Title: Calling All Browncoats!

Okay, so we're bogging/derailing a bunch of other threads with all our Firefly/Serenity references and quotes, I figured I'd put this topic in the Off-Off-Topic forum ;)

Caine, you just brought a tear to my eye. It's refreshing to find somebody who has the same opinion of Whedon.

Joker, the only work of Whedon that I find acceptable is when he's playing in somebody else's sandbox. Screenplay for Toy Story? Awesome. Buffy/Angel? Crap. I had to suffer through Buffy as tradeoff for watching wrestling back when I both dating a girl who loved Buffy and had any passing interest in the WWF. Whedon can't write a joke to save his life, they all go on about a sentence too long. Firefly, Dollhouse? The guy can't keep his sci-fi on the air for more than a season. Yes, I know Dollhouse was on the air for two seasons. They were each half a season long.

As to your challenge, I'll drop RDM's Battlestar Galactica and Deep Space Nine.

The cast was attractive I'll give them that. But it was a hodgepodge of ideas with a junior-level novel's plot. It wasn't awful, but I don't understand this level of fanaticism for it. It's like SciFi's Twilight, pretty people = best ever? That's handy to know as an artist. LoL

I don't think you watched the show very carefully, since the interaction between characters was by far the best part.

As promised...
Both good shows. Just not as good. Battlestar Galactica? Even the biggest fans have to recognize that show has some serious flaws. The ending is worse than the ending of Lost... That's just for starters.
Deep space nine is great, but it's lacking in the action department and it's quality from episode to episode varied significantly at times. It could also be somewhat boring at times.

I'm just curious about the pretty people part.

Every single person on TV or in the movies is pretty.  Even the ugly ones are only "Hollywood" ugly, I.E. just less pretty.  Those are usually striking in some way, or look cool, or both (Danny Trejo, Edward James Olmos, I'm lookin' at you two).

I'm not sure how it differentiates Firefly from any other show ever made.  Ah, well.

I liked the ending to BSG because it referenced the old series.  That gave my nostalgia gland a big kick.

I'm sorry, but I can't in any way wrap my mind around Gary Busey (sp?) being 'pretty' in any sense of the way. Those eyes are just so wrong.

Lol. That's not all thats wrong about that guy. Did you ever see I'm With Busey? That guy's a nutjob.

As for the end of Battlestar... We'll have to agree to disagree. I never watched the old show a whole lot. It's pretty unsophisticated. Bad dialogue, sexist, bad props, bad sets, bad hair. Lol. To me it was just hokey.

That's cuz it was the late 70's/early 80's, man! Everyone was like that back then. ;)
Title: Re: Calling All Browncoats!
Post by: Devil on <09-17-10/1535:51>
Yeah I'm not real nostalgic for old TV, since I was born in '85. I tend to judge things based on quality, regardless of when they were made.
Title: Re: Calling All Browncoats!
Post by: The_Gun_Nut on <09-17-10/1539:15>
Exactly.  That's the way it was on TV.  Actually, it was fairly liberal for the time, IMS.  There were female Viper pilots, eventually, which was progressive on TV aimed at male audiences.

The idea of it, that survivors a holocaust trek through the stars chasing a legend, was incredibly appealing.

And I doubt that you are immune to the whole nostalgia thing.  There are some extremely crappy shows from the '90s that just hit your button, I imagine.  We all have those things which tie us to our childhood and supposed "better days."

Would you by chance be under the age of 35 or so? For those of us who saw it first run, you have to remember we're seeing it through the eyes of being kids or teenagers. It was pretty progressive and high tech at the time.

Joker- No it's not wrong and I can completely understand why it doesn't appeal to you. It's from a different era. I think Flash Gordon is cheesy, but it came from 20 years before my time. People that were kids when it was live probably loved it.

