Title: Background music
Post by: Turtletron on <09-06-10/1427:04>
Hello everyone,

I don't know if I should post it here but it looked like the best place to do so. I would like to know what kind of music you like to play in background during your game and if the player likes  the feeling it gives to the game(even if you don't play music usually feel free to give your ideas)

Here are some music group/songs that i usually play during my games:

"Johnny Mnemonic Movie Soundtrack" is a good starter
"Grendel" - Harsh Generation, Void Malign, Remnants and Dirty
Some good ol' "Daft Punk" - a lot of their songs can fit in the setting I believe
"Harmony Steel" - all the free songs she shares from her website www.alarinmusic.com
For a little more matrix style music there is "Machinae Supremacy" - Fury, Seventeen, Sidology Episode 1,2,3 , Legion of Stoopid
For those who played the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis Shadowrun games, the song in the games, even if old, bring kind of a nice nostalgic feeling(well, for those who played)
Also "Static-X"- Black & White, Shadow Zone, Cold and many others
And a lot of other songs that I happened to find on the net.

Please feel free to had more to the list, since everyone's  taste for music is different

I was thinking on this the other day. It mostly depends on where the runners are. If they are in clubs/bars, I try to match the music to the atmosphere (Goblin rock = Russian/Slavic Death Metal; Elvish trance = Enya or likewise; Techno = Techno...)

If it's on the run time, I'll grab music from various movie soundtracks like Serenity, Dark Knight, Star Wars (if I want to be blatant about the mood), or some classical stuff that instantly recognizable (like Oh Fortuna (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HMQOX3h7ZI)).

I've used the Ghost in the Shell soundtracks (movie and TV seasons) to good effect.
Garbage 2.0 works pretty well for some portions of the game.
Back in the day, Queensryche's Operation: Mindcrime was essential listening for those of us who wanted to get that oppressive corp/dirty streets feeling.
Catalyst by A Dark Halo provides some interesting techno/industrial/death metal mix.  Good for forays into the bowels of industry (unsurprisingly).
Oddly enough, Butthole Surfers does a good job with lawlessness.

Oh, and Billy Idol: Cyberpunk (http://www.amazon.com/Cyberpunk-Billy-Idol/dp/B00000IN06) is a great album. No matter what anyone else thinks.

Man I always thought way out of the box on this. I'd grab some Celtic Mood stuff, throw it in with classic Clash or Sex Pistols, and then look up some Steve Vai solo albums or some experimental rock from classic 80s icons who are still in the biz. Guys I know still talk about listening to Paul Simon singing an acoustic Sound of Silence. Mix the obvious with the not-so-obvious.

No music on we talk alot and one player would whine he can't hear anything. (yes even at very low barly able to hear levels)

I don't put on music much, but when I do I use a lot of noise rock: Melt-Banana, Lightning Bolt, The Locust, Foetus, Butthole Surfers, Deerhoof, Boredoms, etc.  Mostly because it's the main part of my music collection, but also because it often fits surprisingly well.

Any group named Butt Hole Surfers will never see any air time in my house.  ;D

Two Steps From Hell has some great background music, you can find it on Amazon in MP3s.

The Bourne Supremacy soundtrack has some decent tracks for chase scenes, track 2 off of Casino Royale is great for that though.

The Dark Knight soundtrack for suspense.

Phil Collins...The Brazilian is good for runners preping their gear.

Funny. Most of the pieces quoted here are titles I'd never use, for one (or both) of these two reasons:

The OSTs of movies and computer games, however, are highly suitable for RPG use. Just off the top of my head: Ghost in the Shell, Metal Gear Solid, Fallout, Max Payne, Iron Man, Unreal Tournament, The Island, Hackers, ... . "Regular" musicians: Vangelis, The Prodigy, Interlace, ... and loads of other artists doing electronic music.

I am collecting movie and game soundtracks for the sole purpose of using them in my p&p games. So far I have nearly 300 OSTs and I have everything converted to MP3 for easy access at the gaming table, sorted into categories ("Moods", "NPC themes", "locations", etc.)

