If I can get my local group sold on it, is there any upside to trying to play through the season 4 missions before GenCon? (Vs playing older seasons, or non-missions as we get reacquainted with the game,)

Mechanically, carrying bonuses over to your Season 5 characters? No. Season 5's a new edition, and it's all new characters.
But, uh, you get to play games, which to lots of people is kind of an "upside," isn't it?

No. Fuck fun.

Based on everything I've heard, both on the forums and from catalyst/missions staff, it sounds like there is going to be a complete reset. There have been no announcements of bonuses going out to people that played the previous seasons, and they have explicitly stated that there will be no carrying over characters from season 4 to season 5. Everyone will be remaking new characters for the new season. I suppose you could remake your same character, but it would technically just be using the same concept again...
That said, there is no reason for your group to necessarily avoid the Season 4 missions, but no, there does not seem to be an expectation of direct character benefit for having played the previous season(s).

Playing is an upside, but it doesn't sound like it's more of an upside than playing free missions from previous seasons to get the mission format down. So I think we are going that way to get ourselves introduced.

It's been mentioned that at least one of the personalities from Season 4 will be tagging along with us to Chicago in Season 5, so that might be a reason, right there. Even though it won't impact your character, it'll give a broader understanding and appreciation of whatever tale that Bull and the Missions writers will be spinning for us, at least when it comes to that character. Even if it's just an homage here or there, being on the inside and understanding references is always fun :D
