Let's say my face is talking to Juan about a run. He has Juan as a loyalty 3 contact and his street cred is 6, in part because of things Juan hired him to do--so Juan is certainly aware of my guy's rep. Do I get +6 dice to my Negotiation roll as per the social modifier table?
EDIT: I ask because while by the rules, this is perfectly okay, in a living campaign, it seems like you could get a street cred of 10+ fairly quickly, which would trivialize your actual Charisma/Negotiation scores.
-
p. 372 of SR5:
"Street Cred is applied as a positive Limit Modifier to all Social Tests in situations where the character’s reputation would be known."
So you don't get +6 dice. instead you get +6 to your Social Limit.
-
I was thinking of the table on page 140, which specifies a +dice modifier equal to Street Cred. But I actually have a follow-up question regarding page 372. You generally get +whatever street cred at the end of a run. Do runners also get (Karma/10) of additional Street Cred in SRM? I assumed that the divide-by-ten rule was replaced by GMs assigning cred at the end of a mission, but I figured I should ask.
-
Kincaid, check page 372.
A character’s Street Cred score is based on the character’s total Karma earned. For every full 10 Karma that a character earns, they gain a point of Street Cred. Thus, Street Cred equals the character’s total Karma, divided by 10, always rounded down (though other factors may adjust it, such as sacrificing Street Cred to reduce Notoriety.

At the end of each mission, I've received a sheet from the GM noting karma earned, nuyen earned, contacts gained (or improved), as well as changes to Street Cred, Notoriety, and Public Awareness. The Street Cred I've accrued this way isn't linked to my total karma. For example, "Chasin' the Wind" specifies +1 Street Cred for completing a specific task.
-
Interesting. That might be worth mentioning to the ... oh, I don't know... Missions Developer? *coughs*
-
It's both, or I should say that is the way I am interpreting it.
You have the Karma/10 per the RAW on pg 372. The Missions have additional recommendations in the "Picking Up the Pieces" segment of the module including Reputation awards/hits. Some are scenario specific and should be awarded if the specific criteria are met and others are discretionary: "During the adventure, runners may perform actions that will add to their Street Cred, Notoriety, or Public Awareness (p. 372, SR5). Besides the scenario specific gains listed below, gamemasters should consider the characters actions throughout the game and award additional points as appropriate." (from Chasin' the Wind...emphasis mine). I recommend to my players keep the two types of Street Cred separate so it's easy for a GM to see what they have been awarded vs based on a Karma calculation.

I track total karma, so I'm essentially doing this, but now we're obviously in the realm of house rules, which is always a little tricky for open play. Would I add both Street Cred to my social rolls? Only one while the other counts towards my limit? Lots of stuff would need to be ironed out.

"Street Cred equals the character’s total Karma, divided by 10, always rounded down [...] At the gamemaster’s discretion, additional Street Cred points can be awarded [...] Street Cred is applied as a positive Limit Modifier to all Social Tests in situations where the character’s reputation would be known."
No difference between the two origins for effect. As to whether Street Cred is meant to add bonus dice, we need errata to be sure but I honestly doubt this is the case, since they not only switched away from dicepool modifiers quite a bit and only the table still contains the likely-archaic dicepool modifier, but they also stopped mentioning a restriction on how big the bonus can be, which seems far more fitting for an intended pure limit-increase.

Yeah, I'm assuming all Street Cred is Street Cred RAW, but SRM is weird in the sense that it gives you Street Cred outside of the rule you quoted--it seems to be +1 per mission and maybe +2 if you capstone a convention run.
-
Not at all, it falls directly within the rule: Additional Street cred points awarded for noteworthy accomplishments.
As for how often it happens: With the two books, you can get up to a total of 4 Street Cred spread out over 3 of the 8 missions. With the Emerging from the Wasteland plotline, you can usually score 1 per run if you make the correct choice / obtain the correct result for that accomplishment.

Good point--and man, my guy has built is cred up fast! Of course, adding 9 to this social limit (bringing it to 17) isn't exactly a useful benefit if no +dice are involved.
-
Just imagine a 200-karma character with 24+8 Missions at the end of Season 5, and that's excluding any CMPs aside from Sprawl Wilds + Firing Line, who scored optimal on Street Cred. If the trend continues, we're talking 30+20=50+ Street Cred. ^_^ Wonder if it will have any significance to retiring.
(Side note: Man, my own PC is poor. ;_; I tend to lose out on an average of >2k per mission compared to players when I GM.)
-
Don't forget that you get Public Awareness from Street Cred, so you'll rapidly reach a point where anyone you meet, everywhere you go will know who you are.

