Title: (Recruitment) Sun and Shade
Post by: SeriousOne338 on <03-06-12/1406:15>
So I've been trying to get in on a game for a week or so, with little success. So instead of just looking from the other side of the glass I decided to run one while I wait, not sure if I need an OK by some higher power (admin).

So let me start here:

The setting is going to start in Seattle 2072, there has been a marked upswing in some hostilities between UCAS boarder and the Salish over the islands in pugetsound. A call has gone out to UCAS army reserves and the Salish forces have been gather forces as well. Corporate interests in Seattle have been toned down due to the rising hostiles. The now reasonably unemployed runners have begun the usual when theres not a lot of work drinking, gambling and avoiding the pressgangs from the UCAS army offering free SINs for service if hostilities start.
So in short your runners are out of work and hiding from the pressgangs. Drinking in a little known tavern in the Everett Slums know as the Happy Fat Man. Swilling an ale thats gone a little flat at the bar, watching the vid traffic on an old screen all thats on is the news. The bar is manned by an old bartender, a fat elf known as Porter. Being a regular here Porter grunts and nudges your mug flicking his eyes at a back table shaded from view by old patched curtain. Work its a simple word but porters known for saying little.

So thats the start, anyone interested please follow the fallowing rules (stolen from Chicago Depths because they make sense)

Characters should be made with 400BP 350 BP with a maximum of 175 of those points spent on regular attributes (magic and edge aren't included in this cap, natch.) Gear will be limited to availability 8 (the restricted gear quality will allow for one item of up to avail 16. As normal, you can take it up to 3 times,) and starting cash will be limited to 200,000 nuyen. All sourcebooks are open for your use (but be ready to answer questions on some rules).  Lifestyle costs will cover most mundane items like flashlights and such.  Most any unrestricted item whose cost is 10% of your lifestyle or less can reasonably be considered to be in your possession as part of your normal living situation.  For instance, you pay 1000 bux a month for rent and such, then common programs costing less than 100 nuyen can just be assumed Sorry Deckers the teahnomancers have spoken.  No sweat.  You need credsicks, RFID tags, zip ties, mapsofts, a bottom-shelf comlink with a garbage OS, whatever.  That's all covered by lifestyle.  Finally, in addition to whatever other contacts you pick up on creation, you'll all start with the same 3/3 bartender/fixer/fence contact, Porter.

Also other notes: These characters need to be ready to move so characters with solid roots in Seattle and cant move arent going to happy with this campaign. Smugglers, Pirates, Spies, Mercs thats who Im looking for, throw in mages and adepts to round out the lot.

Personally, Im not big into the matrix but if you want to run a decker go for it just be ready to answer questions.

PS: Hint: Swimming, and Pilot WaterCraft might be a good Idea.

So who's in?

Current Players:

Sichr - Ramirez (ex-Ganger)
bangbangtequila - JaX@77@X
Kayzie - As a Doc (no name yet)
All4BigGuns Shinobi (mage)
momothefiddler Alonzo Rivera (Adept)

I think I will hold at 5 players for the time being, please finish writing up Character sheets &  backgrounds today or tomorrow. Also if you want to refine your characters at all before we begin. The Campaign will start as an island hoping adventure.

Sorry, but in my opinion, such low build points and the lowering of availability and resource caps don't "make sense" or sound remotely enjoyable to me. Maybe you'll hook a few people, and good luck to you in that, but I need at minimum base core book point values--though the all sourcebooks open is refreshing to see considering the Hater-Ade thrown about by some people on the War! book.

I have this chararacter built once for street gangs level game, I cosider him retired, but IMO i can improve/downgrade it a bit and make it work. What do you think?

I would love to play this as a technomancer mainline Rigger/back-up hacker (I won't be hacking everyone's smartgun system as my main offence, but I will thread a lot and use the Matrix as a secondary offensive technique). Ideally, however, you'd at least through some Karma in on top of the 350 BP to help us out. Even as little as 20 would give the extra plus needed to make BP heavy builds like Combat Mages and Technomancers the Initiation/Submersion they need to be viable.

I'll drop my background, and see what you think. Bear in mind I'm modifying a hacker character I wrote up not too long ago that I've wanted to use for a bit now.

JaX@77@X
Male
Elf
Hacker, Back-Up Rigger
JaX is neither big nor small, sitting at 5'10" and 158 lbs, but he stands out as a pasty caucasian in the middle of Hong kong. What noteworthiness he loses in stature, he makes up for in pale, gaunt, unhealthy pallor. He doesn't sleep much, and when he does it's sitting in a chair auto-logged from fatigue, surrounded by empty soy-caf cups and takeout wrappers. This lifestyle based around the latest in health and nutrition studies shows, as his muscles are wirey, his ribs poke at his skin, and his skin carries the lovely shade of pearls. That said, he still has the natural looks and swagger of an Elf, and while fairly distracted and meek in the real world, he always gets a little bit more confident when he has a buzzing auto-drones loaded with exploding rounds hovering behind him.