Grab some old time stuff too. Sure, it's blatant, but if you start playing the Jaws theme during a game, you can bet for damn sure your players will start to freak out.

Music played really depends on what the GM is shooting for as the tone of the game. That being said, I made a list from my collection:

X-Men & X-Men 2
Lethal Weapon
T2: Judgement Day (invasion of the jarheads?!  ;) )
Universal Soldier
Men in Black
The Saint
Total Recall
The Crow
The Matrix etc
Stargate SG-1 (sort of)
Angel: Live Fast, Die Never
24
Blade Runner
Halo 3

Title: Re: Background music
Post by: Chaotic Insane on <09-09-10/2030:57>
A lot of this will more be like... mood setters. I'm just going through my iTunes picking out things that go along with the setting but may or may not be game-over-able... I've starred the ones that are instrumental as I'm one of those people that just subconsciously starts singing along if I even know some of the words and I know how much that annoys people. And GMs.

*-The "Laced/Unlaced" album by Emilie Autumn. Instrumental classical violin+Harpsichord/electric violin+harpsichord+industrially techno-y bits of utter win. As much of a proud plague rat as I am, I don't even suggest anything of hers with lyrics though if you intend on trying to game over it. o.0;;
*-Ghost in the Shell. I'm sure there's instrumental stuff in there.
*-Any of the .Hack// games/anime music. I'm particularly fond of "Cyber Slum" Will come with and without lyrics.
-Aural Vampire is a pretty good techno/darkwave japanese band.
-Abney Park is just awesome. Their later work is more geared towards steampunk, but their older stuff is a bit more general-purpose awesome. Especially The Wrong Side. I believe it's rather fitting for the setting.
*-Nine Inch Nails. They have a TON of instrumental (and ACTUALLY free! Creative Commons for the win!) industrial diddies actually.
*-Silent Hill soundtracks! Dark-themed industrial goodness. I kinda worship Akira Yamaoka just a little bit.
-"Dragon Town" album by Alice Cooper, as well as the tracks "Dirty Diamonds," "Bad Place Alone," and "Nothing's free."
-REPO! The Genetic Opera. Hell. Just go watch the movie. Add in metahumans and I can guarantee you could make a campaign out of it.
*-I've always been fond of Apocalyptica for BG music...
*-Cirque Du Soliel. <3 Not actually instrumental but really, good luck following along with most of the lyrics.
-"Comalies" and "Senzafine" by Lacuna Coil
*-That one video game symphony (Play I think?). Love them.
-Stolen Babies if you don't mind a bit of screaming.
-I guess Shiny Toy Guns could work? I've only heard a little of their stuff.
*-Tartanic. <3 Bagpipe band with a modern twist.
-Voltaire's another "I guess it could work I haven't heard much."

aaaand that's everything in my iTunes.

At in-person games I've yet to see music being used. When playing online, I'll cue up a playlist consisting of metal, speed metal, heavy metal, and some techno.

I agree, but sometimes it just depend of the players, some people are easily distracted, just try and see if it's ok for everyone.

I have collected a number of sound FX, guns, smg fire, explosions, screams, cars tearing off into the night, etc.. While I don't consider this background music and something that can be abused it can add a lot. First time I used it was for Shadowrun, the sound of man screaming as he falls tacked on a clip of a crash (like his body hit a parked car below). The startled looks that I got from my players was priceless.

Given the quality of even of the free software to modify clips, it might be something worth looking at.  ;D
Title: Re: Background music
Post by: The_Gun_Nut on <09-14-10/1816:18>
My hearing is quite sensitive, so what constitutes distracting to me is on the subliminal level for my players.  I like moody music and themes, and they tend toward quieter tracks with more bass, which humans pick up on in a very subtle way.  It can really help set the tone for horror, too.
Title: Re: Background music
Post by: Mystic on <09-15-10/2141:15>
Ditto on the music being distracting. When READING Shadowrun, I do have some favorites.

