Title: [OOC] Virtual Underworld 93 Planning Thread

UV93 OOC Bio Thread (http://forums.shadowrun4.com/index.php?topic=79.0)

Just for shits and giggles, I'm setting up a In Character (IC) thread called, coincidentally enough, Virtual Underworld 93.

VU93 is not a game thread, per se.  THere's not a GM running anything or controlling anything.  Instead, it's simply cooperative, in character roleplaying set in a Matrix node running some rather antiquated code.  It was set up in Seattle in 2072 by a former Decker turned Fixer named MacCallister.  MacCallister is a crotchety old ork who still frequently swears using the old lingo (drek, frag, hoop, slot), and since he misses the old days, and figures that there are other older timers like him, as well as kids who might enjoy being "retro", he's gone ahead and set up a node using the original Shadowland coding.

So whats this mean?  Basically, it's like Shadowland or even Jackpoint today, except there's not necessarily a focused topic.  It's an IC Chatroom.  You can roleplay with each other, or with yourself (Be careful, you'll go blind), or just tell IC stories or whatever.  There are a couple rules, however...

1)  Use the proper format.

>>>>>[This is the proper format.]<<<<<
     -- MacCallister (19:44:23/09-04-2072)

That's 5 >'s, Brackets "[ ]", and closed by 5 <<<<<'s for the body of the text.
5 Spaces, two dashes "--", a space, and then the character's handle, a space, and then a time stamp enclosed by parentheses "( )" using the HH:MM:SS/Month-Day-Year format.  Just like the original sourcebooks.  Use the current time and date (Don't worry about time zones, and time shifts, just post your current time on your computer), and todays date, with the year as 2072 (And in January, we'll bump to 2073).

I do plan to be a bit of a Style Nazi here...  So try and follow the correct format.  Here's an example that you can cut and paste if you need:

Code: [Select]
>>>>>[XXXXX]<<<<<
     -- XXXXX (HH:MM:SS/MM-DD-YY)

2)  Only use your own characters.

Unless you have permission (Granted here in the OOC thread), do not "speak" or post for any characters but your own.

3)  We only know what you tell us.

Use the OOC VU93 Character Bio thread to post any background information you would like about your character.  This information represents "public info", so you probably won't want in depth backstories and family trees.  This is the stuff that your fellow runners would know about you.  If there's a deep dark secret, have it come out through roleplay (or just leave it a secret for folks to guess about).  But, if you want to be recognized as a badass street samurai, you need to tell us why.  Otherwise, you're a nobody (or a lying braggart) as far as the other runners posting are concerned.

4)  No Mary-Sue's

Mary Sue has a lot of definition these days, so I'll spell out what I mean...  You are not the best in the world at anything.  You can be highly trained, you can have a good rep, but no characters are instantly recognized as "Holy shit!  That guy stared down Lofwyr while having his way with both Nadia Davier and Ryan Mercury, and Dunklezahn made him President of the World when he died!  And I hear he's a Cyberzombie-Free Spirit-Vampiric Half Dragon who shoots lightning bolts out of his ass!"

Be realistic, be down to earth, be humble.  Well, a little humble.  There is always someone better than you.  :)

5)  No published characters.

Unless those are actually your characters.  So no Fastjack, no Kane, no NetCat, no Laughing Man...  (I can cheat a little and use Bull, since Bull is actually my character :)).

6)  Play nicely with others.

Similar to #2, this basically means you have to roleplay off each other.  If RiggerBoi is posting about how he's been hitting on QueenSusie and they're going out next week, no replying with "Oh yeah?  I just killed Susie!"  Unless you work it out here in the planning thread first, of course.

7)  Have fun!

Try and play in the spirit this is intended, and just have fun.  It's a light way to roleplay without the hassle or expectation of an actual full on game.  You can put as much or as little into it as you want, and you'll get out of it as much as you put in, if not more.