And I admit, it's darn hard to watch many of the old BSG now. Some of those special effects are just painful. :)

After having watched the entire series within the last six months I have to disagree. Sure, the writing is still the weakest point of the show (closely followed by the amount of stock footage not made for the series), but the effects still look pretty good. They were movie quality for that day and IMO they still hold up.
Title: Re: Calling All Browncoats!
Post by: FastJack on <09-17-10/1730:54>
Ahh... the memories of BSG. Funny thing that. Follow some of my logic here:

Donald P. Bellisario started out as a writer for Glen A. Larson and wrote a number of the episodes of BSG. One episode, he did NOT write, however, was Experiment in Terra, where Apollo is recruited by beings from the Ship of Lights and 'transported' to the Planet Terra to make sure peace negotiations with the Eastern Alliance go smoothly. I say 'transported', because although it IS Apollo, the beings have altered reality so that everyone that sees him thinks he's this other guy that's part of the peace negotiations. He also has a guide from the beings of light to help him with his mission, but only he can see and hear him.

10 years later Mr. Bellisario would create, produce and write Quantum Leap.

Okay, back to talking about the awesomeness of Firefly and how Mal can kick Kirk's, Picard's AND Sheridan's asses with one ear ripped off.

Cut off, if I remember correctly. :) lol.
I don't know who'd he'd win in a fight against, but if it was a battle of coolness he would win hands down.

Edit: A thought just occurred to me. Maybe this was obvious to other people. Shadowrun could very very easily be converted to a Firefly setting. Seriously minimal work. All you'd have to do is ban some qualities, ban metahumans, maybe restrict some gear. And create some spaceship stats. Cyberware and Bioware might be a no no too. Could be really fun to roleplay in that universe.

Actually, I do use Firefly as a means of describing a low-end campaign (300-350 BP), since the players will most likely need to worry where their next meal is coming from.

I liked the first season of BSG but found things a bit hard to swallow after that. Cinimatography was still wonderful but to many mains were closet skinjobs!

DS9... to me it was meh! I like Worf and his character came into his own on the series ("I cannot defete him, I can only kill him"). Otherwise I just couldn't really get into the series.

Firefly however kick my ass with the last few seconds of the first episode. I was thinking, cowboys? In space? right! THen Mal kicked open the cryo box to "expose" River! looks down and just drops a, "Huhn?" fade to black. Masterful!

The interplay of the characters though sometimes campy was reminicent of my own friends & I hanging out. This was a show that should still be on TV IMO.

That was one of the cool things about the series:  the characters.  They seemed to be real people stuck in those extraordinary times just trying to make it, and not great and noble Starfleet Officers (tm).  They were far more approachable.

BTW, did anyone see the one Halloween episode of Castle where Nathan Fillion puts on his old Malcolm Reynolds costume?  I couldn't stop grinning the entire time I watched him in it.

Seen it. Laughed my ass off. Love it. <3

And I love Firefly to bits. Every part of it. River, Mal, and Kaylee are my favorites, but the whole damn crew just FIT together so well. I never have the patience to watch reruns, but I will sit and watch every single marathon SciFi does. And please don't compare it to Twilight. >_<!! None of you are adolescent/young adult girls. You cannot appreciate just how painfully HORRIBLE that scrap of writing is. If you're going to bash it bash it to like... Harry Potter or something. Just NOT Twilight.

And another "could be converted to shadowrun setting" that is also a crack addiction of mine is Repo! The Genetic Opera. Go see it. Seriously. TOTALLY AWESOME musical, this generation's Rocky Horror Picture show (though thankfully replacing all the damn sex with violence and comedic gore). LOVE IT.

Not to mention the writer for it, Terrance Zdunich, is one of the sweetest, most humble twisted and derranged psychopaths you will ever meet. :D You can't be right in the head and write that kinda shit.

Repo Men was a movie I liked more than I thought I would (in related news).  Solid fight scenes, four main actors that I tend to enjoy, and a halfway believable cyberpunk universe.  I dug it.

That's what made him famous, and really as best as a straight guy can judge he's still a handsome man. Really the casting of modern looking attractive people using current style trends is all I saw the show did differently. Which isn't a bad thing, I like when novels do it and even when it goes crazy like A Knight's Tale (in a bit of a reverse).

I watched THE REAL Battlestar growing up I watched 1 season of this supposed new season never watched it again (Hey at least I gave it 1 WHOLE season)

Firefly Eh ok I caught some here and there but it just didn't work for me.

I liked Buffy/Angel but whatever

Dollhouse was good (it had 2 seasons 14 eps and 13 eps STANDARD for todays tv shows) sadly as it neared the end it went off the tracks a bit but then I chalk that up to him trying to wrap it up far ahead of his planed time line.

