Title: Hockey Playoffs
Post by: PeterSmith on <04-11-11/1238:51>
The alternate title for this thread is: "Will this topic of conversation get killed on another Catalyst message board?"

First and foremost, I am a Blackhawks fan and I will speak from my perspective. The regular season ended yesterday with the Blackhawks backing into the 8th seed in the West. This is good, as I believe it leaves Carolina as the only team to win the Stanley Cup and then not make the playoffs the following season. This also keeps the Blackhawks from being the team with the highest point total and not make the playoffs, an "honor" held by Coach Q from his days in Colorado.

Looking at the rankings I'm actually glad the 'Hawks ended up in the 8th seed. We have matched up well against Vancouver the last few playoffs and I expect this season to be more of the same. I also think we'll do well against the Battle of the Californias winner. On the other hand the only way we'll ever have home ice is in the Finals and only if the Canadians, Horned Hamsters or the Rangers survive.

So what say you?

Go Hawks  ;D

In other words, what Mr. Smith said.

Nah. First off, 'hawks gotta make it there. ;)

Stars once again couldn't get it done.  I don't know why it takes them nearly a decade to understand that it was defense that won them the Cup.  The goalies they have burned through since can't do it by themselves.

Well, yeah. That's a given, just like it is for the other fifteen teams.

Be nice. It was petty bickering and one person's absolute refusal to accept logic that killed hockey conversations at the CBT forums. Though it was mostly that one person.

See if you can figure out what team he's a fan of. It's in this thread.

It was meant in the good natured spirit of teasing! Plus a little payback since FastJack disparaged my beloved Corps  ;D

Nothing but love, really.

(Seriously, I even got an ex GF a Hextall jersey for her birthday one year!)

It was her first birthday after they broke up.

I don't know if the 'Hawks will make it through this time, but it was quite the run last time, wasn't it?

I think the Canucks have a good chance, and are Canada's best bet of seeing a 'home team' win the Cup.  As long as you have at least one young Canadian star or up-and-comer on your team, you tend to have a decent Canadian following.

I thought the law said Canadians had to have at least a passing interest in hockey. How else would you explain things like federal election events getting pre-empted by a first-round playoff game? Wait, don't answer that. No politics. But hang on, hockey is religion in Canada so we shouldn't even be having this conversation...damnit, I'm going Runner on this one. Screw the rules, let's jam!

Religion breeds fanatics, heretics, and other extremists.

They're all wimps compared to Canadian Hockey Fans.

I think the Blackhawks will make it to the last round.
Personally I'm devoted to the Bossier City/ Shreveport Mudbugs.
The Jets have done so well in Phoenix, maybe they need to go home.

I'm a Wings fan.  What can I say?  They're the one team we have in this state that doesn't consistently suck.  Well, okay.  The Tigers do okay sometimes.

I have to hate the Wings as a Stars fan, but secretly I hope Modano gets like 20 goals in the playoffs, just to stick it to the Stars "management".

Heh.  That would be hilarious.

And I'm going into my usual Playoffs mode: Watch Detroit and hope they win.  If they lose, anyone but Pittsburgh is cool.  ;D

Living in the South, I don't get all the hockey love.  But then, I'm not a big sports fan, either.  I watch playoffs with my dad because, well, my dad likes to watch them, and it's more fun with other people present.

I do appreciate that hockey officially recognizes that you simply have to throw off your gloves and bust someone upside the head, every now and again.

Hockey's the only sport I watch and care anything about.  The others all bore the hell out me.

I'm lived in the south my entire life, and I'm proud of it.

I also think that hockey is the greatest (team) sport on Earth.  If you look there really is a pretty shocking amount of hockey down here, most good size cities have a minor league team.

NHL

Dallas Stars

AHL

Houton Aeros
Texas Stars (Cedar Park)
San Antonio Rampage

CHL

Allen Americans
Amarillo Gorillas
Corpus Christi IceRays
Laredo Bucks
Odessa Jackalopes
Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (Hidalgo)
Texas Brahmas (Richland Hills)

San Angelo had a team until a couple of years ago.

Ok so not every city of a major size has one but more than most people know about I'd reckon.

Eh, lots of northerners don't get the South's love of NASCAR either.

I understand a bit of it.  Comes from a father with a love for it.

My fiction character, Nas, was a NASCAR driver.

I don't get NASCAR at all.  In fact, I hate NASCAR.  If I wanted to watch cars drive around for six hours I'd go sit by the freeway.

But it's not just Southerners that love it, it's popular as hell up here too.  I just don't get it.

I just don't get it.

It's racing for people with ADD.

How?  They go around in a circle for HOURS.  Straight, then turn left.  Straight, then turn left.  Rinse and repeat.  How would someone with ADD find that attractive?

TOTALLY BORING!!  Oh, hey Fritos!

"Hey, what's going on? Oh, left turn! Let's see if anybody spins out."

The same way Rednecks find anything interesting.  Add more al-coh-mah-hol.

After a few, the only thing they can understand is the simple stuff.

And, of course, there are the car crashes.
Title: Re: Hockey Playoffs

I'm not sitting through six hours of brain grinding boredom just for the off chance that the cars will crash.  Most crashes suck anyway.

Agreed.  Nascar is dull.  The formula 1 racing I see over in Europe (where they race through twists and turns in the streets) is a lot more interesting.  But then, go kart racing is like that and is more interesting.

There's a link between NASCAR and alcohol aside from obvious consumption:

Early NASCAR drivers were also bootleggers. They would modify their cars mechanicals without touching the exteriors as much as they could. Cars that would look stock (NASCAR being short for the National Association of Stock CAr Racing) would have the ability to pour on the speed if a cop decided to take a closer look at the car. After Prohibition ended some of the cars ended up on the dirt tracks that are scattered across the South, the various organizers would get races put together, and it grew to what it is today.

Not just in the South.  Canada was also a big home to that.  A few 'Shiners up here even had recipes to fuel their cars that ran better than the gasoline that was available at the time according to legend.

It's also where a lot of motorcycle culture came from, as a bike with a sidecar full of bootleg booze could outrun any car at the time.  Which is also where motorcycle cops came from as well, as they would have motorcycles that weren't weighed down by a sidecar or booze.  :P

Well, back to hockey- anyone else watch tonight's Hawks/Nucks game and think 'uh oh...'? That sure looked like the Canucks team that rolled over so meekly to the Hawks the past couple of years. The late-game nastiness was interesting as well- looking forward to see how much of that- and Luongo's bad night- carries over to Thursday!

While I think it would be great to think of the 'Hawks as being able to pull a Flyers I don't see it happening. Not unless Luongo's psyche is so fragile that he can have his will shattered in one period.
