Title: [OOC] In the Land of the Falling Sun
Post by: HydroRaven on <07-16-13/0812:44>
This is the out of character [OOC] thread for the campaign "In the Land of the Falling Sun". Any rule interpretation, real-life issues or any other questions not relating to the story should be posted here. I ask that first few posts be reserved for approved character sheets in the format provided on this forum (the one by FastJack) from the following people:

Raiden
Muscular_Bevar
Lumen
Necrogigas
Crossbow
Chrona

For everyone else that has submitted a character for consideration, I thank you for your time. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to retain everyone, but would gladly place you on a waiting list should anyone drop for any reason. We will be using Invisible Castle for rolls, under the campaign name "In the Land of the Falling Sun".

Hey Raiden  ;D

Just want to say I've seen some good stuff from Necro and Crossbow and I'm looking forward to playing with you guys.  I just have a few finishing touches to tidy up and I'll be ready to submit for approval.  I feel like I'm losing it because I can't find the post but you said you don't use chummer correct HydroRaven?  What's your preferred format for a character sheet?

Also as a heads up my rl gaming group meets Saturday so I won't be able to post that day after 5pm EST.

[spoiler=Pipebomb Character Sheet]
Name: Michael Fischer
Alias: Pipebomb
Race: Elf
Sex: Male
Nationality: California Free State
Lifestyle: Motel - 800¥ per month (Comforts – Squatter, Entertainment – Squater, Necessities – Low, Neighborhood – Low, Security – Low, Pest Magnet R1, Poor Condition) (1 month)
Karma Spent: 0
Physical Description: Pipebomb, standing at 1.91 m and weighting at 68.04 kg, is tall and lankey, typical features of his metatype. He also has his metatype’s stereotypical photogenic looks. He's caucasian, of German descent, with blue eyes and brown hair. He almost always wears sunglasses, beanies, scarves, and other similar articles to obscure and hide his features. He also constantly wears a pair of earbuds that act as hearing aids to conteract the damage a lifetime of setting off bombs has done to his hearing.
Personality/background Pipebomb is a gravely serious person at all times, it's a cold day in hell when his face even hints at a smile. He’s all business, all the time; it wouldn’t be unfair to say that joy and fun are alien concepts to him.

Background: Born in 2048, to Californian insurgents operating in San Francisco, Michael Fischer has always known two things; guerilla warfare and hatred for the Japanese. He spent his entire life helping his parents carry out their operations to force the JIS, and Saito after the '61 withdrawal order, out of the Bay Area. Both his parents were killed in '67, in a nitroglycrin detonation, a little over a year before CFS forces deposed Saito and retook the territory Japan had stolen over thirty years earlier. For the first time in his life, Michael found himself lost. His only goal in life had been accomplished, and now he had no clue what to do next. Being a lifelong insurgent, it wasn't long before the Shadows found him, and he was a natural fit for the lifestyle. The work was only work though, it did not fill him with the sense of purpose that he desperately longed to rekindle. It eventually came to him though, the Japanese scourge had been driven out of the Bay Area, but not from the face of the Earth. When that little light bulb came on, he knew what he had to do and began making plans. A few months later he was in Neo-Tokyo, stepping off a smuggler's ship, planning some payback.

Morton Davis (Smuggler): Davis is a U.C.A.S. born ork smuggler that operates all over the Pacific Rim. Once Fischer made his plans to relocate to the JIS, he needed to find a way to get there. Fischer’s fixer set him up with Davis. Fischer spent the trip mostly staying out of Davis and his drones’ way, but when pirates attacked the vessel, Fischer assisted Davis in repelling them. Davis said he owed him one.

Jeremy “Sandman” Michaels (Fixer): Michaels is a C.A.S. born dwarf fixer operating in the Minato ward of Neo-Tokyo. He specializes in finding his fellow gaijin runners work in the xenophobic JIS. Once Davis dropped off Fischer, he directed him to a bar in the Minato Ward that was known to be frequented by the gaijin Shadow community. At the bar, Michaels scoped out him out almost immediately. A few drinks and a trial run later, they had a business relationship.

description/background.
[spoiler]Akio is a changeling 1st class ork. 6 feet tall, black hair, eyes of a wolf and pronounced canines. He looks fairly human from a distance, not counting the eyes. but up close it is easy to spot pointed ears, small tusks protruding slightly from his bottom lip,  and an orangeish skin pigmentation. Muscled and well built and athletic looking.

