Title: An Archive of Adepts - Walking the Ways
Post by: Aria on <04-03-12/0844:20>
Relocated

It has been a long time since I've put an update here as the platform has been unstable for a while...but I have been maintaining the archive and updating some of the old adepts as new qualities, powers etc have become available.  It can now be found here:

Archive of Adepts (https://stormy-waters-2075.obsidianportal.com/wiki_pages/archive-of-adepts)

***

Anarchy

With the new rules comes some new opportunities for making adepts...and much faster!  Here are a few I've come up with so far...and they may inspire me to create their full SR5 version at some point.

Runner
<<Cam>> (https://stormy-waters-2075.obsidianportal.com/wikis/cam) Ghoul Swordmaster
<<Briar>> (https://stormy-waters-2075.obsidianportal.com/wikis/briar-a) Human Matrix Adept
<<Linnet>> (https://stormy-waters-2075.obsidianportal.com/wikis/linnet) Troll Invisible Adept

SR5

To my mind adepts are one of the most versatile archetypes in SR, potentially covering a multitude of paths and different roles on a team.  I’ve started re-organising the SR5 archive around the Ways now that I have a number of different adepts statted up.  Any thoughts or comments are very welcome!

The adepts here don’t necessarily have the ‘Way’ that they have been listed under but I’ve grouped them under the category that seems to best fit their mindset.

SR4
I love adepts, they are by far my favourite SR character and I’ve played lots of them over the years and the choices have only become more varied with SR4.  What follows are links to at least one adept type for every Way, and sometimes more than one, mostly for my own benefit but some might be useful to other people.  Some have developed with karma from their starting point (additions are marked in red) and some are starting characters …although a word of warning, some are more optimised than others and reflect my personal tastes (if you want truly impressive adept builds check out UmaroVI’s archetypes, I’ve linked them here with UmaroVI’s permission).

Where the adept doesn’t have the Way quality I have listed them under the category that most closely reflects their mental outlook, in my opinion at least.

I have tried to avoid creating adepts that all use the same powers (after all there are enough that it should be relatively easy to avoid repetition) but there are certain powers that will make more than one appearance because they are ideally suited to running…any suggestions on ways to mix things up would be great!  A number of these builds have already been scrutinised here on the forums and I’ve tried to incorporate people’s suggestions where possible.  I’ve highlighted in blue  characters that haven’t been commented on…just in case anyone wants to wade in.

Any thoughts, comments, suggestions very much appreciated!  And if you have a striking adept build that you would like me to list here then send me a link and I’ll post it alongside mine (with full credit to you of course).  Other peoples’ adepts are highlighted in red.

And I’ll keep on adding adepts as they are completed…plenty more to share!

I'd like to suggest that all the augmented ones be moved into the 'Burnouts' list whether they have that Way mechanically chosen or not, as that is where they are headed.

That's a heck of an assumption to make.

Check the second link in my sig for two new adepts (this time with actual ways), the Qi Master and the Bio-rigger. ;D

Not sure I agree with that either...bioware is so prevelant and relatively essence friendly that a large number of adepts might seek a cheap boost to their powers.  I see Burnout as a much more extreme route.

Exactly. Muscle Toner 4 + Muscle Enhancement 4 = 0.80 Essence at Standard Grade. +8 stat points for losing 1 Magic (therefore 1 PP), vs paying many times that for 8 points of IPA mostly over the natural limit. Only a diehard purist wouldn't take that deal.

Not to quibble, but standard grade Muscle Toner 4 and Muscle Augmentation 4 would be 0.80 Essence each, not together. But, yes, that opens up the possibility of +5 stat points for losing 1 point of Magic, which is far less expensive than what those improvements would cost in power points.

*facepalm* You are indeed correct. Up until WotA hit I always took Type O System for my Adept builds, so I'm used to thinking in those terms.

Still, even 2 points of Magic for the full +8 is a pretty good deal. For 2 Essence you can, if you take it all as Alphaware, also squeeze in a Suprathyroid Gland. That brings it to +5 Agility, +5 Strength, +1 Reaction, +1 Body (and possibly maxed out IP boost) for the cost of 2 Magic.

Depending on how your GM rules on the subject, Type O System might also let you slip Synaptic Booster 3 into that package. I say it's up to the GM because, due to Standard and Basic being used differently in Augmentation than in SR4A, there's some ambiguity over whether Type O System covers Cultured Bioware. My GM says it does, and I agree, if only because that's the only way it's even close to being worth 30 BP.

I politely disagree, and just as politely suggest that if you really need to start up that argument again, you could do it in another thread instead of cluttering up this one.

