Title: Awakening in Shadowrun
Post by: Redwulfe on <07-12-11/1253:40>
I don't really know where this question should go. If someone has the latent awakening merit and awakens in game, what is it like? does random magic happen around him does he suddenly slip into the astral, or does he have to wait for someone to clue him in? "Dude your magics showing." It was just something I was thinking about recently. Is it described in any of the books?

I'm guessing that would be up to you and the GM... but I am thinking it would involve a high stress situation where you sorta black out and use magic to defend yourself or people you care about.

This.

Like a lot of other questions that pop up on the internet, your best bet is to talk to your GM, not us.  Every character's Awakening should be different than everyone else's -- it should be unique to that character, the feel of game the GM is going for, and the fashion in which they Awaken (are they a Mage suddenly snuffing someone out like a candle with a Manabolt that then sits them on their ass with drain?  Are they an adept that caves in someone's ribs like matchsticks with an accident Critical Strike, in a friendly sparring match?)...it's an intensely individual experience, that should be talked over between GM and player to see what's gonna work for the story they're trying to tell.

in my opinion the funest way to awaken is in the most extream way and any way it happens there should be massive emotional trauma or stress induced. But as always if you talk to your GM about it or if you are the GM and you talk to the player about it you can find a good and personal way to become awakened.

Cool thanks guys, I thought it was something like that but I was curious if it was described somewhere.

Thanks again.

It's a very individual thing.  Some folks suddenly see the Astral Plane.  Others have their imaginary friend from childhood suddenly appear.  Some have spells just spontaneously happen.  Some, like my intro for Pup The Dog Shaman (http://forums.shadowrun4.com/index.php?topic=3520.0), have a full on spirit quest.

It all varies very very much.  And, yes, one person might actually have seen that music video.  :P

A) I lol'ed so hard you get a +1
B) Yes, I remember and saw the video many moons ago
C) I think this is a perfect PC-awakening for such a Trid-heavy environment as SR4 2073

+1 for that one as well....

Mental note: Bursting into spontaneous belly-laughs in a quiet government office may impact colleague perceptions of my rapidly waning sanity....

It actually was described in several novels. Robert N Charettes "Never Deal With A Dragon" comes to mind, which was one of the best novels because it introduced many of the Shadowrun concepts and the world itself very well. You should be able to get it from eBay.
