Title: [OOC] A Street Legends for VU93 Posters?
Post by: Smiley on (11:39:08/01-02-12)
Hello everyone. Me and a few others had an idea. Well, the title of this thread is pretty indicative but I'll elaborate more. The idea is producing a fan made product resembling Street Legends/10 Jackpointers but with VU93 Posters, past and present posters. The aim would be to release a near-pro PDF version of what we will produce but if we lack the skills to do that, it will at least be released as a post on the VU93 board. So here's a couple of things that are needed for this little project to come to life.

Player Characters: First, we need players willing to have their characters in this project. If a lot of people are interested we'll take one character per player, maybe two if time and word count allows. You can post in this thread if you'd want one or two of your character in this product, or even someone else's character. I do want to know if people are interested in the idea. For a little more information on how your character will be written about, read the following "Writers" section. The character must be or at least been significantly active on VU93 to be considered. Since it's only in the concept stage I suggest interested players to start participating in the play thread. ;)

UPDATE: If you don't feel adventurous, you can always write the dossier on your own characters using any other you play on VU93. But for those who are willing to have others have a try at it, here's what we need from players to have their character's dossier written by one of the writers. Yes, even players have a little bit of work to do.

-Vital Stats (Age, Height, Weight, Hair, Eyes, Gender, Metatype, Awakened)
-An image of the character. It's not mandatory. If you have one, give the link to the image in question.
-A short physical description
-A short psychological description
-The character's history.
-A  very short resume of a few runs the character did, between one and three significant runs will do.
-A list of a few facts and/or rumors about the character. The funny, the frivolous, the ridiculous or the downright wrong or false can be included. Legwork is NEVER perfect afterall
-In all the sections, write in default black what can be know with basic legwork, change in blue what would take a little more effort and in red what is very hard to know. This is not mandatory, but can help the writer in many ways.
-For images, it is mandatory that the image belongs to you or have written permission from the owner for it to be used in this project

When that is done, just send it to me. When we have decided who will be taking the dossier, I will forward it to the right writer. After that, be patient, when the writer is done, a copy of the draft will be sent to you for approval.

Writers: I don't really need to mention that the more writers working on this, the faster it will go. I realize not everyone has a perfect spelling and orthography and whatever, so someone reviewing things would be also needed. God knows That I, myself, need someone to hit me with a rule on the wrist, as English is not my native language. The idea would be to have writers playing their own characters writing about their colleagues, a little bit like in SL.  Players will send their character information (most probably to me) and then will be forwarded to the chosen writer to be worked on. Writers can also decide to write their own characters. There will also be a phase where any character from VU93 will be able to place a few comments on any character that was written about. A few short stories would also be nice but let's focus on the characters first and see what happens next. People interested in writing can contact me by PM or just post here. When writing on a character, as a guide, get your inspiration on how the profile should be written from Street Legends.

Why this project? Well, because our characters are more awesome than those canon, obviously! But more importantly (and more seriously) to show what we, fans of Shadowrun, can come up with. I am a big fan of 10 Jackpointers and Street Legends and I found that VU93 was also rich in original characters and stories. Reading the Biography Thread or past posts in the IC thread, I think it deserves its own little reward. So that's why I pledge myself to work on this project. I leave this thread open for discussion, see what people think of the idea and how many are interested in participating.

Disclaimer: This project is started by fans for fans, from our own free time and aimed to be released free. As of now no one from Catalyst is involved in any of this and they are in no way in obligation to help us or make our characters cannon if this project sees completion. I did obtain Bull's permission to use VU93 for this project and I give him my sincere thanks. The project is also just in its concept phase and might not even see the light of day if not enough people participate. This project will move forward only when those involved will be convinced it is ready to. And for those who worry about it, credits will be given where it is due.

LOVE IT! I'll submit Iceblade to get a writeup, and I'd be willing to write up someone else, as well.
Title: Re: [OOC] A Street Legends for VU93 Posters?
Post by: Keita on (12:13:42/01-02-12)
Wonderful idea!  ;D I'd love to participate in this, and I'd be more than willing to do some of the writing. As for which character I'd submit...Madrecita, obviously.  :P She's most active, and as far as I know, one of only a few female PC's in VU93. I already have short fiction featuring her posted in the fanfic section, and I'm in the process of writing more, so she meets most of the criteria except possibly the "significantly active" clause.  :P I haven't been around long enough yet for her to have been "significantly active".