background summary. if you wanna know more ask :3
Akio doesn't remember his life before age 10. All he remembers is waking up in a bed one day at a dojo in a village high in the Japanese mountains. His life has always been that of the clan, the Dojo, and his Sensei. Trained for as long as he can remember in Ninjutsu. He was taught the reason they trained as warriors, protection. Honor, strength, Family the meaning of Ninpo. Many people managed to find there way to the dojo for training, few stayed more than a year or two. After 12 years of training He had honed his skills to great strength and during this time he had come to regard his Sensei not only as his teacher, but as a father likewise his master had grown very found of Akio. After the 11th year his teacher decided he was ready to protect and aid the clan. He sent him on  several shadowrun missions, mainly working for Renraku, since they were holding the  destruction of the clan over his head at that time should they not comply. After a while Akio gained other reasons to work in the shadows and so has stayed until a time he believes he is truly ready to return for good and accept the title of master his Sensei has bestowed him. [spoiler]Name: Conrad Johnson
Alias: J
Race: Human
Sex: Male
Nationality: UCAS (Of Japanese ancestry but he doesn't know)
Lifestyle: Street
Karma Spent: 0/0
Physical Description: A tall, slender man, with rather attractive features behind a thick beard, he doesn't shave unless he has to. Brown hair, blue eyes and usually a severe expression of thoughtfulness that's often mistaken as scheming. His foci are two rings on his left hand, left to him by his dad.
Personality/background He had a good gig going. Was part of magical security for the main SK-P building in Tokyo, using their fiber wire system to cast spell far from harms way. He dealt with runners sometimes too, so he's heard the old "bottom line wasn't hit bad so let 'em live" line before. His magic wasn't the flashiest but it got the job done, he was about to get his firearms training too. That all fell apart when his own Father was caught on camera in a maximum security lab, then vanished. All forensic evidence pointed at his father, even Conrad was forced to admit the astral signature was his father. "But how!?" He'd pleaded, "He's a fisherman, he's not even awakened!? How'd he get in!?"
Something important was stolen, something that hit the bottom line too hard and Conrad was laid off. With all his corporate bridges burned from suspicion he was lost.
Luckily he bought the right man a drink recently and the conversation quickly turned to making money. Good thing too, he just got evicted and living out of a bag is rough and he isn't used to being this close to danger.

Jodie Mason is the owner/operator of "Jodie's Place" in Roppongi, a kitchy touristy place that is based on the New York corner bar, it’s also Daniel's second home.  She is also the only woman to ever turn him down, preferring him as a friend.  (Yes, she is straight)  He is her protector and avenger, having dealt with a few 'issues' in the 'hood for her, she is his enabler and his entry into the Shadows, having introduced him to Max, an ex-boyfriend.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Daniel Smiling Wolf is a full blooded Lakota Sioux.  He grew up living a charmed life of a small town sports hero in Montana.

Everything came pretty easy for him, his natural charisma and athletic ability combined with the magic that enhanced both, he was a happy and popular young man.

This came to a screeching halt for him when his parents were killed shortly after he came of age.  He was automatically granted a delayed waiver of his country’s military service obligation, but he turned it down and showed up for training as scheduled.  He seemed okay, but it was clear early on he was changed.

‘Smiley’s’ abilities caused him to gravitate towards the Wildcats, and he would have made it had it not been for an ill-advised and poorly executed dalliance with an older woman who happened to be married to his training company’s XO.  While this didn’t kill his military career, it was the first sign of what became a pattern in his life.  For the next several years, Daniel would prove himself capable and even heroic in all manner of high profile and dangerous assignments, then he would have some ill-advised situation, usually involving some combination of women, alcohol or fighting, that would derail him and then his charisma or friendships would pull him back from the brink.

His luck ran out when, while working security at STC HQ in Billings, he killed a man in self-defense, a man who happened to be married to a woman Daniel was seeing and who happened to an aide to the Salish Council representative.

He came to Tokyo to hide and make a life for himself, but has not bothered to try and break his pattern of subtle self-destruction, if he is even aware of it.  He has found a niche as a face and hand to hand fighter, but has also become known on the party scene and usually blows through any money he makes as a runner.

Daniel is a friendly and happy person, and a capable member of a team.  He is also an alcoholic and living on the edge is the only way he has of dealing with his demons.

Nailing down an appearance for Mia is next to impossible. She is a whirlwind of changing fashions and styles, tho never truly subdued or quite and always pushing the edge of fashion. Even her hair is rarely the same colour from week to week and she has been known to change to multiple times in the same day… She has nano tattoos covering her arms and legs and across her chest and back which she changes often as well as often changing her hairstyle drastically, using extensions, or cutting sections away, as well dyeing it different colours. She has a few piercings in her ears, nose, lip and cheek and will wear over the top makeup most of the time. She also tends to accessorise a lot although some small pieces turn up more than others (mostly fetishes and foci for those who can tell)
She walks with confidence and many people can feel her presence as she enters a room, and if not they will hear her as soon as she starts talking. The old phrase of being turned up to 11 couldn’t apply more to Mia.
Personality/background Little Trish was born in 2045 to parents Sergio Moretti and Sakura Tanaka on the outskirts of Hiroshima. Her parents had meet a few years before at a business conference in Tokyo, were Sergio was the guest speaker and Sakura a promising young scientist in the field genetics, specifically those having to do with how the body reacts to invasive cyber and bio modifications. Sakura was working for Renraku in Hiroshima at the time and found Sergio to be fascinating both intellectually and, well, physically. After a night of karaoke that neither of them have ever forgotten, Sakura knew one thing, she needed to Renraku to make an “acquisition of talent”. Aster saying good by and seeing Sergio heading back to Italy, Sakura worked her magic managed to make the people that matter in her department see how badly they needed Sergio on their current project. Within the year Sergio was also mysteriously working for Renraku in Hiroshima and well, the rest is history.

