Title: Dealing Damage to Gear
Post by: Chaemera on <11-16-10/2305:04>
Looking at a couple spells in Street Magic I come across the following:

Quote from:  Street Magic (2nd Printing), pg. 164, Corrode Object
Similar to Acid Stream and Toxic Wave (p. 197, SR4), these spells create a blast of corrosive spray that inflicts Acid damage (p. 154, SR4). The acidic effects of these spell, however, only affect the specified objects for which the spell was created - everything else remains unharmed. Each different ojbect requires a separate spell: Corrode Wall, Melt Electronics, Sludge Armor, and so on.

Quote from:  Street Magic (Second Printing), pg. 165, Ram Object
These variants of Shatter/Powerbolt/Powerball (p. 197, SR4) only work against a specific inanimate object. Each different Each different type of object requires a separate spell: Ram Door, Wreck Vehicle, Demolish Gun, and so on.

I get how these would work for barriers, but what about armor, weapons and electronics? I don't see anything in the RAW (dug through Arsenal, SR4A and Street Magic, specifically) that handles directly dealing out damage to non-barrier objects. Always possible I've just overlooked something.

Assuming I haven't, what have you guys done at your table (or seen done)? Just make a judgement call using the barriers table (SR4A, pg. 166)? And, however you address the question of Armor (for indirect) and structure, do you have a methodology for representing the degradation of a piece of gear that isn't taken out in one hit?

While I'm fine with being flexible at the table, I'm considering these spells from an NPC perspective and don't like to GM-fiat my players to death when I can ask the broader SR4 community first. Especially since I could swear the last time I looked at these spells I did find something in the RAW that answered at least some of these questions.

Currently, I have been considering Structure ratings for weapons based on size and material composition, Armor Structure = Ballistic + Impact ratings.

If its Spells
Objects have Object resistance and if the Spell overcomes it they're destroyed. If its shooting at Objects
I use the Barrier Table too.....but to be honest, I use it seldom

Yeah, I'd just use the Barrier Ratings table in SR4A (p. 166) to figure out an items Armor/Structure. Most electronics would probably be among cheap to heavy material, depending on the object. Weapons would be Heavy to Reinforced.