KMFDM: with no particular song
Crystal Method: The Replacement Killers
Nightwish: specifically 10th Man Down, End of All Hope, and Ghost Love Score
White/Rob Zombie: Supercharger Heaven, Dragula, Black Sunshine (Riggers Theme), Living Dead Girl, and one I think is very appropriate for SR; More Human Than Human.
Pat Benetar: Shadows of the Night. (Laugh if you dare...)  ;)

I also have fond memories of listening to The Matrix soundtrack while reading The Dragon Heart Saga. Good times.

i have to say just about anything by DragonForce especially "Soldiers of the Wasteland" and "Through the fire and the flames"

acoustic bon jovi,
themes to Vandread, Full Metal Alchemist, Full metal Panic, Tri-gun, and believe it or not Inuyasha
bad company

thats about all i can think of that hasnt already been mentioned, though "Pirates who dont do anything" and "Lovely bunch of Cocconuts" are good for comedic moments

Metallica's Fuel and Motorbreath are nice for chase scenes. Both are basically rigger themes.

Anything by Funker Vogt. Edit- Gunman, Tragic Hero, and Pure War especially.

Sometimes distracting is what you're looking for.
You will have little time to stop and think when engaged in combat.  Make thinking harder and dudes get into it more.

For instance, the crew is tooling down the I-405 when the Hellhounds come up the onramp.
Cue Acid Bath and start up the chase sequence. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_jvyXhW_9E)

I don't know what the music was yesterday buy it was reminding me of the stuff in the Matrix movies. The club mixes they used. Not bad, but after a while the same beat gets annoying. Now some of the stuff we listened to BEFORE the game was hee larry us!

When lyrics are more acceptable, like in combat, I like metal, surf punk, and alternative rock.

Missed this earlier.

Yes. We use a lot of technoish stuff apparently. Mostly .Hack//howevermanytheyhaveoutnowIlosttrack, Ghost In The Shell, Aeon Flux, Eve Online, with some Cowboy Bebop thrown in for pizazz.

I keep trying to poke Doom into adding Silent Hill and Nine Inch Nails' instrumentals to that list but he doesn't want to on the basis that I tend to reflexively crank up either when they come on and he'd really rather not me poke his laptop because I'm a walking EMP field that makes electronics spontaneously fail for no particular reason.

might go good with that list, Angelone.

The right Jazz can also be really excellent to play to as well. Theres also some good hiphop jazz fusion out there that isn't too distracting.

Wow, Chaotic, I watch all those anime. Love the music from Cowboy Bebop too. Dot hack sign has got some great music for D&D, but it's not everyone's cup of tea. But yeah, anime and games are a great source of tabletop gaming music.

I mentioned this to an old GM chum of mine who sent a group of happy little runners to Kyoto for a run. Part of it was to infiltrate a nightclub. He told me that he used a lot of anime as the background for the club called "Baby Seal"...*groan*. But he used themes from Bleach, Black Lagoon, Trigun, Vision of Escaflowne, Ruroni Kenshin, Full Metal Alchemist, Naruto, Gundam Wing, and Gundam 00. Not bad, but I remarked that he must have ripped off Cartoon Network for ideas.

It really depends...
Dead Can Dance, some Goa Trance tracks when it gets spiritual...
Silent Stream of Goddes Elegy, Dream Teather, Therion and such when it gets dark...
Elend when it gets really dark!!
Rammstein, Paradise Lost, Prodigy, for some combat sequencies (like a pub fight in Orcish underground)
50 cent and others, when it is time to kill some gangstas or posers...
Nine Inch Nails, Frontline Assembly, Kraftwerk, Die Krups etc to get the feeling of the streets, lights, hum and the atmosphere of the night city
Black Sun Empire when it comes to ride a car
ACDC and good old hevy metal for a bike :)
Morcheeba, US3 and other triphop ilusionists for a good time on the streets :)
Sepultura, Soulfly, Prodigy, Rob Zombie etc... for major clashes
Hammerfall, Nightwish, Stratovarius etc. for those heroic elves :D
...
...
..
.
old school Cypress Hill...you know...when its time to roll one :)

And many, many others, what players brought by or the mood asks. Lots of soundtracks, like Matrix, GITS, Heavy Metal 2000,  xXx, Platoon, Forest Gump, Full Metal Jacket, Batman...