For that matter, i usually take Lofwyr as a contact. Comes in handy if you need him.
What i am worried more about is the million nuyen on the sheet, but then i thought this is for new example archtypes.

[DISCLAIMER: The following rant is not meant to deride, ridicule, or otherwise impunge Swamp Fox's build. It is merely a diatribe on the classification of said build. And yes, I've had a lot of coffee.]

As an erstwhile deshi of the Kazikure Ugi, I must respectfully observe that the "Rattrap" build is not a "ninja".

Sure he has stealth an can disguise himself and has Killing Hands...but his highest weapon skill is with Heavy Pistols? I'm going to assume this character is not RAW (Ways aren't RAW, unless I am mistaken) yet no Sensei Positive Quality, no Martial Arts? He's only got one blade, and it's some generic, off-the-shelf ceramic knife (probably from some factory in China).

His Contacts are all Fixers - nary a mention of a Clan. He speaks several languages, but none of them are Japanese. His Knowledge Skills pertain to mercenaries and politics  - which is fine, but he should have artistic and/or crafting knowledge/abilities to round himself out. His gear list reads like he's planning on blowing up entire buildings, and his commlink could be hacked by a middle-school student.

I'm not trying to say it's a bad build - I'm sure he's a very nice assassin/terrorist with mystically enhanced disguise and stealth. I'm just saying that a ninja doesn't have Bad Rep and Records on File as Qualities!

Infiltrator? Very nice. Ninja? No, not really.

Ways are optional rules.  So they're RAW, but may or may be used in any given game.  However if you do use them, there's explicit rules on how they work. They're as RAW as the martial arts rules in Arsenal which are optional as well.

Ways however aren't missions legal.

Ah, right. I misused RAW...I meant plain vanilla SR4A.

Of course, now I really want to build an actual ninja.

Oh, to be independently wealthy so that I had more time to waste!

Where do you refer all your ninja references to. Nowhere on the character sheet or anywhere else (and none of the characters have a background) it states, that the character is supposed to be a ninja. So why bothering about it?

My apologies for the use of the word ninja, it was meant in the coloquial rather than specific as someone who sneaks for a living  :o ...and yes, I'm aware that ninjas are very much more than that!!!

I'll remove the reference and hopefully all will be well :)

None of SwampFox's are exactly starting characters and have lots of karma but they might inspire someone down a path, ceramic knives from China and all  ;D

I'd like to offer up my wheelman/Smuggler Jackrabbit (http://www.coyotecode.net/profiler/view.php?id=10793) for the list, though I'm not sure what Way he would fall under, as well as Rattrap (http://www.coyotecode.net/profiler/view.php?id=10574) for the Silent Way, and Tenchi (http://www.coyotecode.net/profiler/view.php?id=8662) my Haruman Combat Monster for the Warrior's Way.  All at 400 BP+Karma.
Added for you :)  Is that The Dodger on Jackrabbit's contact list?
Nope, just another hacker using a similar handle.  And the reason he had that much nuyen was due to our crew getting pulled into a VERY dangerous situation.  Essentially Bogata went the way of Chicago, except WORSE.  My character managed to get an Apaloosa (as per WAR) out of the mission, which we survived.  It got trashed at a later date and our team decided that they had enough saved up to retire by that point.

In regards to Rattrap, he was more of an infiltrator/demolitions guy, as per the Maximal I named him for.  For my "ninja' build, you'd want Tenchi.

Added Kit & Kat to the athletes.  They are concept characters meant to be played as a pair, either one as an NPC, the player taking both or ideally two players running one each.  They are pretty much crippled by themselves so they aren't intended to be a model character for anyone looking for such a thing.

Ok, added two hacker adept types to the Artisan section...nobody seemed to want to comment on them so they are either dull or simply so amazing that no comments were necessary :)  That said, comments are always welcome, particularly if someone else wants to use the build as a basis for their own hacker adept

I'd post Suki/Talim/Hawatari from Pananagutan (http://forums.shadowrun4.com/index.php?topic=5111.0), but though she's roughly an Athlete's Way adept, a) she's also a Mystic Adept with limited magic, and b) she's way over 400 BP at the time of the story.
Title: Re: An Archive of Adepts - Walking the Ways
Post by: Aria on <10-10-12/0842:15>
400BPs is only the staple here because that's the default character gen figure.  I'm sure people are as interested in Prime Runners as ones just beginning :)

Post by: tblader on <12-30-12/1554:43>
I dont know if this is necessarily the place to ask this but I figured that it would be like asking the experts

My friend is starting a low power game (300 starting bp) and I want to make a B&E adept (pure adept, no aug or cyber) who is a bit obsessed with japanese culture and so styles himself as a ninja. How viable is bladed combat really? I dont mind him not being AMAZING but I want to at least be decent in combat
Title: Re: An Archive of Adepts - Walking the Ways
Post by: emsquared on <12-30-12/1650:24>
I think it would be derailing this thread to start discussing the viability of bladed combat or a 300 BP adept... why not start your own thread? Doesn't cost a thing.