As to fast jacks comment: "Okay, back to talking about the awesomeness of Firefly and how Mal can kick Kirk's, Picard's AND Sheridan's asses with one ear ripped off." Your right BUT.... thats cause Kirk was a lover Picard is a leader and Sheridan is dead NOW Mal vs. Riker you'd have fight.

As to my shows EH i'm a trekkie (to a point) I've seen the eps of all the series and I own every novel in print (So Far)

Someone said something about inside jokes watch Andromeda very first ep the line to Sorbo's character hunt is what are you some kinda greek god. (He played hercules)

Do I have more of course I watch ALOT of tv but I'm not gonna go in to them all here. I do remember one bad one though that although bad I watched every ep Automan.

I was a teen when the original came out Pete, I couldn't bring myself to watch the series. Oh I saw parts of some episodes as I was flipping channels or waiting for the show that came after it. To me it was Buck Rodgers (remember that 80s show) with a bigger budget. To me both were embarrassing to admit if I had watched it. This is from a man who watched Transformers & Thundercats as a US Marine.

So if someones trying to kill me, I have the right to kill 'em back. To paraphase Mal!

Battlestar was actually good for a couple of seasons and then RDM decided to suck my soul through a bendy straw. I would prefer to clean up 20 hairballs too watching 5 minutes of any episode of BSG's final season.

"On Battlestar Wiki, "RDM" is used primarily to mark articles related to the Re-imagined Series, particularly to distinguish between articles with similar names found in both Battlestar Galactica TV series.

    * "RDM" is used as a category reference where you can find all Re-imagined Series-related articles.
    * "RDM" is also an acronym for Re-imagined Series co-producer Ronald D. Moore."

Here's my +1 for Firefly and all things Whedon. Clever? Hell, yes!
I haven't seen any Dollhouse though so not a clue.

I haven't seen the Castle Hallowe'en episode; that's hilarious!
Dr Horrible Sing-Along Blog - nice.  :)

Manimal!  Wait.. nope, don't remember. Actually, thanks to your link, some of that did seem vaguely familiar.
A few years ago I heard rumours of 6M$ Man movie. That could still be cool.
I remember enjoying Automan but don't remember anything about Automan, except, "On a scale of 1 to 10, I'm an eleven.  8) "
I've only seen the first 2 seasons of the new BSG and quite liked it also. I'd like to see season 3. A tie? I bet if Firefly was allowed more than part of a season it would have held its own and not tanked after season two like some of you indicate BSG did.

Yay, Mosquito! Clever? Hell, yes!

Automan - what I remember there was his Tron-like creation of his car, and the mathematically-sharp corners he took, with the human creator-as-passenger kissing window every time the car changed directions.

...was it Michael York as Manimal, or a look-alike?  I mostly remember the stock footage of the transformations to hawk and panther.  Even as a young'un, I thought that was repetitive and lame and repetitive.  And there was something about Airwolf I really liked...

Dollhouse I missed completely.  Then again, I haven't even seen any - what was that one series with the short girl who also played the electric psycho in Heroes? - of that series, that Joss was all about.  If either of those are worth it, I may seek them out sometime.

But, yay!  Love for Firefly (and Mosquito) !  ;D

Automan - what I remember there was his Tron-like creation of his car, and the mathematically-sharp corners he took, with the human creator-as-passenger kissing window every time the car changed directions.
Don't forget his companion, AutoBit or somethin'... made all the stuff for Automan.
...was it Michael York as Manimal, or a look-alike?  I mostly remember the stock footage of the transformations to hawk and panther.  Even as a young'un, I thought that was repetitive and lame and repetitive.  And there was something about Airwolf I really liked...
He was a lookalike
Dollhouse I missed completely.  Then again, I haven't even seen any - what was that one series with the short girl who also played the electric psycho in Heroes? - of that series, that Joss was all about.  If either of those are worth it, I may seek them out sometime.
Kristen Bell
But, yay!  Love for Firefly (and Mosquito) !  ;D

I'm sorry, i enjoyed firefly and it ticked me off when they took it off the air, kinda like they did with Dresden Files and for much the same reason. The network that ran it just had bad luck and chose to put it in a time slot up against a much more popular show, not to mention wasnt there this thing called a writers strike that year.