Where is this rule?
-
That's an SR4 rule. It no longer exists in SR5.

Phew--Public Awareness is the bane of my character's existence, I got nervous there.
-
In SR4 I (house)ruled that people with good-vs-Notoriety-qualities could sacrifice Street Cred to burn their Notoriety into the negative, this would allow players in the long run to have positive Street Cred but 0 Public Awareness. Nothing in the rules forbade Notoriety going negative, all I did was put a limit on it.
-
Sorry to see that it's gone. Admittedly, the massive Public Awareness that resulted from the hugely inflated Street Cred numbers Missions generates was a largely ignored game mechanic so I can see why it was done away with.
-
Public Awareness now being a separate thing also means you can work up a smooth or nasty reputation without it automatically having a consequence for police attention. So I like it myself.
-
In addition, the street cred table gives you an idea of how well known you are (on a scale ranging from bob the unknown to Fast Jack)
I have a player, who played in 4 of the GenCon games, and we've run 3/4 of Sprawls Wild. With his Man of the People downtimes, he's rocking 70 Karma and has gotten 6 Street Cred from Mission rewards. He has a total Street Cred of 13.
For the record, that table means that he's a household name (and then some) as the scale goes from 1-10.
So, this Mage is apparently as well-known as Harlequin or Fast Jack, or POTUCAS.
I have a Technomancer who's rockin' a 9 at this point.... He's only played the forst 3 Sprawl Wilds games. he'll be a 10 after the next game.
Something is askew if you ask me.
-
I'd ignore those scales for Missions. They're... Umm... Yeah. They're a bad legacy from SR4, and only apply if you're one of those wierd gamers who never has a campaign last more than a half dozen game sessions.

Are you talking about the 1-10 table on page 373? That's Public Awareness, not Street Cred. God willing, your Public Awareness isn't already 13 ;)
-
And in SR5, you no longer get auto-PA from SC+N. So even if you end up at 40+ SC, it doesn't mean you have 13 PA.
-
Disregard my post about the table, you're right, that's for PA, not SC.
DOH!
-
So what do the levels mean? How are regarded at 5? 7? 15? 20?
-
Speaking of Street Cred: What is the impact of Notoriety and Public Awareness in Missions? It has zero effect unless the GM makes it impact things.
-
I'm still actually curious as to what street cred does for you in Missions (bigger limit, extra dice, both, etc.)

Beyond the listed benefits in the rulebook of extra Social dice and an elevated Social limit, I don't think there's anything of note that Street Cred does.
-
Right, but since it says different things in different places, I wasn't sure if both benefits were intended or if it was a copy/paste error.
-
Extra Social Dice aren't even clear whether they're meant to happen. Which kinda makes it hard to figure out if Street Cred is supposed to boost your Negotiation Test dicepools in Missions. I hope not, because it'd make Negotiation Tests bloat way too easily: 6 Charisma, 6 Negotiation, 6 Street Cred, 6+ Teamwork Hits (easy if the teammates also have +SC dice) means 3 hits more than the Johnson on average even before Edge, and Runners love using Edge on Negotiation Tests.
-
This is a situation for the official SR5 FAQ to handle, not Missions, since it's pretty low impact overall. (And yes, I consider Negotiation tests low impact. :) )
-
So no official "Johnsons hate you because you're a smartass idiot" rules for Missions, check. :) Shame, was wondering what'd happen if you hit PA 3 and encounter Lone Star. Maybe some of the missions will employ Notoriety and PA, a man can dream. ^_^
-
We may cover that in the future. And there may be specific situations pop up where a Public Awareness or Notoriety check may come into play, but that's stuff taht would likely be written into the adventure.
I can just see it now... You show up to rescue the hostage, and she recognizes Gorefang the Merciless, ork Street Sammy with a Notority of 10, so she goes crazy and attacks thinking he's there to rape and kill her.:)

:o
Erm, sounds like Gorefang needs to find a different 'hobby.'
-
Does't matter what Gorefang's current hobby is. he has a really bad rep. People automatically think the absolute worst by default, it's human nature.
And Notoriety is not supposed o be happy and shiney. It's a penalty for acting like a jackass psychopath.

My 4th ed Missions mage ended up with a PA score of like 14, or it would be if the scale allowed ratings that high.
It made for some moments of hilarity, because he apparantly had a TV show and toy line based off him, without his consent.
"Oh my god, you're that guy from the Equalizer 2073 show!"