Anyway...yeah...I'm fully supportive of this idea!

PS: I'd be willing to proofread as well. English is not my first language, but I am fairly good at it. As long as you can live with the Queen's English.  ;D I don't do English (US).  :P

Ah hell, if there's room for us to have a second character in the list, I'll toss another one of mine that I haven't brought over to this site yet. A street samurai named Faust.
Title: Re: [OOC] A Street Legends for VU93 Posters?
Post by: FastJack on (17:03:46/01-02-12)
Great idea! I'll submit Mercedes for consideration, even though she isn't posting much... yet.
Title: Re: [OOC] A Street Legends for VU93 Posters?
Post by: Bull on (22:57:27/01-02-12)
I don't post much these days (I need 12 more hours in a day, dammit! :))  but I'll write up a couple.  Maybe Mac and Chaos, since I used them a bit early on.
Title: Re: [OOC] A Street Legends for VU93 Posters?
Post by: Smiley on (08:39:18/01-03-12)
Good response so far, great! Well, I'll leave this open for a few days and we'll start organizing things.

EDIT: Frak that! There's no reason why we shouldn't start organizing now. So the first post has been updated with what we got so far. I assumed under what persona writers would be writing but if I'm wrong just tell me and I'll change it. :)
Title: Re: [OOC] A Street Legends for VU93 Posters?
Post by: Mirikon on (11:40:21/01-03-12)
I'll write up whoever's free. Perhaps Madre?
Title: Re: [OOC] A Street Legends for VU93 Posters?
Post by: Smiley on (11:51:52/01-03-12)
As of now everyone's free with the obvious two exceptions. If that's alright with everyone we'll decide once we have the exhaustive list of characters that a dossier/profile will be written. I'm putting up a list of characters I'd like to see in and I will probably contact their players soon about it. It's going to be fun. :)
Title: Re: [OOC] A Street Legends for VU93 Posters?
Post by: FastJack on (15:23:22/01-03-12)
I'll see if I can't get Mercedes' written up as my other VU93 poster, KageZero.

Post by: CanRay on (15:35:16/01-03-12)
How about a dossier on the recently deceased Big Murphy?
Title: Re: [OOC] A Street Legends for VU93 Posters?
Post by: Smiley on (16:34:34/01-03-12)
Why not. Adding KageZero and Big Murphy to the list.
Title: Re: [OOC] A Street Legends for VU93 Posters?
Post by: Keita on (16:48:05/01-03-12)
I'm hesitant about including Ysoni because he's really part of a duet, and his partner in crime isn't exactly "canon".  :P I've had someone complain about that, hence his general lack of participation in VU93.  :P Anyway...I'll leave that up to you decide whether he gets in or not. I'm happy with it either way.  :)
Title: Re: [OOC] A Street Legends for VU93 Posters?
Post by: FastJack on (16:54:20/01-03-12)
Why not. Adding KageZero and Big Murphy to the list.
Actually, I meant I would write up Mercedes AS KageZero. ;)
Title: Re: [OOC] A Street Legends for VU93 Posters?
Post by: Smiley on (17:18:08/01-03-12)
Oh! If you really want to sure. To be honest I would have liked to do it but it's your character. :)

Though KageZero would also be a good choice to have a dossier. ;)
Title: Re: [OOC] A Street Legends for VU93 Posters?
Post by: The Wyrm Ouroboros on (18:34:02/01-03-12)
Just as a suggestion, if you want someone to write up someone else's character, the person whose character it is should first write the character up.  The person who controls/uses the IC writer can then rewrite it, putting their 'stamp' upon it, but the final product should definitely should be approved -- or shut down -- by the character owner.

As for me, well -- I am leery about submitting any of my several old PCs, primarily because I don't want to put them out there, then have to take them back, as it were.
Title: Re: [OOC] A Street Legends for VU93 Posters?
Post by: Smiley on (18:40:38/01-03-12)
Oh, there was no doubt in my mind that character profiles would have to be approved by their owners. And it's your choice if you don't want to. :)
Title: Re: [OOC] A Street Legends for VU93 Posters?
Post by: The Wyrm Ouroboros on (19:21:52/01-03-12)
My questions are more legal than preferential.  By preference, I think it'd be fun -- and good practice.  I'm not sure of the legal hoops.