The fairly young elf wears a leather trenchcoat and red-tinted goggles, with greasy black hair that stays out of his eyes seemingly of its own accord. His hands are gloved, and a weightey revolver graces his hip, styled after none other then Guts Gardener, Alien Menace's own sub-ether blaster. Despite this semi-steampunk retro-look, he's more prone to drop smoke and bolt then he is to stick up for himself in a fight, and despite being none too shabby with a gun, he knows he's got neither the skill, the 'ware, nor the balls to be a street-sam.

Jax loves cracking. Plain and simple, he lives for what he does, and no matter how much it hurts or how close to a BlackHammer wipeout he comes, he'll always come back for more. He cracks nodes for money, he cracks them for new programs to drop on the market early, the latest games and trid flicks to leak for higher 'trix-cred, and sometimes, just to prove he can. He doesn't much like real people, with only a few friends he's met face to face, but he maintains a network of contacts via the Matrix that are as close as family. Jax is not an overly vengeful person, but people who take advantage of him or his friends tend to find bad things happen. Spammers get a hold of their 'Link digits, Taxi companies block their calls, their SIN can never get approved for a loan, etc. He never says no to a showdown of skill in VR sims, or even better a display of whose the better hacker, but he's not so dumb as to advertise what he does unless there's a damned fine getaway trail of trick-filled nodes awaiting his hasty exit.

Jack Sperethiel was born in the UCAS, 2050, to the troubled and turbulent city of San Fran Cisco, right smack-dab in the middle of the reign of General Saito, back in the good old days when he answered to the JIS, to a pair of Elves who found comfort and love in each other in the middle of a xenophobic and hateful city, run by worse then exploiting militant rulers. Of course, come 2061 and Saito's seizure of the JIS forces running San Fran as his own personal troops, the inevitable furthering of metahuman restrictions and abuse drove the Sythriel line out of CalFree, and straight over the ocean into Europe. Of course, with all the destabilization and militant tensions rocking that part of the world in the wake of the Eurowars and Nightwraith's definitive but certainly unpleasant resolution, they kept on the move, and eventually wound up in Tr Tairngire, where the Elven superiority had been deeply ingrained in everything from politics to the private sector, and the hardworking and long abused and neglected pair of parents found the whole thing a glorious relief from the stress and fear of humanity. Jack, however, did not. The racially segregated lifestyle of the elven nation was stifling, and his voraciously technological appetites were hard to satiate in a land where spirituality and newly formed "ancient" traditions took precedence. Jack went underground, to the black market tech-world, and picked up the best hot-sim jailbroken module he could find, and delved the worlds of the Matrix with a vigour and recklessness managed only by the arrogance of youth.he discovered BTLs, and his already reclusive life became one devoted to the electrodrug and finding better ways of running them, granted with little success - despite his fervent desire, he would never be more then a sub-par slicer. His parents despised the habits they saw forming, and through punishment, confiscation, and finally a complete severing of ties, they tried to drive him off his drug of choice. They failed, and he left, cursing the glitched bastards as he wandered the less repressive parts of western Europe, trying more BTLs then his brain would have liked.

On the day of The Crash 2.0, things changed, as a Hot-Simmed Jack frantically scanning the frequently illegal nodes he always searched for a fix got abruptly cut off from his mind. He woke up a three days later in a beeping, sterile white room filled with computers and monitors displaying the fact that he was alive. They couldn't show the doctors the extent of the rift that had seemingly opened up his brain to the fires of hell, as the most intense, vision-blurring headache of his 16 years of life wracked him. He was practically thrown out after he woke up, however, with a bottle of percocets for the pain, to open the bed up for another Crash-victim. He wrote it off as the migraine, but the whole cab ride back to his ruddy little apartment, he swore he heard voices. Jack got home and plugged in his emergency chip - to drown out the pain - and passed out. He woke up six hours later, with dried blood running from his nose to the caked on patty of it covering the right side of his face. Looking in that mirror, at the pale, wasted frame, ribs poking out, lips cracked and red-rimmed eyes framed by the sort of bags he might have packed for a two week trip, he realized what he was, why his parents had bailed. He was a junkie. more then that, he was the worst kind of junkie - one who did it out of pure mental weakness. A drug addict can tell you, it isn't just the mind that needs the hit, in fact that desire is put there and reinforced biochemically by a physical need for his drug, and driven too deep to ignore by the wracking effects of withdrawal. BTLs, however, just let you be what you wished you were. He was done. No more of this drivelling, beggar of a weakling, sucking the world of it's generosity and burdening it with a useless waste.
And...of course, would it be possible to use Karmagen for character creation? if yoes, what would be the karma limit (AFB now so i cannot check RC for the math)

Sorry but its the BP method I'm not too big on the karma creation route.

Interesting, I'd need to see the sheet. But the karma will be given in game the lower point set up makes you really look into what your making.

The only thing is, as a Technomancer "programs" cost BP, instead of Nuyen. So while a Hacker would get Browse for what, 100 x rating if not free with his lifestyle, a technomancer would need to spend 1 x Rating BP to learn a complex form. At rating 6, that makes 6 bp for the Technomancer vs 0.12 bp for the hacker...

Ah well. I'll do what I can, but I may ask for some free non-restricted complex forms to round out my repertoire, if you don't mind.

I've decided to not, simply because I don't much like such a restrictive creation process. All the best, and happy gaming.

I honestly wouldn't recommend GMing a 350 bp "mercenary level" game if you're just doing it to kill time.

