Title: What about gangs?
Post by: Little D on <06-08-11/1918:41>
Hey everyone.

I'm not sure if there is a thread on this so... feel free to move / destroy this if necessary.

Is there a list of the better-known gangs in SR?  I wanted to start off my new players with a "Warriors"-style campaign where they would be trapped VERY far away from home and have to walk back, crossing through several rival gang's territories.

If I can believe the sega genesis game, there is a gang called the Halloweeners.  ...That's about all I know.

Any little thing would help!

Thank you.

There is a section on gangs in the back of Vice. Also there is usually a section in the city guide books that include the other criminal groups.

Sounds like an awesome campaign!  I thought about including a similar scenario in my lowlife campaign.  I always felt like Shadowrun's gangs were similar to Warriors and Gangs of New York, with their wierdo themes.  on that note all the seattle sourcebooks made include gangs.  Seattle 2072 includes a gang section and has them listed by tiers. of course these are the ones that make the radar, I am sure there are plenty of small time street gangs looking to make their mark.

One difference between SR and The Warriors is, depending on edition, individuals go-gangs will take on the Metroplex Guard and totally fuck them up. And this happens All. The. Time.

I never saw Warriors, so maybe the movie answers this: what's to stop them from stealing a car? This sounds like it would best as a one shot with pregens.

They pitched that idea originally but the script only ended up being ten minutes of screen time....I jest... They were young foolish street punks on the run, things move pretty fast for them, perhaps they never thought of it, none of them knew how to hotwire or drive, or there was never an opportunity.

Maybe instead of it being "you're stranded and have to walk" it could be "you're jumping into gang X, and the initiation is to go through gangs a, b, and c to get to the base." That way if they do stop and steal a car, they fail. It could be a pretty cool start for a street level campaign.

Pride?

Only a wimp of a gang would drive.  It takes guts to WALK all the way back to Coney Island.  Subways are OK, as they're major ambush points.

Or make the only car available (I assume there's not that many cars in Z-zones) an old Lone Star (or other police company) car.  Do you really want to drive through gang territory in regular, non-armoured, single police vehicle?  ;D  ;D

Or a minivan.

Honestly, how can you look tough in a minivan?

That, and I'm pretty sure gangs shoot at minivans just as a general rule.  :P

I would if it was legal to mount machineguns on cars here.  I mean, you don't see anything beyond them and most people driving them must have the incompetent (pilot ground vehicle) negative quality.

Here's an awesome resource.  Dunno how many of the gangs are canon, but it's still awesome.

Blue Triangles are gangs.

Absosmurfly beautiful.

I didn't check them all, but a lot of the gangs listed are canon, as are at least a couple of the buildings I looked at.

I use this map ( http://shadowrun.chinagreenelvis.com/map/ ) it's pretty much the same concept but with zoom it and out and slightly bigger.

Maybe none of the gangers have the skill to steal a car and they could start out in a "civilized" part of town having to deal with the wanna be corp brat gangs first, maybe "the orphans".  If you don't have the right skills you don't want to steal cars in the wrong part of town or else its nothing but worrying about getting wracked by the cops.  Love the idea.  Great movie.