Really? I think they'd be perfect together. Riddick would be charmed by her innocence, and intrigued by the ferocity in her. While River would find his clear-cut mindset refreshing in a 'verse where everyone's thoughts are convoluted... ;D

Dresden went off the air because it was pure crap. I got the DVDs as a gift, they are still the only thing I have ever re-gifted.

Here's an example of how bad the TV show was: at an appearance that Jim Butcher had in Chicago for one of his Dresden novels (Small Favor I think) somebody asked him about the show. He gave us the count of time (to the day) of when the rights reverted back to him. He was so disappointed with how the show was handled that I think he's automatically apologizing to anybody who watched it.

Wasn't that show British? I remember there being a very low quality show by that name I watched like two episodes then declared the rest of the series unwatchable (Though not as unwatchable as that Robin Hood show. Still pretty bad though). Seems like a crappy version of shows like Hellsing (Which owns pretty hard). It also reminded me of Hell Boy, Men in Black, and Warehouse 13. The concept wasn't terrible. It was just poorly executed and badly cast mostly. I'm yet to see any non-comedy English Television that I actually like though.

No, Dresden was a Sci-Fi network production. There was a British character, but for the most part it was Canadian/American.
Title: Re: Calling All Browncoats!
Post by: Devil on <09-27-10/1115:11>
Wow. Pretty low quality for a scifi (or syfy or whatever the fuck they want people to call them now) original series. The books look interesting though.

Alot of their movies suck too, now that I think of it. Cube 2, Riverworld, Earthsea, BSG: Razor. I liked BSG though. Good series. Warehouse 13 was pretty decent, but I lost interest because every episode had the same plot. Didn't they do Eureka? I like that show, despite cheesiness and some bad acting.

Edit: I was thinking of Torchwood possibly. Man that show was bad.
Title: Re: Calling All Browncoats!
Post by: Dead Monky on <09-27-10/1601:00>
Cube 2 wasn't a SyFy production.  But it was terrible enough to be one.

Post by: Casazil on <09-27-10/1601:51>
I read a comment by a syfy higher up in referance to the low quality movies they put out he was quoted as saying "they make cheap movies to entertain the masses" or something to that point not an exact quote as I don't have it in front of me.

More or less from the story I got that they make the cheesey low budget films cause people watch them and because they are cheap they can make alot of them.

As for Dresden eh I watched it all I think it wasn't that memorable it seems and I never watched torchwood.

Also, Torchwood is a Doctor Who spinoff produced by BBC. It's not a Sci-Fi production. (Yeah, right, you think ANY American producers would green light a main character that's bi-sexual?)

True story-

Back in the 80's when I was working at Pacific Rim Publishing (BattleTechnology and other game magazines). We were working on some project, which I can't recall at the moment. It was something not BattleTech and might have even been me just helping Hilary (The editor) get ready for an upcoming game (She was also a crack GM). This was on an old Mac Quadra Pro computer.

So I'm typing along and spell check threw back Microsoft as misspelled. We had a good chuckle on that, Mac vs PC and all. I kept on typed and had to type Cthulhu (info for an upcoming game).

Well we had a moment of weird as the Mac Quadra, which was pretty darn new and didn't have anything in the custom library returned that I had properly spelled the name of the great old one.

Wow, it's been quite a journey to get to this post, hasn't it?

Back to the topic :D

Firefly is awesome for lots of reasons.  The verbal sparring is great.  The characterization is awesome.  The set is super-solid.  The baddies are memorable.

But most of all, Mal.  He's written to do like everyone who watches Tee Vee and says, "just shoot the bastard!" wants him to do.

Guy takes a hostage and spits out "Okay, nobody move a-"*bang* dead.  He acts quickly and decisively, resorting to the most efficient solution, because he doesn't have the leeway to mess around and hope things work out for the best.  None of that "enemies are just friends who happen to want to murder us," crap that permeates the "best future" scifi found in most space-faring shows.

That said, Firefly wasn't really sci-fi.  It was a western set in space.  Sort of how Bablyon 5 was political and ethical exposition within the backdrop of space aliens.