8)  The Threads

Last one.  There are effectively three threads to watch.  This one is the Planning Thread.  Any discussion or planning or setup you need to do for the game that is out of character, do it here.

There is a "Character Bio" thread.  That is ONLY for posting character Bios.  If youíre planning to use the characters on a regular basis, I suggest linking to the Bio(s) in your Signature.  I will have the mods remove any discussion or non Bio posts that go in that thread, to keep it cleaned up.

And finally, the IC thread.  This is ONLY for In Character posts.  Please follow the formatting (see #1 above) and do not post any OOC stuff there.  Again, Iíll have mods delete any OOC chat that goes on in that thread.

Iím the De Facto GM for this game, though as I said, Iím not really going to run anything, just hang out and participate where I can.

Sorry man.  You can post there, but you need a character other than Fastjack.

Basically, it comes down to two things...

1)  I'm playing around with this as part of Missions, or I'd like to.  MacCallister is one of the NPC COntacts that shows up in Season 4 (and showed up in one of the CMP adventures run at Gen Con, Origins, and Dragon*Con this year), and Tauren is going to be my own Missions Character.  There's no way something like this can really be "official", but by the same token, I'd like to use it to play around with and play up some of the things that may pop up in Missions.

2)  Nothing personal, but major NPCs tend to have their own "voice", and we don't want people just grabbing them and going crazy with them, writing them all out of character.

3)  I want to keep this on a more "normal" play level...  Fastjack opens us up to Harlequin, dragons, and all kinds of crazy stuff. :)

No prob. I figured as much. The fun thing about 'Jack is that he pops in infrequently, doesn't actually give out too much info, then let's the kiddies wonder what the hell's going on. ;D

Oh, and to help the newbies, copy and paste this code, replacing the X's (and time/date holders) to post on the thread:

Code: [Select]
>>>>>[XXXXX]<<<<<
     -- XXXXX (HH:MM:SS/MM-DD-YY)

Nice.  I'll add that to my original post.  Good thinking!
Title: Re: [OOC] Virtual Underworld 93 Biography Thread
Post by: FastJack on <09-09-10/1753:51>
Hey Bull, there was just a post on my Shadowland/Jackpoint thread about if we could set up some postings on various subjects. What I was thinking was if we could use the aliases here in multiple ShadowSEA type of threads where we might have a subject introduced (like the sourcebooks) and people can post In-Character in regards to the subject. We'd make sure that only the characters on here were used, though.

Whaddya think?
Title: Re: [OOC] Virtual Underworld 93 Planning Thread
Post by: Bull on <09-09-10/1951:17>
Hey, I had your post moved over here...  Was a bit more appropriate, and kept that thread cleaner.

Anyway, hey, go for it.  The more the merrier.  My Suggestion is for any spin off threads that use the "Virtual Underworld" style posting to have a [VU93] tag in the subject...  So like, say if we were discussing new guns...  "[IC VU93] New Gun Released by Ares!"

And if someone wanted to start up ShadowSEA threads, they're more than welcome to do that as well.

There aren't any hard and fast rules for this particular forum, other than that it's for playing and running games.  So each thread and game can make their own sets of rules. :)

Ok, THugboy is a random, asshole mook I created just to have someone be a jerk.  I think Patrick has dibs, but if bad things happen to him, I wouldn't be terribly upset.  He's basically a jacked up Street Ganger with some wires who thinks he's a badass Street Samurai (Without, you know, the samurai honor, skill, or intelligence).

Check the UV93 Bio thread for more details, but...  Pretty much just your handle and what would be publicly known about your character (or could be found with a little bit of data searching or legwork).

It's loose, it's light, it's just for fun :)

Ok, MacCallister has a couple minor jobs lined up.  They're nothing major, moderate pay, and whoever takes them gets to make up whatever they want.  It's nothing too serious.  Just post back a full report, as an IC story or whatever.  Drop me a PM if you're interested in one of the jobs.  First couple takers get it :)

If folks are a bit worried that FoxBoy is a bit on the mary sue side, I could post a full character sheet here if needed. He's just a standard character from a table top game I'm in, 400 BP + 72 karma.

