So I am finally going to get to play SR4 for a change. My topic title stems from the character concept I am going for in this game, an extreme sports enthusiast/Athlete's Way adept from the Philippines.
The character's favorite sport is surfing. Running a Google search turns up quite a few beaches in the Seattle area, but I am not really that familiar with the area aside from SR books past and present, and a two-day visit over sixteen years ago. So I was wondering if there's anyone on this board who is familiar with the area, and which of these beaches might still exist and be good surf spots in 2072.

Entering the Water ANYWHERE near america or europe or asia is mostly like entering a mixture between the gutter, the sewer and a chemical plant . .
And then you have to deal with anything that can live in there . . all of which likes to eat meat . .
-
So surfing's an extreme sport? Watch out for the toxic shamans; Charlie does surf.

Pretty much, yeah . . .
Generally speaking, sea water aint.
Meaning it's basically anything but water. If anything, it's a toxic sludge with a water like consistence . .
Of course, there are SOME places in the world, where it ain't all THAT bad . . but there you still have to deal with stuff simly swimming along and eating you as an afterthought . .
-
That might be your take on things, but I'm not inclined to agree with you completely. Especially with places like Shek-O popping up in Hong Kong.
Of course the wildlife is probably more dangerous but there's bound to be some places left that people can surf, swim, etc.
Why bother taking Swimming, or Water Sprite if that's truly the case? :)
-
Because, if you have insulated gear and breathing aparatus that saves you from contact with water, you CAN actually still stay in there for longer times than normal.
But surfing? Yeah, right, if you wanna go out looking like Jacques Custoe going down to shake hands with the fishes, sure, be my guest.
Furthermore, of course there are going to be some bodies of water that are still mostly clean, but those are lakes and rivers in the woods/mountains, where close to nobody ever goes, aside from some natives . .
-
Again, I don't agree with you entirely on your points and that's cool. Let's say for the sake of the original question that your Sixth World doesnt entirely match up with the one I am about to be playing in. And that means that my question still stands and that you aren't really equipped to answer it.
So anybody else have any ideas?

"Surfing? Not on your life. Just yesterday something slithered onto a bridge, ate a few cars, burped, took a few Panther rounds from a Ares Citymaster, flipped it the bird, and went back into the water. I ain't fragging with that!"

What book was that from Can?

I just took a random comment Dirk threw out in 2XS and went from there.

Ah, thought i'd read something like that in the shadowtalk of one of the older critter books . .

Definitely, the waters near Seattle are toxic. Perhaps, you can can you grew up on an island in the Bermuda Triangle or Dragon Triangle for the Pacific. Mysterious things happen there. In my write up for my game, the waters there are pristine, magic is wild and the Kraken isn't mythical anymore.
-
Kraken is actually good when you bread and deep fry it. The hard part is not overcooking it, as it gets rubbery.

Good quote Ray. But then there's this little section on Shek O in Runner Havens:
"I’m not sure “Hang Ten” translates well to Cantonese, but Shek O and the nearby Big Wave Bay are a popular surfing destination in Asia, a century after the sport was first introduced to the region. The waves here are considered the best in Hong Kong; corporate-endorsed surfers engage in highly publicized Runner Havens Hong Kong."
And then the shadowtalk from Ecotope immediately following:
"The tanned and bronze-haired Chinese surfers in Shek O make great scenery, but keep in mind that they aren’t all as corporate as their logo-covered wetsuits might make them seem."
Both seem to add up to suggest a picture that runs quite counter to the one you guys are painting, that there simply isn't any surfing going on at all anywhere and no beach would be safe to do so on.
"Corporate-endorsed surfers" means there's some kind of money in it, and some kind of a market for gear for the sport, and that the sport itself continues on in 207X. "Wetsuits" means that most likely there are plenty of beaches around that are not toxic sludge dumps that require a full environmental suit to surf in. And that most likely aren't infested with critters that will eat anyone approaching the shoreline, either.
So if anybody would like to discuss what specific beaches in Seattle might still be good to surf on, from a native's POV as I posited in my original post, I'd love to.
If there are any here?
-
Hey, I grew up inland. The closest I've been to an ocean is the Great Lakes.
...
No, not true, I've been to Florida once.
-
Did you surf? Any good beaches?
I'm sure that my surfer will be traveling ;)
-
And you wouldn't you know, Shek O contains the ONLY surfing reference I can find at all in any of the 4e books...
I'll keep looking but if anyone who's interested finds another reference, could you point it my way?
Thanks ahead :)
-
Can't help with Seattle but native Floridian who grew up there close to the beach. I'm sure Mr. Zogs (google it) is around in 2072.