For my money, no show has really dealt with pure sci-fi concepts like Farscape.  Things like, the main character gets replicated, one of the two of them runs off and falls in love with another character, then dies - now that character has this weird "okay, so I fell in love with your dead duplicate, how the hell do I deal with you?" relationship.  That's the kind of hypothetical issue that can only be dealt with in science fiction.   ...not to mention that, at one point, the main character straps a thermonuclear bomb to his chest and proceeds to wreak havoc throughout an enemy space station.  Good times...

Yeah Like Mal kicking a bad guy into teh turbine of Firefly then looking at the next one and asks,"SO you wanna give your boss teh messege?" line.

"Wind blows North I go North" Plain simple direct. What I like most about the character is his loyalty to his friends. Even when he doesn't like 'em (Simon)

And yes. The bad guys were win. I freaking LOVED the Operative from Serenity. He's so perfectly Lawful Evil it's beautiful. I just want to take the DVD after making my old D&D group that tried (and failed. So hard) at being an evil party and BEAT THEM WITH IT.

Havin' brains is a bit overrated at times. It's just as falable as the other two thinking organs we have. The Heart never sees the desert for the dirt, and well the lower brain is usually going off half cocked!

Yeah, thinking too much or not enough can both screw you over. I alternate between the two kinda like newtons cradle. Can never find that balance.

I gave my copy of firefly to a friend, I think. I have the series freakin' memorized, so it's cool. Besides, and exgirlfriend got it for me, so it had negative feelings associated with it.

I'm still a browncoat, but i've moved on. They aren't bringing the show back and there's probably not going to be a MMO. I'm pretty sure firefly is dead. I bet at some point they'll try to make some kind of sequel series or film, using completely different actors. It wont be as good though.

PWNED

Much of l33tspeak (whoa... Spell-checker's not trying to correct that...) came from gamers using typed-messaging during games. Unfortunately, they weren't all that great at typing, and many mistyped "owned" "the" and such so that they became "pwned" and "teh"

Capt. Malcolm Reynolds: I don't murder children.
The Operative: I do. If I have to.
Capt. Malcolm Reynolds: Why? Do you even know why they sent you?
The Operative: It's not my place to ask.  I believe in something greater than myself.  A better world.  A world without sin.
Capt. Malcolm Reynolds: So me and mine gotta lay down and die... so you can live in your better world?
The Operative: I'm not going to live there. There's no place for me there... any more than there is for you. Malcolm... I am a monster.  What I do is evil.  I have no illusions about it, but it must be done.

Joss Whedon can write a character who is both sympathetic and, well, a childkiller.
That's why he is a damn good writer, and that's why Firefly isn't just another TeeVee show.

The one mechanic I do like and have imported to other systems (except Shadowrun) is the 5x5x5. It's basically asking the player to name (maximum) 5 friends, 5 acquaintances and 5 enemies. The enemies don't have to be "hunt-you-to-the-ends-of-the-earth" types, just people that you share a mutual dislike for. Also, you don't have to have the 5 of each, but they do recommend to try and think of at least 1 or 2 of each.

I do cringe a little when hearing westerners cursing in Chinese, but that's mostly because I happen to BE Chinese and some of the pronunciations are awful.

But I can rarely hold a grudge about it, as it's usually Browncoats and they are okay in my book.

[/quote]

I believe it was Simon Macorkindale (? sp) in Manimal . . . it's been 20+ years, so cut me some slack . . .

I haven't seen a Joss Whedon creation I less than liked yet - the man is a storyteller.

Now if George Lucas would let him, or Chris Claremont, play in the Star Wars sandbox, THAT would be awesome . . .
Title: Re: Calling All Browncoats!

Alas, RIP Simon MacCorkindale (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_MacCorkindale). Just passed away on the 14th.

Listen, I'm a huge Whedon fan, but I have my worries about the Avengers movie. Remember, just because someone is really good at some stuff doesn't mean they are good at everything. In the case of Chris Claremont, take a look at the Willow sequel trilogy he co-wrote with Lucas. Within the first few pages of the first novel, they killed off Mad Martigan, Sorsha, Willow's entire village and twelve other areas in the world (Synopsis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadow_Moon_%28book%29)).

It's one of the reasons I stopped buying comic books years ago. Yes, they are getting terrific writers to come in and write the books. But the first think most of the writers do when they come into a new book is to toss out everything the previous writer done. And it's not always for the better.