Mystic, you you may want to pay just a bit more attention to the names in the IC thread. Doc Chaos's character that you responded to is named "Gent", yet you called him Doc.

Also, on another note, I notice alot of people are constantly not formatting their posts correctly.

Rule number one is:
Quote
Use the proper format.

>>>>>[This is the proper format.]<<<<<
     -- MacCallister (19:44:23/09-04-2072)

That's 5 >'s, Brackets "[ ]", and closed by 5 <<<<<'s for the body of the text.

>>>>>[XXXXX]<<<<<
     -- XXXXX (HH:MM:SS/MM-DD-YY)

I'd also like to take the time to point out that this system is designed for military time. There's no AM or PM, so it's best to list 10 PM as 22:00.

Post by: FoxBoy on <10-09-10/1311:35>
I like to point out that the 'little bit of fun' foxboy's offering out to folks is an run I like to get started, just as in experiment. It'll be a side thread of the VU93 thread, a run to harass the local 'adult entertainment' trid studio and it's manager until they get the hint.

Foxboy, if you want to start a PbP thing, create a new thread called "[OOC] XXXXX" asking for recruitment. That way you can get all the character sheets for all that are involved in one place.

Off Topic Note:  I'm going to archive the main VUW thread and start up a new one around December 1st.  As I mentioned before, one thing I kinda want to do is play around with some stuff for Missions in these threads, so while a lot of the chatter that goes up will be the usual goofy stuff, some of it may be hints as to plot developments for upcoming Missions adventures, or discuss some fallout from released adventures.  I'll likely start up a new [IC] thread each month.

Sure! Just go over to the Biography (http://forums.shadowrun4.com/index.php?topic=79.0) thread to lay out the details on the character, then go ahead an post away in the VU threads.

BTW, Bull... January's almost over. Maybe a new thread everytime a Mission has (or is about to) come out? ;)

Shouldn't be. We're pretty flexable about that here. But then, if I can bring in one that was converted from 3rd ed, which was converted from 2nd ed...I don't think that there will be a problem as like Wyrm said, you don't break the rules.

Now I just need to figure out a way to write up the character's bio without making her look like on of those 'Mary Sue' characters mentioned earlier. The GM let us get away with a whole lot of crap (and paid us about two million either every month or every other month).

Id say. keep it simple, keep it consice, keep it real. Show merits, show flaws, give them quirks. Show there is more to them than the first impression, there is more beneath the surface. Be proud of victories, but also never ashamed of defeats. Also show that for whatever they have gained, there has always been a price to pay. In short, make them (meta) human.

Just my .285734 cents, after taxes.

Trim away 95% of your gear (and 'bought' contacts).  Allude to stuff; don't write anything out, just 'suggest' something -- and keep it incredibly vague.  If, in your time playing her, she fought it out with great dragons as part of a CIA hit squad, just mention that she did some black contract work for the UCAS government.  Or, better yet, don't say anything about her employers, or her runs.  "She was active in the eastern UCAS from '56 to '64."

I'm very not sure where to post this, because though in part I wanted to throw up a complaint, I think everyone affected -- and that's pretty much everyone posting to VU93 -- should be able to either tell me I'm being a whinging schmuck and to shut up and deal, or agree that it's gone too far.

Chrona -- just ... stop.  It was cute the first time.  It was annoying the second, so 'steps were taken'.  Now, presuming I'm reading correctly what you've written and what I think you mean by it, it's getting to the point of 'nyah nyah I can do anything I want and you can't stop me nyah nyah nyah.'

Please stop with the spam bullshit.

Please.

From the last post, it looks like there is a plan. If it is too much PM Chrona (and maybe copy Bull, since this is his baby) to hash out what's going on.