I have yet to try music in any of my games....but it does look like a D&D game is picking up nearby. I'm probably gonna break out my Dream Evil albums for that. Their Dragonslayer album seems like it would be especially appropriate. As for SR....probably just look up some techno, most of my metal and rock (that being at least 90% of my music) doesn't fit the setting as I see it. Though Nujabes Battlecry (theme song from Samurai Champloo) would be a pretty cool theme song for a street sam.

Haven't yet, but would love to play some Kavinsky during a game. It's got sort of a built in, 80's nostalgia/videogamyness that screams cyberpunk to me.

I was thinking about this the other day as I was testing around with Roll20's interface. They have an audio stream imbedded in their program, and I wondered how one would go about utilizing music to help define the game.

My biggest fear would be that somebody would use the game as their own personal jukebox and just trample over the aesthetic of the game with Nickelback or anything that wouldn't potentially fit.

the Attitude book covers several popular bands and genres and i think the best approach would be to cast the discography of lesser known but essential Proto genre bands to each specific Shadowrun band. I don't have the Attitude source book with me but for example if there's a Shadowrun band that you wanted to sound like Black Sabbath, you could use Witch Finder General instead, and basically use all of their songs in every instance where the respective Shadowrun band is playing. They do this in films all the time, such as when they used Jonathan Davis' songs for Lestat in Queen of the Damned.

This would prevent most players from having catchy songs they know playing in the background and you would have musical continuity between runs while fleshing out the respective scenery. The only downside is that if you're not that familiar with music then it'll take for research to find proto bands that fairly represent an intended genre.

Hi.

I haven't touched a forum since I was in high school. Almost... 20 years? Jesus... Since I'm teaching myself the ways of the GM I figured I'd dig around for insight on the official Shadowrun-blah-blah-boards, and have been doing so for a few days now.

Anyway.

Music is and has always been the driving force for all things creative in my life. Before I started really diving into Shadowrun rules, and lore, I started building playlists for specific cyber-punk situations. I've sorted through thousands of tracks and Synth Wave is really what does it for me. Dreamy 70s, 80s, and 90s synths with modern production, and techno beats? Perfect.

I made this Spotify master playlist over a few month period:

And with my newbie blessing, I (hopefully) breathe life back into this thread.

Have you tried 808 State?

Old school. Honestly, I don't think I've ever listened to 808 State, and I have friends that would probably punch me in the face for even saying that.

I love having a background soundtrack to my game. I also listen to it while preparing for a game. I have a pretty extensive Spotify playlist for Shadowrun at this point. It's a lot of soundtracks including Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049, some of Thor: Ragnarok, the soundtrack for Shadowrun Dragonfall and Shadowrun Hong Kong are in there. Kravinsky's OutRun is there.

The sound of Shadowrun to me is definitely techno and from looking through the thread, it seems I'm not alone in that feeling. That's why it's a shock to me that it seems nobody has mentioned Carpenter Brut and the Trilogy album, or as I am known to call it, the unofficial Shadowrun soundtrack. I mean, you just have to look at the album cover and you get the impression Carpenter Brut set out to make a Shadowrun album. In my opinion, it delivers exactly what it promises.

Carpenter Brut is fantastic. Seriously tho, look at the Spotify playlist I linked up there. If Kavinski and Carpenter Brut are your thing, there's a lot to explore mixed into that thing. Synth/Retro wave have been getting a lot of hype lately so the artist base is growing fast.

Might be an unorthodox choice, but there are tracks in the OST for the game "Transistor" that fit the bill nicely, especially for infiltration sequences or unusual circumstances your party might face. ;D

"Vanishing Point", specifically, is great IMO for Matrix-related sections.