Lowered starts are about longer games.  Also about keeping people from killing their way through every problem, but that's not likely to be too much of an issue when the setup involves two military factions on high alert.  ;)

Even this kind of Low powered run can be fu, if you dont mind playing sewer rats, wel I have to say my interrest in this is also on decline

Ok after some consideration and people complaining I've changed the rules to match more of a standard character construction. The gear is still limited because I don't want people packing enough explosives to start a war.

So far what I can tell I might have: A ganger, hacker/rigger and Technomancer. I want to at least 4 runners or more before I start.

The gear restriction is still too restrictive in my opinion, as to me it simply isn't fun for any restriction that is worse than base character creation rules in the core rulebook. The fun of different restriction levels comes in when what can be acquired and the number of BP is increased rather than decreased (at least fun for anyone other than the GM).

Well in order to get a game started I throw the gear rule as well now its basic character creation.

8 is fairly standard for lower power campaigns. You can still get the gear you need to get by, but most ware and foci will be at a point lower than normal. In the long run (which is what a low starting game is designed for), one point is not a big deal. It's one die or 1/3 of a hit.

A slightly different approach is 9. It lets characters get some rating 2 gear (muscle toners for instance) if they get it second hand. Depending on how you play second hand ware, there may be no drawback in getting second hand alphaware and calling it a day in which case there is no real point in the limitation.

The real issue here is: Why are you limiting the availability?

If it's only to restrict player access, then it really just shows that you're not a very experienced GM. You'd probably be better off running a normal game and vetoing any items that you don't feel fit in your game (or at least having a serious discussion with the player).

That said, there are times when it works out well. The main reason I often use it are for:
A.) Beginning players. So many options to choose from, restricting it can really help them focus on their character and cut out the clutter. It also gives them a better feel for the edge that different levels of ware provide. Rolling 4(5) agility + 5 Pistols skill is only ten dice (12 with smartlink) and one comes from their ware. Starting in a normal game they can easily be throwing 17 to 18 dice and pulling out what comes from ware can be disorienting in the least. Especially so for players that have only played simpler systems before or never RPed at all.

B.) Beginning runners. The standard rules assume that the characters are green around the gills but have at least been in the biz a bit. If the goal is to actually simulate the run being the first time they're going out in the shadows, restricting access can give a better beginner feel and helps scale things down for beginner level runs as well. This of course assumes that the GM is good enough to scale down encounters to a proper level so that they aren't one sided PC death trains.

Some players won't like playing with less points. It doesn't mean that your concept is wrong/bad, just that it doesn't suit them. Usually these people just aren't interested in growing from sewer rats and want to start out as movers and shakers.

OK  I'm looking for players, please if you want to play just make a character and post it or PM me. If you want to complain about the rules please stop posting everyone it's possible to build a character at 350pts, and limited gear availability, I KNOW I'VE DONE IT! so get over it. Stop complaining and offering advice I have a plan I know what I want to run your not helping, if you don't want to play don't. Other wise post a character, and save some time. I AM NOT CHANGING THE RULES ANYMORE!

With this, I'll see about putting something together. How are you with the Magic stuff, as I haven't really messed with it much since SR3, and was considering going that route.

More thinking mage than adept, but may end up dropping the magic altogether since being dissatisfied with the builds is pretty much why I've stayed away from Magic for so long.

May consider mystic adept assuming you use SR4A rather than SR4 + FAQ since the latter pretty much makes mystic adept worthless.

I pretty well have access to the vast majority of books taking into account, both mine and my roommate's SR book collections. At present, the only spell I've got listed that isn't in the core book is the Slow spell out of War!.

I'd like to join. I've only played Shadowrun once, but it was quite fun. I'm interested in playing an adept or magician (probably adept since there's already a magician app).

Working on a character to submit now.

Go for it, and I think that will make the team.

Ok everyone round out your characters any changes you want to make reworked gear or the like. I'd like to see backgrounds on them why they'd work the shadows if they have SINs excreta...

Alonzo Rivera remembers nothing before he awoke in the sewer one night. All sorts of information ran through his head, confusing him. Polaris a nord. Смерть крышка имеет большое выше тела плодоношения землю шляпки от пяти до пятнадцати см в диаметре. Die Nase und Wangenknochen sind am schwersten zu verschleiern. Frightened and confused, he found a dark hole and hid until he was able to calm down. As time went on, he discovered impressive abilities and used them to survive in the complex and filthy depths. By the time he discovered the Overworld, he'd gathered some slight social skills from observing those few (meta)humans who went by, generally fleeing or hiding, and had taken a name from on of the three IDs he'd found on his person. That one was soon disposed of in the process of learning about law enforcement, but since then he's become a rather efficient mercenary, if an unusually short one who enjoys rat meat.

== Description ==
Short and stocky like most dwarves, Alonzo's wide shoulders belie his quick movements. He has a short black moustache and goatee and his hair is rarely longer than shoulder-length. His eyes are constantly darting back and forth, even during a conversation, and he seems to shrink to an even smaller size when near strangers. He tends to long periods of absolute stillness punctuated by short, quick movements.