All you freelancers, &c. -- if you write something here, what's required for you to bring it into SR canon via a product?
Title: Re: [OOC] A Street Legends for VU93 Posters?
Post by: Smiley on (19:35:41/01-03-12)
Unless someone from Catalyst ask for it, none of this is canon and all characters should belong to their creators. I don't work for Catalyst nor am I freelancer for them. It's a fan made project but Bull maybe can confirm this. :P
Title: Re: [OOC] A Street Legends for VU93 Posters?
Post by: Bull on (19:42:50/01-03-12)
I'm not certain I grok the question.

If you're asking "If I write it up here, will i be able to use it in canon later as a freelancer?" then the answer is, yes, though as with everything else it's subject to revision and change from the line developer and editors.  Assuming Jason lets you use them, of course.

if you're asking "if I post this here, can CGL use it?" the answer is no.

And as a note, I'll likely use Bull the Ork Decker as the author for Chaos and Mac, when i write them up.

Title: Re: [OOC] A Street Legends for VU93 Posters?
Post by: Smiley on (19:49:27/01-03-12)
Yeah, I think he was worried that if one of his character was getting written on here, that he was wavering his rights on that character.
Title: Re: [OOC] A Street Legends for VU93 Posters?
Post by: CanRay on (20:16:52/01-03-12)
VU93 is canon thanks to Missions.  Of course, considering who is in charge of them, that's hardly surprising, is it?
Title: Re: [OOC] A Street Legends for VU93 Posters?
Post by: Bull on (20:42:05/01-03-12)
Almost every official forum has something in them, somewhere, that says that anything posted on them becomes the property of so-and-so.  I don't see that particularly terminology anywhere in the TOS, but it may be buried somewhere else, dunno.

Anyway, that legal speak is there generally to protect the companies ass.  If you write up "Night Steel the bad Ass Street Samurai" on the forums, and then a year or two later a character gets used in SR Fiction named Night Steel, that little legal notice basically means you can't sue them.  because things like names and concepts tend to come and go, and similarities are bound to crop up.

CGL wouldn't condone lifting a character from the forums and using it without permission.  Same goes for story concepts or anything else.  But, in the case of similarities, they need to be legally covered.

And yes, VU93 is now canon :)  However, I haven't used any of the personalities from here.  Yet.  Maybe I'll do another review contest here in the near future, with prizes being a guest appearance in the fiction. :)

Bull

This answers my question.

In which case, yes, I'd be glad to write the character up.  I won't say by whom, though.  Muahahaha.

Post by: Smiley on (23:32:57/01-03-12)
Alright, a small update for those who wants their characters written by someone else. That's the way I think it will  go smoothly, but since I made a point in involving as much people as possible, I'd like to have your input on this. Any comments or suggestions are welcome.

Also, going back in VU93 history, is there any character that should be there? Just so I can contact his owner about it.

I'm happy to have someone else write up Madre. It'll be interesting to see how other PC's view her from what she posts in VU93 and how she interacts with them.  ;D

What I would like to know is...how will you decide who writes about who?
Title: Re: [OOC] A Street Legends for VU93 Posters?

When we get a bunch of characters, we can all put our preferences. Which characters you'd like to write and we'll see. Maybe mud wrestling?  ;D

Need more hot Elven or Ork chicks for that.  ;)

Also, I'd insist that Bull up the resolution of the VU93 if we do that, otherwise the mud will look really, really bad.

Got it. Thanks Keita.

Alright, we'll be waiting a few more days, probably until sunday, to see if other names are going to add on to that list and then we'll start distributing the work.  And we're still going to take new characters after that, I just figured we'd need to start working on this one day. Does that sounds good to y'all? I know Mirikon was really interested in writing Madrecita and I see no objections to it. So I guess I'll send you the writeup as soon as I get the chance so you can work on it. No need to rush anyway, it's not like we have a time restriction or anything. :P
Title: Re: [OOC] A Street Legends for VU93 Posters?

So when we finish writing our piece, should we send a copy to the player, so they can sign off on it before we post it?

