The spell analyze device provides familiarity with the object in question and can give a significant dice pool bonus.  Your mystic adept may want to look into that as well.

Considering the number of hits it'd take to get any benefit from it, I see absolutely no problem with letting someone make the attempt.  It's what the spell is for, after all.

It takes a bunch to get any significant benefit from it, especially considering the penalty for sustaining an action.  A sustaining focus works well here, as does the spirit service, but those have their own set of issues to deal with.  So, like Critias said, it's pretty balanced.
