Title: Shadowrun as a Play-by-chat
Post by: orewashinigamiza on <06-19-11/1841:30>
I'm curious on the general opinion on something.  I've played in a few play-by-chat games in the past, where the game is a continuously running game and you can log in at anytime and play with anyone there.  This is done with other tabletops like Exalted, Legend of the Five Rings, and the World of Darkness game series.  Do you think it'd work for Shadowrun?

Of course, obviously Shadowrun's biggest thing is the run itself.  How would this work?  The general concept I had in mind is the setting would be some fairly large city, but instead of having only being a runner open as an option, also having the option of working for the corps as well.  There would be corps estabilished by a GM team, players working within them would most likely be security forces though I can see a plethora of roles being possible.  The idea of playing in a corp was introduced in the Corporate Guide, and something I thought was neat.  Still, it'd be a nice balance to the option of being a runner.

As for plots and whatnot, with the setting being a city, there'd be places (clubs for example) where people can go to socialize (i.e. normal chat, meet and greets, etc.) but there would also be missions run by GMs.  More likely, at least for the runner scene, you could have players run their own missions for eachother as well (that way players keep active), granted there would need to be some controls set up so that it can't be easily abused.  Perhaps a brief overview might be required to be submitted.

As for xp, a flat amount of xp would be given every week to all players.

This is all very rudimentry, just tossing something out.  What do you guys think?

Wait, so this is chat like Skype or IM, or play-by-post? Because people have been playing Shadowrun PbP games for two decades.

If it's chat, I'm just curious how it would work insofar as people jumping in and out. PbP offers persistence. Chat, however, seems to be entirely contingent on the whims of the people who happen to be in the chatroom at the same time.