My mage is rather simple. She was--for most of her life--living in Japan and learning to use her Awakened abilities while living with her parents. She came to Seattle to find her cousin whom she hadn't heard from since the Arcology incident (the character I'm playing in cabo_setek's PbP game), and ended up deciding to give the Shadows a shot after learning just how useful most runner teams consider a mage/shaman.

I'm still working on tweaking the character sheet, but I have gotten the knowledge skills pinned down at this point (I had to find her old SR3 character sheet so I could get the right ones).

Got it, though one question you have flight as a skill does that mean Pilot Aircraft or do you know how to fly? :o

Characters built with Chummer that take Athletics skill group will get the Flight skill even though they can't really use it (though I think there might be gear that allows use of it, but I'm not sure where).

Here is the best sheet I could come up with. Not that happy with it, but I can't quite pinpoint my problem with it.

I will state it again I am looking for more like Mercenary people that can travel, are prepare to go into situations that are out side the city, perhaps even using aircraft, boats, overland hikes.....

Ahh, I was thinking that some could need to get a ride from the rest. All right then. Can't really come up with a good mage for that, but I could toss in a former soldier (well she thinks former  ;)) or a rigger

both would work, if you do the solider you could be in the shadows running from the recruiters.

No, only direction for flying would be ...downwards ;)

Either could work. The rigger however would need an aircraft vehicle supplied should the need arise. Those things are just way too expensive for chargen these days (one thing I miss from SR3--getting 1 million nuyen for 30 BP). Haven't come up with a background on the rigger, and background info on the soldier/operative needs to be away from the prying eyes of the other players.

you could just need to spend a lot of points: Born Rich + In Debt + 250,000 and you get close to affordability... for one chopper

but it would suck to try and pay that off. Add an AA and your investment would really really suck. I say go for a boat (larger)

Wait a day to see what happens.

They could use someone who can do transport, the rest look like great combat experts and they have a healer so.... not sure what to say.

SURGE for metagenetic improvement to agility. It increased my natural maximum and augmented maximum.  It went from 7(10) to 8(12)

I may be better with guns, but I'm all in all more of a generic combatant, but a 12 agility kinda does that with combat and stealth skills.

You're a metagenically improved elf with 6 points (and a specialty) in pistols. I think you covering the weapons expert side of things takes it.

I don't know. I'm playing my technomancer in another game now, and I have no interest in a mage or a mundane hacker/rigger. Face characters are just silly to me, because I can usually have my Face skills be great as a sidenote. I will think, but realistically, the only spot I'd really be after is wrapped up by a character with an almost equal agility score. (I'd probably cap it out with Genetic Heritage (Optimization) and Exceptional Attribute, bringing my Augmented Max up to 15, rating 3 Synaptic Boosters, and have a pitiful remainder in gear. *shrug* as I said, I have to think, though if you'd rather just find someone else I understand. I'm a little behind as I had written the game off a while ago.

Looking at the street name listed for you on the OOC discussion thread, it looks like you had a hacker-type in (at least that's what I'd imagine going by the leet-speak in the name). Cutting you out would leave us without a hacker if this is the case, but if that is what you really want, from my experience, that's the easiest for a GM to give a little back-up here and there on. Heck, that's normally what I do when I run a game, since I've rarely had a hacker put before me by a player.

Pardon my jumping in--I'm trying to learn from watching--but I don't think these qualities work, unless I'm missing something. Class III SURGE requires at least 30 BP of positive metagenetic qualities and 15 negative; you've got the negatives, but the only positive is the agility improvement, leaving you 10 BP shy. Also, you've got 35 BP of non-metagenetic negative qualities, and 20 BP of metegenetic ones; since you've got more than the 15 required by the SURGE, those extra 5 count towards the 35 BP cap.

As I read the rules, I think you need to spend at least 10 more BP on positive metagenetics, and you're over-budget on your negatives.

I see your point let me think on this, the characters seem to have they're own overriding problems and the group would self destruct.

OK after reading through all the characters I’ve come to an understanding, almost all the characters are going to fail to work as a group. I do not like the abundant use of amnesia this is going to cause unknown amounts of trouble. A single player using it is ok but two combined with the other flaws are going to work against the group. SO here is what I am asking over the next week please re-write your characters, and tone down the craziness. I’m not trying to be mean but I want the game to work the players to have fun and all the characters to survive and not going into a gun fight halfway throw amongst themselves.

So here is want I want to see I am looking for mercenaries, and by that I mean the people who can operate out side of urban environments. I'm not saying most runners would not do but this is the relativity remember Johnson's Hire for results not because your a crazy guy with an interesting past.

There are roles that need to be filled:
-Transport (Sichr/Ramirez might do for now)
-Fire Support
-Demo/Engineer
-Communications
-Doc (Kayzie/ Micky would work perfect for this role)

Sorry for this but I think with the characters we have right now the run would end in a gun fight between players and no one would be happy.

I did just notice that, never worked with surge characters yet still reading on the rules. That being said All4BigGuns, you need to rework that part of your sheet.