Whoever ends up writing mine, all of that happened in game, I haven't added anything TOO out there that happened though (the conclusion of the wendigo plot line), or been specific on some things. It's fairly obvious that a lot was caused by Ghost Cartels, and you can see how that storyline ended in our game at uni. .. explosively.

Post by: Smiley on (17:47:07/01-08-12)
Alright, that's pretty much time we start working on this. Now is pretty much the time to decide who's going to write who. I don't really have a system to decide that yet so, I guess we're gonna try posting our preferences first and see. Or I'll come up with a way to randomize it. Again, take your time when you write, there's no rush and no deadlines. Characters in Italic have all the info needed to start working on them.

Well, Smiley has nearly everything. An artist is going to start working on his portrait soon but it's not like it really matters for now. :P

I somewhat presume that the green/blue/red stuff should not be in the final product?
Title: Re: [OOC] A Street Legends for VU93 Posters?
Post by: Smiley on (18:43:36/01-08-12)
Okay, the red - blue things is to help in the roleplay aspect of the writing process. For exemple, Smiley writes about X character. X wrote in red that his character killed a bunch of kids in a run. Knowing that it is hard-to-know-info... Smiley would be cautious about this bit of info he received, saying "I don't know if I read it right but according to what I got, this asshole sprayed a bunch of kids with bullets!" implying that the info was hard to find and/or unreliable. Or I could decide that Smiley didn't find the info at all and not write about it. It's just to help in the writing process so, no, it won't be on the final product.

Which one would you like Mirikon?

Title: Re: [OOC] A Street Legends for VU93 Posters?
Post by: The Wyrm Ouroboros on (19:44:18/01-08-12)
No offense, but despite all his in-character posturing, Iceblade really isn't playing at a level to get information on the Wyrm.  That information will be coming from people who are very close to him, and vice-versa -- and who can get what he's eliminated over the years, knowing where to look, and how.
Title: Re: [OOC] A Street Legends for VU93 Posters?
Post by: Mirikon on (19:52:09/01-08-12)
There are plenty of ways to get information, Wyrm. Unless Wyrm can get into the Resonance Realms and remove information from the Archives, all it takes is calling in a sufficiently large favor, or doing a big enough service in trade with a friendly technomancer. And he could always track down some of the people Wyrm's known in the past. Or he could see what Wyrm's threat assessment with the Tir Tairngir government has in it. Just because Iceblade is, himself, not on a level that he could do the matrix-fu to track Wyrm doesn't mean he can't do legwork to get the information if he wants to.
Title: Re: [OOC] A Street Legends for VU93 Posters?
Post by: Smiley on (20:00:21/01-08-12)
Now now. Let's stop giving RP reasons why would a character may or may not be able to compile a profile on another one. If I read between the lines, I get the Wyrm would like someone else to do it. And I'll agree. The feud between your character is a great rp to read but I sense that it may get personal between the players. So for now Mirikon, best that you choose another character. Wyrm will also not be writing Iceblade's for the same reasons. Let's keep this thread as professional and clean as we can. Pretty please?

Behave kids.  One thing you don't want to do here is play the "My Dick is Bigger Than your Dick" card.

All information is available, with some luck, some work, and some cred.  All of it.  I'd say the only one you can't dig up dirt on is FastJack.  And even that's not true.  You can probably dig up a lot of dirt.  the problem is, how much of it's true? :)

I'd be happy to write up Iceblade if he's not spoken for yet. It seems fair, since he did a really amazing job on Madre, and there are IC reasons for it two, not least of which is sharing a run and a bottle of Tir whiskey.  ;D  Besides, I'm just plain curious about him.  :P I'd love to learn more about him as myself, the player.

If not him, then maybe I'll do Smiley or Murphy or Money. I'm familiar with them to some extent, and have a "feel" for them since there's been enough interaction to form a personal opinion.

I haven't had time to work on my first writeup, had to clean and pack my shit for days. Damn bedbugs!

I need a couple or three volunteers for The Wyrm's writeup.

I need one volunteer to be the hacker who retrieves the file (from a very secure place, thank you), who gives a two- or three-sentence blurb introducing the file, and who tosses in a couple of shadowtalk comments.  (Yes, I do my own shadowtalk.  Not all of it, but some.)  I also need one or two volunteers to whom I can attribute other shadowtalk comments.

