Hi
Just got a thought and will share it before the thought police comes knocking on my door.
Has anyone tried to make a homepage or such with materials on, that the groups hacker could explore doing game from a laptop and thus get real with his hacking?
Hope I'm making sense :o
Regards
Rasmus

I generally try and have printed or digitial handouts available yes. I considered having a whole directory structure available at one point but I discarded the idea.

Back in the early 90s (whe the web was young) I had a GM that set up a directory on his PC with the files were were after during the run on it. It became a regular thing. Admitted, it was fairly primative since the wealth of images videos and such were not avaliable like they are today, but he did a really good job with it, including thing slike hidden files and directories, interesting dead ends (for instance, there was a hidden node of ASCII Art nudes), fake e-mails and a number of image files (he was a photographer and into image manipulation). He even had some files and directories password protected and others PGP encrypted to simulate ICe with dice rolls getting the password or keys.
Best one he did was he produced a rather large sound file that, when played to a modem (to, not through) decoded into a a neat text file that we needed. IIR, he got the idea from the Information Society album that did the same trick with a "hidden track."
These days it would look really primative, but back then it was extremely cool and "cutting edge." Unfortunately, hard disk limits meant he couldn't have a lot of them on his HD at any given time (usually 2 was his limit since he needed most of the drive for his schoolwork) and 1.44 meg floppies couldn't contain them, so they were deleted to make space for the next one.

^sounds badass. (At least back then)
I did drop something similiar, I forget the specific name for it but there when a Hacker examined a file I had him roll. What I don't remember i think he had some background hacking knowledge skill or something like that and he rolled decent so I told him what he thought the file might be that large for. It was because it was hiding text in the picture file. Old school but hey, awesome for a secret message. :D

The thing to be careful of would be inadvertently supplanting your characters' skills with your players' skills. A character might be better at hacking or rooting through data than his player (or vice versa!). In other words, even if the players are rooting through an actual directory file, there should be a Browse+Data Search roll in there somewhere.

"I pull up the system file ID listings. That should show even hidden files, as the system has to ensure that they aren't overwritten." "What's your character's computer and data search skill levels?" "One and one." "You pull up a Text-Based Command window and type DIR, and think you're a 1337 Haxxorz." "Damnit!"

lol^
Nice.

To be fair, that's all you need with the high-end programs available in SR4A. Damned skript kiddies and their commlinks... You used to have to WORK at a secure system!
Just ask Bull. When he wakes up from his nap.

*pokes Bull whoever he is and runs*
How do i poke him you ask? Oh i do the old fashion Pinging. That will get his attention the kind where you add the end tag -(insert letter) to endlessly ping the person. xD
(on a side note I'll have to look into those programs... o.O')

Zilfer, if you don't know who Bull is, you got a lot of reading to do... A whole lot. :P (Here's a hint: He's the best ork hacker you never met!).

Considering I've only picked up playing Shadowrun within the last month or so? I'd say so. That's why i'm pile driving questions home in this DM section. XD

Bull is one of the "newer" ShadowTalkers on the JackPoint, and was one of the ShadowTalkers on it's predecessor, ShadowLand BBS. He also posts here and on the Dumpshock, and is in charge of the current season of Shadowrun Missions.

I see. Is dumpshock like an alternate forum for Shadowrun btw?
-
It was the officially unofficial forums for the longest time (http://forums.dumpshock.com/index.php?), then CGL came out with their own at last.
It's a den of scum and villainy. I should know, I'm a member. ;D

That's the general idea tho!
Besides if i'm wearing soap none of you will touch me. :p
*continues to use soap bombs, and other cleaning products to keep you at bay*

Stop it. That's annoying. Most of us bathe.
That won't stop any of the regulars. At all.