For me, I do kinda like it since VU93 is a less restrictive club than JackPoint, so there could be some spamming and decking going on...

Well, the characters I post as here are characters I've played in a couple games before, so I know their personalities and backstories well. And then I expand on things from there. The one major 'event' kind of thing I did with Iceblade was the Pyramid run (check the IC thread starting on page 73 or so). That was something that was an off-screen collaboration involving run ideas from Wyrm Oroboros and Wolfgar that Keita and I worked up into a series of events. Which we then broadcast 'snapshots' of.

As for published events and the like, I have pulled aspects from them into my writing, but only in the "Hey, I heard that..." kind of way.

Most of the time, just play your character and have fun.

Title: Re: [OOC] Virtual Underworld 93 Planning Thread
Post by: Silence on <08-20-13/1916:53>
To sum it up, should anyone do any digging about the post, yes, a bunch of guys have spent the last month doing surgical strikes to take out a thrill gang that could have gotten nastier than the Halloweeners, since once of their recruiting methods is to kidnap and blackmail or brainwash young Awakened to join them.  Most of the Awakened kids have been returned home, if they had one, if not, they've dropped out of sight.  The guy spearheading the attack is a druid that's been semi-active in the Seattle shadows for a while who has run under two handles.  One is Po'boy, but an older one is Uath MacImmoman.  An urban combat specialist with a reputation for either a quick, clean operation that leaves no clue who hit you, or rather loud, "messy" ops that leave no doubt as to why that particular person or group just plain had to go.   As an aside, his "messy" ops generally tend to only inflict casualties on the guilty party(s).
Title: Re: [OOC] Virtual Underworld 93 Planning Thread
Post by: Silence on <08-21-13/2322:47>
To be entirely honest, I was tempted to come in as Po' Boy(Uath MacImmoman) but decided against it, largely due to the fact that after I looked over his sheet(which I still have, in case that guy runs again) he's maybe 10 Karma shy of being on par with some of the guys in Street Legends.  Of course, this was after running through Ghost Cartels, Dawn of the Artifacts and a bunch of other stuff that was learn or die situations.  So, I decided to try posting as his latest apprentice.  By the way, and apprentice that screws up(Mouthing off to a pair of level 6 Initiates counts) gets named Siouxsie.  Or Robert, if it's a woman.
Title: Re: [OOC] Virtual Underworld 93 Planning Thread
Post by: The Wyrm Ouroboros on <08-22-13/2321:21>
Well, here's the thing: your recent 'VU93 Street Legends Shadowtalk' posts suggest that everyone should recognize 'Uath', and nobody does, because he's only from your games.  Your comment on the Wyrm's shadowtalk would get a response of 'who the frell is 'Uath'' - because even though he's a legend in your game, it's your game - and not everything here.  From the Wyrm's viewpoint, he's still a bloody isolated runner - because he's only been around since, what, '65?  '70?  And more-or-less only in Seattle, barring a trip or three outside the city??  My point with this is that neither this-Siouxsie (as there's another one in old Shadowtalk) nor Uath MacImmoman/Po' Boy has traction here - no recognition factor.

The Wyrm has it, just because I've been posting here for a while, and because I've been posting/playing as this character on other places, and people who post here know me from there.  Plus, by both his admission and others' ICly, he has worked and worked very hard indeed to keep himself on the down-low.  When you purposely burn Street Cred to lower your Notoriety, when you purposely burn Street Cred to lower your Public Awareness, when you run under other names in order to keep your primary profile low, only the people who ran with you are going to remember you, because even though 'the Wyrm' has the Karma, its cred and impact gets applied to the name.

