Title: Modifiers for Downtime tests
Post by: Cormroc on <02-27-16/2249:31>
Can there be modifiers to downtime tests? Specifically I am looking to add a module to a deck and trying to find the best way to get the hardware pool of 12 needed to do so. Logically the +1/+2 for reference materials available (Build/Repair Table SR5:146) make sense. I would expect a trivial Matrix Search to turn up some references/guides to adding a module.

Other things I would consider as a GM,

Teamwork tests: have someone help you out in the customization of your deck. This MAY be someone you have to hire..... (time for a contact or two?)

Tool modifiers: by having better tools then the minimum needed can be worth an extra few dice for the added investment spent in gear. (conditional)

Pay someone: You can't always do everything yourself, and the shadows are full of people who are willing to do a little "work on the side" for some extra cash, especially if it's something "harmless", like upgrading your deck. (its not like it's a bomb you know :P). Just don't expect complex work to be cheap. (contacts time again?)

In the case of Missions, it's mostly a matter of spending the week of downtime and any money involved with the module upgrade.

There is no opposed roll (like in Binding/Registering spirits or sprites)

There isn't an opposed test, but there is a test, Logic+Hardware(15,15min). My understanding was that for permanent tests like this you have to buy hits in missions, hence the required dice pool of 12. Binding is specifically used as an example of a test you don't have to buy hits if you don't want to (It isn't permanent as there is a limited number of services).

Data Trails does explicitly call out the conditions and memory portions of the table and restates the insufficient tools penalties, but no specific mention of the references portion.

For contacts paying someone 10 times the cost of the module to install/help install it seems pretty excessive.

I run missions sporadically with different groups so I don't really have anyone I can use to help with a teamwork test during downtime. If I haven't worked something out by the next run I'll have to see if I can find 2 hours during the run and someone with hardware to assist.

You could also pay 10-20% up cost and have someone do it for you.