Reading the Changeling section of Runner's Companion more thoroughly, I discovered that while yes, I do need to rework to get more positive metagenetics. The negatives are within the rules.  The base SURGE quality itself is stated to count toward the limit of positives, but the metagenetics it unlocks are implicitly stated to not count toward the limit.
Depending on the level taken, the character must choose a
number of Positive and Negative Metagenetic qualities (p. 110),
though gamemasters may chose to take on Negative Metagenetic
qualitiy selection to ensure balance. Metagenetic qualities chosen
in this fashion do not count toward the 35 BP cap on qualities,
as
long as they remain within the totals defined by the Changeling
quality. If the player chooses Metagenetic qualities with a total BP
value greater than the given thresholds, the excess cost or bonus
BP count toward the characters normal limits for qualities.
The next section in coupling with the prior should put me well within the limits considering that SURGE and full Restricted Gears like that only come to 30 BP (since the quoted section of Runner's Companion says that the metagenetics don't count toward the limit, I'm within the limit). All this said, I almost agreed with that guy, but then I read more carefully and found that line which states that they don't count.
After a metatype is chosen, transforming the character into
a changeling is as simple as choosing one of the 3 levels of the
Changeling Positive quality (next column). This quality counts
towards the characters limit of Positive qualities
Honestly, I think SURGE III is a little crazy. The amount of genetic Yahtzee involved in surviving such a change makes the odds of being a magician look like a coin toss. Of course a solid RP justification (You happened to crash your car in the middle of Howling Cayote's famous great ritual, sure. If you sneezed on some pixie dust one day, I wouldn't bite...)

As a question, are you providing any free non-determined contact points? IE, Charisma x 2 or Charisma + Intuition BP to be spent filling out our roster, or should I be setting aside a number of BP to ensure my smuggling ring is effective?

Ok, well I've thought up a concept I like, based off an Elven smuggler. He will be a primary combatant, partially fulfilling the fire support role (I can only assume that we must all be competently able to contribute there, but he will have some serious firepower), partially fulfilling Demolitions, and be competently able to provide some needed social ability and supplies (I'll be tying in a group contact as his smuggling operation, able to provide weapons and armour that "fell off the truck" to those who can pay. No freebies, but he'll have a very valuable resource to provide the team and possibly to apply to trades).

If anyone would like to tie in our backgrounds and characters, please send me a message or contact me by email/gtalk at bangbangtequilla@gmail.com
I try to be online most of the time.

Yurislav Volken
Male Elf (SURGEd II*)
Gun Runner
*Maybe. I'm going to try to avoid it, but we'll see.

A citizen of the Kisiov region, Yuri stands tall at 6'2" with a slim build of 185 lbs. He keeps his jet black hair closely trimmed to a slight peak in the center along his scalp, and a pair of black auto-tinting glasses concealing his eyes. He has high cheekbones and the semi-sunken look standard among his race, though the natural handsomeness is marred slightly by a jagged two-pronged scar running from the corner of his left eye down to his jawline - a souvenir of his short term foray into the realm of Biodrones. He wears a simple outfit of ballistic fabrics and specialist gear necessary for his trade, concealed under a middle-class coat. Everything about him, from his styled hair to his neatly polished shoes speaks of efficiency and function, an air he affects to promote confidence in his clients.

Sheet to come

Honestly, SURGE didn't happen until the year of the comet, and different people expressed in different ways. I haven't heard of anyone dying from their SURGE transformation (and nothing in the character I created--and now am reworking a bit to get rid of Amnesia, though there will likely still be some portions she doesn't remember just not the entire past--that would be worse than the goblinization into troll that people went through and survived during the Awakening).

Even so, you need a serious magical trigger to cause SURGE. As for death, the first two lines of the description of class III SURGE in the Runner's Companion, page 58:
"Class Three SURGE is categorized by the most severe and
radical mutations, sometimes leading to the death of the victim"

Also page 74, under SURGE in play -> Metamorphosis:
"There is a very real risk of death during the transformation
process (the metagenes responsible are damaged and mutated
DNA after all) and characters may require hospitalization for a
number of weeks following SURGE"

A quote from a character contained in Runner's Companion, page 58 again, by Traveller Jones:
"I got caught in a manastorm outside Sydney back in 2067. Suddenly,
the hacker hit the concrete and started convulsing, blood spitting
out of all her orifices, tissue stretching and rupturing, some seriously
crazy shit. We thought wed stumbled on some bioweapon or
something. Fortunately for hackhead, the spellslinger tagged it as
SURGE before we got round to putting her out of her misery. Id seen
Goblinization on the trid before, but, omae, this shit was freaky."

So you should write the incredibly traumatic and insanely life-altering event that is having your genetic fabric suddenly change itself and completely redesign your physiology within a few minutes into your past. It may even have caused Amnesia. Having it be "no big deal" spells out a "metagenic improvement sure is a great way to max my agility" line of thought, especially combined with the basically free magic resistance that is Astral Hazing and the joke of a penalty in Extravagant Eyes. I'm not trying to attack you, just pointing out that this is a pretty common min-max build.

Or they just SURGEd when the comet passed by. Anyone old enough to be running in the current timeline would have been alive then. As to Astral Hazing, the way I view it, would be that buff and healing spells cast on me would be fubared while offensive spells against me would inexplicably be more powerful. With Extravagant Eyes, well, the whole point of it is that someone with it is more identifiable--the Extravagant Eyes being the distinctive part of the automatic Distinctive Style.