I'm not saying 'go away'; please god, don't do that.  But you-as-Siouxsie needs to understand that you might get plenty of 'who?  Never heard of him' when you're talking about your street god.  You might also want to come up with reasons for the karma Uath earned from published adventures; ICly, it's never anyone here who did them, always 'someone else'.
Title: Re: [OOC] Virtual Underworld 93 Planning Thread
Post by: Silence on <08-23-13/0316:54>
I know that, and am expecting a lot of "Who?"  And I'm not expecting people to know who he is.  Please, dear lord, don't start posting a lot of "Oh, I know that guy." as related to Uath.  Part of the reason Siouxsie was jacked into here was Bull's rep, and the fact that nobody on here should have the slightest clue who either name is.  Sorry if I gave a different impression on that matter.

Frankly, I'm half-expecting some of the more moral runners to have a distinct dislike for him until they pry all the facts out of Siouxsie.  The kid's not being 100% honest, because what kid is when he gets caught doing something stupid by the adults?

Everyone's a late joiner when they jump in, TDM.  Read a few pages back, maybe get a read on the poster's IDs and backgrounds.  If you have a particular plot in mind - personal or something 'run' - post about it here, ask for volunteers, that sort of thing.  Otherwise, well - dip in, talk about current events (SR-wise), and have fun.

Hell, if your char's really a druid, she should be really curious why there seems to be a grove in Seattle.  Even if she isn't, she'd be curious, because the way most druids act in England, she'd be wondering why nobody'd shot them all yet.

As per my post on IC thread, as you may argued I'm only an european try to shine some light in that part of the continent, there is full of movers and shackers and no one occuping the spot (or no one visible), hence I'll post something as my fixer and as one of my beloved NPC (Pixel, that strange Pixie, that it).
As my characted told in the IC thread I don't want anyone play my games here if no characters really want (I have some small jobs perhaps), what I'm try to do is dig infos around and take some speculative talk about some events may or may not be happening and from there proceed where the game guide us ;)
If nothing happens I thing I'll continue to post something only happening in my mind  with those characters ;D
Hope there is nothing wrong with that

Extremely paranoid about Renraku in particular. Given recent events, it's probably understandable that someone who is naturally paranoid is paranoid about nanotech, NeoNET, and Evo.

White IC was originally under the impression that you were looking to hire someone to go looking for her, not cohorts for a group effort.  Due to her group's restrictions, she will not be able to join you.  Sorry.  :/

Resonance realm dive sounds great. But Booze will not just jump that much. Last time it was hard for him. But... : 1.He will easily 'boost your stats', and take his watch in matrix, next to resonance well. Kinda have a feeling the 'disoannce mancers' gonna came for you...

The Denver research facility sounds nasty. Booze will not engage physically, but sending flying eye with high resonance link could be enough to see what is inside. Hopefully Booze have only some bioMods, no Nano ;)

So? How we going to do this?

Reason for a group effort is 1: "Crazy strong and cool" sprite spells possible trouble 2: I think ill be going a dissonance route and so more backup the better

Actually, without the aid of either a Resonance Rift or a free sprite capable of creating a Resonance Gate, only technomancers who have undergone submersion can access the Realms, much like how only mages who have undergone initiation can access the metaplanes without an astral rift or a spirit making a gateway.

In Ice's message he talked about nanotech guys. Anyone in that field is worth contacting if the drone makes it in and survives. Also contacting anyone that has to do with security might get some clues as to what defenses the inside has.

Yes, a Rift allows passage to the Realms, though they are inherently unstable, so it would likely be a one-way trip. A Resonance Well is like a Mana Surge, it provides a bonus to Technomancers working in it.

My idea is to get into matrix firefight over some virtual 'Turf,... But it was so nasty, becouse plenty of hardware have been damaged in the fight. Might be that someone on the Run had a problem due to increased static, noise, and other matrix war engagment?

I can see this as a sort of ongoing thing for a month or so - gang rumbles never really manage to hash themselves out all at once, especially in such expansive turf.  So long as all three matrix gangs get used by various chummerskis around here to wipe the floor with, I've got no problem with it.  I can imagine there'd be a goodly bunch of dead hacker-ganger bodies around too ...

