Since all the cool kids are posting their sheets, I figured I might as well do it, too.
Name: Eric Byrnes
Alias: Priest
Race: Human
Sex: Male
Nationality: UCAS
Lifestyle: Low (3 months purchased)
Karma Spent: N/A
Physical Description: Priest is smelly and disheveled, "the work of the Lord" leaving little time for trivialities such as hygiene. He has green eyes, thinning orange hair, and relatively pale skin. His build is wiry and thin, and he carries himself with a jittery, nearly-manic energy.
Personality/background Eric Byrnes came from a highly religious Irish Catholic family on the East Coast of the UCAS. He moved to attend seminary school in Seattle at age eighteen, intent on either being a theological professor of some type, or possibly even a priest. This, however, was not God's plan for Eric.
During his final year at his college, Eric Awakened. His family viewed magic with suspicion, believing it to be the work of the devil, and Eric and his family had a falling out. They haven't spoken since.
Previously, Eric had been eyeing his incredibly bleak career prospects with increasing trepidation. Theological scholars were not exactly in high demand, and many of the good churches or academic posts were filled with elves who'd been doing it for decades. But with magic came a great deal of new opportunity. Sensing his potential, Eric was swiftly employed in Ares Macrotechnology's Seattle branch. He was to train the magical members of their security force, and help design their magical defense systems.
Eric's days as a corporate wagemage were horribly soul-crushing. He felt like he'd sold his beliefs for the proverbial bag of silver. His depression took a toll on his work performance, and from there, things swiftly spiraled out of control.
Ever since his Awakening, Eric had interacted with a strange spirit in the astral realm who helped him, guided him, and taught him some of his first spells. This spirit was actually an incarnation of Fire-Bringer, but he appeared to Eric to be a bright, burning ball of warm light. Eventually, Eric had an "epiphany" and "realized" that Fire-Bringer was God, and that he was "His" new prophet.
Fire-Bringer didn't want to deceive Eric, but he was afraid that telling the young zealot the truth would cause him to snap. Fire-Bringer could plainly see that Eric was a desperate man. He needed hope, so Fire-Bringer allowed him to believe.
Eric tried to share his new philosophy with his students and colleagues, and they naturally regarded him with great suspicion and skepticism. Displeased with his work performance and worried that his delusions might get out of hand and create a dangerous situation, Eric was "encouraged" to resign. It was tough for Ares Marotechnology to let a talented mage like that walk away, unemployed and alive, but then they realized they could just as easily hire him out as a shadowrunner. They'd still get to tap his considerable magical assets, but wouldn't have to deal with the fallout if he went off the deep end. It was a win-win, as far as they were concerned.
Eric was frankly relieved to be fired. It allowed him to concentrate on his new work; helping the needy, and writing his new book of the Bible. Eric truly believed he was a prophet of God, and his delusions of grandeur caused him ditch his SIN and withdraw from society. He took up residence in an abandoned building in one of the worst neighborhoods in Seattle and began his "new church," calling himself "Priest Bishop" or just "Priest" as he became known around the neighborhood. He handed out food to local homeless people whenever he had the means to do so, but most of Priest's time was spent hunched in his study.
Priest's study is little more than a closet tucked in a corner of an abandoned building. Here, Priest has used an antique computer terminal and printer unit (powered by a nearby generator) to plaster every inch of the walls and ceiling with his "New Gospel." Priest believes his magical abilities are a blessing from God, and that he can prophesize the future by examining the New and Old Testament. Priest's nonsensical, rambling "metaphysical equations" make no sense to anybody but him, but they actually represent his hermetic tradition. Priest learns his magic through intense study, a grueling process of trial-and-error that only his somewhat insane lifestyle can allow time for. When not distracted by a run, Priest has been known to spend up to eighteen hours a day typing away at his terminal. Once he spent two whole days, day and night, compulsively looking up and writing down every prime-numbered Bible verse.
Though more or less completely insane, Priest is still incredibly kind-hearted. Locals appreciate him for the free magical healing and food he has been known to provide to the downtrodden, and are more than happy to overlook the occasional rambling, shouting street sermon delivered at 3 AM for his continued services.
Priest's altruism rarely interferes with his shadowrunning, however. Due to what he believes is his elevated status as God's prophet, Priest feels like he doesn't have to follow the same rules as everybody else. He takes a very loose interpretation to Commandments six and eight, for instance. He even lets number four slide, on occassion. This means that Priest is always willing to do what is necessary to get the job done, provided he gets paid and can use his earnings to fund his new church.
After living in this state for about six years, Priest grew tired of the constant gang violence. He decided to informally back the Chulos gang, figuring that a little stability would do the neighborhood good. He began offering magical healing and even some training to Chulos gangsters. It wasn't long before they were hiring him for runs, as well.
