries
that have heavy anti-Christian attitudes by an unconfirmed and
completely denied group called “The Knights of Saint Nicholas,”
which will also provide safety for persecuted Jews and Muslims,
and occasionally to shadowrunners that have proven that they
are “of good moral fiber and friends of the Church.” Nicholas is,
apparently, the patron saint of shadowrunners.
> Plan 9
You’ve asked us to swallow a lot of big stuff over the years, Plan
9, but are you telling me, with a straight face no less, that Santa
Claus is the saint of shadowrunners? I ain’t buying.
> Slamm-0!
> Makes sense in a way. I mean, most if not all of us have gone
down a chimney at least once in our careers, haven’t we? Well,
HVAC systems—close enough.

I now remember reading this. Sorry CanRay, when you provide so much quality, sometimes a piece of coolness slips through the memory cracks. :'( And its a Plan 9 quote! and apparently Saint Nick is our parton saint!
I'm so ashamed for not picking the reference straight away.... :'(

Oh, yeah, so NOW I remember reading it ...
-
I was reading the Sixth World Almanac this morning and was a bit surprised to see this:
2042- Oct 25th, Italy. Poke John the XXV allows women into the Roman Catholic Priesthood.
Now, I'd talked a bit about wanting to do this a while back, but the response from the Catholics was rather ... pronounced. It's a pretty darn sacred tradition, so changing it would be a Big Deal. Turns out that ol' John had done it thirty years back and, somehow, that'd never got covered.
It probably should.
Of course, that brings us to the Pope himself. John XXV is still in office, first elected in 2013. That means he's been in there for 60 years, and clearly wasn't young when he started. He's outlived all of his opposition and the Brazillian has since stacked the college of Cardinals with like-minded folks. When (Heck, IF!) he dies, the policies are likely to continue, rather than snap back to something regressive like his predecessor, who was famously anti-Meta and anti-Awakening.
Sixty years.
Man.

Unfortunately the Pope HASN'T managed to stack the College of Cardinals. It's explained in more detail in Shadows of Europe, but the short version is that the (arch)conservative side of the Church is still going strong because they can designate their respective successors. Hence, deadlock.
The next Papal election is going to be . . . Drawn-out. Hell, Fianchetto might get pulled back into Vatican political machinations.

Quality, well, yeah, maybe. Certainly not Quantity. Yet.
Considering that Saint Nicholas of Myra (http://saints.sqpn.com/saint-nicholas-of-myra/) is the Patron Saint of Thieves (Supposedly penitent thieves, but all devout Catholic thieves accept him apparently), pawnbrokers, paupers, the falsely accused, prisoners, victims of lawsuits lost unjustly, murderers, orphans, pirates, the poor... Well, let's just say that he's probably also the Patron Saint of Shadowrunners, Fixers, the SINless, and at least half the Contacts every Shadowrunner has... Yeah, I felt I was justified in saying so.
"Knights of Saint Nicholas" was a nickname for thieves at one time, as well, BTW. For an obvious reason.
Now, is this Plan 9 spouting off conspiracies, or is he accurate in that there is an organization dedicated to protecting the faithful by creating safehouses (and probably hiring Shadowrunners to smuggle them out of bad situations), is all in how well you believe Plan 9. His info is good on occasion, but it's also often very wrong.
See, I do research. ;D
PS: I had a hard choice with going with good ol' St. Nick, or Saint Joshua the Patriarch, who is the Patron Saint of Spies (Apparently). But I figured that the Santa Claus joke was more than worth it. And, let's face it, most Shadowrunners have more in common with thieves than spies.
And to think, the last time I was in a Catholic Church was over a decade ago.