Please note that these are all pointed comments that I want to be in there; you'll certainly have the chance to rephrase it the way your character might say it, but I reserve the right to judge whether or not you've kept it pointed enough.  ;)

I'm not a good enough writer to do a whole section, and Chrona probably wouldn't bother. But I'm willing to do Shadowtalk, Wyrm's way of doing Shadowtalk is a good Idea.

Well, I'll be surely done with Shaper by Sunday, been a little crazy over here. I was gonna wait until I had every writeup to start the "Shadowtalk phase" but since it's going slow these days, we'll start with what we have sunday. Sounds good?

Also, how do we name this project? I haven't really thought of that...

Post by: Mirikon on (21:22:42/01-25-12)
We all like story, Wyrm. But the first three profiles done (Iceblade, Madrecita, and Smiley) were done with the characters sending basic info and background to the writer, and then the writer doing it in their own voice, as you see in the Street Legends book.

Title: Re: [OOC] A Street Legends for VU93 Posters?
Post by: Smiley on (23:10:46/01-25-12)
Wyrm, I didn't offer that to you simply because you made it clear you wanted control over your character's profile, including what is written in the shadowtalk. I figured it would be a lot easier for you to organize and keep track of things in your own thread. Well, at least I thought that was your goal by creating your own thread. Fastjack seemed to be giving free reins to others concerning shadowtalk so I asked him if he wanted Mercedes profile with the others. Simple as that.

Alright Fasjack, it's done. Mercedes' profile is with the others. If you want, you can delete the thread your created for her.

For your shadowtalk Wyrm, Smiley will have a few lines. I planned on getting back to you for that. Just give me some time, it's getting busy over here, but I'll get to it. I didn't even have time to finish up Shaper, nor shadowcomment any of the profiles in the shadowtalk thread. I promise I'll pick a few lines as soon as I can.

Yeah, Wyrm. I think you might have wanted to lead off that yours was going to be more "extensive". I know I took a look at it and, if I didn't suspect that you've had most of this written up for years, I would've considered dropping Mercedes. ;)

Which one's yours, ABG?  I have to admit, I far prefer putting in shadow comments as I go; fragmenting them the way they are ... not so much.

I am reminded -- down at the bottom of the Wyrm, I have posted a 'Character owned by:' and then a link to the owner's profile here.  I plan on doing this with any of them I do work on.  ;)

And yeah, I'd like volunteers, or at least permission to use names.  Right now I need IDs for:

Or, you know, he can always request that the line be removed as being stellar-class BS.  I for one am more than willing to strip out stuff that shouldn't be there -- or edit for coherency and consistency.

While I'd agree that the general VU93 boards are as open as Shadowland ever was to lies, damn lies, and statistics, when it comes to these particular things, as I recall the original proposition it's the owner of the character who has final say on what goes onto his or her profile.  Truth, or at least entertaining rumor, is what's most likely to stay in the profile.

On the other hand, don't expect Morg in the general boards to get warm fuzzies from the Wyrm because he used 'Captain Oblivious'.  Friends and close acquaintances are the sorts to be allowed to use nicknames, not some clumsy twerp who can barely even use a commlink.

EDIT: And while the advert portion of Morg's is gonna stay, I really don't think we want the sort of clutter like Faust's response, which has nothing to do with Predator or her family.  No offense meant, Mirikon, but I'm not going to be the one to put it in there.

Title: Re: [OOC] A Street Legends for VU93 Posters?
Post by: The Wyrm Ouroboros on (19:32:22/04-19-12)
Ripping into him for his bad manners is fine on the boards, but it isn't usually the sort of thing one wants in a profile -- which would take the focus off the profile and put it on Morg and whomever is tearing him a new one.
Title: Re: [OOC] A Street Legends for VU93 Posters?
Post by: Smiley on (20:01:31/04-19-12)
Wyrm is right about the shadowcomments. AllForBigGuns has the final say on what's going to be on his profile. If he feels your character is not in the know for something, so be it. As for the relevancy of the comments, they should try to focus on the character. Small deviations on things related in a way to the character is fine (Example: Elves being old runners in Smiley's profile) but the goal of this is to talk about the characters and the impression they leave on other VU93 posters.