You've got 20 BP of negative metagenetics (Astral Hazing is 10, while Extravagant Eyes and Mood Hair are both 5), which means that 5 of those BP count towards your cap. Amnesia (10), Judas (10), Records on File (10), and SINner (5) add up to 35, so you're 5 BP over the limit.

Okay, finally, final attempt at posting a character sheet.
...
== Qualities ==
Amnesia (Past)
Astral Hazing (non-Awakened)
Changeling (Class III SURGE)
Distinctive Style
Extravagant Eyes
Judas
Low-Light Vision
Metagenetic Improvement (AGI)
Mood Hair
Records on File (Tir Na Nog)
Restricted Gear (Rating 3)
SINner (Standard) (Siobhan Beckman)
...

-Thvor

I did just notice that, never worked with surge characters yet still reading on the rules. That being said All4BigGuns, you need to rework that part of your sheet.

Reading the Changeling section of Runner's Companion more thoroughly, I discovered that while yes, I do need to rework to get more positive metagenetics. The negatives are within the rules.  The base SURGE quality itself is stated to count toward the limit of positives, but the metagenetics it unlocks are implicitly stated to not count toward the limit.

Quote
Depending on the level taken, the character must choose a
number of Positive and Negative Metagenetic qualities (p. 110),
though gamemasters may chose to take on Negative Metagenetic
qualitiy selection to ensure balance. Metagenetic qualities chosen
in this fashion do not count toward the 35 BP cap on qualities,
as
long as they remain within the totals defined by the Changeling
quality. If the player chooses Metagenetic qualities with a total BP
value greater than the given thresholds, the excess cost or bonus
BP count toward the characters normal limits for qualities.

SURGE III gives you 15 BP of "free" negative metagenetic qualities (in that they don't count towards the 35 BP cap), but anything over 15 counts against the cap (read the last sentence of the section you quoted).

Moot anyway. I'm reworking to pull the Amnesia anyway. By the way, are you in the game, or are you just butting in on something that has nothing to do with you?

I'm thinking of joining, but haven't settled on a character concept yet. But as I said in my first post, I am trying to learn by watching those with (far) more experience than I have, and saw something which didn't match my understanding of the rules.

Well, it's the first time I've messed with SURGE, really. Didn't notice the 'must' on the positive end and thought you could voluntarily take less than that, but oh well, found that thermo isn't that expensive a metagenetic, and found one that's just kinda cool that's just as cheap. (I sometimes do like taking negatives beyond what you can get points for though.)

I'm having a very hard time coming up with a character concept that fits, since I can't see any way anyone without magic or resonance could avoid Wired Reflexes without being unbelievably stupid. None of my concepts fit both one of the roles you stated and Wired Reflexes, so I'm going to have to withdraw. Sorry.

Post by: bangbangtequila on <03-16-12/1657:16>
I don't understand why you couldn't play a magic character and fill one of those roles. I mean an Adept would be great at most of them: Adepts make phenomenal gunslingers, the power/IP boosts serious crank their ability to perform any physical task like driving, and while fire support is listed I can't see why we couldn't retitle it "Combat"

My character sheet is about halfway, I'm just sorting out the gear. I was considering being a pilot myself, but I don't know...

Well I made an adept which wasn't good enough, then I tried to make an demolitions/engineer, but I couldn't envision him as being superfast or supernatural. It bothers me that every single runner has to be a mage/adept/technomancer or have wired reflexes to be at all effective (which seems to be required for this game) - basically there is no valid place for someone who isn't magic or superfast. Sure, you could have, say, a troll enforcer with intimidation, unarmed combat, and firearms with various fantastic options, but no matter what you do, it's overshadowed by the fact that someone else, for a sixteenth of their points, could have four times as many actions per turn as he does. Essentially, I don't want to play a mage or a rogue and there's no point in playing anything else.

Well, what about a mundane pilot? Base 3 IP's when in VR, and having a Northrun Wasp would be sweet.

Ok First off you don't need to be wired at all. just have a good shooting pool and use high powered rifles or shot guns you might only get one shot so make sure it's going to put someone down with the first hit. pack a superhawk or some other high powered hand gun. Also I said nothing about needing to be fast in a group, I think an adept would do nicely as a driver or demo expert, just don't specialize in combat instead take healing or armor. But if you want to bow out I can open it up for other people.

I am not trying to be mean, this group would end shooting each other the way it's set right now. I mean it, you'd probably get outed as some super crime lord with a bounty on his head, so either your team kills you and gets the money or I have to send loads of bounty hunters on your butt. Then your team would be considered part of your criminal group, so I'd also throw Lone Star Knight Errant at them until you guys die or decide to breakup.

The Northrup Wasp is pretty nice, but it only seats one, so it wouldn't be useful for group transport. I could afford a Hughes Stallion instead, which handles almost as well and could carry the whole team. Unless I'm mistaking the use intended, that'd be a good plan, right?

How about something like this:

Hughes Stallion (Utility Helicopter)
   +Rigger Adaptation
   +Signature Masking Rating 6
+Weapon Mount (Normal, Concealed, Flexible, Armored)
      +GE Vigilant Light Autocannon
         +Smartgun System
         +Camera Upgrade - Vision Enhancement 3
         +Camera Upgrade - Vision Magnification
         +Heavy Barrel
         +Electronic Firing
   +Vehicle Sensor

I would add Gun ports, and bear in mind that you need Restricted Gear to get the Autocannon and the Signature Masking.

yeah that would work. I image that as a rebuild Huey, so big sliding doors you'd not need to gun port unless you don't want to open the door.

