Title: TM (and maybe rigger) toys
Post by: kirk on <09-19-11/0725:42>
(Dunno why, but TMs really call me. Someday, maybe, I'll dig into other archetypes.)

The pain of the TM is that you have to sacrifice so many other skills to be one. It's the reason you tend to JUST hack and rig. The problem is two fold. First, it can be frustrating being left out of the 'fun'. Second, even when it's not a good GM is going to push you out of your comfort zone. What I'd like to do is discuss toys, tools, and perhaps tricks the TM (and perhaps rigger) can have in anticipation. I'll mention a short handful, but would love to see other's.

I've mentioned my drone-pistol in other threads. Take a weapon with a smartgun, stick a pilot on it, and ta-daaa it's a drone that can be fired with gunnery+command. There are two problems with this. The first, RAW, is that it's got to be fired from AR/meatspace. That means meat initiative and IP AND complex action. That means, given the typical need to ready weapon first, it's the second combat turn and one shot per combat turn. The second problem comes when I put on my GM hat. "You're aiming it how? From your arm? And you think this is going to magically get your weapon aligned? uh-huh. Well, I've got a few negatives to toss in here..."

New preference: a steampunk dragon drone (Attitude). For the GM itch, no weapon that can't be brought to -4 concealability (and it has to be brought there to avoid "issues"). The fact it's on a 3 meter tether does not matter for this situation. Pull the flamethrower, replace it with (my preference) a Defiant EX that's got chameleon coat (my requirement), and you've got a 1550¥ Taser-armed drone that you can take most places without a lot of notice or bother. Bring two (call them Jhereg if you wish), and use "single command to multiple devices" to bring down just about anything short of a high-force spirit. If money's tight use a holdout (the Fichetti Needler, for example) instead. Regardless, oomphing the sensors and adding sensor software is just a bonus.

So, what's yours?

The second toy is the one I actually think everyone should have. 2600¥ gives you a drone with Profession Autosoft (first aid) (3), a medkit (6), an ambulance gurney, and a movement speed of 40. It's pretty much designed to treat a downed metahuman, load her in the gurney, and extract to a designated medevac point. It doesn't care about territory, either. Note that I added the autosoft, which cost 600. Add another 300¥ for gecko trips and it's the ultimate rescue drone.

You can't make your own for less. Walker mode and two mechanical limbs on anything is (4,000 + 500x Body) ¥ and 6 slots. The EVO Orderly is nominally 5,500 just for the mods.

I've mentioned it before, but either the Smart Firing Platform or the Arachne drone allow a self-aiming gun with no rules quibbles.

The Arachne can even crawl around with Gecko Tips, so you can have it perch on the troll's head and serve as a turret.

I'd quibble about the platform, I'm afraid.

The arachne's great once you can get past 26F availability.

Why? It's a Pilot 3 turret drone. It just can't move.

Eh. 14 Negotiate dice and a coupla weeks waiting time. It's not hard to get 14 social dice in SR.

Carrying it around to use is the awkward part. It's only 360 horizontal (to plane of head).

14 dice for a technomancer? riiiight. I know, the answer is pay your face, but still...

I also tend to twitch at the F portion. I know the RAW doesn't clearly support it, but a 26F should be a little more difficult to get than a 26R.

Smart Firing Platform: This is a non-mobile robotic tripod (p. 323) equipped with a remote-control pivot that allows for a 180-degree firing arc (and a 60-degree inclination). A smartgun-equipped weapon mounted to the platform can be fired remotely or by the platform’s Pilot. The platform is equipped with Pilot 3, Sensor 3, and one Targeting autosoft (p. 246) at Rating 3.

It's a tripod. It should be about as awkward to use as any other tripod.

Say, 2 Charisma + 2 Negotiate + 6 Empathy Software + 4 Street Cred = 14 dice.

But yeah, there's no rules on making F legality stuff any harder to get than R legality. Really, the rules only treat R and F as relevant when it comes to being charged with illegal possession, not for obtaining the item to begin with.

re the tripod, that's my point, actually. First, how do you carry a closed tripod? That is, what position do you carry it? Slung across your back? Carried horizontal to the ground?

60 degree inclination - is that 60 up AND 60 down, 60 total...? Based on normal tripods AND on the tripod statement it references, I'd guess 60 total -- call it 10 or 15 down and the rest up. So you've got it slung across your back at ~30 degrees off vertical meaning "that area" is outside weapon arc.

It's doable, but it's got its own GM discussion issues.

re TM's 14 dice, I'm always scraping so hard for BP I never bother with negotiation, but that works.

Give a ferret drone chamelion coating and storage have it legge out the pay load for the run so the team if caught still can get a pay day!

Ferret 10 slots  3,000

Smuggler's compartment shielded x 3 slot 3 9,000
Vehicle tag Eraser 1 slot 250