But send me a link when you're done and I'll happily add you to the archive...low power builds are interesting because they are so difficult, hell I struggle to get what I want out of the standard 400 :D

Great!  I've not had as much time as I'd like to get some SR5 adepts out there for review so the more the merrier!  I am learning on the job what pitfalls are present in the new rules for adepts so I hope I'll have some useful builds up soon (ish)

Added Cam to the SR5 list.  If anyone wants to upgrade him to a 'normal runner' template then add 12 starting karma and spend 2 more points of adept powers.  5 pts have been spent on resources so you can spend another 5 karma on cash...

Festivale has been added to the archive, a mysad face and singer.  The mentor spirit could easily be swapped around for one of the others that offers a bonus to social skills.

Thanks! Like I said in the thread, Troll pics are hard to find, and harder still to find ones that aren't hideous looking. I saw that picture and it just screamed CZ ganger at me, which was the concept.

It's been a while since I put a new adept up here and with the release of Street Grimoire I hope there will be a few more upcoming.  For now, here's <<Silkie>> (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AnYw4d165IBNdGNpTjREVEJORnN0TDBRYjd0RGhuQ2c&usp=sharing) Street level social adept

She got hit by the nerf bat a bit with the reduction in the effectiveness of the Commanding Voice power from Stolen Souls but she seems to be working well in the game I'm running her in.

I really love this thread and all the ideas for adepts that it has, but I do have a question.

On the SR5 stuff, you say Prime Runner is Priority A 2x, but according to Page 64 of SR5, it's just some modifications with the normal Priority System. Did you confuse it with the "High Life" campaign setting described on page 356 of SR5? In it's description: "When using the Priotity Table, players should select twice from row A, once from row B, and twice from row C. There should be no Availability limit to the equipment the characters can acquire. This is
the time to open up and play with all the toys."

I only ask because I would like to try my hand at creating an adept or two to post here, and I just want to be clear which set of rules you want used.
Title: Re: An Archive of Adepts - Walking the Ways
Post by: Aria on <08-18-14/0843:56>
Yep, sounds like a minor confusion...I found that the modifications to the priority table lead to an unbalanced build, particularly for the street level game so I'm using the Street Scum and High Life modifications, I hadn't spotted the removal entirely of the availability cap so I'll modify my opening post, I haven't got round to making a Prime Runner adept yet (although I have a number of ideas floating around my brain :D)

Thanks! A

If so I have a few adept deckers I've updated since last played on another site.

It wasn't intended as such, it's a collection of adept builds for anyone to use/abuse as they see fit.  Some of the ones I've created are for pbp games on Dumpshock.  I'm considering running some pbp here on ShadowGrid in the near future too...

I would like to present Mikal (or substitute whatever name you want), a French Dwarf who follows the Beast Way and Embraces the teaching of his mentor Shark. I don't really have a background for him. He focuses a lot on close range, so you mostly have to sneak close enough to shred your enemies. It might not be the most optimized build, as I haven't had anybody critique it, but it's an option. He was built using the standard rules.

https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B4OmLwSn_Tx2ZnNkSVdBOWRHNDQ/

Right now it's a chummer5 file, so you need to download and load it into chummer5; if anyone has any idea how to convert it to something viewable in a web browser, I would appreciate it.

Edit:

Is it ok that it's not a reviewed and streamlined build? I figured this would just give a starting place and people can adjust as they want. Also, if you want me to write some sort of backstory, I can, but I figured people would take the concept and figure out their own.

No, it doesn't have to be optimised at all, they are mostly for inspiration and because I love collecting adepts :D

I can't read the chummer file though...is there a way of exporting it as text or an excel file or something?  Anyone?

I can give you an html file, but it still needs to be downloaded to look at it in something like chrome. Otherwise, it just looks like a ton of code.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4OmLwSn_Tx2Rm9vdmN0cDJwbms/edit?usp=sharing

I've tested it with downloading then opening it up using Windows Explorer (Defaults to chrome) and it shows as a nice sheet. Otherwise, I have no idea. If someone does have a way to export it to a spreadsheet, that would be much better. Or some way to share the html that it will automatically open up with all the code rendered into something actually readable.