  • Main Hacker (who stole the profile in the first place, and as a reward I'll even write something about where you swiped the profile from)
  • Young Decker
  • Old Decker (Bull, maybe?)
  • Skeptic
  • Military Guy
  • Social Runner/Fixer (I know there's someone like that around here, but dammit ...)
  • Curious Someone
  • Anybody's Guess
  • Matrix Addict
  • English, MF, Do You Speak It?!? (Thinking Morg or Marak...)

... and that's everyone that's in there.  Again, I'm wide open to any other posting.

you have my permission to use me if you want . Just message me what you need.

I'd have let Madre comment on Wyrm, but she doesn't fit the profile of any of the ones you want. And besides... ;)...Madre would probably be a bit snippy with him.  :P

Smiley, did Ray give you Money's info? I'm due to write him up, but I haven't recieved anything as yet.

"Sorry for sending you into hell, Madrecita.  Well, not really."  ;)

How would YOU best define Madrecita in two or three words?  I think she might fit as one of the younger sorts, one way or the other.

How would I define Madre in two or three words? Fearless, wise, decisive.

Hehe. Madre is 60 years old, with 20 of those spent in the shadows, 13 of which was her vendetta against Aztechnology, and 7 running the shadows in general. She's not young by any means, but her fearlessness and Spanish cultural influences sometimes makes her bold, even reckless at times. She never jumps without looking, mind, which is why her snippyness toward Wyrm is not because of that run. She took it on willingly and doesn't hold grudges about it. No...her dislike stems from his superior attitude and condescention toward other runners.  ;)

Not to ... well, let's just say that in no way does Madrecita come across as being 60.  30, maybe 35 at the oldest -- and a 35 trying to hold onto the illusion she's still in her 20's.  Sorry.

Yes, because all old people act the same.
Title: Re: [OOC] A Street Legends for VU93 Posters?
Post by: Keita on (06:46:34/05-15-12)
No, she doesn't come across as being old. But bear in mind that she is an elf. Elves probably don't age the same way other metahumans do. 60 is probably not even middle age for an elf. She doesn't act 60 because she doesn't feel 60. There's no reason for her to act like an old babushka, so she doesn't. You would have a point if she was human...but she's not. Part of the reason I selected the elven metatype for her was for me to play arond with that a bit. Say you had a ton of life experience, plus your youth? What would you do with it? Go sit in an old age home because you're chronologically old? Or would you just get on with life and enjoy it? Add to that her bad past experience, and that she really doesn't have anything holding her back from living - no responsible corp job to hold down, no family to support, enough raw wealth to fall back on when times get tough and work is scarce - how else is she going to act? Really, it's not in her personality to become passive and contemplative. But don't think just because she doesn't act her age she isn't wise. She's not "trying to hold on to her youth". She never lost it. In short...Madre grew up, but she didn't grow old. She doesn't feel old, and she certainly doesn't look old, so why should she act old? The experience in her life, the wisdom she's gained, is applied in her life, in how she views the world and the people in it. It's also expressed in her magical ability. Being 60 doesn't mean you've seen it all, doesn't mean you can't learn. Madre learned that lesson in a very harsh way when she hit 40 and was cast into the shadows. She's learned to keep an open mind, in other words.

I do not deny your thought process, but as one of the first set of elves growing up in a world essentially as a human -- not unlike the Wyrm, in fact -- Madrecita is not going to have the example of older elves to 'compare' herself against.  In 500 years of Shadowrun time, a 60-year-old elf is still going to be in their late adolescence, I agree, because the first elven generation is, or could have been, only their great-grandparent.  The impact of growing up in a human-dominated world without older elves means your starting psychological framework is that of a human.  You think in human-timeline-scale, you act and react in human-timeline terms.  Right now, I bet you the IEs are looking at the first generations and going 'holy crap, is it like this every time?!?'

Wisdom and experience express themselves in, well, maturity.  Maturity expresses itself in refined passions, in focus, in drive, and usually in risk-taking only as needed -- 'look before you leap' as well as 'think before you speak'.  As one grows older one can experience psychological 'regression' of sorts -- the mid-life crisis is the classic example -- and go out and do the same sorts of crazy stuff you used to be able to do, usually winding up with saying the morning after, 'I'm getting too old for this shit.'  Madrecita, the Wyrm, and all the other early-century elves are really only now going to be starting to come to terms with what it means to be an elf.  The people they grew up with, the people with whom they have a shared history, are the ones getting old, who are 'getting too old for this shit', while they themselves are bouncing back in the morning like a randy 23-year-old.