Trish made her way thru Renraku funded schooling, living the corp kid life and knowing that one day she would be required to find a job in the corporate restructuring. She found joy in the times when she could play music with her friends (on her fathers beat up old acoustic) and just be a kid, and her parents sheltered her from the worst of what corp life can throw at you. She was ear marked at an early age to be checked for various genetic identifiers as is usual but her parents, being genetisits had already tested her privately and had noticed a number of odd indicators turn up. Rather than risk their daughter become an experiment or worse, they faked the test results and knew that the background count of Hiroshima should help mask some of her strangeness. Trish was deemed a high potential for becoming another great researcher like her parents tho her loving parents kept encouraging her in her music. Unfortunately this all came back to bite them hard, when, in 2061, with the passing of the comet, Trish’s latent talent blossomed and the corp realised they had been duped. Trish should have been under going training to be a wage mage for many years now and because of her parents that talent was years behind. This wasn’t the first time that Sakura rebellious spirit had come to light and so with both Sergio and Sakura being in their declining years and soon to be more of a drain then an assest to the corp, Renraku decided to make an example of them. Trish was forced into the mages academy in Kyoto and her parents were exiled. Trish was filled with hate for the Corp that had ruined her life and taken her family from her and she swore revenge. After repeated tousles with sec forces and her peers, Renraku was beginning to think it wasn’t worth there time to train this one, even tho her talents seemed great. But Trish never knew how close she came to being “removed” and had almost resigned herself to her fate as a wagemage. It wasn’t till the crash of 64 that she saw her opportunity. In the chaos of the crash she managed to leave the academy and made her way to Neo Tokyo, where, with her trusty guitar and what little she managed to get out with (mostly magical supplies, knowing that if nothing else they could be worth a fortune if she could sell them and that her talent would be more marketable if she had her own gear) she settled in, playing dive bars for beer money and doing odd jobs for rent. It didn’t take her long to make a name for herself as Mia Meow and she has settled right into the darker recesses of Tokyo leaving much of her past happily lost behind her.

Of her parents, Mia looks the most like her mother and tends to express her japanesse heritage more so than the Italian, tho her complexion does tend more towards the olive skin of her father. She is on the tall side of average and the rounded side of thin (athletic but with curves). She inherited her Fathers love of Music (especially rock and roll and flamenco, although her personal tastes have often drifted from mainstream to the heavier stuff) and her mothers fiery passion (the thing that drew Sergio to his home and settle in a completely foreign culture)

Hiro "MacTavish"4/4
MacTavish is the barman and owner of "MacTavish's Irish Pub" or the Tav for short as well as a few seemier dives in the area. However, Hiro MacTavish, no matter much he wants to be, is not even slgihtly irish. In fact the moniker he has taken is scottish and the accent he uses is a horrid bastardization of both with street japanese. His shock of (clearly dyed) red hair and and his variety of garish kilts (he really has no idea about europe) usually mean something exciting is happening in whichever venue you happen to have seen him at tonight

Despite all this he is  good man to know to buy and sell drugs with the Yaks, have a number of cops on the payroll not to mention the respect of the members of the Burning Stars, the local small time Wiz Gang that offers its protection to his dumps, On top of that he has contacts in the music biz, and all of the local fences and talismongers run there buisness thru him.

Mia's connection with him happened when he saved her from her current "manager" (sleaze bag that was trying to milk what he could out of Mia) and took her under his wing. In the last few years MacTavish has made sure Mia had work, both shadow and musical, and has invested alot into making her an asset. Mia has always suspected there was something more to thier relationship (in the begining she was afraid it was another of sexual exploitation but she knows better now) and whilst she has come to understand that there is far more to MacTavish than meets the eye she has only penertated a few of his many layers

The Burning Stars2(4)/3
The Burning Stars are a small Wiz gang, mostly made up of musicians and wanabees with minor mojo. Whilst unimpressive compared to some of the real gangs in the area, they act as the magical arm of Mactavish's private security force that help him run his little neightbourhood empire.

Th gang is headed up by Sleazy Pete, an old skool punker trying to keep the brit invasion alive (and failing...) and one of the few with any real mojo (or any left, as many of the members once had sime only to find it burned out due to years of hard living). The group is a bizare collection of misfit musicians that all seemed to be headed to the gutter one way or another (terrible managers, band breakups, durned out drug addicts etc. ) who have all been saved by the man MacTavish.

Whilst Mia has an odd relationship with the group (MacTavish would have pushed her into this line of work if he hadn't seen the true potential she has, and may yet be training her to take over when Sleazy is no longer fit) given that she is patched but not a member. She has been called upon by the group when they are pulling something big but is not involved with them in the day to day. That being said she is good friends with the eclectic bunch and seems to find at least one of them sleeping on her couch (or on occasion, in her bed!) whenever she is home.

new to the whole pbp thing but, from what i had gathered, combat ends up slow and so is reserved for appropriate occasions, and role playing "Me hit with stick yet" wasnt going to be all that fun?? or am i way off the mark?

also, because i know first impression are super important and trying to get the right feel across when all i have is text and the ability to amnipulate my char, I know i came out of the gates with a bit of a bang but what one would hopefully be experiencing in RL would be a forceful but dazzling personality, thinking kinda jack black, russel brand, jonny depp, many lead singers and comedians. It catches you by surprise, and then you get excited to follow along.

