I'm trying to get a good idea as to what an Ork actually looks like, but despite being the most common metahuman variant in seattle I'm finding surprisingly few good pictures of them. Basically just the Gunslinger, Hacker, Sprawl Ganger, and the one picture on page 72 that looks like a Genie, and most of those are drawn in a more impressionistic style that makes it hard to picture what they 'should' look like. Are there any pictures in any of the books that give a (for lack of a better term) more realistic depiction of an ork, maybe beside a human or elf for comparison purposes? Or are they so close to human looking (aside from the teeth and the ears and the tendency to be on the Schwarzenegger end of the body scale of course) that they could plausibly be in many of the pictures?
-
They're pretty much on par with humans. On avreage, they tend to be just a smidge taller on average, and a bit bulkier (higher natural muscle mass). Otherwise though, yeah, they're just a bit tuskier than normal. :)
-
I prefer Alex Ross's images (http://www.alexrossart.com/artforsale.asp?sc=ARSR1) from first edition. Otherwise, yes, they're just bigger humans.
Pthbbbbt.

You forgot hairier as well. :P
EDIT: Which scares me when I consider Italian Orks.
...
Yes, I'm going to the Special Hell.

Several references in the fiction about a musky odor as well, but that could be isolated to particular authors :)

"Earthy" might be a more polite way to put it.
And when you're talking to an Ork, you try to be as polite as possible. Unless you're a Troll. :P
-
Ross' art does an excellent job of portraying orks. I also like the picture I use for my avatar, which if I remember correctly is from the 2nd edition core book.

orks are smaller less horny trolls :P

Troll: "Me so horn-ed, me hurt you long time!"

There are lots of pictures of orks in the books, but unfortunately not very many that are done well (or maybe the bad ones just stand out more). Say what you want about the cover to Arsenal, at least it has an ork woman with realistically depicted tusks. Some of the other depictions of orks don't resemble orks so much as they resemble radioactive mutants - especially the teeth. Some of them don't look like they would be able to close their mouths with all of those misshapen fangs scraggling out in every direction.

Friend, if you need DA to picture a female Ork, you're just not thinking sexy enough yet. ;)

You ever notice they're mexican in half of the stories?

Yeah, I do detect some ethnic tendencies like that. Of course the Irish are Elves too.

Not all elves. :P

Haha yeah. I'm just waiting to see a Hacker Troll. :P Just for hilarity's sake.

I'd make one. ;D

There's been a handful over the years (Well, Troll Deckers, anyway). There was one or two in the SR TCG as well.
And hell, these days, there's nothing stopping a troll hacker, since attributes don't play into hacking at all. *sigh*
That's one of the reasons I originally played an Ork Decker though. It kinda played against stereotype.
-
One of my characters I write is an Ork that sounds like a Barrens Trog, moves like a Barrens Trog, and seems like one of the people that the stereotype was written for. It's actually difficult for me to write him as I have to slowly pronounce and spell his sentences phonetically.
He's also exceptionally well read. Even more so than his highly educated norm chummer.
Based him off of a few folks I know from Ontario (And one fellow that was originally from New York.).
-
One concept that really caught me by surprise was the Maori mystic adepts (mainly trolls, who developed a martial art to take advantage of troll physiology) from Shadows of Asia. I assumed that the Maori would have a higher concentration of elves for some reason.
-
Haha yeah. I'm just waiting to see a Hacker Troll. :P Just for hilarity's sake.
I sort of made one... but he turned out to be my comically incompetent rigger, NML (soon to die or be retired and the inspiration for my informal checklist of things you better not forget about at character creation).
-
I agree hacking should have a little bit of attribute stuff in it but I love playing anything as an ork.
-
Ya know, is it me or have Orcs become the new "it" race? In various media, it used to be the elves that got all the lovin, now it seems that Orcs are getting a lot of attention. Take a look (often at your own peril) at the various (and Im using this term VERY loosely, but to each their own) artits and art sites and see how the orc is protrayed. Games like SR and WoW have had a BIG influence on this, IMHO.
Whereas the elves were the "pretty ideal", Orcs seem to become the counter culture to that as a more...rebel kind thing. A lot seem to be fed up with "pretty" and want more "bad-ass".
In short, it's good to be an orc nowadays.

Orkploitation.

I was an Ork before Orks were cool. :)

I made one when my friend's sister wanted to play. She would accept no substitute. Granted, everything she did made absoluteley no sense. During combat in Food Fight 4.0, she grabbed a dozen cakes, hide in the bathroom, and hack the system to do things that were detrimental to us.
It wasn't pretty.
-

Bull
Bull, do you play an ork hipster? ;D
Also I prefer to write ork instead of orc. And I don't do it cuz I think they're badasses I just always loves the whole "goblin" kinda look. But Trolls are boring to me. But D and D Trolls are bad ass and you DO NOT wanna fight em without some source of fire or acid. Imagine a giant troll (I know they already are big but make em like 10 foot big) then think of how starfish regenerate and speed that up. You cut off the arm and it grows back and the severed arm grows a troll lol. But I digress ORKS ALL THE WAY.
-
@Bull: Orks have always been cool.
@Mystic: It's about time that fantasy artists got off of elves. DeviantArt and the other social art sites are really just following in the footsteps of some of the greats (I'm thinking Vallejo). Who wants to look at a frail, fragile little elfling when ork is an option?
-
Just watch out for those ork love bites....where necking can put you in the hospital.
-

Bah, I've always loved Trog Rock!
-
I keep thinking of a line from The Godfather. "They're animals anyway. Let them lose their souls."
-
Mmm, sexy, sexy orks... No wonder all the PCs in my current group seems to have some kind of ork-fetish.
-
Room for a litter. ;D

I'm playing a Troll Mage.
It's pretty entertaining, actually.
"Shoot the Mage, first, then take down that damn Troll with the top hat!"
"Uh, sir - he IS the Mage."
"New plan. Run!"

