Title: Cybereyes
Post by: 忍 on <08-03-17/2249:34>
How do you imagine cybereyes to look? More like real eyes or more like machinery?

I've always imagined the cyber eye realism depends on the grade, tho i guess it depends on how the person getting them wants the eyes to look.

BTW, aren't those eye covers over Batou's eyes

I figured Batou has similar cybereyes to Molly Millions and Adam Jensen (when he has his shades on).

Anyway, "normal" cybereyes are just a replacement of your normal eyeballs. So will look similar and not super noticeable. With that said, it'd be sweet if there were obvious cybereyes and ears with a bit extra capacity. But considering it's just flavor, it probably just looks like however, the character wants them to look like.

Basic cybereyes look like normal eyes, though different enough that you can tell if you're perceptive. However, there are a great many cosmetic mods, from obviously technological ones like Batou, to cat-like looks, to anime eyes, and so on. As you go up in grade, the more 'lifelike' they'd become, I reckon.

Used to be you paid more in both cash and essence to have more lifelike eyes; the standard was the Batou / Molly Millions 'silver cover' look. That said, anything that's fluffed as a 'retinal modification' may have a bit of visibility, like images #3 and #5.

P. 453 Core Rulebook:
Quote
Cybereyes are available in any shape or color, from “almost natural” to all chrome to solid glowing purple and everything in between. Some models have their color and pattern easily altered by downloading a new skin.

In short, there's no standard, the sky's the limit. Go wild if you want, or keep them to basic human shades.

Curious. Since essence loss is based on the fact that your body further away from its natural state, you'd think that if anything more lifelike eyes would cost less essence.

Which is reflected in the various grades of cyberware.

How the plastic and wiring looks is not what defines how far from the body it strays, but rather how well said system meshes with your body baseline, which is why the better the grade the less the essence cost.

SR5 page 453: "Cybereyes are available in any shape or color, from “almost natural” to all chrome to solid glowing purple and everything in between. Some models have their color and pattern easily altered by downloading a new skin."

In the movie The Last Action Hero, the villain (Mr. Benedict, played by Charles Vance) had a missing eye, and a collection of different glass eyes to fit the socket. He had one with a crosshair pattern, a vertical cat's eye pupil, an eight-ball, even a smiley face, and he changed them frequently. Street samurai can do the same thing, even more easily. Not only can a cybereye look like whatever you want it to, you can also change its appearance on the fly ... [blink] blank chrome for business, [blink] ordinary brown irises for blending in, [blink] neon blue for clubbing, and so on.

* Lots of gear comes with color-changing coatings that can be controlled wirelessly. See also the Fichetti Tiffani Needler (p.425), concealable holster (p.431), electrochromic clothing (p.437), etc.

That ... makes no sense. Accepting the cybernetics, the conversion of flesh to machine, is what does it. How the machine looks has no relation to it; how deeply it interacts with the flesh does. The lifelike eyes had a greater impact because it replaced and interacted with more things - the eyeball, sure, but also the muscles that control it, that sort of thing. The sheened one just covered it up, used electronics to look this way or that.

Okay, that's an important detail I was missing.