Even at the best of times, rival gangs aren't at peace, but simply sharing an armistice, one that can broken at any time. Same goes for Matrix gangs. Like Wyrm said, it can start as a hack-battle over designing the theme at Tux's for the night. Tux's is a virtual dance club where the guests rework the theme according to their whims, depending on who can control the host long enough. You have three hacker gangs present at the same time, trying to change the theme all at once, then things may very well get out of hand. Gang wars have started for less, especially when pride is on the line. And gang wars never blow over all at once. Definitely take a couple weeks or months to run through the bad blood, and come to a new status quo (or return to the old one). In the meantime, lot of people gonna get dumpshock, and remember that these hacker gangs often have other gangs they are affiliated with that help provide muscle in meatspace when they need it. If those affiliates happen to be rivals as well (or just plain crazy, like the Halloweeners) then you've got a recipe for a low-level gang war erupting across both Seattle and the Emerald City. Though the syndicates will probably 'encourage' them to settle things before it erupts into anything full-fledged or involving mass civilian casualties. Knight Errant was brought in just four years ago because the Tempo wars blew up big. They'll crack down hard, on everyone, if anything similar looks to be brewing, and the syndicates know it. Police crackdowns are bad for business, afterall.

Note: The PKE Meter is a Ghostbusters reference. SlowDeck is hoping no one catches it and realizes he's feeding a line of bulldrek about needing special equipment for this  ;)

Flip, that is of course if you're amenable to him getting involved. He's like me: a bit of a know-it-all jackass. I'd also need to know your plans for this.

Flip obviously wouldn't get the reference, he's a young gun that is freaked.

The box itself only has magic to return to the last person who bled on it (Pizza Boy was being shot at and somewhat bloodied when he got the box), via a spirit permanently bound to the box. Inside the box is a dagger that drains essence, and whenever it drains essence it permanently infuses the stolen essence into the user.

For those that haven't caught on yet or who haven't paid attention, Nightmare is participating in the 2076 Desert Wars with a three man squad made up of herself, a technomancer, and a mage.  I'm actually roleplaying this plot offline, so most of the posts will be a bit self-contained but I'm open to anyone talking about what some other unit is up to for those that are "watching".  Note:  Nightmare's squad, which known as the Iron Knights (there's a backstory there that maybe I'll get into later but not right now), was hired by larger unit for the large scale affairs, which are currently going on, but will be participating in the Merc Challenge as a single unit (be late next month to the month after, which would put it near the end of Desert Wars).

Nightmare's lose of connection is not due to whatever the Reality Hackers is up to, it's a lose of her connection due to a mortar to her satellite link.  She will be back up online in a few days.

Ok, so here are some words of explanation:
The seatle Matrix Rumble is quite simple, CKs VS RHs. But as you see quite clearlly this is just a mess. Pure chaos. In this is some conspiracy xD Any one recognizing CMOS? Leader of Midwest Pirats Guild? And what is MPG doing here? I will not tell you yet, but you should easily get the idea. For now, Booze had just bad timing. He was on a party, in Tux's when it all started. He and his team, are trying to find out what is it all about. That keeps him almost all the time in matrix combat. That is why he is so hard to reach. You could notice the news,... hacked by some RH punk.

Booze, I presume the 'Seattle Matrix Rumble' is done by now?

...while I'm tempted to post a reference to Jackpoint in response to the head cases comment, I'm not sure how widely read Jackpoint actually is in-universe.

Like anything in the shadows, the information gets spread around.  Names may be changed to protect the guilty - 'friend of a friend', so to speak - but the core info is disseminated pretty thoroughly through the shadows, at least the upper and middle 'levels', as it were.  Newbies, especially matrix-ignorant ones, haven't a chance in hell ...

I wouldn't call Gunspell matrix-ignorant... it's just not her topic of focus.

She's still not the right character to make the comment, though, you're right about that.
