Title: Ridebacks
Post by: Kylen on <03-22-12/1703:19>
Figure I'd drop it in here for discussion/work while it is on my mind: Ridebacks. For those who don't know, a Rideback is a motorcycle type vehicle that can switch between 'cycle' mode, and a walker like mode.

A sports based Rideback, meant for road racing.  (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uhAVIQRB_8Y/SecBIjJnafI/AAAAAAAAGJs/Fj-QvbHldzQ/s400/Rideback_1.jpg)

I know how to MODIFY a bike to become one of these-ish, but I was wondering what the cost would be simply to have it be it's own vehicle. Makes me want creation rules.

Take an existing bike, slap the modification from Aresenal onto it. Knock off a percentage, run it past the GM... Call it a new model.

I got one past my GM and into game as a heavily modded bike that had been built for a merc group.  The scout force rode them and in anthro mode they had high enough pilot and autosofts to act as independent force multipliers. (arm mounted LMG or heavily modded grenade launcher makes for a good weapon for one of these).  I built it entirely within points by modifying a thundercloud contrail to the limits without overmodding.

Yep, Walker Mode + Stock Bike = Motorslave. Pretty simple, really.

Also, mod the armor on the Rideback as high as possible, add a Rigger Cocoon, then have the Rigger jump into it while he's piloting it. Vehicle Armor + Rigger Cocoon + Worn Armor, and he can fit anywhere a Troll can... anywhere an Ork can if he's a Dwarf. ;)

Toying around with the idea, I arrive at a machine that I'd peg at 35,000¥ all told. Its based on giving the Thundercloud Contrail a set of arms, legs, and a weapon hardpoint. Throw in some GM Fiat/Special Equipment to allow it too switch between wheels and walker mode.

This results is a mecha pretty similar to the motorslaves of Bubblegum Crisis or Mospeda... I'm probably dating myself with those anime references. But Shadowrun has never really included mecha, despite the fact that numerous mecha series ahve had their roots in the same cyberpunk sources as SR. Bubblegum Crisis, Appleseed, Ghost in the Shell and so forth... I see a lot of influences between the two, but I'd say adding transforming robot motorcycles is a bit too far for standard Shadowrun. But hey, if you're group thinks it'll be fun rock on.

Here's what I've put togther, just for fun:

The Thundercloud Zephyr Motorslave is intended for urban combat situtations. Combining the sheer  speed of a Racing Bike with the versitility of a fully-humanoid Anthroform Drone. The vehicle requires extensive training for its operator, offers minimal protection, and is not very  effiecint for corporate or governemt budgets. It has proven incredibly popular in trid  productions and VR games.

Name: Thundercloud Zephyr Motorslave
Category: Anthroform (Bike)
Handling: 2 (1) Accel: 10/20 (20/40) Speed: 90 (180) Device: 3
Pilot: 3 Body: 6 Armor: 4 Sensor: 1 (Signal: 5)
Firewall: 3 Signal: 3 Response: 3 System: 3
Avail: 12F Cost: 35,000¥ Slots: 10 (1 Remaining)

The Sandstorm Motorslave is intended to fulfill the same roll as the Zephyr Motorslave, but with an emphasis on rural patrols and wilderness search-and-rescue. The Sandstorm only has one fully functional arm, the left "arm" being little more than a flexible weapon mount. Again, the complex training needed to pilot the vehicle and its high cost have resulted in poor sales.

I'd point out the Horseman PMV already converts from a motorcycle-style mode to an upright "standing" mode. Plus it can come with fold-out arms.

One fold-out arm. Still, saves having to mod one of them on.