What sort of resources would a 4-3 group contact be able to bring to bear for me, if it's a smuggling group run by my fine self?

Did you take blackmarket pipeline? if not you'll be able to get rated F stuff also have a place to sell your ill gotten gains.

Oh, black market pipeline. Well, I suppose I could find a way to finagle that onto my contact.

@momo, do you want to be a member of my smuggling ring? Pilots are a key part of the team, and with me for handling the acquisition and selling, and you handling transit and hardware, we'd be pretty well set.

Also look into an old, but awesome drone, the Ares Air-Supply, and the CAS Wandjina.

a) I'd have added Gun Ports but I've used up all the slots as-is. Is there a way to get additional slots or would that take a bigger chopper (which I can't afford due to the 60-point cap)?

b) Yeah. Question: Do I need Restricted gear 3 - one for each of the Signature Masking, Weapon Turret, and Autocannon - or do I just need Restricted Gear 1 for the chopper as a whole?

c) I'd love to be part of your ring! Again, though, I'm out of slots so I can't add a smuggling compartment :C

Well, you have Signature Masking and an Autocannon, so we don't need to hide the items within, we need to hide the chopper!
Would you be opposed to sharing some contact points to make a joint-group contact? Say, 25 points total (I'll pitch 10 or 15) to make a group with black Market Pipeline? Would that be alright with you SeriousOne? We could get a 6-4 contact with up to 19 members and National influence with the Black market Pipeline quality. Boss.

You'd need a Restricted Gear for each item over 12. I believe there is possibility for over modification, but it starts degrading Speed and Handling.

You might consider form fitting body armor instead of the lined coat. As is, you're encumbered and it's dropping your Agi to a 1. Any tweak to your armor would work, but the encumbrance hurts.

A couple things:
1) the Taurus Multi 6 is terrible, you should run either the Sakura Fubuki (Thanks UmaroIV!) as a Light Pistol with stick'n'shocks, or else run a heavy pistol with those Ex-Explosives (The Super Warhawk with firing selection change-SA is a nice choice, dishing out 7P -3AP!)

2) rather then Born Rich, save 50 BP and grab In Debt.

1) Different weapons are a style choice and nothing else.

2) In Debt is limited to getting at most 30k out of it.

The Multi-6 is one of the worst pistols. Choosing a style of weapon is fine, if he wants revolvers great. Play with a deputy, or better a Super Warhawk. Use something capable of more then that terrible one.

I think that runner is fine as is, if you want to rework his gear go for it.

You might consider form fitting body armor instead of the lined coat. As is, you're encumbered and it's dropping your Agi to a 1. Any tweak to your armor would work, but the encumbrance hurts.

Switched to a Form-Fitting Full-Body Suit with a Helmet and a Warhawk. The concealability modifier on the Multi-6 was nice, but the damage on the Warhawk's even nicer

Well, Im still considring this as significant.

OK after reading through all the characters Ive come to an understanding, almost all the characters are going to fail to work as a group. I do not like the abundant use of amnesia this is going to cause unknown amounts of trouble. A single player using it is ok but two combined with the other flaws are going to work against the group. SO here is what I am asking over the next week please re-write your characters, and tone down the craziness. Im not trying to be mean but I want the game to work the players to have fun and all the characters to survive and not going into a gun fight halfway throw amongst themselves.

 But maybe I missed something...

Aye. A National smuggling ring.

I've avoided group contacts for the most part, but I tend to run short of points, and they're really point-intensive.

Post by: bangbangtequila on <03-17-12/1452:48>
Well Sichr, if you want in on my smuggling ring, ground transport would be useful. I'm handling face and a weapons expert, and momo is my air transport running his helicopter, but if you want to buy in it'd be about 8 BP to get the contact. The total cost so far is 25, for Black Market Pipeline (10), 2-19 members (+1), National influence (+4), Connection 6, Loyalty 4

EDIT
You can buy in too, Guns, I was just trying to avoid doubling up roles and you and I are seemingly sharing the same main focus, with 12 agility.

Title: Re: (Recruitment) Sun and Shade
Post by: Lethe on <03-17-12/1501:02>
Players sharing contacts is just a waste of BP, especially if they are expensive groups. For the same cost, you could all be part of different groups, having a multitude of resources at your disposal. If you want to be all in the same smuggling ring, create your own, starting with PC members only and doesn't cost anything. From there you can just hire additional people if needed.
Title: Re: (Recruitment) Sun and Shade
Post by: bangbangtequila on <03-17-12/1504:47>
What? We're literally splitting the contact: 25 total, 15 from me and 10 from momo. Hardly a waste, as it's simply representing mutual membership in a group operation. I find it's a good in character tie as well.
Title: Re: (Recruitment) Sun and Shade
Post by: All4BigGuns on <03-17-12/1505:23>
Unbidden comment from the peanut gallery aside, one good point was brought up. If you don't mind, bang, I could be a new member of your little group (too new to have access to the resources in it that actually buying the contact grants). This would create a link between our characters. Heck, Sichr there could do that as well if he wants to create a link between all three of our characters.
Title: Re: (Recruitment) Sun and Shade
Post by: bangbangtequila on <03-17-12/1507:01>
just buy in the membership, with point contribution towards total cost reflecting rank within the group. I'd prefer to maintain the highest, since being a Face who makes the decisions regarding contracts makes sense and it's sort of part of my concept,, and to keep it fair I'll also pay the most bp. If you want to be a new member, just toss in say 5.