Whedon's specialty is ensemble cast shows and movies.  The Avengers movie will be about an ensemble of super heroes.

I think its got a pretty good shot at being really good.

The worry is that Whedon is a great dialogue writer/director that features strong females in key roles and the action is just "something that happens a lot" to the characters. I'm just not sure if that jives with the Avengers as we known it and hope it becomes.

A round of applaus for knowing Chris Claremont! I will agree with Gun Nut, Whedon may or may not know Comic heros but he write a mean team. I didn't watch his other shows but allot of the positive I read about him is about how he right character interaction. I don't think he'll do bad with the Avengers, I have been known to be wrong so I will wait and see.

Thanks Karma. Yeah, I realize Mal & Angel aren't ladies (although Angel's whining at times... I kid! I kid!), but they both had a lot of strong women near them. And that's what kinda worries me about The Avengers. They've gone on record that the only female member of the team will be Black Widow (no Wanda or Wasp, or at least not as a main character), so it's definitely a boy's club right now.

Hmm.  I am now sad about Simon MacCorkindale.  Thanks for the heads-up, FJ.

Re: Whedon/Avengers, though, I am a little concerned.  I mean, I did enjoy the Astonishing X-Men for the two years he wrote for 'em.  Character-developmentwise, it was the Kitty Show, with everyone else around being snarky and tense with each other and well-portrayed, if somewhat conservatively regarding their personalities.  Still thought it was good.

I worry that he's gonna write his own story in the Avengers universe, and find a way to kill off the nicest person in the movie in an unapologetic, and nasty fashion.  "S*$# Happens, Especially To Nice People" seems to be the motto he writes by, in my view.

I worry that he's going to come up with a 'new' important character for the movieverse, when I would prefer a retell and reframe of solidly extant history...you know, in comic-fantasy-land, but still.  I'd like a 'take' on it, without an extra limb grafted on just because somebody likes the way chicken legs look.

If I base it purely on what I've seen of the X-Men stuff, I will give my opinion that a similar treatment would be acceptable.  Especially if there's a little bit of first-run Ultimates hardcase-Cap in there.  Just a bit.
Title: Re: Calling All Browncoats!
Post by: Longshot23 on <10-27-10/0619:22>
Actually the X-Men movie character line-up was something I found disappointing.  I know Wolvie is a BIG selling point, but I really would have preferred the original team: Cyclops, Iceman, Marvel Girl, Beast and Angel.

same with the Avengers.  I think I'd prefer seeing Wasp in the team over Black Widow, with Iron Man, Thor, Giant-Man and the Hulk, a la the comic debut. Captain America should be a separate movie - i think the WWII connection should be kept too.

but the studio/director will cast whoever they think will help make the movie successful . . .

ST:NG is pretty good, but suffers a bit more from the wear and tear of time than does TOS.  Had Firefly enough time to run it's course (Whedon projected a seven year span) then I imagine it would eclipse all other s.f. (if not all other TV series).

As much as I love Firefly, lounging around wife in my arms is WAAAAAAAY better to me!

And that, my fellow chummers, is why there shouldn't be couples at the gaming table ;D

Oh she's not a gamer... I wish she was sometimes. I have had a gamer girlfriend and I enjoyed the shared intrest.

But I think a long weekend snuggling the one you love beats watching TV alone everytime FTW

XD But I can have a long "weekend" (mine are in the middle of the week) snuggling with mine while murdering the crap out of people. And the only time my TV is even ON is when he's over! :D

I will be trying out the Dresden Files RPG with my girlfriend in a few weeks. Evaluate if she has fun with P&P RPGs. If yes... I may create a monster...

I'm sure it's already been mentioned on here, but Nathon Fillian has a site about trying to buy the rights to Firefly. Unlikely to happen, but at least someone is keeping the dream alive.

I have a brown duster, a black leather cowboy hat, tight pants, and a repro of Mal's Pistol.

All I need is a gunbelt and holster, and I'm set.

By the way, have you gone and wished our dear Captain Mal a happy 40th birthday yet?

Just need a flannel shirt and you're set. Gunbelt's easy, though the ole fashioned leather ones can be a bit tricky.

Harder to get in Canada.  The gun belt, not the flannel shirt.

I suppose you can find flannels galore up there.