Ah yes, already added that to the gear list ;) Thanks :)
As for the board itself, I am also not quite sure what type would be used on the beaches of Seattle either. Only experience I've ever had with surfing was my year in Cali, on a longboard, and I never really got that good at it. I am guessing a pro on those Seattle beaches would use a shortboard maybe?
-
Eh, it's the future; the boards are probably drones. ;D
Or at least something different after sixty years.

Maybe I should have made a rigger instead... ???
-
Drone Boards would allow you to stay on the sand with the beach blanket beauties!
-
Hmm...what Adept powers or spells would be good for a surfer? The only thing that comes to mind is Levitatate or Glide.
-
Athletics boosting and attribute boosting seems an easy and logical choice.

Yeah, I've got Agility Boost and the Gymnastics adder going on, most definitely.
Other powers I am not incredibly sure on just yet, still mulling. The GM says he is wanting to set up the game with low-level starter 'runners, so I am building the character with that in mind on 400 BP. The Magic Rating is starting at 4, so I am kinda limited by that. I wasn't going to get Killing Hands at all until he said something about spirits while coughing, so I am guessing that's probably gonna have to be a given as well, considering the not-so-subtle hint.
I think I noticed there's another thread for character concepts earlier, so I'll and look again move that question over there...

If said surfer were instead the envy of such beach blanket beauties, it would also allow her to stay on the sand and pull all the guys away from them, lol. Either way, win :D

Can't believe anyone has gone this long in a conversation about Shadowrun and surfing without a Point Break reference.

Lol, I have been trying hard to refrain, trust me...

As i said, something swims by, and more out of pure boredom simply eats you on the way . .
Australia is about the most magical place on earth i think.

I'd still love to know what's Uluru (aka Ayers' Rock) aka Imiri-te-Versakhan is supposed to be about.

huge aspected ritual site?

I live in washington play shadowrun and surf. There isn't any surf in puget sound. You'd have to go to the coast. Cape Flattery south to the tir border. Which means crossing Salish land.
-
hailing from Florida I can assure you the gulf side is not a very good area for surfing. waves are too small, unless of course there's a large storm going through.
also might I suggest trying to find a way to surf without a board. Literally being able to ride any wave sounds rather fun.

I live in the Northwest, and the surf sceen is all about windsurfing here. I don't know much about the Seattle area, but in Oregon (Tir in the 6th world) the Columbia river (or whatever the damn danelion eaters have renamed it) is some of the best windsurfing in the world, especially around the Hood River area. I assume there must be places to go in the Seattle area. If you google Seattle Windsurfing you get a ton of hits for shops, lessons, etc. While the water is probably somewhat nasty in the sound, I don't think its necessarily an acid bath. You are going to want a suit of some sort anyway, that water is cold and so is the wind most of the time, I am sure the 6th world windsurfers have adapted their gear to handle the environmental conditions.
-
You know, taming a Storm Dolphin in order to get some good waves in the Sound might be a way to get a business going... The hard part is getting one to like you. :P
-
not sure, but the old second edition adventure "Paradise Lost" might have some surfery info-
purely for the fluff perhaps...i seem to recall Hawaii being detailed in the rear of the book...dont feel like digging
through all my books at present.

Runner's Companion has one of the dwarf metavariant riding some crazy sci-fi surfboard in one of the images. I believe it is the hawaiian dwarf metavariant too.
and oddly enough there are surfshops in seattle today..... still no waves, have to drive 2 hours to the coast for surf. Perhaps if it was super windy you might get a 3 foot curler on alki that breaks almost on the shore, but the conditions would be so terrible you'd have to be a physical adept to catch them.
and even though you can windsurf in seattle, most people drive to the columbia river to do it???? beats me.....
I volunteer for surf clinics(teaching their kids) with the Makah and Quileute tribes, so perhaps 60 years later they have kept the tradition alive and there is still an active tourist and surf industry at La Push and Neah Bay.