I'm not expecting that you will all follow me like lost sheep (in fact that would be way to wierd) but i sense that with words alone i may struggle to present this true force of character and you will assume mia is something she is not (like slightly handicapped in the brain region!!)

Hope thats helpful...

You pulled it off okay, don't sweat it.  I am not so experienced with pbp, but you will definitely get where you want to go with good posting IC, I recommend generous use of descriptions though.

If you think you are being interpreted wrong, just clarify in OOC thread or by PM. it is kinda like throwing up the "T" sign at tabletop so you can speak plainly out of character.

Probably should have, we can double-team folks in the future, I didn't realize that there was another Face on the team.  I will be sure to wait on you for a coordinating boost the next time before I roll.

As for previous arrangements, it certainly makes sense.  Wolf and a cat though, somebody probably came away with marks.  ;)

Managed to grab 5 min online, so once astral is done, my suggestion to the team will be that i go and use my feminine wiles to convince the security/front desk, that we are hear to visit and see if i cant milk some info out of him/her.

Will post it IC if i can get back else happy for hydro to take control on that front. Any info would be good but specifically push for things like, schedule, habits, appearance, any thing unique about him. Provide the name that kuren got for us if pushed. Also, if necessary, roll con(obviously to lie) or neg(if i think he/she wants something) or leadership(if i think i can convince him/her onto out side) or even try to use commanding voice subtly ("pass me his key", "let us past", in the case he/she shows some resistance to reveal a secret "you can tell me")

hope that helps, sorry for the inconvenience.

First, I guess a roll to find the hidden security node would be appropriate. After that, your standard hacking (on-the-fly in this case, unless you want to make your teammates wait after you) to get in and see what they have.

I did one scan for a hidden node in my block of hacking rolls (quoted below) and according to the book the test threshold is 4.  Unless you say it's general search in which case I can bust out some extended test rolls.

Quote
After that I'll search for a node within the apartment and scan for any hidden nodes.Elec. Warfare 3 + Scan 5 = 8d6 8d6.hits(5)=4

Also just realized I'm a huge noob and forgot to pick up a stealth program -_- this will not end well...

That sounds like an oversight that should be allowed to be remedied if the nuyen can be shuffled around, what do you say Hydro?

Ok, that was my oversight. You do find the hidden security node, so you can roll to get in.

So, like I said, my Matrix knowledge is not that great. From what I understand, with your Matrix perception roll, you have 3 things you can look at (I'm looking at p. 228 in the Core Book). You looked at other slaved devices (cameras, locks, etc.), which would leave you with 2 other things to look at in this node.

I'm doing all this in AR so it shouldn't disrupt my investigation inside.

Room 409? I though the person was in room 202, or is that the warded room?
Title: Re: [OOC] In the Land of the Falling Sun
Post by: HydroRaven on <07-28-13/2234:22>
202 is the warded room, the room across would be 409 where someone is. It's about 23:00, so most rooms have people inside of them.

And just to make my post clear, the alert is still on in the node, Lumen. By experience, you know that if anyone calls law-enforcement, a handful of patrol cars (about 4-5) will show up.

Can I make a Matrix Perception on the other node that was alerted?
Computer 3 + Analyze 5 = 8d6
8d6.hits(5)=3 (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4152173/)

First I just want to identify the node.  Who does it belong to?
Second checking on it's alert status.
Third whether a Trace is running.  If so I'll roll a Redirect Trace to try and hide my tracks better.

At least point I just want to lay low and make sure the authorities aren't on their way.
Title: Re: [OOC] In the Land of the Falling Sun
Post by: HydroRaven on <07-29-13/0749:14>
The node belongs to a commlink. It's not in alert mode for the moment. And third, there are no traces currently running.

In that case I'm going to attempt to Intercept Traffic so I can monitor any further communications between the comm and the building's node and possibly edit it if need be.

Hacking 3 + Sniffer 5 = 8d6.
8d6.hits(5)=3 (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4152184/)

I have an auto picker and a maglock sequencer, I forogt to give myself a rank in lock picking...

Title: Re: [OOC] In the Land of the Falling Sun
Post by: HydroRaven on <07-29-13/1916:33>
If you don't have a rank in locksmith, you can use the autopicker + agility for the mechanical lock test. For the maglock, it's a hardware + logic skill, if you have the appropriate tools. If not, Kuren will have to hack it.

Title: Re: [OOC] In the Land of the Falling Sun

Forensic samples to test in the lab.  Hair, fingerprints, bodily fluid, etc.  The rules for chemistry in the book are all about cooking but to me a Chemistry test seemed appropriate for the meticulous gathering and preservation of samples.

Let me clarify the setup: there are 2 doors on the right and one on the left. Both doors on the right are closed and the door on the left is open. In front of the first door on the right (closest to the entrance) is a painting, and in front of the second door on the right is the door on the left. You inspected the entrance and pulled a print from the front door. Which room does Kuren go in first, Lumen?