Think of these two situations:
Both M and W grew up in a human culture.  Their referents are human.  If they were U2Cs, they'd expect to be well-placed in their business, at least at the lower edge of upper management, expecting grand-children any day now, etc. etc.  This is how their parents lived, and their friends, and almost everyone they knew.  This, in fact, is part of the issue with elven groups like the Ancients -- socially and psychologically, they are still human.  Low-echelon people and lieutenants expect to move up, but there is no room at the top -- because even though Green Lucifer (or whomever) has been the leader for 20 years, he's still '23 years old' and going strong, and GOING to be going strong for another seven or eight decades.

Elven society, and elven psychology, is not yet set in the minds of the elves of the 6th World.  Long-term thinking and planning, where 20 years is like 5 for a human, is yet not part of the SR elven mindset.  SR elves still think and act essentially like humans.  And only the oldest -- Madrecita and the Wyrm -- are getting the chance to come to terms with what a 300-year lifespan is going to be all about.

We're going to be partying hard with the great-grandchildren of our human high-school sweethearts.  But the social structure for that has yet to be developed.

Having thought about it at work today, I did realize that there IS one character who Madrecita would fit -- Yellow Rose of Texas.

I dont know who your refering to as W Wyrm, be it yourself or me, but your right, Its an interesting thought process that starts when you start watching the guys you ran with in your first youth die of old age in retirement when they aren't orks or trolls.

Title: Re: [OOC] A Street Legends for VU93 Posters?
Post by: Keita on (02:56:26/05-16-12)
Well yes. Of course their reference points are still human. I'm not sure if you saw in some of Madrecita's posts, but she's made several references to that, about how painful it was for her to see all her old friends growing old while she didn't. That's one of the main reasons she didn't go back to Spain after concluding her business with the Azzies. And also why she remains in the shadows when she could probably have gone back to Europe and restarted her original carreer as a surgeon. I get what you're saying. But I'm saying that Madre's already started experiencing the effects of her longer life span. In that situation, when you become aware of the problem, you have very few options availible.

1) You can start associating only with other elves who still get you. (Isolate herself)
2) You can live in the now, and deal with things as they come. (Denial)
3) You can combine the two. (Deal as best you can). Live in the moment and deal with what's in front of you, but keep contact with others like you. This is what Madre is doing. This is one of the things that draws her and Iceblade together. They're both acutely aware of the dilemma they face, and they both know they need something to hold on to, something "permanent" in a world where almost everything else is transient.

These elves have to make things up as they go along, because they don't have any reference points, like you said. They have no other option but to deal as best they can and hope for the best. Madre isn't the sort who would isolate herself. In her view, she's still part of the world. She knows who she is and what she's capable of. And she knows what's coming. So what does she do? Her body tells her she can still party and do dangerous things. Her long life experience tells her what she is and isn't capable of, and gives her a solid basis to rationalise what's coming. So she parties and lives dangerously, but she does so as a calculated risk.

Again, I'm not sure if you noticed some of her and Ysoni's posts, how she interacts with him. That should also tell you something about her. She doesn't go out with Ysoni (he's in his 20s) or any of the kids she trained. Many of them see her as a mother figure, or an aunt. She could conceivably go out and party on their level if she wanted to, but mentally, she feels older than them. I showed that in many of the posts I made. Perhaps it's not that clear in the posts because they don't show Madre in her personal, day to day life, only how she works as a runner. In her professional life, she's going to make use of her young-feeling body and extensive experience to take on some very challenging runs. It gives her an edge that younger runners don't really have, and she's doing to push that advantage, and push herself, challenge herself.

Well, if you want a profile done, in the way we were doing it, it helps to have some sort of history in the group.  Walking in on your first day (as it were) and wanting everyone who's been here a while to contribute to your brag sheet can get kind of awkward - resulting in a lot of 'I have no idea who this hoser is' kind of contributions.  No history, you know?

Once more, I was asking for anyone to write about my character..I was thinking of offering to help write.  Course the more you misread what I say, the more I feel like not helping out at all.  READ!  I know it would be awkward for folks to write about my character seeing as she just started showing up on VU93.