Raphael Le(o)nardo the Dwarf Beast Way Adept is 0.25 points overspent.  You don't receive a half-point off; you receive a 50% discount.  Killing Hands, normally 0.5 points, becomes 0.25 points - not 0.

Otherwise, only two quibbles, both in the Knowledge Skills: "Hand to Hand Combat Techniques" can be rolled as a knowledge aspect of standard Unarmed Combat, using Logic instead of Agility; and 'High Threat Response' should be refined.  What part of HTR?  Their tactics, their SOP?  Would it be better off simply as Small Unit Tactics, or would it be better as Police and Security Procedures?

Killing Hands is free from Shark Mentor Spirit. So, not overspent there.

I suppose that part of Hand to Hand is true, I was trying to figure out something that would make sense for him. He didn't come from a corp, he doesn't have a lot of formal training, all he has is a Criminal SIN and his mentor spirit to guide him. What would you suggest to replace that with?

I didn't realize HTR needed to be refined. I was thinking more along the lines of what kind of response times they would have for the classes of areas. This guy is a, well obviously a Shadowrunner, but a Criminal who should know that sort of thing. Any other security type knowledge skills you can think of? If so, that's probably something for Raphael would/should know.

You might want to indicate that somewhere, then - because every GM I know would look at the character and wonder why you're getting these three things for half off, and that one for free.  More information, or at least footnotes or something, is always a good thing.

As for the HTR stuff, just take exactly that: 'Police and Security Response Times'.  A GM should allow you to roll that almost any time there's a concern as to how long you should have - or have left ...

I have another adept if you're interested. I used the High Life rules with a couple of tweaks. First, I had Suprathyroid Gland and Improved Reflexes stack. I wasn't sure it would be allowable, but a couple of people on here would probably allow it as a houserule. Second, I went a bit crazy with contacts. I figured that a High Life runner would have been around long enough to acquire some really high level contacts. You can always bump it down if you want to. Not so much of a tweak, but damn do Trolls have expensive Lifestyles. I mean, I would think a High Life runner would earn a lot of nuyen, because he better hope he does or he's gonna be broke paying rent.

Here's the link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1YDX8D_eP62gTX8g9JcTyn-255IVv2QlwfmGZOWPfUQQ/edit?usp=sharing

This is Muscle, the Troll Burnout Way Adept. You need muscle? He can bring it. He can bring a lot of it, but not much else. He isn't big on being social, and he lives to hit (and usually kill) things.

I think you really want to put up the normal build, as the lack of attributes seems to be quite crippling for her physical abilities. Having more attribute points to play with would allow you to get a bonus to AGI with Improved Physical Attribute instead of one of the other options.

One should maybe ask how Nerve Strike is supposed to work against Full Body Armor or other similar means of protection at a given table, but other than that I think the power is a really sweet option for adepts.

Added an AR Hacker adept to the mix.  Still a WIP but there should be sufficient inspiration there if anyone wants to have a go at a similar build - and I'd like to see the results!  I make no pretence about being a character optimiser, I just enjoy making adepts  ;D

A full runner Nerve Strike adept is underway too...just seeing where I can squeeze out some more agility without resorting to muscle toners  :P

Try going for Improved Physical Attribute AGI 1 and Attribute Boost AGI 2. It should put you close to or at augmented maximum often enough while providing a solid base and often enough neglibible drain.

Good build, just a couple of minor things I picked up, but not actual mistakes.  First, your native language is english and you have sperethial at 3, I noticed on the life modules for people from Tir they have that reversed.  Second, at first I thought 5 charisma was pretty high for someone with only a little etiquette, but then I thought, hey, that is only average for the elf, so that works fine.  I like that she isn't min/maxed to the max, I would only change around the language skill.

High Pain Threshold
Quick Heal

Others?

I don't think there's anything specific in SR5, there might be a martial art style in R&G?

I've always tended to lump dance under gymnastics and saved performance for singing, painting etc...

Other than that I don't really know enough about the style  :o

Go watch the old 'Drunken Master' movies starring Jackie Chan.  Basic premise: barely-capable kung fu guy drinks, gets drunk, and his Kung Fu becomes unstoppable, but only for as long as he's thoroughly soused.

Since it's a 'must drink to perform' sort of thing, there isn't anything in SR that will really let you do it.  Boosted Attributes, maybe, and potentially a geas for all your powers - but the old 'power point cost reduction' of a geas doesn't exist in SR5, so it's really hamstringing yourself.

Not quite the same thing, but you could create a drug that boost stuff how you want it.  It would boost you and you could just roleplay that you can't fight very well without it.  Heck, if you have a cool GM, you could probably revolve a small campaign around said drug.  Just spitballing.