With Linguist and a high Intuition I would beg to differ but I suppose it's Hydro's call.  Total dice pool is a 9 actually.  I guess that makes him as good at English as he is at hacking so nm... lol.

Also HydroRaven what would be a reasonable time for the forensics tests to take?  I couldn't find any concrete rules on the matter.  Definitely don't want to lie to Pipebomb at this point.

For the forensics tests, probably a few hours. The DNA, the hair samples and the prints will all have to be checked with a database, so a few hours sounds like the ticket.

And Crossbow, you need to come to Tokyo. You'll see that you really don't need a car here, and actually using the trains/subways is a lot more convenient than driving.
Title: Re: [OOC] In the Land of the Falling Sun

I had heard from friends who have visited Japan (and Korea the same applies) that subways/trains or walking if it's close is the best way to get around.

chrona im the same 8 (12) so either way. also i think we are both shinto so we summon the same spirits (i can do beast too)

I suggest you roll any way as i offered to help you (atm Mia assumes you are the more powerful mojo slinger even thos she's not too shabby, may change based on your roll... especially as she suspects you of being a possible burnout...)

and the roll is  12d6.hits(5)=5 (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4157587/)

I got zero hits, but you still have to roll defense, chance for glitches and all. Ties go to defender, so I doubt you'll have to edit your post.
Good point I'll roll a block which is him instinctively bringing up the sheathed katana  that hed have been carrying.

Blades and Reaction (5d6.hits(5)=1) (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4157592/) almooosttt a glitch

Actually if it is a tie, I go first with the highest Edge and he never swings from being in a full nelson when he cocks back.

Oh, I deleted that post, on second thought I think I still have to get at least one hit for the attack to mean anything. I dunno, I'm kinda drunk at the moment. Can anyone verify? At the very least, it doesn't really matter in this case.

Drunk player at the wheel of a mass-murdering explosions expert that I just hit in the head.

Ah, Shadowrun.

Wait, blades and reaction? Are you trying to chop of my hand to stop me from hitting you?

No like I said, it would have been a block with the sheathed sword, not a parry action. and in a noodle diner, near the front door, i doubt i have the jumping room for gymnastics.

Actually you resisted the spell, its damage was 2+2 Hits, like a DV2 weapon that i rolled 2 hits on.
Title: Re: [OOC] In the Land of the Falling Sun
Post by: Raiden on <08-02-13/0119:15>
no, you would only add 1 hit, you can use net hits to increase damage he has to resist then takes the damage I thought.

No, Chrona's right. Spell damage for Stunbolt is (Force/2) + 1 + net hits (limited by Force)
So its (2/2) +1 +2 = 4.

Its just F+Net Hit afaik (Which is still 4S in this case, but a roll of 2 or higher on willpower negates the whole thing)

im with chrona (and the book...  :P )

[spoiler]From SR4A pg. 204
Damage Value: The base Damage Value for Combat spells is
based on Force, which is chosen by the magician at the time of casting.
Any net hits scored on the Spellcasting Test increase the DV by 1 per
net hit. Each spell description notes whether damage is Stun (S) or
Physical (P).[/spoiler]

Again really drunk right now, kinda confused.

Okay so the force of the spell was 2. You got 3 hits, limited to 2 by the force of the spell, and I got 2 hits. So net hits of 0, so the spell does no damage, right?

Seriously, this PBP just got a helluva lot more fun. Pipebomb, while more methodical and tactical than most of my characters, wasn't meant to be this mentally taxing. But that's a-okay, this new route is way more interesting.

Sure thing. Hydro you want me to roll again or should i just use the summon check from earlier which never really resolved (cause the group impolded!!)

Heres a Spirit resist and drain roll just in case (for a force 4 spirit of man) with the old unused roll at the top   :D

[spoiler]Former summon roll repost  12d6.hits(5)=5 (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4157587/)
Spirit resist  4d6.hits(5)=1 (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4159105/)
Drain resist  12d6.hits(5)=2 (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4159106/)
That would give 4 services and i resisted drain (just...)
Also as a force 4 man spirit i will give it an offensive spell, lets say Cacophonous Cloud
[/spoiler]

If I find it =P

Whether he believes he disrespected you and embarrassed you or not, his culture dictates he should not speak to you till he has struck it big. So he wont talk to you till he proves himself by finding the body.

By the way, this is how it works with Japanese Johnsons too. If you fail a run or what they wanted is broken, not what they thought or doesn't help them, you are held accountable, it is your fault and you owe THEM till you repay your debt for being a failure.

I said in the quote box if it turned out to be too far i would stop. in such a case I will project there in advance and then tell you. I did task the spirit with finding it and leading me to it BEFORE sunrise though. Asking if I could bring my body was a test that it was possible, the spirit cannot agree with me bringing my body if the task cannot be completed if i do.

Area knowledge gives you the same thing the others got, but you find out that the Japana-corps are battling for influence in this neighbourhood, with nobody really coming out the winner yet.

The search on the address tells you it seems a legitimate funeral home, with what seem like real "bookings" made in the past albeit not as frequent as you'd imagine. You ultimately learn it is owned by Renraku through a flowchart of subsidiaries.