Nice to be the magical support AND meat-shield.

Elves I can understand. But the Mafia being Irish just confuses me. Did all the Sicilians die or something?

You have a problem with the mob upgrading to Irish?

Here is the Wikipedia entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_Mob (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_Mob), for Irish crime families. They've apparently been here a while.

Nah, just Curious as to how it happened and where all the Italian ones went.
grimjaws: I know there's an Irish Mob in the US, but what mostly confuses me is why they're using Italian Lingo as if they were the Sicilian mob in SR. Unless they do that IRL too. In which case, never mind.
-
In a lot of places, the Italian and Irish mobs amalgamated in a variety of ways.
After a few decades (centuries?) of intermarriage, things can get really confusing. Anyhow, everyone knows Micks breed like rabbits. :P (Now, if you excuse me, I have to go to my local Irish pub and tell that joke, see how well it goes down.).

When I do it, my I be in Heaven a full half-hour before the Devil knows I'm dead.
-
Mmmm.... Ork chicks... None of that androgyny those elves go for. Tuskers are women all the WAY! On a side note, you don't wanna be holding their hand, or even being in shooting range, when she's popping out a litter you caused.

Orxploitation for the sexy.

Personally, I think Trolls, especially female trolls, have gotten the short-shrift in Shadowrun art more then Orks.
-
Hmm... Good point... I can;t remember any female trolls in the artwork. Of course, I also don't think about what female trolls look like, either. Weird. I know there's a picture of a female metavarient troll in the Runner's Companion...

In the second Dawn of the Artifacts story, there is a picture a female troll smuggler. We also had in SR4 and SR4A
the street Shaman in both is a female troll...but, to my knowledge, that's it.
-
I don't think she had any pictures, but there' s also Zumi from the Introduction's fiction.
Poor Zumi. :'(

Odd. The more I think about it, the more it bugs me. Almost every team has a troll on it, no matter how rare trolls are, but they always seem to be male, big, and dumb. I guess it could be because the very idea of trolls is a very masculine one. But, I really want more female trolls, just from a roleplaying aspect. Great, another RP table crusade. Trying to convince female players to make more trolls....
-
Our player (yes, she's female) is playing a female troll that believes she's very cute (her mother told her so!). And she'll beat the snot out of anyone that disagrees with her.
-
Just a different perception of beauty. And if you think the Internet has a Rule 34, wait until you meet reality! :p

My pet NPC shaman is a female troll....the face's immediate thought was to try to hook her up with the PC troll street sammy :-P She was offended and told him off....something about not all trolls like other trolls :-)

She likes a good 200 lbs. Dwarf with a thick, full beard you can grip?
-
Handlebars... the ladies all love handlebars... ;)
-
Or so says a friend of mine that actually grew a handlebar 'stash. Of course, the man makes me look like a square of a straight, so take that as you will.

As a proud member of Beard Team USA and the owner of a set of handlebars that rival many childrens' bikes, I'll back his claim.

That female Troll which Charybdis posted a link to . . . her skin is WAY too smooth. Where's the dermal plating? I mean no offense to the artist, but she looks more like a bulky human Trollposer. Although she might be a Fomri metavarient, I suppose. They apparently lack the dermal deposits.
A couple of drawings of Orcs which I like: Runner's Companion pages 138, 141, and 145. The Firefighter, Ork Nation Organizer, and the Supply Sergeant. There's also the Squatter on page 144, though he kinda falls in to the "mutant" category which someone mentioned here earlier. I did notice that there seem to be VERY few female orcs represented, and even fewer female trolls. Although, I believe Zumi is there, on pages 5 and 8 of the core rulebook. The second drawing you can even see the slight hint of breasts under/behind her outstretched arm.
My first Shadowrun Character was a troll artist. Decent Logic and Intuition . . . but insanely high Charisma! For a troll, at least. He was quite intimidating, that was for sure . . . especially considering what he used for his 'artistic expression.'

Sort of a random pondering.
The art of Hobgoblins in Runner's Companion are sort of inconsistent - not a criticism, mind you, just observing. Just as the various depictions of any of the Metahumans/Metavariants vary from artist to artist, and in their level of consistency with the text descriptions, the Hobgoblin art is highly varied (well, considering there's only like three pics, total, in all the books, of a Hobgoblin).
So if I mark the handful of pictures in RC up to artistic license, my interpretation is that instead of typical Ork tusks, Hobgoblins (having the Fangs Quality) have a more predatory tooth configuration - more like a wolf, big cat, or maybe even Vampire than, say a tusked creature like a boar. My reasoning is that creatures with tusks use them very differently than creatures with fangs...as Hobgoblins can actually use a bite attack, like a predatory critter, and not a tusky critter (boars, elephants, etc, use their tusks to gore, not chomp), they don't actually have the signature tusks of a normal Ork.
And yes. I am well aware I'm totally over-thinking this.
What else is new? ;D

you've seen how the Human race can vary appearance, right?
Metahumanity takes it to a WHOLE 'nuther level. Do as thou wilt, mon ami ;)
