Hi,
I made a human Drake Adept and now I came to an interesting question.
Drakes cannot speak but normal Dragons have the ability Dragonspeech.
Can Drakes learn Dragonspeech and how if it is possible?
-
Ok, I think I found my answer ;)
Dragons or other drakes that possess the Dragonspeech power (p. 296, SR4) may teach drake initiates the ability as a metamagic technique.

I.E., if the drake gains a level in Initiation, they may take Dragonspeech as that Initiation's power.

Well, I think / hope so ;)

Not quite, if a drake initiates and is being taught by a dragon (or drake who knows it already) then they can learn it. Its not as simple as I initiated now I know it.

Well, yes, that's the RP part of the metamagic initiation. But, as far as the rules go, it's a simple Initiation power.

Nope, it clearly says you have to be taught it by someone who has it already. Normally you could go with a mentor spirit teaching but it does say a dragon or a drake who knows it has to be the one who teaches.

I'm agreeing with you. What I'm saying is that is a strictly Role-Playing requirement. If the PC wants it, the player and GM have to get together to figure out how to bring it into the story. Much like how, in 3.5 D&D, you were required to be "initiated" into a group of Drunken Master monks.

I'm sorry I must have taken it the wrong way, I agree though it is a roleplay issue more then anything just locked down by the rules. Normally a metamagic has a few ways of being learnt that don't always involve another person
Mentor Spirit teaching
Spirit teaching
Another mage teaching
Research
Metamagic formula (not 100% sure on that one but I am pretty sure it exists in there)
Making it only available from a dragon or drake who already knows it makes it much much harder to get unless your party is used to dealing with high level dragons or drakes (granted if you have one in the party it is probably easier)
In my last group we had a drake in it who was all happy and bouncy about trying to learn it until we all said no as the only other drake he knew was his enemy and we weren't planning on getting too close to a dragon if we could help it.
edit for spelling

What's one of the unwritten laws of the shadows? Never cut a deal with a dragon?
How I would run it is like being given a pass to listen into their highest level dealings. Dragon to dragon type of discussions. Only way that'll happen is if the dragon in question has a whole hell of alot of faith in you and can enforce your loyalty in some fashion... or there's some expectation for you to be taking said dragon's place.
And you know how dragons love their secrets.
Just something to keep in mind.
-
Don't forget that most Dragons view the drakes as their bonded servants... and would love to have something that would bond them closer to them. ;)

Now there's a character concept, a common drake that was a member of Big D's brood. And probably of interest to GhostWalker...
-
Its not that cool if your in a group with it.
Player in my last group was all up for being a drake (big thing for dragons in the real world) and writes his backstory as being one of Big D's special ops guys loads of stuff that made me cringe and a weapon focus designed to be used in both human and drake form. The fact he was a eastern drake and thought he was connected to a western dragon didnt seem to cause a problem in his mind.
Long story short whilst I'm all for big plots having someone whos main contact is the DF and always wants to do stuff with dragons can get in the way of other fun stories.
So to cheer myself up I turned him into a pig