The deceased and the situations surrounding it, you can try for info from any spirit of man, or in this case one using that hair to summon it but we have more chance of getting more complete info from the whole body, using which I may be able to summon a spirit of man that is literally the spirit of THE huMAN we want to know about. (this does not mean it is the actual person, but a spirit made from that persons thoughts, dreams and life somewhere out in the infinite number of metaplanes.

Basically you've summoned a spirit of man who has Ms. Kobayashi as a hobby, i'm hoping to summon a spirit who either thinks they are Ms. Kobayashi or is THE expert on her.

So ask you spirit what they know about her fate and how and why she died.

(Any of what i just said is of course completely up to Hydro, this is just how its gone every other time im a summoner)

Its all fluff from here, you could potentially do it your way too, but J isn't actually religious, so he doesn't think there is a soul to get. Im very used to playing hermetics, and what i typed was a very hermetic view of how it works

With the body your threshold for summoning a spirit that is closely affiliated to the deceased will go down dramatically. Of course, you know that the spirit summoned won't give you all the answers though ;)

@Lumen

The back door has a maglock and so does the front. You find a camera inside the building, giving on the entrance.

hey hydro, just wondering what this area is like. are there fire escapes, is there loads of junk down the alleyways, what kind of things could one potentially hide behind, are there any building you could go into and sit like a cafe or club?

@Muscular

Nothing as far as bars/clubs, but you see a Stuffer Shack about 300 meters down. Besides that, not much rubbish in the alleys.

Oh, ok, I get it now. Basically, no garages/hearses. Most shinto funerals are done inside the house of the deceased or buddhist-style funerals in a funeral home and incinerations are carried. There usually is no body to burry, as most of the time only ashes remain. The stretchers are used to bring the bodies in.

If you're at all interested in stuff like that, there was an excellent Japanese movie that came out a few years ago called "Okuribito". Here's the Youtube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KubOOWL2js

If posting links is not allowed, I'll be sure to remove it.

Just to clear a few things from a cultural standpoint, especially for Lumen, denying a body a proper burial is a very big insult. Even more so running away with it. Nobody, and I mean nobody Japanese, will take you in with a body and let you stash it. The Johnson would definitely be mad that you took the body away instead of letting it have a proper sending off, even if that meant any physical evidence of a crime would be burnt with it.

See, my way of thinking would be that letting her be cremated under a false name without ceremony to cover her murder would be the greater insult, Smiley has a 4 in Etiquette, so he would have a good idea of what is appropriate.  If you as the GM are telling me he couldn't figure out a way to handle this properly, we will leave it, but Smiley will probably tip off Tetsuo to the whys and wherefors after we leave.
Title: Re: [OOC] In the Land of the Falling Sun

Yes but we only need them to play "nice" for NOW, they can fall off a waterfall later

Something for Kuren and Pipebomb to consider.

Cultural note:

"Hostess clubs" are typically bars where people (mainly men) go and talk to "hostesses". There is an hourly fee on top of the drinks. The "hostesses" are women that work for the bar and are there to listen and talk to people that come in. The patrons are expected to pay for the "hostesses's" drinks. After a number of visits, if a hostess "likes" a patron, she will hint that she is free for dinner, at which point one can arrange a "date" and take her to a hotel after the meal, if a suitable monetary "gift" is presented.

The difference between a hostess club and a snack bar is the staff. In hostess clubs, the "hostesses" are Japanese. In snack bars, the "hostesses" are of any other nationality, typically Filipino, Chinese, Korean, etc. Most hostess clubs are reserved for the Japanese clientele, as they are the only ones that can possibly "understand" the rules.

Title: Re: [OOC] In the Land of the Falling Sun
Post by: HydroRaven on <08-21-13/0557:46>
Not odd at all as long as she looks Japanese.

Basically what I'm telling you is unless you succeed at a negotiation/con roll, you'll have a tough time getting in just because of your physical appearances.

In Japan, being called "boss" or "社長" is both a sign of respect and of familiarity. She's not trying to make it sound like a business transaction, she's trying to be cute and familiar, but at the same time giving you the respect you deserve, being that you clearly look to be above your two other friends on the social ladder.

When you sleep under card board you got to at least get your 8 hours.

bringing out her eyes and high cheeckbones and generally giving herself the trid starlet look.

Title: Re: [OOC] In the Land of the Falling Sun
Post by: Crossbow on <09-01-13/2332:17>
Just because I am finding this somewhat frustrating as a player, I am just wanting to be clear here.

Because the average person in Japan in 2072 has some level of racism in his make-up, we as a group are pretty much constantly operating on level with pondscum to most anyone we meet here right?

I mean Smiley and Pipe are Gaijin, not sure who is worse since I am pretty sure there is a general Asian issue with Amerinds, but Pipe is Californian so I think it is a jumpball who would be first, Mia is a mixed blood, which makes her trash too, and Jubei is a meta, so he is scum.  So we went out without the one guy who is not going to be hated before he ever opens his mouth, and he is probably considered to be stupid for hanging around with us.

