Title: SR4 rigger
Post by: Raiden on <08-01-13/1149:12>
so I want to make a rigger, I have never made on before and was wondering if there were any tips on them, what skills, attributes, and ware you wanted. and good drones to recommend. sorry for the broad area question but I really have no idea what I am doing when it comes to riggers. also nothing that is disallowed by the SRM FAQ please.

Okay just to make this less broad what attributes and skills should a rigger prioritize?

hey mate,
you'll want a decent REA score as all your piloting is based on reaction.
a good LOG score is useful as it links to your build/repair stuff for fixing busted drones and installing mods
decent piloting skills across the board are helpful
AGI is linked to gunnery so if you're doing fire support you'll want some points pumped into that too.

as for cyber:
reaction enhancers are a good start, muscle toner is nice, rigger implant is golden too.
if you've got augmentation, take the nanohive and VCR booster nanites.
logic boosting cyber is good too

Skills:
perception
electronic warfare
all piloting skills
armourer
main mechanic skills (automotive/aeronautics)
gunnery
you'll also have decent commlink so can be useful to have some hacking skills

Gear:
stacks of drones for diff purposes (recon/combat/air support)
a manservant with pilot 4 and profession 4 can help with build/repair tests
excellent commlink;
-command 6 (optimized + ergonomic)
good ECCM
high firewall
high response+system
non-standard wireless link
response enhancers
hotsim module
best biofeedback filter you can run

repair kits/shops for main types of your drones
heavily modded van/car for wheelman duties

this is what I got so far.. seems reaction is only good if you want to do meat stuff. VR using the cars response + your skill

not a bad start. BOD5 is pretty high for a non-combat character though, do you need it that high?
don't forget to put your rigger adaptation in your van either.
anything you're gonna jump into needs decent response, anything you're controlling in AR or meatspace you use your own attribs for, so dont neglect REA.

your drone sensors need optimising.
That rating 6 camera can take: low-light, vision enhance 3, vision mag, image link etc etc
Make sure you squeeze as much as you can into the sensor packages for drones, it comes in really handy if you're gonna run a tacnet (which can be a really good idea for some builds) and just for all running purposes really.
I usually put the improved sensor array mod and a stack of armour onto combat drones.
i fill the sensor suite with a couple of cameras (with smartlink, imagelink, thermo, lowlight, vision mag and vision enhance spread across the two. one acts as the "gun" cam, one is for recon or backup incase of thermal smoke), an UWB radar, a motion sensor and a tricked out microphone (spatial recogniser, audio enhance 3).
Make sure you've got a smartlink in the camera (+imagelink) and smartgun on the drones and make sure you've got the best clearsight and targetting software you can get. this covers you for remote control, command and jumping in so the drone can operate well under all circumstances.

High rating sensor software can be good on recon drones too. facial recogniser and vehicle identification software can be handy for stake outs or shadowing missions if you've got the spare cash.

artillery is a terrible gunnery specialistion. unless you're mounting a howitzer on a drone or vehicle, it isnt going to help you.
you want ballistic so it applies to all standard weaponry (99% of the stuff you're going to fire from it)

OK. Did it in chummer so gotta figure out how to add that sensor stuff and if the sensor as a whole goes up. Also its supposed bto be ballistics as a spec.

You can add it:
Add camera as gear
Go to camera and add vision enhancement as a plugin
Works a treat :-)

As much as I love Chummer, that is one flaw I did notice. There's no way to add in (without paying extra), during create mode, the sensors that Arsenal says come with the sensor suite as standard.

yeah, I notice that chummer does not increase the sensor rating of the drone even when I tinker with it, hmm. gotta handwrite this one out it seems :/

For that one, there's a check box in options for that.

"Use calculated vehicle sensor ratings" under Optional Rules.

well it looks like you dont have any weapons attached to your combat drones?
if you select the weapon mount in chummer and go to vehicle->add weapon you can add stuff via that.
you'll probably want to put "extended clip,Drum 100" mod onto your drone weapons as they wont be able to reload themselves, a smartgun and image link on their main camera is always a good option too.
the steel lynx is big enough that you can add multiple weapon mounts to it. i'd go for a re-inforced weapon mount and stick an LMG/MMG on it, as well as an armtech mgl-12 on it too.
Pimp its sensors to the max,
Click the large drone sensor:
go to the "add vehicle" button, but press the down arrow to expand your options.
go to gear and click "add as plugin"
select sensor functions
install camera and whatever.
click the new camera and go back to "add as plugin"
go to vision enhancements and knock yourself out.
remember your availability limits though.
Your main camera can take smartlink, image link, vision mag, vision enhance 3 and flare compensation which should be good enough for main usage.
i always fit a backup camera on combat drones too that has all the alternative image modes, thermo/lowlight/ultrasound etc for when the going gets really tough and the thermal smoke starts flying.

your AGI is far too low btw. take a couple ranks oof muscle toner, its nice and cheap and boosts your main skill: gunnery

might as well take a full bevvy of software options on a pimped 'link like you've got. well worth taking edit/browse etc and a decent rating agent (3) for data searching and cybercombat defense.
i wouldnt bother implanting the commlink tbh, you'll need surgery to upgrade it or repair it which is a bit extreme

thats weird... my drones should have some ARs on them with one with a LMG, I am out of cash at this point so its hard to do anything really without cutting somewhere haha. I may get some LMGs later in the game but as its SRM (not events just a nice group running the SRMs) worried about being busted rather easily. also agi seems to be useless to my guy even when he is just commanding his drones. most of there sensor ratings are at 6 atm. and most should have smartgun/imagelink in them. so weird.gaaah lol. I need more moneyz

i always find that riggers have to max their nuyen allowance like deckers.
riggers are entirely about gear and can survive on pretty basic attribs.
You've got some pretty expensive cyber, so if you're allowed to take used, thats a good way to free up cash.
second hand vehicles can free up cash if they're allowed.
the other thing to remember is that logic isnt amazingly helpful to you if you're not doing much with it (first aid and mechanics etc) it might be cheaper to just dump the cerebral boosters and get a manservant drone with pilot 4 and profession 4 autosoft for your repairs.

The other thing to consider is that large drones are like mobile tanks. you're not realistically going to be able to use them on all but the heaviest of assaults.
maybe a small fleet of rotodrones would be more useful investment?
you can pack down a roto-drone or doberman into a backpack or store it in the boot (trunk) of your car.
sticking an AR with underslung grenade launcher each on a couple of rotodrones is more concealable and brings multiple threats to a fight. they dont need to drive in through a big doorway/garage and be carried in a large van and can serve multiple roles (ie one can scout ahead while the other covers your escape route)

as for AGI, if you're planning on walking in with your team and using that shotgun you'll need a better AGI, if you're sitting in the van while they do all the heavy lifting, you'll be fine.
the cost for 2 ranks of muscle toner is pretty negligible but the benefit is huge.

ok. also, what are the pros and cons of an implanted commlink?

Pro, erm...you don't have to carry it??
Cons: have to have surgery everytime you want to alter it. If you don't have a data jack you're forced into wireless comms.

Note a second commlink with fake sins on it is always a good idea