At this point, I am flip-flopping a bit on reducing close combat group from 2 to 1 and putting those in (since I'd still have a 13 dice pool), but I'm not certain how exactly to manage inputting it into Chummer in an appropriate manner so the points aren't "wasted" according to the program.
Title: Re: (Recruitment) Sun and Shade

Actually, I don't think I'm technically a rigger, since I don't have a control rig. I'm just a (magically) good pilot and mechanic, which puts me somewhere between the mentioned "transport" and "engineer" roles (though I don't have demo skills. If nobody else takes those, I could prolly move some points around to cover it).

I don't think I'm stepping on any other riggers' toes, especially if you want to use drones.

Well i didn't allocate any free points on Contacts, and with Charisma * 3 I have 21 free ones, saving me a hell of a lot of points for skills.

My question was whether the free charisma points count for Black market Pipeline?

That house rule is meant to help with having more contacts while not hurting other aspects of the character. That said, time to do another tweak (just to add those contact points in).

Exactly. I'm thinking my ring covers the basics: I can call on low professional rating goons to be the shmucks carrying boxes and driving the truck, and the basic sorts of fixers handling the basic mechanics. So I can get a shipment of AK-97s sorted out without a great deal of trouble. I'll add in individuals with low loyalty who keep it purely business, Ares workers who can arrange those "lost" shipments, Cartel Members who need to get those drugs into Seattle but don't have a contact in Lonestar who might let me know when there are no guards scheduled to patrol sector 17, etc.

Don't go too low on loyalty. Remember, this is also how quick they'll turn against you.

On the note of my contacts, with the additional contact points, my fixer is now 5 connection, 4 loyalty and a 3 connection, 3 loyalty smuggler contact has been added.

Huh. Cha*3 gives me 12 extra contact points to play with.

Uh, just throw however many can go into the group contact into there and ignore the rest. I don't terribly want to redo points or whatever,
So, bangbangtequila, consider me to be putting in anywhere from 10-22 BP into the contact. Whatever works best for you.

Title: Re: (Recruitment) Sun and Shade
Post by: bangbangtequila on <03-19-12/1548:33>
Cool. I could use the bonus 5 or 10 from that to take up things like Intimidation and specialties. Total group contact stats (counting 16 from Momo, 12 from me):
Black market pipeline (10)
National Influence (4)
20-99 members (2) (Let's say in the 70's, counting goons and low level crooks)
Connection (6)
Loyalty (6)

Use your other 6 to build a contact for yourself, unless you'd rather boost up the ring somehow, like adding Magical or Matrix presences. We could make it Global, but that's sort of crazy.

== Description ==
Hank is average height, thin--he prefers the term "wiry", and very pale. He keeps his hair cut in a short, military buzz. Small scars line his face, hands, and arms, most picked up from chunks of flying debris.

== Background ==
Henry "Hank" Kulakowski was born in 2034. 18 years later, he joined the UCAS army. Given his physical limitations, Hank was quickly placed in a demolitions squad, where he discovered an almost intuitive grasp of explosives and where they could best be used. Ten years later, he was showing a fairly green private the ropes when the private accidentally set off a shaped explosive. The private was killed almost instantly; Hank managed to escape most of the blast, but had to have his eyes replaced, and has never felt like his hearing has fully recovered. Forced into early retirement by his injuries, Hank decided to put his skills to use for whoever could pay the most.
== Concept ==
Ex-army demolitions expert.

== Notes ==
About the contacts:
John "One-eyed Jack" Correl: When Hank got caught in the explosion, Jack was the medic who patched him up; they became good friends afterwards. After Jack retired from the army in '66, he decided to lead a quiet life--but he can't turn Hank down if he's hurt.

Cheryl "Cherry" Harmington: Cherry was a whiz at logistics in the army--anything her fellow soldiers (including Hank) needed, she could get. Quickly. Food, ammo, a "spare" tank or two...nothing seemed to give her much trouble. Of course, since she wasn't supposed to be doing logistics, all of these acquisitions were through unofficial channels. Discharged in '67, Cherry found that her ability to network translated well to life on the shadier side of the street, and she's settled into a rather successful role coordinating the movements of supplies and merchandise between those who have, and those who are able to pay.

Looking good, all you need now is Swiss Army Knife and Some Duct Tape. Then your MacGyver with explosives.
Your character is good, his entrance is receiving a Vid Call from Cherry about a job that needs someone with Explosives training. The message is urgent giving him 30 minutes to get to the meeting. Now get to the game!

Got the knife (or, at least, the basic survival knife).  ;) Haven't found duct tape in the manuals. Clearly a significant oversight by the publishers.

Duct tape should be a part of any lifestyle that isn't Street.  8)