Why did I decide to play this guy again?  :)
Title: Re: [OOC] In the Land of the Falling Sun
Post by: Lumen on <09-02-13/0000:06>
I was surprised so many people chose to play foreigners/metas.  I thought the xenophobia in the society was clear.  That's why I went with a Japanese human ;)
Title: Re: [OOC] In the Land of the Falling Sun
Post by: Muscular_Bevar on <09-02-13/0222:49>
i was born and raised in the country to one local parent. i didnt think i would look that different given that the other race has a similar skin tone, and figured being essentially a make-up artist, i could make myself look more local than the locals, but none of that seems to matter... obviously didnt realise how hardcore and across the board the racisim was going to be.
Title: Re: [OOC] In the Land of the Falling Sun
Post by: HydroRaven on <09-02-13/0407:47>
To be fair, for Mia, had she not dropped her spell, the girls wouldn't have said anything.

But yeah, I was surprised by how many non-Japanese human characters people kept on throwing at me. But it doesn't mean the game will be unplayable; just a bit more difficult, that's all.

@Crossbow

Basically you went to a more "conservative" drinking hole without the one guy that could make you look better. And most people would have a better image of you if you hang around with a "pure-bred" Japanese than have a negative image of him for hanging out with you. Kind of like "he can't be that bad since one of us is hanging with him" type thing.

Hey Hydro, finally got a sec to deal with this and found what I was looking for:

"That sounds very tasty, let's get a bottle." Smiley says, settling and sipping the other drink, "Back home my name is David White Cloud, though I suppose that would be White Cloud David here, I think.  What is your family name?"

@Smiley, Mia & Yaibei

Makoto smiles at you and says "Nothing special, a mother and a father. What about you, Smiley-san?"

Emphasis added by me, did I just catch a gm slip?  If so WELCOME TO THE CLUB! :)  If not I will be rolling initiative I think.

As far as planning our next move I was going to debrief the team on Kuren's findings after digging through the com for a few hours.   Hopefully DNA tests will come back soon but our next lead is the male from the apartment.   Also looking more into the vintage camera.

I'll save the whole detective speal for the IC post.

Kuren we do NOT know these three, they just happened to be at the meet! Me, you and Pipebomb will just have to finish the... me, you and...pipebomb......

Hydroraven, unless this girl is not what she seems, she will not be able to push Smiley away. I can roll it if I need to, but unless I glitch he has got her on subdual combat I think.

When she speaks out like that, Smiley is a lot more concerned about the reactions of the other hostesses and the restaurant staff than her.

That's the thing: there are no "alleys" per say in Neo-Tokyo, just a bunch if sporadic "in-between buildings" walkways. So it's possible to to walk through some of them, but most times you have to walk in the streets.

Okay, so because I don't have a visual on this, I need to know if what I want to do is feasible.  First, no way do I let them surround us before I act, be even still, is it possible to either make a hole for Mia and the girl in the direction we were headed or keep them off her and let her get out on her own?  Ideally I see Yaibei and I shoving them into one of those narrow pathways and covering it from pursuit.
Title: Re: [OOC] In the Land of the Falling Sun
Post by: HydroRaven on <09-29-13/0101:21>
Smiley is basically carrying a body, so unless you drop her on the ground the other guys can easily surround you before you have time to get to an alley. You could use your action as an interrupt if you wanted to, but basically the order is Yaibei, Grunt 5, Grunt 2-3, Grunt 1-4-Mia, Pack Leader-Smiley.

sorry guys. i was away, an unexpeceted turn of events and i am aware u dudnt give notice. it did ocour to me later but i figured with the pace things had been going not much was likely to happen during the three days i was gone. that being said, since starting i have finally ogtten a job and not one where i have access to computers or even a mobile to get on the net so im prolly being cut down to once a day anyway. obviously your call hydro, if you want us back on board or want to let Mia slide out, no hard feelings.

I can work with once a day, but you need to give me some form of notice if you drop off the grid.

soz man, wasn't planned and while coverage is fine in the city, getting stuck out in the bush of australia doesnt leave you with alot of options...

So I should wait and let Mia do her thing first, but for the record, I am prepared to go full defense if attacked and let the girl fall to the ground.

TOTALLY OFF TOPIC: Australia huh?  Who are you voting for to stay in the house?  :)  (I am playing catch up on episodes so I am still over a week behind, I just watched the show where Ben came back after the false eviction.  :)

hydro did you want an initiative roll?

should i be seeing a list of init's or will you just let us know when we are up for combat? is that what we are waiting on?
Title: Re: [OOC] In the Land of the Falling Sun
Post by: HydroRaven on <10-02-13/0427:33>
We're waiting on any action from you. The pack leader asked you a question, so you can either talk to him or try to do something else while the other guys close their circle around you. I put the list a few posts back, but here it is again, updated this time:

Yaibei, Grunt 5, Grunt 2-3-Mia, Grunt 1-4, Pack Leader-Smiley.
Title: Re: [OOC] In the Land of the Falling Sun
Post by: Crossbow on <10-04-13/0005:34>
Okay I have a real problem with this, I understand that I am at the low end of the initiative at this point and we are basically all holding actions, but I have made it clear that Smiley is not letting them put hands on Makato, let alone moving her.  The conversation has taken a certain amount of time, to the point where I would think it reasonable that Smiley could at least defend against them trying to get to her, which he would do.
Title: Re: [OOC] In the Land of the Falling Sun
Post by: HydroRaven on <10-04-13/0014:04>
So, as they're moving in, what is Smiley doing? I did post that they were moving in on her, but nobody reacted to it. I'll give you the chance to modify your post, but you have to tell me what you're doing, not just "I won't let them do it".
Title: Re: [OOC] In the Land of the Falling Sun

To specify, Mia got attacked only once, but the attacker got 2 hits.

