Title: Group of spam-attempt accounts?
Post by: Michael Chandra on <06-06-18/1813:34>
Spotted this group of 6 in the online list, their profiles appear to be spam.
https://forums.shadowruntabletop.com/index.php?action=profile;u=140003
https://forums.shadowruntabletop.com/index.php?action=profile;u=142535
https://forums.shadowruntabletop.com/index.php?action=profile;u=142549
https://forums.shadowruntabletop.com/index.php?action=profile;u=140096
https://forums.shadowruntabletop.com/index.php?action=profile;u=140087
https://forums.shadowruntabletop.com/index.php?action=profile;u=140098

Edit: Spotted more just now. So we have the following IDs, sorted by id, including previous ones:
- 140003
- 140087
- 140096
- 140098
- 142549
- 142535
- 142754
- 145083

And there's a whole bunch more, such as 140100, but that one wasn't online.

Looks like someone else wants to simulate the Neo-Tokyo spam zone...

I've been banning and deleting spam accounts as they come in, and if there's more than one on an IP, I've been banning the IP (unless there's a valid account on the IP).

The only thing I think we can do to prevent spammers is turning on the Moderator Approval on new accounts. It would me we'd need to monitor the list as people register and verify them before allowing them to post.

And, the reason I delete the accounts is because (like in the case of ol' Herbert today), you can check off to delete all the posts with the account. Good ol' Herbert created 22 pages of posts before he was shut down.

I'm guessing the kill it with fire button is not an option?

That's the ban/delete account & posts Napalm attack I've been using.

I also did another harsher purge on the 0 post accounts - removed any that don't have at least one minute of active online time, or they have "fun" links in their profile.

Unfortunately the previous attempt to unleash some Black IC on the forum failed, so we're stuck with Spiders. -_-

Can you shadowban accounts? All these spammers had a yahoo messenger - something I think no normal user here ever displayed. Maybe you could add some automatic solution to catch these spam accounts that way.

Alas, we can only ban on IP Address, Host Name, Email, and User Name.

To necro this: Randomly spotted another. I'm guessing these accounts are trying to get their spam through bots crawling memberlists.

Thanks! I was planning on a search and destroy through the account list in the coming weeks, this motivates to get started sooner than later.

Wondering if there is a link to the uptake in traffic...more activity on the boards (or more users?) is somehow "monitored" and flagging us for more activity. Might be overthinking this... ???

I've also wondered if there's users/former users that put us on "lists"...

It's also completely possible that google or microsoft sold an account list from someone using hotmail or gmail.  That is, after all, how they monetize their free mail services.

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this or not, but I noticed a new user who is only posting links to websites (i.e. not comments, etc., just the links):

You can report individual posts to mods with the report button and the entire staff gets a mail I think.

Edit Incidentally, "spambot" is the first term on my fill suggestions on both laptop and mobile when filling in the reason for the report. Usually I'm too lazy to type the entire phrase and just tap the suggestion. =P