Quick question for those that are browsing this archive occasionally...is there a 'type' of adept you'd like to see?  Most are Hi Agi, Lo Str characters so at the very least I will try and make one or two that branch away from that.  I also don't have a classic gunslinger adept for SR5 which I think needs to be remedied!

Karma-wise, you mean?  1000 at creation, and roughly 6000 since, due to how we do contacts and karma; the contacts cost a LOT more karma than they do in straight SR, and you have to pay for it all.  I got the chance to put her into Chummer5, which is most of what you're seeing, but Chummer5 doesn't do karma discounts properly like with Neural Stimulators, Adept Linguistics, and such things, especially scattered across several editions.  Calling it 1000 + 6000 would probably not be too far off the mark,

Title: Re: An Archive of Adepts - Walking the Ways
Post by: BrysenBlue on <06-12-16/1627:16>
This is my current character (and namesake). One of the players in the group was trying to talk the other players out of playing anything other than an ordinary human and said Surges were completely unplayable because they were ostracized like mutants in Marvel. I didn't like it (since I was pretty sure he had not even read a lot of the setting material), so I made Brysen Blue.

Brysen is a parody take on the 2075 equivalent of "Social Justice Warrior (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vvc1nxlJb-o)", he is constantly harping on about Blue Oppression and constantly finds a way to make EVERYTHING about race or predigest when there obviously is none. Because everyone was so apprehensive to make their first characters I decided to pick a neash that wouldn't impose on other character choices. So I made him as an anti-mage specialist. He has a transforming smartgun he calls Felicity that is his best (and only friend); who is a heavily modified Bust-a-Move drone.

Despite starting out as a joke, the character has proven to be really successful and I am surprised at how easy it is to manipulate people who are not racist and do not WANT to be seen as a racist. Its actually really helped us out. Despite his low social skills, he has been a great face and comes off a fair bit like a Venture Bros character where he owns his failure and short-comings and it (ironically) makes him more endearing than insufferable.

I know a lot of folks talk up their own characters, but Brysen is a real winner. He was basically PC Principle from South Park before PC Principal had even been introduced into the show. A couple of players insisted I base a comic book off his adventures in the shadows (much to my surprise).

This is his back story:
Shortly following his birth Brysen Blue was 'liberated' from the Xavior Foundation by a team of Shadowrunners in the employ of the North American branch of Yamatetsu.

For the first several years of his life he was kept in iscolation and endured daily testing and analysis. Iscolated from other children Brysen retreated into fantasy.

At age 11, Yamatetsu transitioned into the Evo Corporation and a number of the personel responsible for Brysen's care were we reassigned, leaving an opening in their security. An opening that would be exploited by a team of Elven Espionage agents in the employ of the Xavior Foundation.

However, during his relocation an argument broke out between the running crew regarding Brysen's welfare which resulted in the  death of three of the four runners and Bysen being delievered into the care of an orphanage.

Due to his unusual appearence Brysen was never adopted, spending most of his time day dreaming and searching (and inventing) a cultural identity of his own; a veil for the deep feelings of loneliness and iscolation that occupy his thoughts daily.

Unclaimed and SINless, Brysen was forced into a life in the shadows where he makes a living dealing with problem spellcasters.
His current character sheet is attached. His "way" is the "Way of Batman," basically he started with low skills, keeps the fact he is a karate master a bit of a secret (since its a joke that he is a Karate Master) and no real "projection" powers. So basically, he (and me as a player) had to dip into a bit of everything wherever I could. I ended up covering his blind-spots with drones that do his perception for him. As the campaign has continued on I have found he has depended more and more on drones to make up for his lack of skills. Even retooling an Aztec Crawler so he can wear it like a backpack (a bit like Gear out of Static Shock if anyone knows the reference). He's by no means a "rigger" though or a decker, and if they can bust the fire wall he is actually quite vulnerable to drones.

Truthfully, most of what Brysen does is talk. He is a really bad face, but he has a keen intuition and usually lays down support or supressive fire during combat. He is the guy that recovers downed allies and makes trick shots. Its true he would be more "mechanically effective" as a Mystic Adept so he could also take Counter Spelling, but this was my first character and I needed the money for gear. Since I wanted a cool toy robot sidekick that could transform into a gun when needed.

Interesting.  As a GM, I would definitely not allow both the Melanin Control power and give you points for the Striking Skin / Unusual Hair NQs, since you can change them any time you want, though if your GM allows it, more power to ya.

It has been a long time since I've put an update here as the platform has been unstable for a while...but I have been maintaining the archive and updating some of the old adepts as new qualities, powers etc have become available.  It can now be found here:
