Hi,
I'm reading (in German) the Berlin sourcebook, and I did not find any entry relating to Horizon. Does Horizon has any kind of influence there ? Maybe they own some media corps in Germany ? If so, which books are mentionning this ?
-
Common Denominator (owned by Horizon) would certainly have offices in Berlin. I'm not sure where its main office is, but it's big enough that the major cities would be covered. Horizon also owns Westdeutscher Rundfunk, iirc. Primarily out of Köln, it may have a presence in Berlin.
-
Any book recommendation (even in German) for more info on Common Denominator and Westdeutscher Rundfunk ?
-
Sorry, don't speak German, and thus I have no idea of what's in those sourcebooks.
-
Corporate Guide gives a little detail about Horizon Europe and Common Denominator, although nothing that's Berlin specific. I honestly can't remember where the Rundfunk was from--Deutschland in den Schatten II? There was a 4th ed Berlin Quellenbuch as well.
-
Yep, I'm reading the Berlin (2072) book right now (but German is not completly up to the task). I'll take a stab at the Corporate Guide, and see if I can put my hand on "Deutschland in den Schatten II".

Indeed. A hive mind is a hive mind, even if it's not created by bugs.

Horizon is the mob given the power of a megacorp. Sure, they move in ways they think is best, but we've already seen that they can do terrible things when they think a little massacre is in order.

It's not even that direct. The Consensus is pure, inhuman evil. The idea that you can get everyone to "be on the same page" or get their ships sailing in the same direction or whatever pablum you want to shovel by forcing them to be nice, to compete "peacefully" and to otherwise just sacrifice all of their individuality and wants and fears to just be part of a giant shit organism.
To put it another way, if you've seen Network, Ned Beatty gives this epic, commanding speech at the climax of the second act. How he doesn't have an Oscar for that movie is fucking bonkers. But anyway, the corporatist world that he sells Howard Beale on is Horizon's business plan.

One of the thing I like in the Shadowrun Universe is how it is quite often... grey. Which, for a rpg settings, make it often quite "realistic" (sort of). I don't think Consensus is fully Evil - but, as the Aztec/Horizon war showed, it is, by no means, an bullet proof insurance that anything won't go wrong.
It also (for us GM) an interesting piece of tools. In this regards, it reminds me of the "meme" of Transhuman Space. Indeed, Consensus can easily led the PCs to do some very, very strange actions, from which they might not really fully understanding the meaning (at least, at first).
Anyhow, we are drifting a bit here, as my goal was to gather specific intels on what Horizon assets, challenges and targets are in Berlin - not Horizon generally.

At this point, you may just want to wait for Market Panic and whatever is in there about Horizon. (I have no idea what's in it.)
