Have a way to fight (even a hacker with a light pistol has a lot of punch when firing Capsule Rounds with DMSO & Cyanide)
Have a way to investigate (drones, detection spells, contacts, etc, all count)
Have a way to make others better (buff spells, item acquisition, driving, knowsofts, sprites, etc)

A character with all three can almost always be doing something at a con table.
Missions Characters:
[SR4] Jax - Merc Technomancer
[SR5] Reece - Journalist TM

And for spirit's sake don't play a mysterious angsty lone wolf that barely ever speaks and seems to only have one job, that of standing in the corner wearing sunglasses looking cool.

It makes for horrible roleplay experiences, as it becomes difficult to justify actually interacting with the rest of the team.

Have some sort of built-in reason to participate.

I've always liked "I'm being paid for job success" as a motivation. Others need more.
"And if the options are "talk to him like a grown up" versus "LOLOLOL murder him in his face until he doesn't come back," I know which suggestion I'm making." - Critias

No team I'm on has ever had a problem with group think.