Actually, I did read - and instead of your nonspecific 'is this still going on', I specified thusly:
Well, if you want a profile done, in the way we were doing it ...
... then reiterated my statement that it would be awkward to write about someone who just popped up.  Also, I think you meant (above) that you WEREN'T asking for anyone to write about your character - not that you were.  I read, and I like to think that I do pay close attention to what people write, and also that I write clearly and concisely in reply, using specific examples, etc.  I'm sorry you feel otherwise, but my review of our posts suggests that I haven't said anything about you not adding to the various shadowtalks.

All that said, though, I don't think any contributions you made - or even if you volunteered to put one or two together (hint hint to y'all who still haven't, which alas includes me) - would be rejected out of hand.  The project hasn't been active in lo this long time, but it could by all means be revitalized.  New blood would certainly help do it.

you know just my 2nuyen worth here, but well Wyrm Ill be honest you do come across as a bit standoffish towards anyone who is new, or hasn't posted much. Much like our confrontation in VU93. I read what Nightmare wrote and it simply asked if it was still going on, there was no other information and thus a post more like yes it is still going on/no it isn't, what interest do you have in the project, kinda post would be more productive rather than a quite bossy and slightly arrogant stance of well you are new here so dont bother. At least that is how I read your post and I own that reading. You may disagree in intentions but that is how it came across to a bystander. Please I hope this can be taken as constructive criticism and everyone can work on making their posts and the community here an inclusive one for all runners. Remember with all the new Shadowrun material coming out, SRR, SRO, SR5, Crossfire etc there are going to be more and more people introduced to it, and thus many will find their way to these forums which correct me if I'm wrong, are the official forums. I love that there is a very pationate fan community here and do not want that changed into the same corp run bs forums of many other games, but please remember new people will come and with gentle nudging and guidance they will find their way to fit into the community.

sorry for the wall of text but punctuation kinda goes out when I get in rant mode

... did you have something to propose that was appropriate to the thread?  Or were you just taking a private issue with me, one which attacked my character's IC response to an ICly pugnacious post from your character on the grounds that I (the player and poster) should be nicer to new people, into the public eye?

Nightmare asked a question.  I responded.  He took offense at how I responded; I clarified.  He took offense again, and I clarified until the issue was resolved.  Why are you trying to resurrect it?
Title: Re: [OOC] A Street Legends for VU93 Posters?
Post by: Jesskitten on (22:28:34/05-13-14)
I made reference to our previous encounter simply as a point of reference. My intention with that post was to provide what I hoped to be some constructive criticism in regards to a perceived issue. It is simply a response that I felt was in support of a fellow newcomer and well, I know you are very pationate on these forums, and that is a great thing, and that you are one of the quickest posters especially on VU93 areas from what I have seen. However in some areas when new people are involved the discussion becomes well I guess as it did with Nightmare, kinda standoffish. And in terms of resurrection, The post wasn't that old that I felt it was outside of a comment period and I saw no resolution to the issue within the thread. Im sorry if this detracts from the discussion, and would not disagree if a moderator removed all related posts, but I do feel the need to remind some of the old guard, that new people do come, comment and at times may not get things right, but there is profit in patience,
Title: Re: [OOC] A Street Legends for VU93 Posters?

I have been neither standoffish nor deliberately offensive; when I am, you will certainly know, because Fastjack gets all officially red, and then spanks me pretty hard.  What I do is provide direction and instruction with patience - because I am willing to provide it again and again and again so long as the individual(s) involved are actively desiring to learn.  If you feel that my direction and instruction and, yes, patience is counterproductive to creating a group of people who post coherently, comprehend the game, and enliven it with things that are within the expanse of what is canon by statement or by implication, or what is conceivable within the stated reach of the game, then by all means, protest my patient instruction and direction.  It is my observation that, excepting your VU93 profile, as these are the only posts that have made since that time, you are using Nightmare's previous disagreement with me as an attempt to get back at me for our private conversation.

Please desist.

In regards to what Nightmare posted two months ago, and what he has posted elsewhere on the 'land (including in VU93) since, I would say that it is my opinion and observation that the issue - the misunderstanding, which I clarified - was resolved.  If Nightmare has issue with my belief of its resolution, he may answer, in public or in private.