Alright, go for second passes.
Title: Re: [OOC] In the Land of the Falling Sun
Post by: HydroRaven on <10-05-13/2040:23>
So, Smiley is at the end of the pass. Yaibei and Mia (if she has a second pass) go first.
Title: Re: [OOC] In the Land of the Falling Sun
Post by: Crossbow on <10-05-13/2106:52>
Not sure how that works when you cast increased Reflexes, I don't think you get the additional passes right away, but I could be wrong.
Title: Re: [OOC] In the Land of the Falling Sun
Post by: HydroRaven on <10-05-13/2110:37>
It doesn't say it's delayed, so I'll allow it to act now. Mia, your move.

Just to recap: 3 grunts are injured, 1 of them on the ground, another one bleeding and clutching his sides, a third one with a wound on his forearm. One grunt is on Smiley (the one he will hit next) and one on Mia. The leader of the pack is also trying to take care of Mia.
Title: Re: [OOC] In the Land of the Falling Sun
Post by: Crossbow on <10-07-13/1851:43>
So unless there is some further mishap to the situation, we drop Makato with Pipebomb, and then link up with the rest of the team, for our next move.

So by the time you get into Pipebomb's ride and start driving, it's 9:30. Kuren has not yet gotten out of his place, and J is just bumming it out.

Title: Re: [OOC] In the Land of the Falling Sun
Post by: Muscular_Bevar on <10-08-13/1157:28>
there are some spells and drugs that alleviate sleep, which all say that it gets dangerous at 72 hrs. survival is used for living off the land and that gets checked once a day with perma stun happening till decent rest can be found (is based on a combination of lak of sleep, food, water etc. tho) dont think there are hard and fast rules on it tho...
Title: Re: [OOC] In the Land of the Falling Sun
Post by: HydroRaven on <10-09-13/0236:40>
So the club gang (Smiley & Yaibei) are in Pipebomb's van, asking the rest to meet them somewhere. The thing is, Kuren and J have already posted things they will do, but later (we're playing with 2 timelines right now). So we can either edit some stuff (for Kuren and J) or just say they they replied they were going to the club and not meeting the rest. Your call.

And since I didn't find anything on the matter, if Smiley goes past noon without sleeping, just put a -1 on rolls until he gets a chance to get a good night's sleep.

By driving you mean paying for the cab lol. Like you said I'm more interested in the com then interrogating a young girl.  If Smiley is insistent he'll agree as long as it doesn't interfere but I think for continuity it'll be easier to just meet up with the rest of the party.

Kuren doesn't find anything except the factory stuff (the company support phone number, etc.) No outgoing/incoming mail except for the "welcome to (provider)!", no incoming/outgoing calls, etc. As far as you can tell, this is no different than any disposable commlink you can buy.

Well crud.  Is there at least something I can roll to maybe track it back to the vendor that sold it?

Also I know our two timeframes were out of whack so the call that Crossbow just posted about; when exactly would that be coming in?  I think it'll be a lot less confusing if we just meet back up and stay together.  Plus if I have to Kuren can program in a backdoor to quickly get back in the system and continue probing the com later on.
Title: Re: [OOC] In the Land of the Falling Sun

Yeah, the time difference is becoming a PITA, so let's just pretend it's 12:45 when you get the call, and you just finished hacking the commlink.

And no, you can't find where the link was bought from. If you hack the provider you could find a record, but that's another story.

Wanna clear something with you Hydro for future actions. Pipebomb has the paranoid quality so it wouldn't be out of character for him to do regular sweeps for bugs and trackers. I don't want it to seem like metagaming when I get around to it.

People are walking in the streets, but no stalls. The shops are all in buildings, with the streets so narrow you have a hard time telling the difference between a street and a back alley. As a consequence, people are circulating everywhere, back alleys included.

@Kuren

You know that the Shinzo-gumi is a medium-sized yakuza organization. They are rumoured to have a political pipeline or a megacorp pipeline (what's the difference anyways?).

The data search for the name tells you he's an official made man for the Shinzo-gumi. Arrested twice for intimidation and assault, released twice.

Only an address for their official place of business (and you should know that in Japan, yakuza gangs are legal, as long as all the members are registered with the authorities and that their "company" is clearly indicated on their front door).
Title: Re: [OOC] In the Land of the Falling Sun
Post by: Crossbow on <01-20-14/0945:24>
Yakuza may be legal as an entity, but members of the clan still commit crimes when they act in the gang's interests right?  What I mean is that if we can track down this guy, it is still a crime that he killed her, so that would be something that if we turned over the evidence to the authorities would be a bad thing.

I am trying to figure out a way to get to this guy without doing the whole fingernails and pliers thing. ;)
