What drones do you guys like for Riggers? any advice for a newb? Also what modifications, if any, would you add to standared drones
-
Well every drone has a porpose need to spy? Mitshamma fly eye need over watch dalmation back up in a fire fight doberman or steel linx.
-
You're not going to beat the Doberman for your basic shooter drone. Putting just a fixed mount on another drone is as much as buying the doberman. Because the best dice tend to be from remote control, the typical weapon is one that is FA capable. The White Knight LMG is classic. I twitch a little at Forbidden, however, so I'll choose something a bit lighter. My personal preference is an Ingram Smartgun X with an ammo drum, and make sure the sensors have imagelink and smartlink. There are other good choices, too, depending on your situation and idiosyncracies.
I've begun to think I'm in the minority, but I always try to have an EVO orderly around. It's nice having a self-mobile ambulance gurney that's able to do the medic work so I don't have to while outrunning any unboosted and most boosted metahumans. I'll stick a first aid autosoft [3] on it and let it do the job so I don't have to. Oh - it always gets gecko pads, too.
Though you'll find plenty of arguments on the list as to whether it's possible, if you're going with the party but not doing anything significant, get a steel lynx and add a rigger cocoon. The arguments are on whether adding the cocoon is legitimate by the rules. Most tables say yes, but there are some well-run and enjoyable tables that say no -- check before you go there.
A common favorite is the LEBD-1 (from arsenal). Like the doberman, this does a lot for a surprisingly low cost once you look at the additions. If you've got This Old Drone, an alternative liked by many is the Lone Star Strato-9. (I've gotten tripped by the obsolesence so I'm not as fond of it , but it's still a solid choice.)
I like to recommend picking up two or three microtapper bugs (Unwired 198), giving all of them gecko pads and one of them 10 meters of optical cable. Put one on each side of a signal stopper and you've made a tunnel for your comms. One is all you need to turn a hardwired system into part of the unwired matrix.
I also recommend a handful of drones that are meant solely for looking around. Micros like the Kanmushi are hard to see, but they're very limited in how many sensors you can stick in there. The fly-spy, well, it's very hard to go wrong with a flying spydrone. I'm very fond of the dragonfly, especially since according to its verbal description it's supposed to have an ultrasound sensor built in. That particular issue is a gamemaster discussion, but at least you can point to the text.
Notice that I tend to go with cheap drones. I don't want to lose any, but I figure I'm going to lose a few. I'm less likely to be devastated at losing 5K than 50K
With that in mind, remember to prepare for that loss. At a minimum, remember that if you leave it behind there's a good chance it's going through a forensics lab. Self-detructs are outside chargen availability (darnit), so do what you can in advance: clean out the RFIDs, run cleansers on it before you go in, that sort of thing. If you can, bring them out -- it reduces problems from you forgetting to preclean your gear.

Ares Sentinel "P"-Series Drone from "This Old Drone", for home defense.
Why should the Corps be the only ones with a nice defensive system?
-
ahhh cool. Would you sugest getting the Armor up to 9 on the Dog? or any other modifications? is the Self repair mod good or bad? (if it can aoutmaticaly patch itself up that might make it last longer??)
-
Self repair is an overly large investment for a disposable drone.
Armor 9 is excellent because it's hardened armor. That means if the weapon's damage (before autofire) doesn't beat the armor, no damage is done. With 9 hardened armor and a good command DP, it's unlikely that small arms will be able to down your bot.
As to the types of drones you want, it depends on the kind of rigger you want to be. For example, you could be a support rigger whose job is to get the team and their gear into and out of locations. In that case, you'll want something like a nice armored car, such as the Rover 2068, a Federate-Boeing Kull or Ares Air Supply for delivering gear as needed, a Renraku Manservant-3 for loading whatever you might need into the kull/air supply while you're away and a gun platform of some sort. The air supply does quite well at the last part since, with a body of 6, it can take up to 18 armor and multiple/reinforced weapons mounts. With 18 hardened armor, it'll take a Gauss rifle to mess with it.

Where does it say added armor or armor 9 is hardened? I've been playing it as normal based on what I'd read, but it wouldn't be the first rule I've missed.

All vehicle armor is functionally Hardened, as in any attack with a base + net hits DV lower than the Armor rating just bounces.

... [doh]
ok. yeah. thanks. I've been playing that part, just hadn't added 2+2 yet.
-
Yeah, it's one of the reasons a fully combat kitted Otomo is really fragging scary.
It's going to be pretty much immune to 99% of firearms a Runner is likely to be carrying. And still gets to look like a regular dude.

Oh, yeah sorry. Not explicitly hardened, but cars don't take stun, so if it doesn't break through the armor, it's ineffective.
-
I've said it before, but vehicles not taking stun is a separate rule.
Vehicle don't take Stun. They ALSO are not affected by any base+net hit DV lower than their armor.
Assuming the two rules are linked is not an unreasonable extrapolation, but it's not what the text says.

If vehicular armor isn't a good reason for always packing a clip of AV, I don't know what is ...

Just remember to use them sparingly - those things aren't cheap, or easy to come by!

SSC 1 and 2 - what ever happened to that guy?
-
Well SSC2 was the same, just with updated stats. It wasn't like it was a new version of the catalog released later in-game.
And I'm not sure.
-
No idea, but Nightfire is still around.
-
Last time Neon Samurai popped up was in Shodows of Asia (p.168), discussing Renraku's wireless networking project.
-
So, who knows from there. Wonder if he's still pissed at Ares? Wonder if Ares is right about him? Weird, hard to tell what's truth and what's fiction constantly, doesn't it?
-
Heck, don't even know if he survived the Crash 2.0 and Winternight's attacks.
-
Still want to know what happened to Wolf and Raven... And Kid Stealth.
-
and kid stealths LEGS!! loved those psycho cyber digitigrade legs!

Oh, I bet the Murder Machine survived...
