Title: Calling all serial smiters!!
Post by: nojosecool on <08-21-11/1525:36>
Greetings my fellow Shadowrun fans!

I'm posting today because I recently posted a joke in another board (see "Post your real life stats!" in Character Creation and Critique) which nobody has told me is in bad taste.  Had someone expressed that they were offended or that they were somehow disgusted with my joke, I would have considered editing or erasing my post.  Instead, one person (I'm certain it's just one person because nobody's even reading this topic anymore and the joke is funnier than it is offensive) has been seeking me out and trolling the smite button at every opportunity.  Over the last week, my smite has doubled from -7 (all of which I'm sure I earned with biting sarcasm or frustration during rules debates) to a whopping -14.  I have said nothing shocking, controversial, or even sarcastic in probably the last 3 weeks except for in this one thread, so my extra -7 couldn't really have come from anywhere else.

Whoever you are, get bent.  You accomplish nothing by sending my peers on this forum the false message that I'm a troll.  I'm not interested in getting into a smite war with you, so I thought that calling you out for the coward you are would be the most appropriate course of action.

Hugs and kisses,

-nojosecool

On a metaforum note, I think the smite feature is being abused as it is right now and would like to ask the moderators if we can limit smiting to one smite per post per user.  Sure, if someone's really determined they can still be a serial smiter, but this does put a hard cap on the smiting to however many posts a person has made.  Plus, it adds a few more steps and makes it less convenient to do so  which ought to discourage it.  Maybe putting up a counter for how many smites/applauses a person has made would be another good feature.  I'm not sure if any of this is possible, but they're features I'd like to see.

Thanks Mods!

Hey, watch what you're calling a troll here.

Some of my best friends are trolls.  One rolls doobies the size of an elf's forearm, man!  Now that's a fattie!

I'm just trying to figure out how my score ended up the way it did.

I guess folks get "Applaud" and "Smite" confused fairly often.  :P

Does it really matter what your rep is? It's already limited to once per hour I believe. The only way to really stop smite spam is to get rid of smite and negative rep. Otherwise there will be assholes that try to break the system.

I know what you're talking about though. I feel like if I actually take part in a debate I'm going to come out with three to five smites.

Meh.  I'm not even really mad about it.  Just saying that (EDIT: my smite stalker needs a new hobby.)

While I agree and empathize with your general sentiment and frustration, here, just remember that being irritated over someone humping your rep score into the ground isn't a free pass to violate the TOS, and outright insult that person.  Doing so makes you likely to hit your rep where it really matters (IE, with the mods, who can shut down your ability to post, kick you out the door, etc, etc).

You might want to edit that last post, this being the case, before one of the real grown-ups comes along and spots it, and especially before whoever's already got a bone to pick with you (as evidenced by them poking your rep time and again) sees that comment and eagerly clicks the report button.

While I can certainly empathize with how you feel, I do have to say that sometimes, no matter what, something you say is going to be disagreeable to person(s) on the forums. right now, the settings are that you have to have at least 10 posts before you can applaud/smite and you have to wait one hour between clicking on either.

The rep system is actually working pretty well, from my point of view. And that's from a guy that's got the most smites on the board (at last count, at least).

Which reminds me, I have to smite you due to having to go "Not that FastJack, the other one" too many times!

Don't put too much stock in your rep scores.  People will smite you because they don't like your side in a debate (even if you stay within bounds of civility.) They will smite you because they don't like your avatar, your sig, whatever.  Most people use the system as intended, I think, but one person with a axe to grind and a hint of ocd can skew the numbers.  Because its anonymous and thus comes with no accountability some people will do nutty things with it.  File it under doesn't matter.

Yeah, that's pretty much why the rep system doesn't work. Using Fastjack as an example: that's only about a month's work of smiting, for someone who could smite 8 times a day at more-than-an-hour intervals; pretty trival in this age of smartphones if anyone cared. So did 195 people smite him for stuff? Or did one person with an axe to grind smite him 195 times? I don't know, so it makes caring about reputation pretty pointless.

If you could see what posts got smited/applauded, that would at least be useful. Then I could at least investigate why someone was universally loved/hated and see if it was a lot of different people applauding or smiting different posts, or a small number of people abusing the system.

am wondering if that ( ID the smited post) is possible? though i assume it would make a massive pain in the rear for someone.

I generally try to avoid these forum-politics threads, though I've been to a few communities with rep systems.  I've never seen one which can't be exploited, but I've seen a few which don't allow you to neg-rep someone without leaving a comment, which then only the rep'd individual can read.  That user could then flag such neg-rep comments as inflammatory if appropriate, and then a Moderator could view it as well, and the Mod would be able to see the source of the rep comment.
Not a perfect system, and it might be a headache and three quarters to implement here, but I just thought I'd share.  It might at least reduce any "serial smiting," especially if you make it clear that blank or nonsensical neg-rep comments aren't permitted.

On the flip-side, it didn't stop threads like this from cropping up everywhere, and people would often hi-jack threads just to bitch about some comment left in their neg-rep box.  (A counter to that might be to create a rep-specific forum, for discussing such things, but that probably also has 'Powder Keg' written all over it.)

I still think the rep system works pretty well... You might get a couple where people get an axe to grind and it shoots your negatives down, but if you're contributing to a lot of conversations and people like what you're saying, the positive bear that out. I know in my case, I was averaging about 2 rep hits (either an applaud or smite) a post when the forums first started and I spent more time chatting and less time moderating. I'd like to think that it was an influencing factor of my being asked to be a moderator since it showed that not only did I interact a lot, but people were listening to me.

The charisma score you attributed to yourself exceeds that of Hestaby and Lowfyr's.
If -WHEN- they find out you claim your mojo is greater than theirs, a little loss of reputation will be least of your concern.
Of course, your superb woman pleasing skill might hold off Hestaby. But Lowfyr, well... he might be a bit upset.

<-- See that blemish on my otherwise perfect score? I got that BY ACCIDENT!

Well, gender is a social inference and is independent of biological sex (though there are plenty of arguable links), especially in the 6th World with all its transhumanistic splendour.  So generally, the gender a dragon (or anyone) presents as-is their gender.  Although, one needs to bear in mind a few exceptions, such as:  Identity crisis, intentional misdirection, differing understanding of cultural norms of that particular gender, comfort level, "trying to prove a point," etc.

So, based on the limited evidence presented in this thread, I would hazard that all dragons have the same sex, but different genders.
(This doesn't necessarily invalidate Chrona's statement any either.)

probably ironic coming from someone new, but rep shouldn't matter. I really don't look at a person's rep when i'm reading their post or responding to them. >.> FastJack i've seen all around this board and only NOW did i just notice his -150 something rep.

Too bad + wasn't your Street cred, and the - your Noterioty. heh just imagine the amount of Dice FastJack would have to roll to intimidate someone. (very laughable in my mind imagining someone having to roll that much dice. xD) Good luck fastjack!

Dude, I've barely even been active the last few days and I still pick up 3-5 smite per day.  Like I said in another thread, there's nothing on this Earth that is going to stop the smite train if you've upset a certain type of user.  If you want I can sit and troll the Who's Online on a day when I have nothing else going on, identify which user is smitestalking you, but knowing who it is (and retaliating) isn't going to stop it or slow it down.  It's the nature of the beast.

Hmmm, the smite-bleeding seems to have stopped (although I expect I'll pick up a few for my treatise in Pet Peeves).  Looks like my primary smitestalker has gone inactive.  A pity, it would have been much better for them to just lay off the vengeance and remain an active commentator.
